Former Congressman, FSU QB was UT icon's brother.

NASHVILLE, TN (AP) - Joe Majors, a former professional football player and state lawmaker who was the brother of legendary University of Tennessee coach and player Johnny Majors, died Thursday. He was 70.

Joe Majors, an attorney, had been ill with cancer and heart problems for a few years. He died at his home, having celebrated his 70th birthday on Christmas day, said Bill Williams, a friend and associate who was speaking for the family.

Majors, a Democrat, served in the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1969 to 1971, representing Coffee, Franklin and Grundy counties.

More recently, he lobbied for the Tennessee Consumer Finance Association, the Tennessee Hotel and Lodging Association, the Tennessee Oil Marketers Association and the Tennessee Pawnbrokers Association.

Majors was born and grew up in Lynchburg. He earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University and established his legal practice in Tullahoma in 1965. He was Tullahoma city attorney from 1965 to 1968.

He was a starting quarterback at Florida State University and also played at the University of Alabama. He was a defensive back for the inaugural 1960 season of the Houston Oilers in the American Football League, which later merged with the NFL.

His late father, Shirley, was head football coach at the University of the South in Sewanee. His late brother Bill was a tailback at Tennessee from 1958-60 and brother Bobby was a Volunteer defensive back from 1969-71. Johnny was a tailback from 1954-56 and head coach from 1977-92.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, four stepchildren, three brothers, one sister and four grandchildren. A memorial service was planned for Sunday afternoon at Wightman Chapel at Nashville's Scarritt-Bennett Center.
