Former Florida State basketball player Vince Martello died Tuesday, following a nearly seven-month battle with cancer. Martello, 23, died at Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. Preparations are being made for a Thursday funeral service at Our Lady of Victory Church in Crestview. Martello is survived by his wife, Teresa, and a daughter, Katrina, 4; his parents, two brothers and a sister. Martello's condition was first diagnosed on Aug. 30, 1985 by his family doctor in Baker, after Martello complained of bladder problems and a persistent pain in his left leg. Martello later was taken to Shands Teaching Hospital in Gainesville, where doctors discovered that cancer cells had spread to his bladder and prostate gland and had affected a nerve in his leg. Despite treatment, the cancer continued to spread, and Martello had been in serious condition for the past several weeks. Martello, a 6-foot-6 forward, began his college basketball career at Auburn, where he played in 25 games as a freshman, averaging 4.9 points and 2.1 rebounds. Martello left Auburn after one year, playing one season at Gulf Coast Community College, averaging 25 points per game. He then transferred to FSU for his final two seasons, from 1982-84.
