Seminole freshman electrocuted in Texas hometown.
Michael Hendricks, 18, returned to Texas for the weekend and touched a live high wire on Friday night that killed him.

CLEMSON, S.C. - Florida State football players woke up Saturday morning to the sobering news that a teammate had died overnight.

Michael Hendricks, a freshman tight end from Baytown, Texas, was electrocuted on Friday night after driving home from Tallahassee on Thursday night. He was 18.

Jimmy Heggins, the FSU assistant coach who recruited Hendricks, said a family member told him that Hendricks had touched a high wire after climbing a 100-foot Houston Power and Light tower for a view of the city lights of nearby Houston.

The wire carried 130,000 volts, according to the Harris County Sherriff's Department, which got the call at 10:49 p.m. (CDT).

"I was told the family learned that it was something he had done with his boyhood friends since the 9th grade," said Heggins.

Bowden informs players

FSU coach Bobby Bowden told his players of the accident during breakfast on Saturday at their Greenville, S/C/ hotel. The coach got the news just minutes before, upon his return from addressing a Fellowship of Christian Athletes breakfast in Greenville.

"It was just sad, very sad," said Bowden, "something all of us just hate so."

Hendricks was a roommate of freshman center Andy Crowe of Florida High.

"Our players were all shocked," Bowden said. "They were not ready for something like that."

Hendricks had not practiced after dislocating a knee the first day FSU practiced in pads in mid-August. Had he stayed healthy, he might have played Saturday. There was speculation he would have become the team's No. 2 tight end at this point.

A top tight end prospect.

Twice all-state in Texas, the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder had been rated by one recruiting service among the nation's top five prospects at tight end.

"He was a fine young man with a lot of potential," said Bowden.

FSU became interesting in recruiting Hendricks after he attended Bowden's football camp in 1991. Bowden had once tried to recruit Hendricks' stepfather out of Birmingham, Ala.

Heggins said he had tried to discourage the player from driving home after the player approached him about it on Wednesday. When he was contacted, Bowden said he was later asked about the trip, "And I said, 'Well, yes, if he would be careful.' "

It was understood that Hendricks would have returned today for a study hall. He had been making progress with rehabilitation of the knee. Following the injury, FSU planned to redshirt him.

"My understanding is that a buddy came by his home on Friday night, wanting to go out," said Heggins, "and that Michael did not really want to go."

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Earthman Funeral Home in Baytown, Texas. Bowden and Heggins are making plans to attend.
