From the Tallahassee Democrat, October 8, 1984, page 22. Former FSU player kills self. LANTANA, Fla. - Former Florida State basketball player and Clemson assistant coach James R. Smith ignored the pleas of a friend and jumped to his death from a highway overpass, Lantana police said Sunday. He was 29. Smith and an unidentified female friend stopped on an overpass on I-95 Friday afternoon, according to a police department employee who asked not to be identified. Smith got out of the car and, despite his friends' efforts to talk him out of it, jumped off the bridge, Detective Bill Carson said earlier. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach at 4:50 p.m. Friday, the employee said. Smith played for the Seminoles in the late 1970s and went on to serve as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans, South Alabama and Clemson. He worked under Coach Cliff Ellis at South Alabama and moved to Clemson when Ellis took over that program last spring. Clemson officials later announced that Smith had left the school for personal reasons. A graduate of Lake Worth High, Smith moved back to Lantana recently and had been living with his father, Robert G. Smith, Carson said. He is survived by his father; his mother, Faith Nyquist of England; and a brother, John D. Smith.
