From Dick Sutherland's son: Dick was drafted during the Korean War and had
to leave FSU. When he returned from the war he finished school at South
Florida. Richard Earl Lee Sutherland, 85, passed away peacefullyon Tuesday, July 12th 2016. Richard was a loyal husband, a caring father, and a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. His passing will be sorely grieved by his many loving family members, yet we rejoice at his arrival in a better place. Born in Plant City, Florida on September 3rd 1930, Richard moved to Leesburg in 1968, and to Bushnell in 1997. Richard grew up on a strawberry farm before playing football at Florida State University and joining the Marines during the Korean War. He later made his career working for Seaboard Coastline Railroad. Following his retirement from the railroad, Richard devoted his life to causes important to him. He spent countless hours building houses for Habitat for Humanity, also serving as a volunteer coordinator. He served as an Episcopal deacon for more than 20 years. Richard continuously volunteered and ministered in the Florida Department of Corrections for over 30 years. He impacted hundreds of men with his counsel and loving support. In addition, he and others maintained a clothing drive for those released. His passion throughout life revolved around caring for others, particularly those most in need. He had a soft spot in his heart for all people, and all animals, no matter their creed or color. Richard was preceded in death by his wife Ann Edgemon Sutherland, who passed away in 2001. Survivers include his children Cheri English, Lee Sutherland (Nancy), Mark Sutherland and Jean-Anne Sutherland; grandchildren Michelle English Frazer (Bob), Eric English (Jenn), Brandon English (Jennifer), Kelly Peters (Matt), Holly Smith (Ethan), Jeremy Sutherland, Ryan Sutherland, and Savannah Sutherland Bindas; great grandchildren Dawson, Garrison, Jackson, J.R., Ashlee, Nolan, Gracyn, Annaleigh and Addison; brothers Levi, Mitchell and Carl. Richard will be remembered for his loving compassion for those in society who are in need or oppressed - a compassion he pursed with relentless work ethic. He set an example that for those who knew him shall never forget.
