North Carolina Wins Team Title At Seminole Intercollegiate Men's Golf Tournament Florida State's Mitchell finishes ninth individually. March 12, 2002 TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of North Carolina recovered from three strokes down entering the third round and won going away by five strokes over the University of Alabama Birmingham as the Seminole Intercollegiate men's golf tournament came to a close this afternoon at Golden Eagle Country Club. The Tar Heels begin the final round three strokes behind Duke and posted their best single round score of the tournament, a 292, the claim the team championship. Senior Graeme McDowell of UAB shot a 10-under par score of 206 to win the individual championship. North Carolina won the team championship as it placed two players in the top-10 of the individual standings. Bob Cherry finished in a tie for second place with a three-under score of 213. He carded a four-under par 68 in round one. In addition, Dustin Bray finished in a tie for seventh place with a one-under par score of 215. McDowell played brilliantly throughout the event to earn medallist honors. He finished the event with a nine-under par 206. McDowell shot 68-69-69 to win the event. Virginia's Steve Marino, who won the individual championship last season, finished in a tie for seventh. Marino led the Cavaliers to a seventh place finish in the team standings. Junior Peter Mitchell led Florida State as he finished in a career-best ninth place in the individual standings. He was strong in the second and third rounds with scores of 70 and 71 and finished with an even-par score of 216. Freshman Eric Beaty led a trio of Seminoles who finished with identical scores of 232. Beaty shot a tournament-best 72 in the second round. He finished tied with senior Rick Westbrook and sophomore Alan Beers. Junior Brad Lusenhop also played well for the Seminoles. Florida State continues its season as it travels to the Cleveland Golf Collegiate in Aiken, S.C., next week. The event begins with 36 holes March 18 and ends with 18 holes March 19.
