Mike Martin to receive the 2024 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award. July 12, 2023 Mike Martin, Florida State University coaching legend and ABCA Hall of
Fame member Mike Martin is the distinguished recipient of the 2024 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award. Named after the great Lefty Gomez, this annual award is presented to an individual who has
contributed significantly to the game of baseball locally, nationally and internationally. The Lefty Gomez Award is presented by Wilson Sporting Goods and will be awarded during the Hall of Fame
Banquet at the ABCA Convention on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. Martin's legendary coaching career began in 1980 when he became the head baseball coach at Florida State after having
served as an assistant for the Seminoles for five seasons. Over the next 40 years, his teams would make 17 College World Series appearances while qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in each of his 40
seasons. Inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2007, Martin called it a career following the 2019 season, retiring as the NCAA's all-time winningest coach in any sport with a record 2,029 career
victories. The 13-time conference Coach of the Year led the Seminoles to 11 Metro Conference titles and nine ACC titles, while producing eight National Players of the Year and four Golden Spikes Award
winners. Off the field, Martin's student-athletes were selected to the academic team of distinction 72 times since its 2006 inception, while leading the ACC six times in 13 years. Three of Martin's
players earned ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors on five occasions, while his teams were twice honored with the ACC Sportsmanship Award. In addition to his work with the Fellowship of
Christian Athletes and in the Tallahassee community, the 47-year Lifetime ABCA Member has been a featured clinician at several ABCA Conventions. In 2019, Martin was honored with induction into the
National College Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 2020, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named its National Coach of the Year Award in his honor.

Leiter Leads Noles to 11-0 Win Over Butler.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In the first game since the passing of legendary coach Mike Martin - called '11' by Seminole faithful - Florida State began the 2024 season with an 11-0 win over Butler on Friday night on Mike Martin Field on Dick Howser Stadium. Making his Seminole debut, right-hander Cam Leiter struck out 13 batters and led the pitching staff to 22 total strikeouts while James Tibbs III recorded his second career grand slam.
FSU's Opening Day shutout matches its shutout total from 2023.
Leiter set a career-high with 13 strikeouts and were the most for a Nole in a season opener since Tony Avitable set the school record with 24 in 1956. He allowed just one hit and walked two on 89 pitches.
The second of four pitchers making their Florida State debut, junior college transfer Carson Dorsey began his relief outing in the top of the sixth and kept the strikeouts coming. He pitched 2.0 innings and sat down five more batters to bring the total to 18 strikeouts on the day. Freshmen Hudson Rowan and Matt Sauser each struck out a pair over 1.0 innings pitched.
After scoring three runs via wild pitch in the first two innings, Tibbs' grand slam in the sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Noles. It was his second career grand slam and he scored his 99th career run.
After Alex Lodise singled to plate Drew Faurot in the seventh inning, Max Williams and Cal Fisher hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth to provide the final margin. Both players homered in their first Seminole at-bat.

Holbrook, Arnold Lead Seminoles to First Series Victory.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State (2-0) clinched the shortened weekend series against Butler (0-2) with a 15-5 win on Sunday afternoon on Mike Martin Field at Dick Howser Stadium. McGwire Holbrook smashed a three-run homer while left-hander Jamie Arnold struck out nine batters with no earned runs.
Holbrook had a picturesque day at the plate hitting 3-for-3, scoring three runs, and five RBI. All records were career-best numbers for the senior catcher and his home run was his first as a Seminole.
Arnold began his sophomore season with a new career-high in nine strikeouts, did not walk a batter and allowed no earned runs in his start. He pitched 5.0 innings, marking his second-longest career outing on the mound.
In relief, Brennen Oxford and Ryan Denison each struck out two batters. With 14 more strikeouts Sunday, the pitching staff recorded 36 strikeouts in the two-game opening series.
Drew Faurot added three hits and is hitting .500 through two games. Jaime Ferrer plated a run with an RBI triple and James Tibbs III got FSU on the board in the first inning with an RBI double.
The Seminoles stole seven bases Sunday, its most in a game since 2016. FSU stole four bases in the second inning alone, matching its game high from the previous seven seasons.

Dorsey Strikes Out 10 in 3.2 Innings, Noles Beat Jacksonville.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Relief pitcher Carson Dorsey struck out 10 batters in 3.2 innings as Florida State (3-0) scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat Jacksonville (2-1) 7-4 Tuesday night at John Sessions Stadium.
Dorsey, a junior college transfer from Gulf Coast State College, entered after 5.1 innings from starter Conner Whittaker. After tying the game against Dorsey in the sixth inning, Jacksonville struck out nine times over the final three innings.
Cam Smith had three hits against the Dolphins, including a double in the ninth inning. James Tibbs walked and Jaime Ferrer had the game-winning RBI single. FSU also scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the final frame.
Florida State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning on a Daniel Cantu single. Sophomores DeAmez Ross and Smith singled before Tibbs walked, loading the bases for Cantu's one-out single. FSU has scored in the opening frame in all three games to begin the season.
Whittaker did not allow a base runner over the first three innings before the Dolphins got on the board in the fourth. Jacksonville singled, stole second and moved to third on an error before a sacrifice fly scored leadoff hitter Will Gale.
FSU answered with a pair of runs in the fifth, again from the top of the order. Ross drew a walk and stole second base; Smith singled to put runners on the corners and Tibbs singled to plate Ross. Smith made the score 4-1 Florida State on Ferrer's sacrifice fly.
The Dolphins started the fifth inning with a single and walk before Whittaker retired the next three batters to maintain FSU's margin. Jacksonville did tie the game with three runs in the sixth inning, but shortstop Alex Lodise retired the go-ahead run at the plate to end the inning with the score tied at 4-4.
Jacksonville's only two runners against Dorsey in the final three innings came on a pair of walks. Dorsey's final line was 3.2 innings, 1 earned run on 2 hits and 10 strikeouts.

Noles Complete Sweep with 20-7 Win.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State (6-0) completed its second sweep of the season over Western Carolina (3-4) with a final score of 20-7 at Dick Howser Stadium Sunday afternoon. The bats continued to stay hot as James Tibbs had Florida State's first multi-home run game of the season and four players had multi-hit games.
Relief pitcher Noah Short (1-0) entered in the first inning and held Western Carolina to two runs, limiting what could have been a bigger inning after the first three Catamount hitters reached base. Freshman Matt Sauser entered the game in the second frame, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four.
Like it did Friday night, Florida State answered Western Carolina with four runs of its own in the first inning and never looked back. FSU built its lead to 11-2 on Tibbs' grand slam in the third inning, his second grand slam of the season.
Second baseman Drew Faurot was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI in the game. For the weekend, Faurot finished 8-for-11 with six extra base hits, seven RBI and six runs scored.

Dinges, Charles Lead Noles Past Cardinals.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 17 Florida State (21-3, 4-3 ACC) defeated Louisville (16-10, 2-5 ACC) 8-3 Thursday evening at Dick Howser Stadium to take game one of the three-game series.
Designated hitter Marco Dinges paced the Seminole offense, finishing 3-for-4 with three runs and five RBI. The Beekman, New York, native hit two double and a grand slam, his seventh home run of the season.

Errors Prove Costly in Loss vs. Louisville.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 17 Florida State (21-4, 4-4 ACC) fell to Louisville (17-10, 3-5 ACC) 5-2 Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium to even the series at one game a piece.
Four costly errors got the best of the Seminoles early, leading to four of the Cardinals five runs. Louisville took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning off the bat of Logan Beard, hitting a two-run home run deep into right-center field.
FSU rallied late in the ninth inning; trailing 5-1, FSU earned three singles to plate a run and bring the tying run to the plate, but a ground out to second base ended the game.
The Noles were led offensively by Marco Dinges, who had a great day at the plate as the Seminoles designated hitter. Dinges accounted for nearly half of the Seminoles team hits going 3-for-4, including a triple, and scored a run for the Noles.
Jamie Arnold (5-1) had his seventh start of the season for the Noles. Arnold pitched 6.0 innings, giving up five runs, one of which was earned, four hits, two walks, and struck out seven in the loss. He entered Friday as the nation's ERA leader at 0.52; that now sits at 0.66 after four of Louisville's runs were unearned.

Arnold, Ferrer Power Noles at Boston College.
BRIGHTON, Mass. - Sophomore Jamie Arnold allowed two earned runs in 7.0 innings to keep his season ERA under 1.00 and Jaime Ferrer launched a pair of home runs in Florida State's 12-4 win at Boston College Friday afternoon. The Seminoles improved to 25-4 overall and 6-4 in the ACC, while the Eagles dropped to 16-12 and 5-8 in the league.
Arnold, who was named to the midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list, is now 6-1 with a 0.94 ERA after matching a career high with 7.0 innings pitched. He added nine strikeouts and did not allow a run after a three-run home run gave the Eagles the lead in the third inning.
Ferrer answered with a solo home run, plated two runs on a two-out error that tied the game at 3-3 and added a three-run home run to push the FSU lead to 10-3 in the sixth inning. It was Ferrer's second career multi-home run game, with the first coming at TCU last season.
Ferrer's 11 home runs are second-most on the team and the most in a season for the third-year Seminole.
Eight of FSU's nine starters had at least one hit, and all nine reached safely. James Tibbs, Marco Dinges and Drew Faurot had a pair of hits, with Faurot hitting a solo home run in the ninth inning, his fourth of the season. Tibbs and Ferrer are each hitting .429 over 10 ACC games this season.
Noah Short and Connor Hults pitched 1.0 innings in relief of Arnold.

Four-Run First Enough as Noles Beat No. 6 Duke.
DURHAM, N.C. - Powered by Jaime Ferrer's three-run home run, No. 10 Florida State scored four runs in the first inning to beat No. 6 Duke, 4-2, Friday evening at Jack Coombs Field. Starting pitcher Jamie Arnold improved to 8-1 with another nine-strikeout performance, while Brennen Oxford and Connor Hults combined for four scoreless innings to preserve the lead.
Ferrer's home run came in his first at-bat after he missed his first career game Tuesday night. Ferrer has 13 home runs on the season, a career-high.
The Blue Devils scored runs in the first and third innings, but Arnold, Oxford and Hults kept Duke off the board over the final six frames. Arnold threw 103 pitches over 5.0 innings, with nine strikeouts and five hits allowed. Oxford pitched 3.1 innings with five strikeouts, while Hults earned his third save of the season. Hults entered with runners on the corners and one out in the ninth, forcing a lineout and strikeout to end the game.
Cam Smith singled and scored on Marco Dinges' single in the first inning, pushing his on-base streak to 51 games. He also laid out for the second out in the ninth inning, snagging a ball that likely would have tied the game down the left-field line for Duke.

Noles Hold Off No. 6 Duke, Clinch Series.
DURHAM, N.C. - No. 10 Florida State (34-8, 13-7 ACC) got three home runs from its offense and a stellar performance from starting pitcher Carson Dorsey to beat No. 6 Duke (29-14, 13-10), 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Jack Coombs Field. Freshman John Abraham earned his first career save with two outs in the ninth inning, entering with runners on second and third and FSU leading by a run.
Dorsey made his fourth start of the season, and FSU improved to 4-0 in those games. Dorsey allowed two runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings and struck out eight batters over 102 pitches.
FSU led 7-2 when Dorsey exited, but the Blue Devils clawed back with three runs in the eighth inning and a leadoff home run in the ninth. Duke had runners on second and third when Abraham relieved Andrew Armstrong; Abraham forced a pop-up and a hard line drive right to second baseman Cal Fisher to secure the win.
Fisher opened the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning, his fourth of the year. Jaime Ferrer homered for the second straight game and Marco Dinges gave FSU a 5-2 lead with a three-run homer in the fifth inning, his 11th of the year.
Cam Smith had two hits and drew two walks to extend his on-base streak to 52 games, the ninth-longest in program history.
