Former defensive end Tony Romeo is best known for a sophomore season in 1958 that produced honorable mention All-American honors from the Associated Press and United Press International. Romeo keyed a
strong FSU defensive effort that led to an appearance in the Bluegrass Bowl. He was named Florida Defensive Linemen of the Week three times. Although he was often injured in his junior and senior
seasons, Romeo played both ways for the Garnet and Gold, making the Florida All-State team as a senior. After being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and traded to the Boston Patriots, Romeo played seven years for the Pats. He still holds the tight end record for catches in a game (10 for 149 yards) and was Florida's Pro Athlete of the Year in 1966. Romeo was also known for beginning the
first chapel services in professional football. Following his pro career, he spent time in the ministry before putting his FSU business degree to work. Tony Romeo, captain of the 1960 Florida State football team who went on to play tight end for the old Boston Patriots, died Thursday in Charlotte, N.C., of melanoma, former teammate Jim Kearce said. He was 58. Romeo played tight end and defensive end for FSU from 1958 through 1960, and was inducted into the FSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. "Tony Romeo was the first bona fide blue-chip player that we ever had at Florida State," said Kearce, who lives in Blounstown. "Tony was very historic to
Florida State in so many ways. He basically was instrumental along with four or five other guys in establishing the Fellowship of Christian Athletes." Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 1996, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with Dr. Joe Brown officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Honeycutt Family Cemetery in Burnsville, NC. The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Reverend Romeo, a native of St. Petersburg, FL, was the son of the late Anthony and Martha Wiggins Romeo. He was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and served as the Director of Employee Assistance for United Family Services. He was a graduate of Florida State University and received a masters of divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. At Florida State, Rev. Romeo was an All-American football player and a member of the Florida State University Hall of Fame. He went on to play for the NFL New England Patriots for eight years. By the time he was a ninth-grade student in Tampa, Fla., he had traveled pretty far on the road to alcoholism. He was a gang leader and a pretty mean street fighter. Then he discovered football. The Rev. Anthony Lamar "Tony" Romeo, 58, died Thursday at home. He was good at being mean, and football was his game. "I found out you could knock people down and they wouldn't put you in jail for it. I enjoyed that." He told Florida State Magazine in 1992. He was going to Florida State University on a football scholarship and (the) Burt Reynolds was his teammate. Alcohol and personal problems were his post-game companions. His studies suffered and he lost his scholarship. Some Florida businessmen helped him financially and he attended church with a couple of them. Then he discovered God. He stopped drinking and began working with church youth groups and counseling, an activity he continued. He was a 1959 All-American and went on to play one season for the Dallas Texans before eight seasons with the Boston (now New England) Patriots. He counseled his fellow players and began team Bible studies. He had already discovered Sabra. They met at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in Black Mountain, a summer camp for college students. They went to Florida State University together. She was runner-up for the 1960 Miss Charlotte beauty contest. They spent their honeymoon in New Orleans and left there for a revival in Texas. He spoke, gave testimony; she sang. "He was a gifted speaker," Sabra said. He spent his football off-seasons earning a master of divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. "While I was playing football, I knew what I wanted to do," he said in the magazine article. He later went to Western Kentucky University, where he was campus minister and counselor. He stayed there eight years and started marketing synthetic oil and oil compounds. His business was a stellar success; he said he gave away more money than he once made. Then the oil business bottomed out and he lost his three homes and expensive cars. "I got ornery and mean and mad at God," he said. Then he lost Sabra and his daughters, Sabrena and Tamera. And his self-respect. He wound up living in a dinky travel trailer on an abandoned chicken farm. Suicidal thoughts dogged him. But the girls kept arranging meetings at their birthdays and other times families usually spend together. Tony realized the divorce had been his fault. Sabra watched a dramatic change in Tony."He really had changed," she said. "The most important thing was to get our family together. They worked their way through the forgiveness process. "A light would turn on, restoring our first love and joy," she said. "We put our life back together. "He was all man and he loved God and his family." |
