kills self. By John S. Cole, Democrat staff writer. A former Florida State University football player died early Saturday from what Tallahassee police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Troy Sanders, a reserve defensive lineman from 1989 to 1992, was found slumped over the steering wheel of his truck on the shoulder of High Road near Myrick Road at 1:30 a.m., police said. Sanders had just left AJ Sports bar on West Tennessee Street, according to police reports. Police said Sanders appeared to have shot himself in the chest. Friends told police that Sanders had been despondent for a while, in the wake of a recently broken relationship. Tough transition from football field to workplace. But Steve Gilmer, a former roommate of Sanders who now works as a sales representative for Pace Marketing, said he believes Sanders' problems were more complex and went far deeper. Exactly how complex and deep will probably remain a mystery, Gilmer said. Sanders was a quiet person and not the type to talk about his problems, Gilmer said, and it was difficult to tell when something was bothering him. "You probably couldn't tell anything was wrong unless you were really close to him," Gilmer said. Gilmer speculated that Sanders, who had worked as a mail carrier since graduating in 1992, was having a difficult time making the transition from the charged activity of college football to the daily drudgery of the work world. Losing many of his college "family" may have made the process harder, Gilmer said. "We all lived together. We were best friends," he said. "Now, we're all spread out so we don't see each other as much." Without the support structure, Gilmer said, Sanders may have felt he had to face his demons alone. 'I wish he would have said something to me.' But Sanders, who was well-liked by his teammates, still had people who cared about him, such as Todd Rebol, another former teammate who still lives in Tallahassee selling trucks for Champion Chevrolet. "I knew he's been down and everything," Rebol said. "I guess he was keeping more than everybody thought inside. "I wish he would have said something to me because I really would have liked to help." Rebol said he always considered Sanders his big brother, and not just because of Sanders' 6-foot 2-inch, 262-pound stature. "He helped me get through my freshman year, showing me some of the ins and outs of football," Rebol said. Sanders was a highly touted lineman out of Elba High School in Elba, Ala., where he was an all-state player as a senior. He also was a solid student who carried a 3.0 grade-point average in high school. As with most football players entering FSU, Sanders did not play his first year. He played only sparingly in four games as a reserve in 1989, then earned significant playing time as a backup defensive lineman in 1990 as a sophomore. As a junior in 1991, Sanders backed up Carl Simpson at defensive end. Perhaps the best game of his career came against Middle Tennessee State that season when Sanders made six tackles, including two sacks, and caused a fumble. Prior to his senior season, Sanders was moved to the offensive line, but returned to the defense as a backup to Toddrick McIntosh. Sanders was considered one of FSU's strongest players, particularly in his upper-body strength. But his lack od speed prevented Sanders from being a star. Sanders was a four-year letterman and played in FSU's wins against Nebraska in the 1990 Fiesta Bowl, Penn State in the 1990 Blockbuster Bowl, Texas A&M in the 1992 Cotton Bowl and Nebraska in the 1993 Orange Bowl. "He was a real tough, hard-nosed young man, said Assistant Head Coach Chuck Amato. "He made a really good contribution to our football team. I just can't believe that this happened." Gilmer said a memorial service is planned, but a date will not be set until Sanders' family is consulted. His relatives are to come to Tallahassee from Albany, Ala., by Monday. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
