In the late fifties, Bucky Hiles came from Atlanta, Georgia, to star for legendary Coach Bim Stults' Seminole swimming team. In 1959, he was an All-American in the 440 freestyle, and in 1961 he again gained All-American recognition, this time in the 100-yard butterfly. Hiles was the first Seminole swimmer to earn All-American status in two different strokes. At one time, he held school records in seven different events. He was chosen the university's Athlete of the Year in 1961. One of the most versatile swimmers in Seminole history, Bucky Hiles' performances earned national recognition for Florida State University.

Following his FSU career Buck was the Assistant Swimming Coach at The U.S> Military Academy at West Point and a member of the Militay Olympic teams of 1962 (Paris) and 1963 (Barcelona). His teams won the Medley Relay in Paris and the 800-Meter Freestyle Relay in Barcelona.
