1970 Florida State Signees/Newcomers

From the 1969-70 FSU Basketball Handbook, page 20.

Vernell Ellzy, 6-4, 213, F, Sanford (Crooms Academy/Seminole CC) - Considered one of the top junior college prospects in the nation...lead Seminole JC to state title last season...Florida State became interested in him after watching him in state JC tourney during freshman year...then last season...Florida State coaches were convinced after watching him score 28 points against Seminole freshman and outrebound frosh ace Rowland Garrett...physically strong at 6-4, 213 pounds...has deceptive quickness and has been clocked at 10.2 in 100...averaged around 60% of his shots during JC career...has surprised Coach Durham with his outside shooting ability...defensively, he's ahead of most transfers because his JC coach, Joe Sterling, stressed defense...physical ability fits perfectly in Florida State's pressing defense and fast break style of attack...could win starting job at either wing or low post...has adjusted to Florida State well both on and off the court.

Rowland Garrett, 6-6, 195, F, Canton, MS (Rogers) - One of the brightest sophomore prospects in the country...tabbed by pre-season basketball magazines as all-star candidate...Seminole Coach Hugh Durham agrees on both counts...was high school All-American in Canton, Ms...has raw physical ability to take up where he left off as freshman when he broke frosh scoring average record with 25.7 ppg...physical ability unlimited...just a matter of how much time and hard work he wants to put into game...at 6-6, 195 pounds, he has quickness to play all over the floor...great leaping ability...averaged 20.2 rebounds as freshman...has hit his head on basket rim more than once while rebounding...averaged seven blocked shots per game as freshman...from head of key is definite scoring threat...has all the moves and isn't afraid to put the ball on the floor.

Roy Glover, 6-0, 171, G, Pompano Beach (Blanch Ely) - All-state high school performer...was personally disapointed with freshman season because of injuries...still frosh's third leading scorer...directed attack from point position...shoots well from outside and has necessary speed for guard...says Coach Hugh Durham: "I expect Glover to be one of the top defensive players on the squad. He's willing to take the challenge and will see plenty of action this season."

Jim Gosink, 6-10, 210, C, Reading, OH (Moeller)

Ron Harris, 6-4, 191, F, Key West (Key West) - Was prep All-American at Key West where he led team to state high school championship...prep coach was Dave Fedor, one of Florida State's all-time cage greats...as pre-med major, he carries a 3.0 average and is on dean's list...outstanding defensive performer...this may make him starter as sophomore...also hit 51 percent of field goal attempts as freshman for 14.9 average...said Jeff Hogan, three-year Florida State star now graduated, "Harris was best defensive player I faced last year."...improved shooting at end of year...scored 27 points in final frosh contest...most of buckets came from 20-24 feet out...if he can pick up where he left off offensively, be tough to keep him out of starting lineup...fine passer who is very unselfish...led high school team in assists.

Florida State University's basketball program may be on the verge of another probation from the National Collegiate Athletic Association after complaints from a Southeastern Conference school.

Coach Hugh Durham was himself placed on probation by FSU President Stanley Marshall Thursday.

"I have acted to eliminate from Coach Durham's responsiblity all recruiting activities and to restrict him to on-the-court coaching activities," Dr. Marshall said in a statement.

Marshall will appear before the 18-member NCAA Council this weekend to respond to charges concerning FSU's recruiting practices last year.

Marshall also alluded to further punishment if the NCAA rules against Florida State. In his statement, the president said, "The University will make a further review following the final (NCAA) Council action to determine if additional disciplanary action may be indicated."

The SEC school complained to the NCAA after a highly-regarded player in its state - not Florida - could not meet the NCAA 1.6 rule nor the school's admission requirements, regarded as among the lowest in the conference. The player later enrolled at Florida State and was accepted on scholarship. (Editors note: this was not the reason FSU was put on further probation.)

Dr. Marshall's action Thursday is regarded as an attempt to show the NCAA the school's good faith. However, if the charges are valid it is a certainty that the school will be in trouble, as FSU was placed on probation in 1968 for recruiting violations, allegedly for excesses in entertaining prospective players.

Marshall's statement added, "The facts developed in the University inquiry into the allegations leave no doubt that the action we have taken is justified. Coach Durham acknowledges an error in judgement on his part and understands the reasons for disciplinary action by the University.

"We share the NCAA objective of maintaining the highest standards in the conduct of intercollegiate athletic programs."

The NCAA requires a projected grade-point average of 1.6 on a four-point scale for a scholarship. Florida State is an independent school, but generally accepts Southeastern Conference Standards.

One source said the 32-year-old Durham was not entirely to blame. "It's other people in the basketball program who have gotten the school in trouble," said the source. "Of course, Hugh is the boss, and he must take the blame."

Durham could not be reached for comment. However, in a statement, he said, "President Marshall has acted in the best interests of the University and the basketball program. I'm grateful for his continued confidence in my coaching ability and usefulness to Florida State."

If FSU is penalized by the NCAA, it would certainly include a ban on post-season tournament participation. The Seminoles are currently 10-2 and Gator Bowl champions and were regarded as near-cinches for a bid to the NCAA or National Invitation Tournament in New York City.

Durham took over as head coach when long-time FSU mentor Bud Kennedy died and has a 48-31 record in three seasons going into Friday night's home game with Miami.

He is from Kentucky and played his college basketball at Florida State. He is married to the former Malinda Dixon of Jacksonville.

WASHINGTON, DC - Florida State University's strong basketball team was placed on probation for two more years Sunday by the National Collegiate Athletic Association which said further recruiting violations were committed while the team already was on probation.

The new action means the team cannot participate in postseason touraments this year or next. The latest probation runs through Oct. 29, 1971.

Florida State has an 11-2 record this season and had been considered a candidate for either the NCAA of National Invitational tournaments. It has lost only to North Carolina and Southern California.

Durham's job apparently will be saved as FSU President J. Stanley Marshall, who appeared before the NCAA with Dean Harold Goldstein of the Faculty Athletic Committee and Athletic Director Vaughn Mancha, commented, "On the basis of the NCAA Council's hearing...and our handling of the case, there is no cause for further disciplinary action against Coach Durham."

Durham was not available for comment.

Arthur J. Bergstrom, assistant executive director of the NCAA, said Sunday he could only recall two other instances of member institutions - Auburn and Indiana - violating the rules while already on probation.

Florida State's new violation occurred last May, according to the NCAA Council, which handed out the new probation.

The council said a business organization in which "a representative of the university's athletic interests has considerable holdings" provided round-trip air transportation to three prospective athletes from their homes to the organization's headquarters "and lavishly entertained them" at various times in the presence of Durham and one of his assistants.

The council, in reprimanding and censuring Florida State and Durham, warned the school that any future violation by Durham could result in Florida State's being suspended or expelled by the NCAA.

However, it noted also that one of the reasons the current penalty was limited to two years was Florida State's curtailment of Durham's activities last Thursday.

The University placed Durham on probation for an indefinite period, ordered him not to recruit personally either on or off campus and prohibited him from engaging in other activities related to his position, such as speeches, clinics, workshops, basketball camps or radio-television appearances. He must stick to coaching the team.

FSU President Marshall added, "I am satisfied that the NCAA Council...gave full and fair consideration to the university's disciplinary action and to the welfare of our intercollegiate athletic program."

Marshall said he would elaborate further later in the week.

TALLAHASSEE - Hugh Durham, Florida State's basketball coach, is an intense young man, and his eyes sparkled with fire in FSU President J. Satnley Marshall's executive suite Tuesday morning as he answered queries in a special news conference Marshall had called to "clear the air" over FSU's recent probation by the NCAA.

"I am not going to resign, have had no intentions to resign and I want to put the rumor to rest once and for all," Durham said in answer to a reporter's question.

The young basketball mentor was precise and to the point when asked if he knew his actions of recruitment would bring about the university's and NCAA censure.

"I read the NCAA manual carefully, and my decision to allow our basketball signees to talk with Atlanta businessmen about summer jobs was a rational one. I could see no conflict, but the NCAA had a different interpretation."

In essence, then, Durham still felt that his decision was right in his own mind and was proper interpretation of NCAA rules, but that he will abide by the two-year probation on him and the FSU team and by the strict limitations imposed upon him by officials of the university.

Those limitations will keep him from recruiting in any manner, eliminate his radio and television shows and restrict his appearances at clinics and basketball camps.

The exact nature of the incident that brought about the censure on Durham was revealed by Marshall:

"A business acquaintance of a friend of the basketball program at Florida State used funds to entertain three prospective athletes on a trip to Atlanta last year. The youths were brought to Atlanta to be interviewed by Atlanta businessmen for summer jobs, and while there were taken to Atlanta Braves ball games and stayed in one of the better hotels in the city."

Marshall said such activity was appropriate for summer recruitment for jobs, but that Durham was in Atlanta at the same time and suggested to the businessmen that these athletes be hired. This is counter to NCAA rules.

"We ackowledge that while Coach Durham's intentions were good, his judgement was not, particularly in being present during the proceedings, and this was the basis for the university's actions."

Two of the players involved in the incident are now members of the Florida State basketball team while the third decided to go elsewhere.

Marshall said the university's actionwas for an indefinite period of time, but the situation will be reviewed in January of 1971.

Just who will do the recruiting for FSU's basketball program this coming year has not been determined. Assistant Coach Bill Clendinen is the likely one to do the job, even though he was in Atlanta with Durham when the other incident came about.

"Coach Clendinen was there under orderd from Coach Durham," Marshall revealed, "and therfore is not subject to similar restrictions."

MIAMI - Florida State has completed its basketball season with a 23-3 record, and this may be a reasonable time to examine some of the ramifications of the NCAA probation that denied the Seminoles a crack at a tournament and the national championship.

Did the team finish better than it otherwise would have, because its pride stung and challenged by that mid-January probation?

When the announcement of the probation came the team had already lost two of its three. The 85-81 setback at Jacksonville U. was the lone other.

I think the probation may have, in fact, spurred the team to a better finish than it otherwise would have had, though certainly it is talented enough to have done that well regardless.

Another interesting question is whether Florida State would have rounded up this talent had it not done the sort of things that brought probation. In other words, did the Seminoles get that talent by cheating?

The mark of Florida State basketball recruiting in recent years has been aggressive thoroughness. None of this talent was assembled by accident. Most top players were widely sought ones.

Florida State, when it drew a 1-year probation and then a 2-year one on top of it, was "convicted" by he NCAA of illegal entertainment of prospects. Nothing else.

In basketball recruiting, the Seminoles are and have been in an inferior competitive position, unable really to challenge the leading basketball-name schools for the cream of the prep crop.

The manner of Florida State's getting talent comparable to the best is rather obvious, really, having little or naught to do with excessive entertainment and-or violations of other NCAA rules. Florida State simply went after black players much more vigorously than any other school in the South, and maybe the East and Midwest.

It was, in all honesty, just about the only way for Florida State to get talent comparable to the best.

Coach Hugh Durham is one of the better recruiters in collegiate ranks. One thing, he tries to tell prospects pretty much how it is. More than one athlete has been impressed with his sincerity, his straight talk.

Though there was a natural resentment from some other schools because Florida State suddenly was a force of contention - for prospects, and on the court itself - the probation was not precipitated by any other school "blowing the whistle." It started about three years ago when a disgruntled player, no longer on the team, sat down and wrote a letter to the NCAA.

While Florida State certainly has not been guilty of greater sins than many another school, the NCAA was better able to document an initial case against the Seminoles because of that letter.

Had it not been for the letter, I'm convinced Florida State would have played in post-season tournaments three successive seasons - a mark of high distinction.

If all goes well, the Seminoles come off probation in October of 1971. Freshman recruited this year will not, for all practical purposes, be affected by the probation.

But Florida State does figure to have a difficult time recruiting as well this year as it has in the recent past, primarily because Durham cannot participate.

Nevertheless, Florida State seems to have already established a quite solid foundation for winning basketball in the future. The varsity of the next two years should be about as talented as this season's.

Over the long haul, the probation does not figure to adversely affect the program.

There's plenty of precedent for schools doing well athletically both during and following probation.

Kentucky, you may remember, did not play basketball at all for a full year following the great points-fixing scandal in which its players were involved.

Both Houston and Auburn, among others, survived long-term probations of their entire athletic programs, and came out of it continuing to field strong teams.

It's difficult to view Florida State's probation of the moment as one of those disguised blessings. But, in fact, it may be that.
