Former Nole DB McCrary passes away from ALS.

Former Florida State defensive back Brian McCrary, whose 12 career interceptions rank tied for sixth all-time, died from ALS Friday morning.

He was 56.

McCrary, an overachieving defensive back from Tennessee and a former Golden Gloves boxer nicknamed "Boom-Boom," was diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, eight years ago.

Friends and former Seminole teammates said McCrary, married with children and a successful pharmaceutical sales representative in Orlando, fought the disease with strength and courage.

McCrary and his family attended FSU's home game against Miami last season.

"It was an awesome time and just to see that smile from him - and the smile in his eyes - was great," said Kelly Lowrey, a former FSU quarterback (1979-83) and a roommate of McCrary's at FSU.

"He was one of the toughest SOBs you would ever meet in your life. He wasn't that big but he would turn you on your haircut. It's just so sad. He was such a great guy. He fought the good fight."

McCrary, a 5-foot-11, 170-pounder, recorded 260 tackles over his career (1981-84).

In a 2014 interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, McCrary said he felt "blessed" despite his struggles.

He was determined to make new memories with family and friends and to fight another day.

Led by Athletes Care Association, Inc. - directed by former FSU and NFL linebacker Jesse Solomon - a $50,000 scholarship in McCrary's honor has been formed.

McCrary's symptoms first showed in 2008 when his right foot dropped. He was diagnosed two years later with ALS.
