BRANDON, FL - James Samuel "Coach" Pavy, 82, formerly of Marianna, died Friday, July 22, 2005. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday, Aug. 6, at First United Methodist Church in Marianna, with remembrance time following for sharing favorite stories. At Coach's request, attendees are encouraged to dress comfortably in a sport or golf shirt. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to LifePath Hospice, 3010 W. As a married World War II veteran at newly coed Florida State University in 1946, Coach was point guard on the first FSU men's basketball team and scored the team's first points for three consecutive years. After graduating in 1950 with his bachelor's and master's degrees, he coached and taught in Malone and Chattahoochee, before settling in at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, where he retired in 1988 after 32 years.

In the four years he coached at Malone High School, he turned out three Class B state championship teams. At Chattahoochee, he coached football and basketball for two years, winning the Florida Class B basketball state championship in 1956.

At Chipola, Coach Pavy took the Indians to the National Junior College Tournament in 1959 and 1960. In 1959, the Indians placed ninth in the nation.

An excellent golfer and avid supporter of Seminole athletics, Coach enjoyed people and was well-known and respected by former players and students throughout the state.

The youngest of six children, he is survived by a brother, Dr. Russell Pavy of Seal Beach, Calif., and a sister, Mary Steele of Manila, Ind. Other survivors include two daughters, Karen Rooks and Sandra Howsare, both of Tampa; two granddaughters, Dr. Beth Rooks May of Quincy and Amy Rooks of Southern Pines, N.C.; and a grandson, Brian Patrick Howsare of Brandon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jessie Liles Pavy.
