One of the most successful coaches in the college game, Litwhiler was attracted to Michigan State by a salary offer of more than $15,000 annually. Additional benefits were rumored.
FSU sought to retain him, in negotiations that had gone on for more than a week, but was unable to match the Michigan State offer.
He will leave soon for the new job, probably within two weeks, and FSU is already searching for a replacement.
In nine seasons at Florida State, Litwhiler coached the Seminoles into the District 3 playoffs seven times. They won the District three times and competed in the College World Series. His won-lost record here is 189-81. Last year's team won 26 games, a school record.
Six players made All-America during Litwhiler's time here.
A native of Pennsylvania, the 45-year-old Litwhiler has an impressive major league background, including one year when he played errorless ball in the outfield.
Hatfield replaced Danny Litwhiler who resigned in September to become baseball coach at Michigan State University.
Hatfield played 17 years of professional ball, including positions on the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox. He served as mamanger of the Little Rock (Ar) Travelers of the old Southern Association, where he was named manager of the year in 1960.

The stocky Tampa native collected 44 hits, six home runs, 67 total bases, 30 runs batted in and 21 bases on balls - all team highs.
Lanky Cliff Ranew won seven games for the Seminoles, but had to yield the strikeout title to lefthander Marty Howell who finished with a 6-6 record. In a brilliant two-game performance against Florida
last weekend, Howell fanned 20 batters, boosting his season total to 70.
Sophomore Ken Creely had the best record, winning four games in relief while losing none. Creely's 2.14 earned run average also led the staff.
Shortstop Larry Johnson and rightfielder Bob Wilcox were the only two regulars besides Suarez to hit over .300 on a team which had a .273 batting average. Johnson hit .317, with eight doubles - led
the team in that category. Wilcox hit .303 and drove in 27 runs.
Outfielder Monty McBryde led the Seminoles in stolen bases with eight, followed by second baseman Jim Reed and centerfielder Mike Augustine who had seven and six.
Augustine, an All-American last year with a .399 batting average, hit .294 this season. However, the Philadelphia, Pa, senior got 40 hits and struck out only five times.
Coach Fred Hatfield's team won 23 games, lost 13 in his first year at Florida State. Traditionally one of the nation's strongest teams, the Seminoles have never had a losing season in baseball.
Co-captains of the 1964 team were Reed and catcher Paul Dirks. Seniors were Reed, Augustine, Howell, Dirks, Johnson, first baseman George Rountree and pitcher Gary Williamson.
