1983 Florida State Signees/Newcomers

From the 1983 FSU Football Media Guide, page 38.

Louis Berry, 6-0, 180, P, Panama City - Booted for a 42.4 average during his senior season while using a rare one-step technique...should challenge immediately for the starting job at FSU...punts the ball extremely high...earned all-state honors and is one of three Mosley products to ink with the Seminoles...father was an assistant coach at Southern Miss while his uncle is John James, former Atlanta Falcon punter.

J.P. Connolly, 6-0, 180, QB, Oakdale, N.Y. - Originally caught the eye of Bobby Bowden when he was in high school...spent last year in a prep school where he threw for 1,462 yards and 13 touchdowns...in two years as a high school quarterback threw for 2,800 yards and 23 touchdowns...was coached by his father at Connetquot High School.

Herb Gainer, 6-2, 180, WR, Sarasota - This talented receiver earned All-South and Class 4-A all-state honors...considered one of the two best receivers in state...member of the Florida "Sweet 16" team...could play offense or defense...recruited by all the biggies, including Penn State, Michigan, Pittsburgh and Ohio State.

Bruce Heggie, 6-4, 235, OLB, Saint Louis, Mo. - First team all-stater who was approached by over 45 major colleges...big yet mobile and could help early...speed is 4.7 in the 40 yards...bench presses 370 pounds...captain of high school team and good student...also played basketball.

Darrin Holloman, 5-7, 165, RB, Tallahassee - The exploits of Holloman are well-known in Tallahassee...established a state record when he rushed for 435 yards in 20 carries against Gonzalez Tate enroute to a 3,000-yard all-purpose performance last year...4.6 speed in the 40 helped him to an average of over 11 yards per carry as a senior...scored 32 touchdowns...could find himself with duties as FSU's punt returner...All-South and Coaches All-American team...will enroll in the Air Force ROTC program and aspires to be a pilot.

Fred Jones, 6-3, 225, LB, Miami - Although just a second team all-state pick, recruiting "experts" in the South have him rated as one of the top linebackers...made Bill Buchalter's "Sweet 16" list...teammate of incoming freshman Pablo Lopez...could contribute early.

Pablo Lopez, 6-6, 245, OL, Miami - Highly recruited offensive lineman who was contacted by most of the nation's powers...Georgia and Alabama were among his final picks...all-state and All-South honors...also named to several All-American teams, including Adidas.

Eric Mangham, 5-10, 165, QB-DB, Atlanta, Ga. - On Georgia's 2-A all-state team as the quarterback...probably figures more in FSU's defensive secondary...as a defensive back in high school had a school record nine interceptions...one Atlanta TV station tabbed him as its prep Player of the Year...standout sprinter and excellent student.

Grady Martin, 6-3, 245, DL, Orlando - Because he played a new position as a senior (linebacker), Martin's post season honors were few...right now coaches think he could contribute on either side of the line...had 66 solo tackles and 77 assists for 138 as a senior...also had four interceptions and scored a touchdown...punted for a 41.8 average.

Martin Mayhew, 5-8, 164, DB, Tallahassee - The only freshman to attend spring drills early...got hurt the first week of drills but was able to participate for most of the sessions...described by defensive coordinator Jack Stanton as "making progress that a typical freshman would make"...good speed makes up for his lack of size...a tough hitter...first team all-state and three-year starter.

Danny McManus, 6-1, 180, QB, Hollywood - Rated as one of the top two quarterbacks in the state...passed for 1,400 yards as a senior and his two-year total was 2,700...in one game passed for 413 yards...All-Broward County...recruited by Michigan State, Temple and Pitt.

Cleveland McNabb, 6-1, 179, DB, Fort Walton Beach - Earned second team 4-A honors as a defensive back...also served as Choctaw's punter and averaged 41 yards per kick...MVP of his high school team.

Orlando Miles, 6-1, 210, LB, Birmingham, Ala. - Strong and quick player with necessary ingredients to play linebacker...runs a 4.6 40 and bench presses 350 pounds...has played tailback, fullback and center...Adidas honorable mention All-America.

Greg Newell, 5-11, 195, DB, Panama City - One of three Mosley products to sign with the Seminoles...earned third team 3-A honors as a defensive back...also played some at receiver...member of the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes organizations.

John Ricciardi, 6-3, 185, DB, Jacksonville - Talented all-around athlete...made the state honor roll as a defensive back...will add considerable size to the secondary...participant in the decathlon in high school and has pole vaulted just under 15-0 and long jumped 23-1...had a knee operation several months back to repair damaged cartliage...will room with fellow signee and long-time friend Chuck Wells.

Ulysses Roberson, 6-4, 215, LB, Auburndale - Went virtually unnoticed by recruiters until late in his senior season...he was noticed enough to earn AAA all-state honors as an offensive lineman...headed the Orlando Sentinel's central Florida team as linebacker...could help early.

Dave Schrenker, 6-3, 245, OL, Panama City - Versatile lineman who completes the trio of Mosley graduates to sign with FSU...center looks to be his natural position...reaped first team all-state honors as an offensive lineman...Bay County Player of the Year in 1982.

Roosevelt Snipes, 5-9, 172, RB, Sarasota - Originally signed with Florida State out of Sarasota High School in 1981...coaches feel this one will play right away...rushed for more than 1,000 yards and averaged 10 yards per carry...Oklahoma was the loser in the battle for Snipes...also finished in top three at J.C. 100-meter dash and runs a 4.4 40 yards...will have three years of eligibility remaining...his first duties could be in the return area.

Eric Stiehl, 6-5, 225, OLB, Neptune Beach - Played his way onto the Florida Times Union's Top 24 team as a defensive end...as a junior, graded out at 81 percent...a broken knee cap suffered while playing basketball shortened his senior season...will be just 17 when he puts an FSU jersey on this fall...great growth potential.

Shawn Thomas, 6-4, 260, DL, Columbus, Ohio - Comes from the same high school that FSU plucked linebacker Stuart Wyatt out of last year...most recruiting observers didn't notice him at first but now they're calling him a sleeper...picked FSU over Purdue, Maryland, Tennessee and Wisconsin...averaged 10 tackles a game as a senior on his way to honorable mention all-state honors.

Terry Warren, 6-1, 210, OLB, Tallahassee - Played linebacker as a senior at Leon High School and as a junior at Titusville Astronaut...has size and speed to play several different positions on the defense...brother Scott was a former defensive standout who played on 11-0 team of 1979 that went to the Orange Bowl...former FSU ball boy.

Chuck Wells, 6-0, 200, DB, Jacksonville - Rated as one of the top 24 prospects in the Jacksonville area...was one of the state's premier triple jumpers...attended FSU's football camp last summer and made a big impression on Seminole coaches...all-state performer for Orange Park.

Gaylon White, 6-1, 210, LB-TE, Atlanta, Ga. - Two-year all-state selection at linebacker but is also a highly touted tight end where FSU coaches may use him...Atlanta Journal-Constitution Back of the Year as a senior...rushed for 400 yards and 12 TDs at fullback and caught 52 passes as a senior...made 126 tackles...highly recruited by most major colleges, including Georgia, Clemson and Alabama...member of Street and Smith's top 100 list...coached by Thurston Taylor, a former Seminole player in the '60s.

Randy White, 6-0, 165, DB-WR, Marianna - Although listed as a defensive back, Randy will get a shot at wide receiver...earned first team all-state honors after catching 45 passes for 1,006 yards as a senior.

Eric Williams, 5-9, 175, WR-DB, Clearwater - Caught 30 passes as a senior for 905 yards and 12 touchdowns...like Randy White, he'll probably get a look at as a wide receiver but coaches recruited him to help in the defensive backfield...had 11 interceptions as a senior defensive back...third team all-state.

Whew!
Seminoles score 47 points and need every single one.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Eric Riley, new cornerback, was quite a late hero as Florida State struggled from behind to squeeze past East Carolina 47-46 in an incredible football game here Saturday night.

With the Seminoles trailing 46-41 and six minutes left, Riley intercepted a pass - thanks to a tipped ball by teammate Pat Milligan - to give the Seminoles a shot from the visitors 21.

FSU scored the winning touchdown moments later on Kelly Lowrey's 5-yard pass to Tom Wheeler, a surprising tight end all evening.

Moments later Riley choked off East Carolina's last hope when he recovered a fumble following a 39-yard run by quarterback Kevin Ingram to FSU's 31.

As FSU rolled up 555 yards to Carolina's 389, Lowrey hit on 28 of 35 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns. Greg Allen ran 33 times for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Cedric Jones pounded 17 times on runs for 92.

At halftime, Florida State had 270 yards of offense - and East Carolina 223. Lowrey had hit on 14 of 17 passes for 187 yards. Allen had run 17 times for 86.

Henry Williams tucked in the second-half kickoff, streaked for the sidelines and raced 98 yards for a touchdown that, with a point kick, put Florida State behind 37-27.

From its 39, after a short kickoff, Florida State responded. Lowrey throws moved the yardsticks. It came to fourth-and-3 at the 33. Lowrey passed to Johnson at the 26 to keep things going. Jessie Hester caught one at the eight. On a flawless pass, Lowrey hit Hassan Jones streaking into the end zone for a touchdown. A kick by Philip Hall narrowed it to 37-34.

Soon a personal foul helped move East Carolina to FSU's 45. Ingram followed with a pass to Walden at the 8.

Three plays got only 4. Fourth down, and Heath kicked a 21-yard field goal for 40-34.

From their 18, the Seminoles drove again. Lowrey passes and the running of Cedric Jones keyed a push to a first down at the Pirate 35. Johnson pulled in a pass at the 18 and Jones slipped to the 11 on a run. Soon Allen took a pitchout and scored from the 1. Hall's point put FSU ahead for the first time since the first quarter, 41-40. The clock showed 3:43 left in the third quarter.

Ingram's runs speedily had the visitors in FSU territory. Fourth down at the 32, and linebacker Henry Taylor blocked a 48-yard try for a field goal by Heath.

FSU joy was short-lived. Clint Harris, the safety, clobbered Greg Allen on a first-down run, forcing a fumble that Pegues claimed for the Pirates at FSU's 35.

Chopping runs soon had a first down at FSU's 12 as the last quarter opened. Ingram slipped to the 2 on still another keeper. Ernest Byner, the fullback, slammed up the middle for six points. Pat Milligan broke up a passing try to Walden for two points, leaving it 46-41.

From their 28, FSU drove to frustration. It was a versatile mix of passes and runs that led them to a first down at the Pirate 16. On third down, Roosevelt Snipes was about two feet short. Greg Allen banged up the middle - got nothing. East Carolina took over.

On third down at the 11, an Ingram pass was tipped by Milligan and intercepted by Eric Riley at the 21.

A penalty assisted FSU to the 14. Greg Allen slapped to the six and a first down.

Two plays later Lowrey threw 5 yards to Wheeler for a touchdown. A passing try for two points was broken up by Calvin Adams. And it was 47-46 with 4:36 left.

On a third-down run, Ingram broke free for 39 yards to FSU's 31 but fumbled. Florida State recovered with 3:39 left.

Riley, the cornerback, claimed the fumble.

Cedric Jones popped for 22 to the Pirate 47. On runs, the Seminoles squeezed on down to the 30 - where it came to fourth-and-4. East Carolina called a time-out with 36 seconds left. On a pitchout, Greg sped to the first down at the 22.

The inspired visitors utilized their last time-outs. Soon time truckled away, and the Seminoles walked off the field about as happy to win a game as they had ever been.

Before the beginning, East Carolina pulled a switch. After winning the pre-game coin toss, the Pirates chose to receive - at the start of the second half. A new rule this season makes that delayed option possible for the first time.

Starting at the 20 following the kickoff, the Seminoles moved quickly to the 34 on a short Greg Allen run and a penalty. Two more runs by Greg led to a first down at the Pirate 43, but Cedric Jones fumbled and Hal Stephens recovered for the Pirates at the 39.

A quick pass and a couple of runs boosted the visitors to FSU's 37 and a first down. Cornerback Eric Riley tipped away an on-the-money bomb from Kevin Ingram to Ricky Nichols, waiting in the end zone.

Inspired by that gem, FSU defenders stiffened. On fourth down at the 34, Jeff Heath kicked a 51-yard field goal for 3-0.

Lowrey passes of 14 and 11 yards vaulted FSU to its 46, and Allen led on to a first down at the Carolina 42. Tony Johnson snared a 14-yard throw at the 26. On fourth down at the 19, needing 3, the Seminoles gambled.

Lowrey sailed a short, wide pass to the tall Thompson, who rambled to the 2 before being pulled down.

Greg Allen pounded up the middle for the touchdown. Philip Hall added a point, making it 7-3.

A penalty against East Carolina for having too many men on the field for the touchdown enabled FSU to kick off from its 45.

Barry Barco, a freshman walk-on from Orange Park, tried an onside kick, and safety Brian McCrary crashed in to claim the ball for Florida State at the Pirate 35.

On third down from the 37, Lowrey passed to Johnson at the 14. Two Greg Allen runs gained the 9, but Jones got not an inch. It was fourth down, and Lowrey faked brightly, then threw to wide-open tight end Tom Wheeler for an easy touchdown.

On the conversion attempt, an errant snap resulted in no attempt, leaving it 13-3.

A good kickoff return following by a nifty option run by Ingram got Carolina to midfield. A third-down draw by John Walden got 12 to FSU's 35.

Promptly, Ingram threw long to tight end Norwood Vann in the end zone for a touchdown. Heath's point kick cut FSU's lead to 13-10.

A roughing-the-passer penalty on the touchdown throw gave East Carolina a kickoff chance from its 45 - and it, too, tried an onsider. It, too, was successful, with kicker Heath recovering at FSU's 32.

Nichols grabbed a pass at the 21. Baker smacked to the 15. Two plays later, on a keeper, Ingram scored from the 14. Heath booted the point for a 17-13 East Carolina lead with 1:02 left in the first quarter.

On the opening play of the second quarter, Lowrey hit Hassan Jones for 17 at FSU's 44, then nailed him again at Carolina's 40. Thompson hauled in a 31-yarder at the 19. Greg Allen pounded to the 8.

Greg agate lost 2. A pass missed. Third down at the 10, and East Carolina called a time-out. Then came a draw play - with Greg Allen putting a wiggle up the middle for an easy touchdown. Hall added a point, and FSU led again 20-17.

Here came Carolina right back. Ingram's running and passing led to FSU's 45. Another Ingram keeper reached the 32. Three more plays, highlighted by Baker's 15-yard scamper, brought another first down at the 3. Rocky Kinsey slipped through to deck Baker for a loss of 2. But on third down, a bright fake sent Walden wide to score easily.

On second down at FSU's 42, defensive end Jeff Pegues knocked the ball out of Lowrey's hands as he tried to pass. Cedric Jones recovered the fumble at the 23. Then interference was ruled on Weegie Thompson as he streaked downfield and pushed a defender. That set the Seminoles back on the 11 for fourth down.

And there freshman Louis Berry was called on for his first punt.

It was long aplenty, but the Seminoles couldn't cover it. Henry Williams, a speedster, picked his was through for a 56-yard scoring return. Heath boosted it to 30-20 with his point.

’Noles stun LSU with 40-35 victory

BATON ROUGE, LA – Playing brilliant football just before and just after intermission, Florida State slammed LSU here Saturday, 40-35, in a game that was not remotely as close as the final score.

Kelly Lowrey, the Seminoles’ superb senior quarterback, ran for three touchdowns and passed for a couple more.

Greg Allen, the nation’s leading scorer last year, ran for 201 yards on 22 carries and scored on a 28-yard run.

Behind 14-0 early, the Seminoles rallied to go ahead 33-14 before LSU came back in the final minutes against Seminole reserves.

It was Florida State’s fifth straight game in Tiger stadium, and a record crowd of 79,665 fans saw the Seminoles go home with a remarkable fourth victory in that series.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of this one was that Florida State recovered so superbly from a heavy run of mistakes.

But, then, these Seminoles rarely do anything the easy way.

Under threatening, overcast skies, with the temperature a steaming 88 degrees, LSU got the football first after Florida State won the coin toss and, surprisingly, chose to kick off.

From the 21, Dalton Hilliard carried three straight times – the last an 8-yard scoot to the 34.

Then Hilliard caught a 7-yard pass. Soon the sophomore tailback broke right for 34 yards to FSU’s 21. Fullback Gene Lang slammed to the 11. Then Hilliard pounded up the middle for an easy touchdown. A point kick by Juan Betenzos made it 7-0.

From the 25, Florida State opened with a one-back offense. On the first play that lonesome back, Cedric Jones, pounded for 12 yards. Weegie Thompson pulled in a 20-yard Lowrey pass at the LSU 40, and soon Cedric Jones caught a 16-yarder at the 20.

A penalty for an illegal receiver downfield cost FSU five yards and loss of a down. Eugene Daniel broke up an end-zone pass to Hassan Jones. On a run, Cedric Jones scrambled to the 16.

Fourth down saw Philip Hall try a field goal from 33 yards out. It was wide right.

But two plays later, cornerback Eric Riley intercepted Jeff Wickersham’s pass and raced 22 yards to LSU’s 13.

Greg Allen got only a yard. On a screen pass, Cedric Jones reached the 8. Then, swinging wide with an open field in front of him, Greg Allen unaccountably fumbled and LSU claimed the ball at the 9.

A third-down draw by Lang gained 11 to the 25. Lang, two plays later, was almost loose on a pass from Wickersham, but Brian McCrary stopped him after a 34-yard gain to FSU’s 42.

Hilliard runs led to a first down at the 16. When Lang banged the middle, outside linebacker Brian Williams hit him hard, forcing a fumble that eluded FSU pursuers. It rolled into the end zone, and Hillird recovered it for an LSU touchdown. A point kick brought the score to 14-0.

After two futile passes from the FSU 27, Lowrey pitched out to Allen for 16 yards. On the last play of the quarter, Allen caught a pass for 12 to LSU’s 45.

After Rydell Malancon sacked Lowrey for a loss of seven, Cedric Jones ran for eight and Greg Allen for nine to the LSU 35. But Lowrey again was racked up trying to pass – this time losing 11.

On 4th and 11 at the 36, the Seminoles gambled – Lowrey passing to Hassan Jones for 14 at the 22. Cedric Jones slipped to the 10 on a wide run. But then Clarence Osborne batted a pass as Lowrey tried to throw and intercepted it at the 15.

Third down at the 21 found Garry James breaking wide to the 42. The defense held, soon forcing a punt – the first FSU had seen this season. Clay Parker’s boot was a beaut, 52 yards to FSU’s 12.

A holding call slapped the Seminoles back to their nine, and they could not recover. On fourth down, freshman Louis Berry punted 43 yards to LSU’s 43.

McCrary’s interception of a Wickersham shot placed FSU in position at its 38.

Greg Allen runs of 16 and 10 yards led to the LSU 35. Wheeler snared a pass at the 25. Two plays later Thompson collared a pass as he stepped out of bounds at the one. Next play Lowrey sneaked in for the touchdown. Hall added a point, cutting it to 14-7 with 2:57 left in the half.

With 40 seconds left in the half, Florida State got the ball back at its 40 after the defense forced a second LSU punt.

Cedric Jones rambled to the LSU 34 on a pass. Jessie Hester caught one at the 15, and got 5 yards more on a face-mask penalty.

A pass-interference call in the end zone, with Hassan Jones the beneficiary, presented Florida State with the ball at the one with two seconds left. On an option play, Lowrey kept the ball and rolled into the end zone for an easy touchdown. Hall’s point kick tied it 14-14 as time ran out in the half.

The Seminoles began at their 38 after the second-half kickoff.

Cedric Jones got nine before Greg Allen swept for 16, and then 18 – down to the 16. Then Lowrey went wide and deep to Hassan Jones with a 16-yard scoring pass, and Hall’s kick put FSU up 21-14.

Soon afterwards McCrary caused a fumble with a tackle after a reception, and Rocky Kinsey’s recovery gave FSU the ball it its 46.

Two Cedric Jones runs reached the LSU 38. A pass to Thompson keyed a first down at the 20.

From there Lowrey threw to a streaking Hester 20 yards for a touchdown. After 49 successes, Hall was wide on an extra-point try, and it was 27-14.

From the 20, Florida State whipped to the 35 on three runs as the quarter ran out.

Two more runs, by Greg Allen, put the ball on the 43. On a last-second pitchout, Allen then slashed for 21 to the LSU 36. A swing pass to Cedric Jones put the ball on the 23.

After Lowrey was flagged on an intentional-grounding call, coach Bobby Bowden dashed onto the field to protest.

On the next play, a draw, Greg Allen took an angel and soon was loose on a scoring romp into the end zone. Hall again missed a point, and it stayed 33-14.

With 5:47 left, Junius Dural pulled in a 46-yard bomb from Wickersham at the FSU 8. With a pitchout, Hilliard swept into the end zone. A point narrowed things to 33-21.

Tony Johnson could not get a handle on LSU’s onside kick, and finally Chris Cruz claimed it for the Tigers at Florida State’s 47.

Wickersham threw four straight passes – one rubbed out by penalty. The last of those left the Tigers a yard short of a fourth down at the 38. Hilliard slammed into the middle of the line – and got nothing.

Florida State took over.

On a keeper, Lowrey cut inside for the touchdown – his third of the day. Hall’s point was true, and it was 40-21 with 1:46 to go.

The clock read 57 seconds after Wickersham found Eric Martin with a 40-yard pass at FSU’s 11. An interference call against Rocky Kinsey in the end zone provided a first down on the one. James swept for the touchdown, and a point kick made it 40-28.

LSU worked another successful onside kick, this one recovered by Toby Caston at its 45.

Martin caught a 15-yard pass. Herman Fontenot then hauled in one at the 16. Wickersham rambled to the one. James scored, and a point kick cut it to 40-35 with seconds left.

But Hassan Jones came up for the Seminoles with LSU’s third onside kick. Lowrey fell on the ball a couple of times. And a strange, remarkable football game was finally over.

Gold Hush.
English speaks, Seminoles listen.

NEW ORLEANS – In an unexpected way in an unexpected place, the magic and the luck and the talent were no longer enough for Florida State.

The gods of football were smiling on the other side for a change, and Tulane won 34-28 here Saturday afternoon before 35,463 amazed Superdome fans.

The difference?

It must have been that the Seminoles found themselves in the well once too often – behind early 14-0 after one Tulane player ran 99 yards with an intercepted pass and another danced 76 yards to score on a punt return.

Florida State rallied to tie 14-14, then went ahead 21-14 in the last seconds of that first half, But that was all.

Soon Tulane was back up 31-21. After it became 34-28, the Seminoles had one turn with the football – and could not complete a pass.

Tulane was a football team that felt its back was to the wall. It was stung by the adversity of one quarterback quitting during the week and the eligibility of another being decided in court. Almost certainly Jon English, quarterback son of coach Wally English, will be ruled ineligible. Perhaps some Tulane games, including this one, will be forfeited.

But it will be of no consolation to Florida State. Some dreams were shattered here Saturday.

For the second straight week, Florida State chose to start to go on defense after winning the pregame coin toss, electing to receive at the start of the second half.

A draw on second down by Tulane’s Elton Veals picked up 22 yards to the Tulane 42.

FSU’s Pat Milligan came in on a third-down safety blitz to sack quarterback English for a loss of 10, forcing a punt to FSU’s 31.

Two Greg Allen runs reached the FSU 47. Cedric Jones popped loose for 12 yards, then Allen for 9 more. Behind a Kelly Lowrey block. Jessie Hester rambled on a reverse to the 19 and a first down. Greg Allen slipped wide on the following play to the 8.

Two plays later, safety Treg Songy dashed in front of a wide Lowrey pass, intercepted and had clear sailing down the sidelines 99 yards for a touchdown. An extra-point kick by Tony Wood put Florida State in a 7-0 hole.

On a third-down reverse, Hester got away once more, this time for 34 yards to Tulane’s 41. But Allen was stopped in his tracks for a loss as he took a handoff, and two passes missed.

On the punt, fair-catch interference by freshman Grady Martin helped Tulane to its 32.

Passes of 11 yards to Wayne Smith and 17 to Mark Savini soon had the Green Wave at FSU’s 38.

It came to fourth-and-2 at the 30, with Mike Jones hitting the middle of the line and coming up short. Florida State took over.

Greg Allen ran to the 39, but two passes missed. Then Lowrey was sacked by tackle Clint Wenzel for a loss of 15 yards back to the 24 as the first quarter ended.

Curt Baham gathered in freshman Louis Berry’s long, long punt and sped up the middle 76 yards for an easy touchdown that, with the point-after kick, put the home team out in front 14-0.

Three plays by FSU from its 24 netted only a couple of yards. A punt gave Tulane a start at its 33.

Jones took a handoff and skipped 21 yards to FSU’s 46. Two more runs got a first down at the 36, but Florida State defenders called a halt at the 30. On fourth down, Tony Wood’s 48-yard try for a field goal hit the crossbar and bounced back inside.

Greg Allen ran for 8 and Jones for 16 to the Tulane 45, but the Seminoles stalled as Allen fumbled and teammate Tom Wheeler recovered. A pass-interference call on Tulane gave the Seminoles a lift – and a first down – at the 37. Jones whipped wide on a run to the 8. On the next play, Allen skipped to the right side and scored easily. Philip Hall added a point, cutting it to 14-7 with 7:43 left in the half.

In three snaps, the Seminoles tied it 14-14.

On the first one, from the Tulane 19, English threw deep, and Brian McCrary intercepted at FSU’s 45. On the second, Lowrey threw long to a streaking Hester for an effortless-looking touchdown, a 55-yard play. And on the third one, Hall swung a toe to tie it as the clock showed 7:21.

Right away English came back with another deep pass. This one was stolen by FSU cornerback Eric Riley at the Seminole 36.

Tony Johnson grabbed a 12-yard Lowrey toss at the 48. On another third-down pass, Tom Wheeler gained 14 to the 37. At third down once again, Hester caught a 21-yarder at the 17.

From the 15, Cedric jones took a swing pass and seemed headed for a touchdown – but he fumbled when hit about the 4, Tulane recovering at the 2.

With Wade Elmore replacing English at quarterback, Tulane nursed the ball out to the 10.

With no time-outs left and 50 seconds remaining in the half, Florida State got the ball at Tulane’s 47 after a punt.

Greg Allen, on a run, got 12, and a pass to Allen gained 25.

Hassan Jones snared a pass at the 12 just before going out of bounds. The clock showed 11 seconds. Interference was called as Hester tried to catch a Lowrey shot in the end zone. FSU had the ball at the 6 with six seconds left.

Allen plunged over the middle for the touchdown, bulling over a tackler who hit him short of the line. Hall kicked the extra point, and the Seminoles took a 21-14 lead into intermission.

At this point, Florida State had run up 326 yards, with 190 of it running. Allen had churned for 75 yards on 21 carries.

Tulane had 101 yards, 64 of them on the ground.

Lowrey had completed just eight of his 19 passes for 136 yards.

From its 27, after the third-quarter kickoff, Florida State got to its 47 on Allen’s running before a punt left Tulane at its 14.

But a pass to Wayne Smith and a personal-foul call against Eric Riley on an out-of-bounds play quickly got Tulane to midfield.

On a draw play at FSU’s 39, Veals slanted wide and went all the way down the sidelines with splendid running. An extra-point tied it 21-21.

It was a nifty call in a second-and-22 situation and splendid execution.

From the 19, following the kickoff, Hester caught a pass at the 35. But soon the Seminoles were checked.

Berry punted, and swift Tyrone Vaughans tucked it in, moved right, then swung left on a return of 39 yards to FSU’s 39. The passing of English led to the 22, where it came to fourth down.

Tony Wood booted a 39-yard field goal to put Tulane up 24-21.

From the 20, a hard-pressed Lowrey scrambled, lost the football on the run and covered it for a 17-yard loss back at the 3. Allen got 7 back on a fake reverse and shot to the 24 on a draw.

Berry’s punt was short, to the Tulane 48. Back and forth the Green Wave went, with a couple of illegal-procedure penalties knocked out gains. Finally, on a key third-down pass, English found Larry Route with a 25-yard pass at FSU’s 20. As the third quarter ended, the home team was knocking at the Seminole 15.

In the end zone, Wayne Smith raced behind Milligan and tucked in English’s throw for the touchdown. Wood’s point made it 31-21 on the first play of the last quarter.

Contrary to signaled instructions, Roosevelt Snipes tried to run the kickoff from the end zone and was nailed at the 5.

Weegie Thompson collared two vital third-down passes, the first for 12 yards to the 14, the second for 20 to Tulane’s 49.

Lowrey slammed a pass into Hester’s hands, 29 yards to the 20. Hassan Jones stepped out of bounds with a throw at the 6. Two plays later Lowrey kept the ball and scored from the 1. Hall added a point, narrowing it to 31-28.

More than 10 minutes remained.

On third down at the 23, English went long again – down the sidelines to a racing Larry Route. He grabbed it for a 60-yard gain to the FSU 17. Route had outdistanced safety Brian McCrary on the fly pattern.

But following a penalty, a pass bounced off Craig Harrison’s hands. McCrary intercepted and ran it to the 22.

Immediately Lowrey threw downfield toward Hester, but the pass came up a bit short and cornerback Gerald Broussard swiped it back for Tulane at the Green Wave 33.

Veals, on the draw again, got away for 18 to FSU’s 45. Tulane maneuvered to a first down at the 22. There the Seminoles stopped two runs and a pass. On fourth down Wood added a 40-yard field goal, making it 34-28 with 3:43 to play.

Lowrey had to scramble from the 20 and ran for 4 yards. Two passes missed.

Fourth down. Exactly three minutes left. Florida State decided to go for it.

The pass failed.

A third-down English pass to the 13 kept the ball in Tulane’s hands, the clock now showing less than a minute to play.

A penalty got the Green Wave to the 5. English was now falling on the ball after each play. Tulane had no intention of running a risk play to score, and the clock soon ran out.

AUBURNed
Campbell, souped-up wishbone boost Auburn over FSU 27-24.

AUBURN, AL – Fourth down and 8 yards to go at Florida State’s 15, scarcely more than two minutes remaining, Auburn trailing 24-20.

Lining up in a wide variation of its normal wishbone alignment following a timeout, Randy Campbell – the quarterback who everyone said could not throw a lick – passes to a wide-open halfback, Lionel James, who scampers happily down the sidelines for an easy touchdown.

That was the difference as Auburn prevailed 27-24 here Saturday in what many in the sellout crowd of 75,625 called one of the best football games they had seen in a long while.

It was, and it was not.

Florida State defenders, who had waged a generally magnificent last-half was, were badly out of position on the decisive play.

“It was a great college football game,” proclaimed Auburn coach Pat Dye, “with a lot of courage and guts displayed on both sides.”

Florida State almost pulled it out even after that crushing last-gasp touchdown by James.

The clock showed 1:59 left when quarterback Kelly Lowrey started moving the Seminoles, on passes, from their 20. It showed 1:11 when Hassan Jones found Weegie Thompson with a 24-yard flanker pass at the Auburn 26.

Four downs to go 26 yards. Plenty of time.

But then linebacker Gregg Carr jumped in front of Thompson as Lowrey threw for an easy first-down interception. The clock showed 50 seconds and it was over.

“We had plenty of chances to win this football game,” said FSU coach Bobby Bowden, a most unhappy fellow.

“Our defense played nearly well enough to win.”

So did the offense. But critical mistakes on both sides of the line at big moments were devastating.

“Yu can’t believe the mixups we had today,” said Bowden.

Still, there were many wondrous moments as the Seminoles played without ace tailback Greg Allen – except for one play when he went in as a decoy on a play that saw Lowrey sneak in for a touchdown that put FSU ahead 24-20 with 6:45 to play.

Florida State, now 2-2, ran up 413 yards on Auburn’s proud defense, 273 of it passing as Lowrey completed 21 of 38. Roosevelt Snipes, in a backup role behind Billy Allen at tailback, ran 11 times for an even 100 yards, but was sidelined late in the third quarter with a separated shoulder.

“Give Auburn credit,” said Bowden. “That was a great drive they had there at the end. They made some big plays when they really needed them.”

Auburn, too, took some uncharacteristic gambles, playing much of the way as though it – not Florida State – were the underdog.

The Tigers came out passing after Bo Jackson returned the game-opening kickoff 41 yards to his 45. For the day Campbell hit 12 of 20 for 152 yards and a stunning three touchdowns.

Consecutive completions on the first two plays from scrimmage took Auburn to FSU’s 22. Three plays later Campbell passed 7 yards to Jeff Parks for a 7-0 lead.

Soon Kim Mack, who played a big game at linebacker for FSU, recovered a Campbell fumble at the Auburn 24. Four plays later fullback Cedric Jones scored on a 5-yard Lowrey pass. That tied it 7-7.

Florida State went up 10-7 on Philip Hall’s 33-yard field goal, capping a splendid drive from the 8 highlighted by a pair of passes to tight end Tom Wheeler that placed the Seminoles in threatening position.

But the game turned early in the second quarter after Snipes stepped out of bounds on an apparent 75-yard scoring run. Snipes had gone 34 yards when he stepped out. That drive was stopped when gifted cornerback David King made a diving end-zone interception of a Lowrey pass.

The Tigers pounded from their 20, led by the running of Jackson, who carried 15 times for 123 yards during the game. Al Del Greco tied it 10-10 with a 45-yard field goal.

Then Auburn grabbed a Hassan Jones fumble at the FSU 29, settling for a 28-yard field goal and a 13-10 lead.

With time running out in the half, Auburn moved on Campbell passes from its 32. Just 10 seconds remained when James caught an 8-yard pass at FSU’s 27.

Disdaining a field goal, Auburn called for a screen pass to fullback Tommy Agee, who somehow managed to elude tackler after tackler as he scooted to a touchdown that put the Tigers up 20-10.

“We were opting just to get a little closer and call a timeout for a field goal,” said Dye. “Ir scared me. I thought he would be stopped about the 1-yard line as time ran out.”

As scary to FSU as the missed tackling was Auburn’s ball control in that second quarter. FSU had it a little more than 4 minutes.

But FSU defenders allowed Auburn only one first down before the offense got a touchdown that cut the lead to 20-17 late in the third quarter. FSU had opened with a drive to Auburn’s 20, but lost yardage and freshman Louis Berry punted to the 3. A bit later Berry punted to the Auburn 7. Auburn could not get out of the latter hole, and the Seminoles moved from their 44. Passes led to the Auburn 21, and penalties helped FSU to the 1 – the last penalty a debatable interference call on King in the end zone. Lowrey scored a touchdown that cut it to 20-17.

“I was bothered by that pass-interference call,” said Dye. “The pass couldn’t be caught. It should have been a no call. It’s not the first call I’ve seen like that in a Florida State game this year. I think the referee follows Florida State around.”

The Seminoles had the ball just twice after that.

The next time they drove 63 yards after holding Auburn on a 4th-and-1 run at the FSU 37. Passes to Jessie Hester sparked the push. One to Thompson got 11 to the 1. Lowrey scored from there – on his second try, after Greg Allen came in. That made it 24-20 with 6:45 to go.

Then Auburn uncorked its payoff drive from its 26. Twice it came to fourth down – and twice Campbell hit the passes he had to complete. The first time was a 4th-and-5 at FSU’s 32, with tight end Ed West catching the throw at the 17.

About a minute later Campbell delivered his heartbreaker to James.

In the end, Auburn had succeeded, if barely, with its ball-control plan, running the ball 74 times to FSU’s 71, holding it for 32:41 of playing time vs. 27:19 for FSU.

Now 3-1, Auburn had just one turnover – and it cost the Tigers a touchdown. The Seminoles had three – two on interceptions – and they cost FSU a football game.

For Bowden, it was the first time since 1978 his Seminoles have lost two straight games on the road.

Pittsburgh 17, Florida State 16

From the Tallahassee Democrat, October 9, 1983, Page 63, by Bill McGrotha.

Patient Pittsburgh pins loss on FSU.

PITTSBURGH, PA - It was a simple lesson in basic football.

If you don't have the ball, you cannot score. And the University of Pittsburgh here Saturday afternoon stubbornly and consistently refused to let FSU have it.

So the Seminoles went down to yet another biting defeat, their third in a row. The score was 17-16. Just as it had at Auburn the week prior, Florida State played very well - and once more it was not enough.

Some among the 52,654 fans in Pitt Stadium on this pleasant, sunny day will declare that the difference was Philip Hall missing an extra point following the Seminoles' first touchdown. It was not the difference.

Pittsburgh's ball-hogs were the difference.

It did not matter that Florida State averaged 5 yards for every offensive snap, to Pitt's 4.6. What mattered was Pitt had the ball nearly 15 more minutes than the Seminoles, 37:26 of playing time to 22:34, and ran 25 more plays, 83 to 58. In all of the last half, FSU had the ball for barely more than 10 minutes. But Pitt controlled it in every quarter.

There at the end, it sort of figured that Florida State's defense would not be able to get the ball back in the final 8:34 - which the Seminoles had to do if they were to win. That defense had been on the field far too long.

"They made the plays they had to make," said FSU coach Bobby Bowden. "We did not."

As Florida State wrapped up a disappointing four-game road trip, it also concluded for the near future a series with powerful Pitt - a team that has won nine national titles over the years, and one also that whipped the Seminoles five of the last six times out.

In the early going, it seemed a Florida State rout might be unfolding. The Seminoles scored the first two times they got the ball and led 13-0.

But Pitt had started out moving the ball on the Seminoles, driving from its 20 to FSU's 21 following the opening kickoff. Eric Schubert missed a 37-yard try for a field goal.

A penalty for too many men on the field was a key in FSU reaching midfield. Tailback Greg Allen - running with no hint of a knee injury (85 yards in 17 carries) - led on to the 29. Then came a most important play. Quarterback Kelly Lowrey caught Pitt in a blitz and threw neatly over the middle to Cedric Jones, who loped to the 2. Two plays later, Lowrey passed to Tom Wheeler for the final yard and a 6-0 lead as Hall missed the point.

That pass on the blitz was significant because it was just about the last time Pitt blitzed all afternoon. The Panthers flat changed their normal defensive strategy.

"They threw something at us on defense totally unexpected," said Bowden. "I've never played a team that seemed to know more about what we were going to do than we did.

"It is the first time I've seen a tiger change his stripes. A blitzing defense has been Pitt's style ever since I've played them.

"This year Pitt had been eating people up with the blitz."

Instead of a pressure defense, Pitt shifted to what coaches call a soft defense - playing a waiting game. Florida State had prepared intensely for Pitt's blitzing tactics.

"We had some things prepared for them today," said Bowden, "that when we broke 'em out, they were sitting there waiting on us."

Still, Florida State moved 73 yards to another touchdown the next time it got the ball, helped along by another 15-yard penalty. A 15-yard Cedric Jones run on a draw and a 17-yard throw to Thompson paved Lowrey's 17-yard TD pass to Thompson.

Then came the turnaround. Incredibly, FSU's offense never mounted another genuine threat until the fourth quarter rolled around and Pitt led 17-13. Except for a brief flurry that led it to the Pitt 46 in the final seconds of the first half, FSU scarcely got beyond its own 30. Mostly, it was three downs and punt.

Too, the ball started bouncing crazily. There was a Pitt fumble that a half-dozen Seminoles seemed to cover inside the Pitt 20 in the second quarter, but the ball squirted away and a big Panther lineman fell on it.

"There must have been four fumbles in the game where if we had got the ball, we would have won the game," said Bowden. "We didn't get a danged one." Except for penalties - seven for 82 yards against Pitt - the game was remarkably free of obvious errors. Neither side lost a fumble. There was a single interception, off Lowrey on the final play of the first half.

After the Seminoles failed to get a handle on that Pitt fumble inside the 20, a 61-yard Pitt punt backed FSU to its 7. When the Seminoles kicked out of that hole, the Panthers promptly drove 55 yards to a touchdown.

The passing of quarterback John Congemi - a Fort Lauderdale boy who hit 20 of his 33 tosses for 202 yards - led quickly to the 10. Two plays later fullback Marc Bailey banged 6 yards up the middle, making it 13-7 at halftime.

First time Pitt got the ball in the third quarter, it moved from its 38 to a 40-yard field goal by Schubert, and it was 13-10.

As Pitt defenders kept FSU backed up, Pitt mounted the decisive drive from its 48. On the first play of the final quarter, Congemi passed 20 yards to tailback Chuck Scales for a 17-13 lead.

Then Florida State moved from its 7 following a mishandled kickoff to the Pitt 33 on a couple of passes to Hassan Jones and the running of Allen. But a penalty slowed the Seminoles. A punt put Pitt at its 3.

FSU defenders granted little, and when Pitt kicked out of that trap, FSU got the ball at Pitt's 48. On a pass over the middle, Jessie Hester was almost loose for a score, but a defender grabbed him by the shirt and stopped him at the 8 following a 40-yard gain. The Seminoles got not another yard. Allen was stopped on a run and two passes missed. On fourth down Hall kicked a 25-yard field goal, cutting the score to 17-16.

The clock showed 8:34 left. FSU figured on getting the ball back. It never did.

One big reason why was Joe McCall, senior tailback from Miami. Time after time the ball went to him, and McCall came through with one clutch run or pass catch after another. His last run gave Pitt a first down at FSU's 3. A play later, time expired.

McCall ran 18 times for 96 yards and caught 8 passes for 62 more.

"This kid hadn't run all year," said Bowden. "He was great out there today."

So was Congemi, the other notable Floridian in FSU's downfall. He was at the wheel as Pitt made good on a phenomenal 13 of 22 third-down plays. By contrast, the Seminoles were successful on just four of 12.

As Lowrey passed 26 times and completed 12 for 168 yards, the Seminoles managed 292 all told. Pitt had 378, including 176 running.

Now 2-3, the Seminoles finally come home Saturday to play Cincinnati.

"When is the apple going to turn?" Bowden asked. "I thought the effort of our players was really good. I think they fought hard all the way.

"I know Pitt had some fine fan support from the stands on that last drive.

"Maybe that's what we need. We've lost three very tough games.

"We are not that far off. Our fans, as we come home, can make a difference."

For cornerback Rocky Kinsey, the season may be over. He received what doctors said was probably a broken collarbone. Later X-rays will tell. There seemed no other significant injuries.

"We played well enough to win," said Lowrey. "But for some reason, we are not doing it.

"Maybe coming off the road will change our luck."

Seminoles slap Cincy 43-17.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Lashing out aggressively, Florida State's football team did some things wrong here Saturday night but did a whole lot right as it whipped Cincinnati 43-17.

Before 55,102 fans - third-largest crowd in Campbell Stadium history - the Seminoles ripped away at will in the final half.

Two tailbacks of Florida State got 246 yards between them. Greg Allen ran for 125 yards in 21 carries, and Roosevelt Snipes got 121 yards in 17. Quarterback Kelly Lowrey completed 11 of his 19 passes for 164 yards.

Cincinnati lost its fine passer, quarterback Troy Bodine, when nose guard Todd Stroud sacked him late in the third quarter. For the third in a year, the right-handed Bodine suffered a broken left arm. He broke it first in junior college last fall, then fractured it again at Cincinnati in the spring.

Now 3-3 for the season, Florida State plays Louisville here in a Thursday night game that will be televised by Turner Broadcasting.

The Seminoles got lucky early.

At the start they elected to go on offense after winning the pregame coin toss, starting at their 35 following the kickoff.

Two Greg Allen runs and a Kelly Lowrey pass for 9 yards to Tom Wheeler put FSU on Cincinnati's 48. Jessie Hester caught a pass at the 30. On a sweep, Allen whammed to the 10. Two plays later Allen ripped to the 1.

Lowrey fumbled as he tried to sneak over the goal line - but the ball rolled on, and tackle Herbert Harp covered it in the end zone for a Florida State touchdown.

Robert Gibbs sailed through to block the point after by Philip Hall, leaving it 6-0.

A late hit on the kickoff return assisted Cincinnati to its 37, and a 13-yard pass reached FSU's 46 on third down. FSU defenders granted nothing else. On fourth down, Shaun Burdick punted short, 23 yards to the 21.

Two Roosevelt Snipes runs got little, and a pass missed. Freshman Louis Berry punted 51 yards to the 29.

Fullback Don Goodman fumbled on a first-down run when hit hard by linebacker Kim Mack, and cornerback Anthony Smiley claimed the ball for FSU at the 28.

Three plays netted nothing. A pass got 5 yards and a run 1, but a screen pass to Cedric Jones lost 6.

On fourth down, Hall kicked a 45-yard field goal to boost the score to 9-0. It was the longest ever for the Tallahassee sophomore.

After two faulty kickoffs - out of bounds, then offsides - walk-on Barry Barco had to boot from his 30. He got the ball down to the Cincinnati 26 with no return. Tackle David Ponder sacked quarterback Troy Bodine on first down for a loss of 7 yards.

On a fourth-down punt, Shaun Burdick got a low snap, bobbled it and could not get the ball off under the hard rush of linebacker Ken Roe. FSU had a shot from the Cincinnati 5.

On third down at the 2, Lowrey kept the ball and slammed into the end zone for the touchdown. Hall's extra-point kick gave FSU a 16-0 lead.

Suddenly Bodine found his magic. A 13-yard throw to Deno Foster was followed by an 18-yard strike to Bill Booze, then a 30-yarder to Jason Stargell at the FSU 5. But Jon Jon Thomas got only a yard on a run up the middle.

On the next play tackle Isaac Williams nailed Reggie Taylor for a loss of 3, back to the 7. A pass was broken up. On fourth down, Mike Morton kicked a 24-yard field goal, making it 16-3.

Moments later, linebacker Linwood Marshall intercepted a Lowrey pass, giving Cincinnati a change at FSU's 28.

Again FSU defenders stopped the Bearcats cold, with linebacker Henry Taylor sacking Bodine on third down. A fourth-and-14 pass failed, and Florida State started from its 32 in the early moments of the second quarter.

But the Seminoles could not move. Berry's punt was a poor one, 21 yards to the Cincinnati 39.

Taylor, the freshman tailback, ran to FSU's 47. A 26-yard pass to Ed McCall soon gained FSU's 16.

After a 5-yard penalty, Goodman ran for 9 then caught a first-down pass at the 6. On a shovel pass over the middle, Goodman scored easily on the next play. Morton kicked a point, and it was 16-10.

From the FSU 38 after the kickoff, Allen sped for 17 but fumbled, and Cincinnati recovered at its 45.

Alphonso Carreker's big third-down rush precipitated a sack of Bodine that blunted that bid. A 50-yard Burdick punt backed FSU to the 7.

Two Allen runs reached the 30. On a third-and-13 play at the 33, Lowrey connected with Tony Johnson on a 47-yard pass to the Cincinnati 20.

Snipes ran to the 11, and Cedric Jones got a first down at the 8.

But a holding call on a play that saw the Seminoles with only 10 players on the field cost 5 yards. Next play Allen fumbled when hit hard by end George Jamison. Safety Brad Nothacker covered it for Cincinnati at the 12.

Once more the defense played big. A punt after three downs gave FSU the ball at its 47 with exactly 1 minute left on the clock.

Johnson snared a 19-yard throw at the 34, and Hassan Jones caught a pair for 17 and 6, getting to the 11.

On a surprise second-down draw, Snipes slipped up the middle and raced into the end zone for an apparent touchdown, but it was nullified by an illegal-procedure call against FSU.

Eleven seconds remained on the clock. Lowrey fired a quick pass to Weegie Thompson in the end zone for a touchdown that came with seven seconds remaining. Hall kicked the extra point, and the Seminoles took a 23-10 lead into the dressing room.

At this point, Florida State had exactly 100 more yards than the visitors, 241 to 141. Cincinnati showed minus-3 for its running game, but the Seminoles had 110 on the ground, with Allen getting 79 yards on a dozen runs.

In the early moments of the third quarter, Bodine passed Cincinnati quickly to FSU's 44. But when he threw deep, he got some pressure from Brian Williams, and cornerback Eric Riley intercepted it at the 3. A short pass to Hassan Jones and a 14-yard run by Cedric Jones soon had FSU at its 28.

But linebacker Jerome Brinson stepped in front of a Lowrey pass, and the interception gave Cincinnati a chance from FSU's 35.

On third down, Clifton Pendkergrast pulled in a 13-yard Bodine toss at the 15.

It came to third down at the 20 after Roe and Carreker led a sack of Bodine. The quarterback dropped back and coolly whipped a pass over the middle to Foster for the touchdown. Morton's point narrowed FSU's lead to 23-17.

A 26-yard pass to Johnson lifted FSU to its 46. With Cedric Jones running for 11 then 10 yards, the Seminoles soon had a first down at the Bearcat 31. Third down at the 28 saw Allen loose on a run to a first down at the 16.

After Allen got 5 more, Snipes swept to the 3 then scored on a strong run off the right side. Hall kicked a point to make it 30-17.

With Cincinnati back to punt, FSU was offsides. The penalty made it fourth-and-one at the Bearcat 29. The snap went to Duane Stacklin - normally a linebacker - who ran for the first down at the 37.

Bodine was badly shaken when nose guard Todd Stroud sacked him for a loss of 6, and the quarterback went off the field to heavy applause from the stands.

Two plays later a punt was hauled in by Cedric Jones and run back 22 yards to the Cincinnati 46. Snipes slashed to the 33 just before the quarter ran out.

Seven more runs in sequence brought a touchdown, with Allen carrying on the first two of those and the last three. He got the touchdown on a pitchout from the 5. Hall's kick gave FSU big breathing room at 37-17.

With Bodine sidelined, Mike Willging moved in at quarterback. A pass to Stargell ignited a drive to the 50. On fourth-and-four, a pass to McCall attained FSU's 38. A handful of plays later, Cincinnati had a first down at the 13 on the heels of two relatively short completions.

Under heavy pressure, Willging threw four straight incomplete. Steve Bloodworth, a surprise starter at cornerback, broke up the last throw when it likely would have gone for a touchdown.

Bob Davis took over for Lowrey at quarterback with 7:08 to go. Three straight handoffs to Snipes took the ball to FSU's 43. Three plays later, Snipes got the ball again. This time he ran 17 yards to the 36. With 3:52 left, Davis completed his first varsity pass - 29 yards to Jessie Hester for a touchdown. Hall's point was blocked, leaving it 43-17.

Running from a hole at its 14 following the kickoff, Cincinnati nursed the ball to the 40. A 21-yard pass to Foster had the Bearcats knocking at FSU's 32. Three more passes took the visitors to the 11.

But Willging fumbled when Stroud hit him, and Garth Jax recovered for FSU. Eric Thomas moved in for one snap at quarterback before time ran out.

Florida State slugs Louisville.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Looking a little like a football team it had hoped it might be, Florida State made things go its way all night and romped past Louisville 51-7 Thursday.

Rolling up 545 yards of offense - 336 of it on the ground - the Seminoles lost no fumbles and had no passes intercepted in playing what Coach Bobby Bowden called their best game of the season.

And FSU defenders, so often hard-pressed this season, limited Louisville to 194 yards - just 49 of it passing.

It was a happy night for Bowden, who checked in as Florida State's winningest coach of all time. His record for seven-plus seasons is now 63-25, and that victory total exceeds Bill Peterson's. In 11 Seminole seasons the Peterson record was 62-42-11.

"We are playing a lot of kids," said Bowden, "and tonight we were just able to wear Louisville down. We just had too much for the down here.

"Our defense is getting better and better. They are playing all 60 minutes with more intensity."

Dean May, the fine senior quarterback of Louisville, went out early in the second quarter with a broken shoulder, but his absence hardly was an overwhelming factor.

"But we lost any chance we had when Dean went down," said Louisville Coach Bob Weber. "You don't like to see your team go flat when one guy goes down, but it happened. We just couldn't move the football, and that was the end of it."

Louisville had not been that impressive moving the ball with May playing, and Florida State controlled it in this game, 85 plays to 50. In the first half, the visitors had the ball of just 22 plays.

"We got whipped on the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively," Weber said.

Tackle Alphonso Carreker had a big Seminole night on defense and was hailed as the player of the game by Turner Broadcasting, which televised the game nationally. Among other things, Carreker intimidated Louisville by blocking a field goal attempt and repeatedly bothering the quarterback.

A crowd of 42,117 fans - about what was expected - turned out on the fair, warm evening.

For the second successive game, tailbacks Greg Allen and Roosevelt Snipes churned for more than 100 yards apiece. Allen got 148 yards in 20 runs, scoring three touchdowns; Snipes, 109 in 17, scoring once.

"Those tailbacks will make you look bad," said Weber.

Kelly Lowrey quarterbacked only the first half for FSU, retiring with a slightly sprained ankle and a 28-0 lead. Bob Davis came on at the position, then Eric Thomas, and finally Kirk Coker. Lowrey completed nine of 17 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. Davis hit on five of nine throws for 49 yards and a touchdown. Thomas completed the only pass he threw for 27 yards.

"We've got it together now," said Carreker. "I think the fact that we are playing a lot more people is mainly responsible. Everybody has a lot more confidence."

With a difficult closing schedule, starting at Arizona State a week from Saturday, the Seminoles figure to need all the improvement they can muster.

Winning their fifth straight game on national or regional TV, Florida State struck for its first touchdown the first time it got the ball.

Lowrey directed a 78-yard drive with Allen scoring from 23 yards out on a pitchout.

It stayed 7-0 until Florida State exploded for 21 points in the second quarter.

Allen swept into the end zone from the 9 to cap a 60-yard push.

A bit later, Lowrey unleashed a 45-yard bomb that Jessie Hester snared in the end zone. Lowrey heaved that one at least 60 yards in the air.

In the final moments of the half, Snipes scored from the 2, polishing off a quick 80-yard drive. The key was a 52-yard penalty - interference by free safety Kirk Perry on Hester as he streaked for another Lowrey bomb. That penalty gave FSU a shot from the Louisville 5.

Taking a stiff forearm to the face from Perry on the play, Hester sat out the last half with whiplash, but early word was that the injury was not all that serious.

A 34-yard field goal by Philip Hall padded the score to 31-0 in the early moments of the third quarter.

The next time FSU got the ball in that half, Davis guided a 62-yard scoring drive. Snipes was the key in setting up a 7-yard touchdown pass, Davis to tight end Pete Panton.

A fourth-quarter touchdown came on another pitchout to Allen and an 18-yard scamper. That topped a 58-yard drive.

The score jumped to 51-0 when Billy Allen scored from the 3. A 27-yard pass on fourth down, Thomas to Tony Johnson, paved that one.

Louisville got a touchdown with a minute left on the strong running of Lamar Cummings, who went into the end zone from 6 yards out. Cummings ran only six times but netted 58 yards. Teammate Willie Shelby got 73 on 14 runs.

Florida State averaged a whopping 6.4 yards per play with its attack, and punted only once all evening - freshman Louis Berry booting that one 45 yards.

Hester finished with three receptions for the night, netting 65 yards. Snipes also caught three for 37 as nine different receivers caught balls for the Seminoles.

Bowden was looking forward to a little extra time to prepare for Arizona State.

"We'll need it," he said. "The biggest plus is that we have a better chance to get over some of our nagging injuries. The preparation time won't help all that much.

"We've had some great effort from our players the last two weeks."

Florida State 29, Arizona State 26

From the Tallahassee Democrat, October 30, 1983, page 53, by Bill McGrotha.

'Noles singe Sun Devils.
FSU pulls out red-hot game with last-second touchdown.

TEMPE, AZ - Dropping back into the shotgun formation, Bob Davis shot Arizona State down with six seconds left here Saturday night.

The score - in one of the most stirring football games that Sun Devil Stadium has ever seen - was 29-26 after Jessie Hester pulled in the Davis pass, falling in the end zone on a 10-yard play.

Playing in relief of Kelly Lowrey, who departed early in the fourth quarter with a knee injury, quarterback Davis directed two remarkable scoring drives in lightning manner.

The Seminoles won their third straight game, lifted their record to 5-3 and became the first non-conference opponent to beat Arizona State at home in the four years of Darryl Rogers' coaching. The Sun Devils, who only 10 days ago were the favorite to be the host team in the Rose Bowl, are now 4-2-1.

Lowrey was hurt when Florida State was nursing a 14-13 lead. Immediately after he left, Florida State punted and the home team drove 72 yards to a touchdown and a 19-14 lead.

In came Davis, a tall junior from Warner Robins, Ga. In five plays, the Seminoles had knocked off 82 yards for the lead again as Roosevelt Snipes skipped 38 yards to a touchdown on a pass from Davis. Then Davis passed to Weegie Thompson for a pair of extra points that put FSU up 22-19.

With 5:08 left, Arizona State took the lead again 26-22 on a 35-yard pass from quarterback Todd Hons to Doug Allen.

It seemed over for Florida State when Snipes lost a fumble at the Sun Devil 42 with 2:56 remaining. But the defense - led all night by tough tackle Alphonso Carreker - checked the Sun Devils and forced a punt with 1:36 to go.

There were 82 yards standing between the Seminoles and victory. And Florida State had no time-outs left.

But 10 careful plays did it.

The key play came on fourth down at the FSU 23, with Davis calmly passing to Tommy Wheeler for a first down at the 39. The clock showed only 41 seconds.

Wheeler caught two more big passes in the drive, the last a 20-yarder to the 10 with the clock running.

Arizona State called a time-out, giving Florida State time to plot its strategy after a Davis incompletion stopped the clock with 11 seconds to go.

Then Davis made his big throw, and Hester made his big catch.

During his stint, Davis hit on eight of 12 passes for 140 yards. Lowrey had connected on 11 of 22 for 124 yards before his departure. Wheeler pulled in five for 72 yards.

It was an erratic night for running: Allen knocked off 82 yards in 18 carries. Florida State played a five-back defense, inviting Arizona State to run if it could - and it did run some. A reserve back named Mike Crawford got 111 yards in 29 carries, a career high for him.

"I couldn't have asked for a better demonstration from anybody," said Bobby Bowden, a most happy Florida State coach. "I didn't say anything to Bob before he went in there at quarterback.

"The credit here goes entirely to Mike Kruczek, who coaches our quarterbacks, and to Bob himself. I didn't do anything to win this game."

The Seminoles barely controlled the football in this one. They had 77 plays for 482 yards; Arizona State had 72 for 365.

Among Florida State's defensive heroes - in addition to Carreker - was Ken Roe, a very active linebacker.

Scouts from five bowls - Fiesta, Bluebonnet, Sun, Holiday, Citrus - were on hand for this one, but Bowden said it was much too early for his Seminoles to be thinking about postseason play.

A crowd of 69,986 booed the home team at times, but Arizona State got cranked up in the last half and provided a characteristic offensive show.

The temperature was 80 degrees and there was no wind at the start of the game, and Florida State got the first turn with the football after winning the coin toss.

From the 20 after the kickoff, Greg Allen ran for 4, caught a pass for 8, ran for 13 and 2 - up to the 47.

Short passes to Hester and Wheeler reached the Arizona State 35, but a procedure penalty cost the Seminoles 5 yards.

On third down, Hester sped for 13 on a reverse to the 24. On the next play, Lowrey kept on the option for 17 to the 7.

Allen smashed to the 2, but two more Allen plunges ended a foot short. On fourth down, Lowrey seemed to be stopped short on his sneak, but fullback Cletis Jones gave him a push into the end zone for the touchdown. Philip Hall booted a point for 7-0.

From its 20, Arizona State got just a yard on a run as quarterback Todd Hons twice passed incomplete.

Under a hard rush and partial deflection by cornerback Eric Riley, punter Jim Meyer got off a boot to FSU's 41.

But a fumble that Lowrey covered for a 1-yard loss got the Seminoles off to a faulty start. Soon freshman Louis Berry punted nicely to the Arizona State 18.

Mike Crawford, running at tailback for the ailing Darryl Clark, ran to the 31 on two carries. Then a holding call knocked the home team back to its 20.

Under heavy pressure from tackle Alphonso Carreker, quarterback Hons retreated and finally was pushed out of bounds by linebacker Henry Taylor for a loss of 13 back to the 7. A fourth-down punt gave Florida State good field position at the Sun Devils 48.

A screen pass to Allen lost 6, but on third down Tony Johnson snared a 28-yard Lowrey pass at the 27.

Two plays got only a yard. Lining up in the shotgun, Lowrey got blitzed on third down by linebacker Billy Robinson for a loss of 10. Berry punted into the end zone.

Big fullback Dwaine Wright ran twice and got 30, but he fumbled on the second carry, and Pat Milligan recovered for Florida State.

But safety Dale Walton intercepted Lowrey's first-down shot in the end zone and wheeled the ball up to the 30. A piling-on penalty called on Ricky Render sent Arizona State to its 45.

The Sun Devils could do little on runs, however. On the third play of the second quarter, a punt placed Florida State at its 9.

With Allen sweeping for 10 and Cedric Jones bursting for 17, Florida State soon got to its 38. On a pitchout, Allen sailed for 18 to the Sun Devil 44. A short pass to Johnson and a Cedric Jones run gained a first down at the 32. After Allen twice was nailed on runs, Weegie Thompson caught a first-down pass at the 22.

Trying to pitch out, Lowrey fumbled when hit by safety David Fulcher, and Robinson claimed the for Arizona State at the 33.

A Hons bomb narrowly missed its target. Two runs didn't get enough.

But the punt was a fake. Wright took a direct snap and ran for 7 yards to a first down at the Arizona State 46.

A pass to Paul Day following a delay penalty against the Sun Devils attained the FSU 43. Crawford ran for 5.

On a pitchout, Crawford went the distance, but he had stepped out of bounds at the 24 after a gain of 14. Three more runs reached the 14.

On second down, Crawford took a handoff as Hons slipped wide. Then Crawford passed to the wide-open quarterback, who skipped to the 1 before being stopped.

On second down, Mike Cade raced wide to score. Luis Zendejas kicked the point that tied it 7-7.

The clock showed 1:14 left in the half.

On the kickoff, Roosevelt Snipes gathered it in for a 29-yard runback to the Seminole 42.

Thompson caught a pass at the Arizona State 46.

But that was it. Two more passes failed. Cedric Jones lost 4 on a reverse as time ran out in the half.

At this point, Florida State had run up 165 yards, Arizona State just 106. Allen had 58 yards on 13 runs. Lowrey had completed eight of 16 passes for 76 yards. Hons had thrown just six times, completing three for 23. Florida State was controlling the football, 41 plays to 28.

Primarily, the Seminoles were playing a nickel defense, employing five defensive backs; Pat Milligan was the fifth.

Starting at its 20 in the third quarter, Arizona State continued to find the going rough. Two runs got just 4 yards, then tackle David Ponder sacked Hons for a loss of 12 back to the 12.

Following a 56-yard Jim Meyer punt, the Seminoles began at their 38.

But Arizona State's swarming defense kept the Seminoles off their timing. Allen lost a yard. Lowrey missed with a pair of passes. Berry punted to the 28.

Don Kerns grabbed an 18-yard pass at the 48. Jerome Weatherspoon soon pulled in a Hons throw for 19 yards to the 29 of the Seminoles. Carreker led a stout stand that brought a fourth down at the 22.

Zendejas kicked a 39-yard field goal that put the Sun Devils in front 10-7.

Rambling with a pitchout, Snipes got 18 to the FSU 38. The running of Lowrey and Snipes led to the 50. Hassan Jones hauled in a first-down pass at the Arizona State 37.

Weegie Thompson took a pass and picked up 25 to the 12. Two plays later, Snipes sailed right up the middle into the teeth of a blitz and scored easily from 12 yards out. Hall added a point, and FSU led again 14-10.

On third down, with Arizona State breathing hard at its 24, Hons' deep pass was intercepted by Eric Riley and returned across midfield - but the play was nullified by an interference call against the Seminoles. The infraction was called away from the play, and Arizona State was presented with a first down at its 37.

A 12-yard pass to Kerr and the running of Crawford led to a first down at FSU's 46.

With Hans continuing to feed the ball to Crawford, Arizona State chopped steadily with its running game. Eight plays later it came to a first down at FSU's 9 as the third quarter ended.

Crawford cracked to the 7. Trying to go wide, Crawford was nabbed at the 6 by Milligan on a big defensive play. A Hons pass was futile.

On fourth down, Zendejas kicked a 24-yard field goal, narrowing it to 14-13.

A 15-yard pass to Hester keyed a Florida State push to its 42.

Then on third down, Lowrey was hurt as he was sacked for a loss of 5 by Robinson. With a hurt knee, the quarterback was helped off the field to the cheers of the crowd.

Berry punted to the 30.

A 15-yard pass to Day lifted the Sun Devils to their 49.

Two plays netted just 2 yards.

But on third down, Hons passed to Crawford into apparent busted coverage, and the tailback slipped free down the sidelines for a touchdown on a 49-yard play.

After a time-out, Arizona State went for two points. Carreker batted down Hons' pass. The score stood 19-14 with 10:11 left.

With Lowrey nursing a battered left knee, Bob Davis came on as FSU quarterback.

From the 18 after the kickoff, Allen popped for 8. On third down, Davis passed to Wheeler at the 41.

Suddenly, Cletis Jones burst up the middle on a 35-yard scamper to the 13, but a clipping call on Hassan Jones moved the ball back to the Arizona State 38.

Snipes promptly took a short pass from Davis and got loose wide on a 38-yard scoring play.

Going for two points, the Seminoles got them on a Davis pass to Thompson, making it 22-19 with 8:03 remaining.

Once more a third-down pass ripped the Seminoles. This time Arizona State seemed stopped at its 34, but Hons found Doug Allen with a 19-yard toss to FSU's 47.

A pass to Day keyed a first down at the 35. But it came to third down there.

Once again, Florida State was bludgeoned with a Hons pass over the middle to Allen - 35 yards and a touchdown. After a point-after kick, the home team led 26-22 with 5:08 left.

From the 17, Allen got 9. After a short Cedric Jones run, Thompson caught a pass at the 43.

It ended at the Arizona State 42 when Snipes fumbled on a third-and-six run, Fred Gaddis recovering for the Sun Devils.

Florida State defenders held. After three downs, Arizona State was at its 41. The clock showed 1:38 left as Florida State called a time-out. The Seminoles tried to block Meyer's punt but didn't come close enough, and the boot went 41 yards to the 18.

Davis had to run and gained 5. After two passes missed, Davis found Wheeler on fourth down at the 39. Then he hit Wheeler again for 11 at the 50 with 34 seconds left. The clock showed 28 seconds left as Hassan Jones stepped out of bounds with a pass at the 30.

With the clock running, Wheeler got to the 10 on a pass up the middle. An incomplete pass stopped the clock with 11 seconds to go. Arizona State called a time-out.

From the shotgun, Davis fired to a falling Jessie Hester in the end zone for the touchdown with 6 seconds to go.

Hall added the point, and that did it. It was 29-26 FSU.

From the Tallahassee Democrat, November 6, 1983, page 63, by Bill McGrotha.

FSU explodes in 2nd half.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Offensively shaky in the early going, Florida State struck for four touchdowns in rapid second-half succession and came from behind to knock off a battling South Carolina football team 45-30 Saturday night.

It was 17-17 at halftime, but it was 24-17 in favor of the Gamecocks soon after.

South Carolina took advantage of two down-deep Greg Allen fumbles and one interception off Bob Davis and cashed in for quick touchdowns after each of those turnovers. The first two brought the visitors from a 10-0 deficit to a 14-10 lead, and the last one provided that early last-half lead.

Defensively, the Seminoles had some good moments – and bad – but in the end Florida State, with a 6-3 record, had assured itself a winning season with just two games left, Miami and Florida.

At the start, South Carolina moved briskly with its running game from the 29 following the game-opening kickoff.

Two Thomas Dendy carries got 10. After a 5-yard penalty, Allen Mitchell got 9 on a pass to Eric Poole.

Fullback Kent Hagood suddenly popped up the middle 26 yards to FSU’s 28. But another run got nothing, and neither did two passes.

On fourth down, a 45-yard try for a field goal by Mark Fleetwood was low.

Three runs by Greg Allen led to a first down at the 50, but an errant Bob Davis pitchout on first down resulted in a 3-yard loss, and the Seminoles could not recover.

Under heavy pressure, Louis Berry got off a nifty punt – 45 yards to the 5.

A pair of Dendy runs nursed the ball out to the 11. Blitzed as he tried to throw, Mitchell got off a pass that fell harmlessly to the ground.

When Chris Norman punted, linebacker Ken Roe came ripping up the middle to block it, and cornerback Eric Riley covered the ball in the end zone for a Florida State touchdown. Philip Hall’s point provided a 7-0 lead.

From the 20, Dendy was nailed for a loss of 3 by safety Brian McCrary, and two more plays got nowhere. Norman’s 42-yard punt left FSU at its 41.

On a pitchout, Roosevelt Snipes slipped away for 15 to the South Carolina 44. A Davis keeper led to a first down at the 33. Snipes got 8 and Davis 5 to the 20. Three more runs reached the 13. On fourth down Hall entered to kick a 30-yard field goal, making it 10-0.

On second down at its 25 following a time-out, South Carolina worked a halfback pass – Quinton Lewis to Poole – for 20 yards as the first quarter ended.

Early in the second quarter, South Carolina missed a try for three points when Fleetwood’s 40-yard field-goal attempt hit the crossbar.

But on first down, Davis threw into a crowd, and James Seawright intercepted for South Carolina at FSU’s 30.

On a quick handoff, Lewis shot 30 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Fleetwood’s point cut FSU’s lead to 10-7.

Snipes wheeled 53 yards with the kickoff to South Carolina’s 46.

But Greg Allen fumbled on first down, and Gary Ryan recovered for the Gamecocks at their 49.

On successive keepers, Mitchell got 3, 15 and 5 to FSU’s 28.

Berry raced for 20 to the 7, then scored on a following run. A Fleetwood kick following the touchdown gave South Carolina a 14-10 lead.

From the FSU 20, Snipes gained the 30 in two carries. A pass to Hester attained FSU’s 43. But a penalty and a pair of incompletions stymied the Seminoles. Berry punted to the 6, and the Gamecocks got good field position at their 20 following a 14-yard runback.

A 12-yard pass to Dominique Blasingame and a 14-yard scamper by Berry quickly got the visitors to their 48. But Mitchell missed with two passes, and a third came up short of the first down. FSU started at its 19 after a punt with 5:29 left in the half.

Two Davis keepers were instrumental in first downs at the 31 and then at South Carolina’s 43.

Abruptly, Davis threw long – 40 yards to Weegie Thompson, who went out of bounds at the 3.

Cletis Jones scored on third down from the 2. Hall’s point provided FSU with the lead again 17-14 with 1:30 to go in the half.

An 18-yard pass to Chris Wade gained South Carolina’s 47. With eight seconds showing on the clock, Mitchell hit Dendy with a screen pass up the middle for 28 yards to Florida State’s 30.

In came Fleetwood, kicking a 47-yard field goal that tied it 17-17 with three seconds left in the half.

There was time for Snipes to run a kickoff barely out of the end zone, but that was all.

At this point, Florida State trailed South Carolina in offense by a surprising 110 yards, 279 to 169. The Seminoles had 116 running and a mere 55 passing.

The Gamecocks had run up 164 on the ground and 115 in the air. Davis had thrown only five time, completing two, while the Gamecocks had hit on nine of 16 passes – including two by halfback Lewis.

At their 18 after the second-half kickoff, the Seminoles got into immediate trouble.

On the first play, Allen fumbled a pitchout, and Tony Guton covered the ball for South Carolina at the 15.

Pressured, Mitchell threw incomplete. But on second down he found Bradshaw wide open and hit him with an easy pass as he crossed the goal line for the touchdown. A point kick put the Gamecocks up 24-17.

Snipes was nailed at the 11 on the following kickoff return.

On second down, Snipes scampered for 24 to the 35. Running again, he got just 3, but a personal-foul penalty moved FSU to the Gamecock 47.

On third down at the 40 and needing 3 yards, Davis passed for 35 to Greg Allen at the 5. It came to third down at the 2, Davis carrying – and then fumbling into the end zone. Allen recovered for a Florida State touchdown, and Hall’s kick tied it 24-24.

On the first play from his 29, Mitchell passed for 10.

On the next play Mitchell whipped the ball to Dendy on the option, and he sped wide 47 yards to FSU’s 13. Two Hagood runs led to a first down at the 3.

An offsides call knocked South Carolina back to the 8, and a run got 2. Then Mitchell fumbled, Carreker seemed to recover for the Seminoles, but it was ruled South Carolina’s ball at the 6.

On fourth down Fleetwood tried a field goal from 23 yards. Riley tore through to block it, and FSU took over at the 14.

A 15-yard pass to Hester helped gain the 36, and Allen runs led to the Carolina 46. A 28-yard pass to Tony Johnson reached the 18.

On second down, Davis smartly executed a last-split-second pitchout to Snipes, who scored easily from 18 out. Hall’s point put FSU back on top 31-24.

The Pat Milligan came up with an interception of Mitchell’s first-down pass, presenting FSU with a chance at the Gamecock 22 after an 11-yard runback.

With a pitchout, Allen sailed to the 6, and then Cletis Jones slammed to the 3. But it came to third down at the 8 following a delay penalty. On a screen pass from Davis, Snipes just reached the end zone for the touchdown. A point kick had FSU ahead 28-24 in the final minute of the quarter.

Florida State forced a punt from South Carolina’s 32 but had too many men on the field, and the 15-yard penalty took the visitors to midfield.

A 16-yard pass to Wade gained FSU’s 34, but it came to fourth-and-two at FSU’s 26. Dendy hit the middle, met Carraker and got stopped short at the 25. FSU took over.

Third down at the 23 saw Hester loose on the reverse for 15 to the 38. And on third down again, Snipes got 12 to the Carolina 46 on a screen pass.

It came to fourth-and-one at the 37. By a hair, Davis got the first down at the 36 with about eight minutes remaining.

Davis promptly threw to Thompson in the end zone for a touchdown on a 36-yard play. Hall’s point brought the score to 45-24.

A face-mask penalty helped South Carolina to its 45. A 20-yard pass to Blasingame attained the FSU 38. On a keeper, Mitchell swept to the 22.

Then Mitchell hit Wade in the end zone for the touchdown with 5:06 left. A try for two points failed, leaving it 45-30.

Eric Thomas came in at quarterback for FSU.

Allen, reversing his field when he found no hole to his left, swept 23 yards up to his 46. Four more runs, including a 12-yarder by Snipes, brought a first down at the Gamecocks 32. On fourth down at the 25, Thomas threw his first pass – 12 yards to Hester at the 13. A penalty moved the Seminoles to the 7. Thomas kept twice, gaining 4 yards and losing 2, as the game ended.

’Canes escape 17-16.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Forty-seven yards. Seven plays. Two minutes and 12 seconds.

For Florida State, that was a sad summary of an excruciating end as Jeff Davis kicked a chip-shot 19-yard field goal on the game’s last play to lift Miami to a 17-16 victory here Saturday night.

The kick booted the 10-1 Hurricanes into the Orange Bowl and left the Seminoles’ bowl prospects uncertain, their record 6-4 with a Dec. 3 game with Florida still left.

In the final minutes, Miami’s heralded defense pushed Florida State back from its 30 to 10. Florida State punted out of trouble one time, with the defense holding.

But behind gifted freshman quarterback Bernie Kosar, the Hurricanes moved with determination on their last opportunity after getting the ball at midfield following a punt.

Behind 7-0 early, the Seminoles rallied to lead 16-7 in the thirds quarter. The Kosar went to work.

In the preliminaries, Florida State won the coin toss and chose to receive at the start of the last half.

Darryl Oliver wheeled 29 yards with the kickoff, up to the Miami 38. Bernie Kosar promptly passed to tight end Glenn Dennison, 17 yards to the FSU 45. After Al Bentley hammered for 6, Ed Brown caught a pass at the 20.

Kosar’s next pass gained just 1 yard, and another fell incomplete. But on third down, interference was called against Florida State – apparently on safety Pat Milligan – at the goal line. Miami had a first down at the 1.

Bentley hit off the left side for the touchdown. Jeff Davis kicked a point for 7-0.

Roosevelt Snipes made a poor decision to return the kickoff out of the end zone and was nailed at the 6.

In two runs Greg Allen came up inches short of the first down, and quarterback Bob Davis, on a keeper, got it at the 18. Next play, as Allen ran, a clipping call against Jessie Hester knocked the Seminoles back to the 10. After an Allen run to the 18, Louis Berry got off a 52-yard punt that left Miami at its 30.

Bentley got nothing on a run. Trying to pass, Kosar had to scramble and ran wide for 6. On a short pass, Bentley tore loose from tacklers for a first down at the 43. Soon Brown got 21 to FSU’s 36 on a Kosar throw. Keith Griffin slipped wide on a run to the 29. But on third down, Brian McCrary intercepted Kosar’s pass at the FSU 1.

After Snipes struggled to the 8 on two runs, Davis kept to the 15 for the first down. Wheeler caught a short pass at the 23, but it came to fourth down there. As Berry punted, Ron Harris was blocked into him, and the 5-yard penalty gave FSU a first down at the 28. A confusing sequence of penalties left FSU with first-and-25 at its 30. Hassan Jones came up short on a third-down pass of 20 yards over the middle.

When Berry punted, Ed Brown unaccountably called for a fair catch at the Miami 3.

Passing from the end zone, Kosar found Stanley Shakespeare open at about his 38, but the receiver could not hang on. Bentley got to the 5 on a run. Another pass missed.

When Rick Tuten punted, tackle David Ponder tore through to block it. The ball bounced out of the end zone for a safety, narrowing Miami’s lead 7-2.

Snipes returned the free-kick punt 25 yards to put FSU in position at its 47. But on three straight passes Davis could not connect. On the punt, Brown got 19 on a runback to the 31.

Short completions to Shakespeare and Bentley carried Miami to FSU’s 47. On third down Kosar hit Brown with a toss at the 30. With cornerback Eric Riley outstanding on defense, Kosar threw three incompletions.

A 46-yard try for a field goal by Miami’s Davis in the early moments of the second quarter was short.

On a Bob Davis pass, Greg Allen picked up 15. After a holding penalty, Hassan Jones caught a 21-yarder, paving a first down at Miami’s 33. Three chopping runs attained the 22. Cletis Jones popped up the middle for 9, then got a first down at the 12. Allen slashed to the 6. Jones banged to the 3. From there, Allen scored on a pitchout. Philip Hall added a point, and FSU led 9-7.

Pinned at its 15 after the kickoff, Miami maneuvered to its 16 on three straight runs. A short pass to Dennison and a pitch to Griffin reached the 42. Linebacker Prince Matt soon sacked Kosar for a loss of 7, but on third down the quarterback quickly fired 27 yards to Brown for a first down at FSU’s 35.

But Griffin lost a yard trying to run. A pass missed. Then Ponder sacked Kosar for Minus-12 at the 47. A punt left Florida State at its 9 with 1:52 remaining in the half.

Cletis Jones dug for 5. Miami called time-out. Snipes whipped up the middle 10 yards to the 24. Two more runs got 6 as Miami used another time-out as the clock showed 24 seconds. On a surprise draw, Snipes slipped up the middle to Miami’s 33 with 16 seconds left. With a pass, Weegie Thompson struggled out of bounds at the 28. Six seconds to go.

Davis, down to hold a 45-yard try for a field goal, got a bad snap and was fortunate to get the ball in place. Hall’s effort was short, but Miami was offsides.

Five yards closer, Hall missed again. Once more the snap was slightly high.

At this point, Florida State had outgained Miami, 207 to 166. FSU’s total included 26 runs for 133 yards. Kosar had hit 10 of 20 passes for 135, Davis six of 12 for 74. On nine carries, Snipes had picked up 63 yards.

FSU opened the third quarter with Cletis Jones popping for 6 from his 20. On third down, as Allen caught a short pass at the 31, the Seminoles drew a big penalty for pass interference and were set back on their 13. Miami got position at its 37 following Berry’s booming punt.

Bentley got 5. Then Griffin broke away on a run, 20 yards to FSU’s 37. On another run, Griffin lost 4. A screen pass to Bentley gained the 31. Brown caught a first-down pass at the 24. On third down, Brown grabbed still another key pass at the 13. Griffin got a yard going wide. A covey of Seminoles, apparently led by Milligan, sacked Kosar at the 24. On third down, the quarterback threw incomplete in the end zone.

Fourth down and a 41-yard shot at a field goal by Davis was wide.

On a cutback, Allen soon got 13 to the 41. He fumbled but covered the ball. After a motion penalty cost the Seminoles 5, Hassan Jones snared a 20-yard Davis throw at Miami’s 36.

Stopped cold on one run, Allen got 12 on the next to the 23. On a fake reverse, Snipes soon got 10 to the 10. Snipes went wide to the 5. On the next run, Snipes seemed to be in, but an official ruled him down a foot from the goal.

With second effort, and maybe a push from an unidentified teammate, Davis got in on a sneak. Hall added a point, and it was 16-7.

With the kickoff, Reggie Sutton wheeled 31 yards to his 36.

Three short plays reached the 48. Then Brown collared a 13-yarder at FSU’s 39.

On third-and-eight, Kosar fired over the middle to Brown, who slipped away from cornerback Steve Bloodworth and scored on a 37-yard play. Davis kicked a Miami point, cutting the score to 16-14.

Cletis Jones whacked from his 20 to the 23 as the third quarter ran out.

Snipes caught an 8-yarder at the 31. Two additional short passes left FSU a foot short of the first down.

On a fourth-down gamble, Davis sneaked to the 43 for the first down. Snipes soon caught a 10-yard pass then ran wide for 4to the Miami 40. On two runs, Cletis Jones netted nothing. A pass missed.

Hall was short with a 47-yard attempt for a field goal.

Bentley was stopped cold, then lost 11 as Milligan socked him as he caught a safety-valve pass. A pass to Shakespeare reached the 33 before Miami punted to FSU’s 30 with 8:22 remaining.

On a pitch, Snipes lost 4. Then Hester, on a reverse, lost 26 to the 10 as Miami defenders swarmed the play. Snipes dropped a Davis pass at the 30. Berry’s punt placed Miami at Florida State’s 45.

Ponder and Brad Fojtik sacked Kosar for minus-10 at Miami’s 45. Griffin caught a pass, but he was out of bounds. Then McCrary broke up Kosar’s deep throw. Miami punted to FSU’s 13 with 5:23 to go.

Affer Allen lost 2, Davis passed to Hester for the first down at the 24. On the next two plays, Allen lost 3 then got it back. Hassan Jones was short as he pulled in a pass at the 32.

FSU was forced to punt, and Brown’s 15-yard return gave Miami a shot from FSU’s 49.

Successive 10-yard passes to Shakespeare attained FSU’s 29. On a run, Griffin hit inside, then swung wide – 20 yards to the 9.

Griffin ran twice more, to the 5, and Miami called a time-out with 5 seconds left. Bentley cracked to the 2. Fourth down, and Miami let the clock wind down to three seconds before calling a final time-out.

On the game’s last play, Davis kicked a 19-yarder.

That won it 17-16.

Florida 53, Florida State 14

From the Tallahassee Democrat, December 4, 1983, page 65, By Bill McGrotha.

Pellverized.
Gators chewed ‘em up and spit ‘em out.

GAINESVILLE, FL – There was not any way.

“They beat the hell out of us,” said Jack Stanton, defensive coordinator of Florida State. “It was a combination of everything, looked like.”

Exactly. And Florida’s shocking 53-14 devastation of Florida State in a football game here Saturday afternoon was a totally accurate reflection of what was what.

In perhaps the Gators’ easiest victory of an 8-2-1 season, the Seminoles were dealt their worst loss in this 26-game rivalry since a winless Florida State team fell 49-0 here 10 years ago.

While the Gators happily await a Dec. 30 date to play Iowa in the Gator Bowl, FSU will take a 6-5 record to Atlanta to play North Carolina in the Peach Bowl on the same date.

“We’re still pleased with our game,” said Art Gregory of the Peach Bowl, his face a blank. “This was the only bad game Florida State played all year.

What a time for the worst of FSU efforts. Millions were watching on CBS television, not to mention the record assembly of 74,113 at Florida Field on this warm, overcast day.

“Gentlemen, this was one of the great victories,” said Florida Coach Charley Pell. “It was surprising. It was a game of big plays early.

“It was just one of those weird things, and I’m mighty glad it happened at Florida Field.”

It was weird how Florida, for the third consecutive year, hogged the football. The Gators had it about 20 minutes, the Seminoles about 20. Florida ran 82 plays, FSU 54.

It was weird how FSU had six turnovers, Florida only one. And how Florida ran up 509 yards of offense to Florida State’s 257.

It was weird how the Seminoles found themselves backed up around their own goal early, and the tone of the game seemed set.

But what much of it boiled down to was that one side had a hot, healthy and most experienced quarterback going for it in Wayne Peace, and the other had mostly cold or not-so-healty or relatively inexperienced quarterbacking.

Bob Davis, the FSU starter, had little chance. The first three times he was in there, the Seminoles started at their 10, 20 and 13. Kelly Lowrey, who followed him, just was not healthy enough following arthroscopic knee surgery, or he was no in good enough shape following his long layoff. After one big, hopeful charge, Lowrey was mostly ineffective. The Seminoles went back to Davis, and when things got out of hand totally, they turned to sophomore Eric Thomas.

Peace, meanwhile, was picking FSU to bits. He completed 14 of 20 passes for 190 yards – no interceptions – and turned in some timely and surprising short ones, including two for touchdowns. Seven of his passes were pulled in by gifted Dwayne Dixon, who got 94 yards out of them. Every time things looked a little tight for the Gators, it seemed, Peace went to Dixon.

“Both teams seemed edgy and nervous at the start,” remarked FSU Coach Bobby Bowden.

That was so.

Florida drove from the opening kickoff to FSU’s 1, where on third down Peace tripped over one of his teammates and lost three. Then the Gators faked a field goal, and the Seminoles smothered them at the 10.

On third down, Greg Allen came running on the draw for 14 to the 26 but fumbled away the ball to Florida’s Tony Lilly. Four plays later, Peace scored from the 1.

After a punting exchange, Allen fumbled again – to Florida’s Greg Cleveland at the FSU 25. Soon Bobby Raymond kicked a 33-yard field goal for 10-0. That was his first of a school-record six, tying an NCAA and conference record.

After that atrocious start, Lowrey came in, getting good field position at the FSU 34 after a Roosevelt Snipes kickoff return. Five plays brought a touchdown, Lowrey passing 33 yards to a streaking Jessie Hester in the end zone. But Philip Hall missed the extra point, leaving it 10-6.

The second quarter was very young, and Florida State fans were stirring in their seats.

But Florida moved immediately from its 20 to a 13-6 lead on another Raymond 3-pointer from 33 yards out.

One of the game’s big plays came moments later when Lowrey, under heavy pressure from Roy Harris, threw in a hurry and Wilber Marshall intercepted at FSU’s 35. Seven plays later, on a busted-play run, Peace scored from the 5. Everything was going right for Florida as the score jumped to 20-6.

A daring kickoff return saw Eric Thomas lateral at about the FSU 3 to Hester, who zipped on down the sidelines to Florida’s 39. But a clipping penalty ripped the Seminoles. Cornerback Ricky Easmon intercepted Lowrey’s pass at the 23 a couple of plays later.

It was 23-6 at halftime after Florida drove again to a Raymond field goal, this one from 20 yards.

Any hopes Florida State had of a last-half rally were quickly dispersed.

Bruce Vaughn came up with the third interception off Lowrey, wheeling it 20 yards to the FSU 34 in the early moments of the third quarter. Raymond got his fourth field goal, a 46-yarder.

On Florida’s next possession, Lorenzo Hampton suddenly got outside on a run, shed tacklers along the way and sped 52 yards for a touchdown that made it 33-6.

Hampton finished the day with 69 yards on 10 runs. Neal Anderson got 87 on 17, Joe Henderson 62 on 7, and John L. Williams 51 on 10. Florida let ‘em all get in on its big act.

The Gators went on and on, scoring 11 of their first 13 times they got the ball.

Raymond kicked a 42-yard field goal. Anderson scored from the 2 to cap a 60-yard drive, and Raymond’s 31-yard field goal brought the score to 46-6 early in the last quarter after an interception and 38-yard runback by Roger Sibbald.

Florida State got a late score on a 32-yard Allen run, and Florida a final touchdown on sub quarterback Donnie Whiting’s 7-yard run.

The fourth quarter was primarily a big exit scene for Florida seniors. One by one, they left the game to tremendous applause from the crowd.

“We talked all week about something crazy happening early, and wondering if our players could cope with it,” said Pell.

The crazy things happened – and Florida coped and coped and coped.

FSU creams Tar Heels.
Everything’s Peachy, 28-3.

ATLANTA, GA – Good again, and lucky again, Florida State’s football team ran happily past stunned North Carolina 28-3 here Friday on the frozen turf of Atlanta Stadium.

A shining knight on a white charger almost had to show up for the Seminoles to win this Peach Bowl game, it seemed.

One did. His name was Eric Thomas.

Playing every snap in his first start at quarterback, the Valdosta sophomore directed Florida State to touchdowns on its first two possessions of the game. His first two passes of the day got those touchdowns, tosses of 15 and 18 yards to 6-foot-6 Weegie Thompson.

But passing on this day of shattering cold was something Thomas did to catch an opponent off guard. The Seminoles came to run – and run they did, for a whopping 265 of their game-total 364 yards.

Tailback Greg Allen churned for 97 on 17 tries, fullback Cletis Jones for a surprising 79 on 20, and Thomas himself netted 41 on 13.

And this, mind you, was against an opponent ranked 17th nationally in total defense. North Carolina also had led the Atlantic Coast Conference in defense against the run, defense against the pass and scoring defense.

FSU’s experienced offensive line, which Bobby Bowden seemed to think the most dominant force of the day, was not intimidated by the 24-degree weather that limited the crowd of 25,648. The Peach Bowl said there were approximately 15,000 people who had purchased tickets and did not come. This is a city that for two successive years has led the NFL in no-shows. On this day, at least, the Atlanta no-shows were being just plain sensible.

“This was a great win for us,” said Bowden, “but it did not redeem the disappointment of the season and the loss to Florida. It helped that this game was on national TV, but those people out there watching don’t hate the Gators like we do.”

Early in the second quarter, with FSU leading 14-0, a small plane twice flew over the stadium, flaunting an orange-and-blue score in its wake: Florida 53 FSU 14.

It was difficult to evaluate the most amazing aspect of an amazing game, but big tackle Alphonso Carreker cast his solid vote for a defense that limited the Tar Heels to 198 yards, including a mere 32 running.

“I think the key was stopping North Carolina’s run,” said Carreker. “If you do that, and force them to pass, you can beat them. They don’t throw the ball as well as they run it.”

Carreker was acclaimed the defensive player of the game, and Thomas the top offensive one by the Reach Bowl after pressbox balloting. Thomas won the CBS award as FSU’s top player, while linebacker Micah Moon got the network’s North Carolina honor.

By halftime, the Seminoles had the game in hand 21-0. It stayed that way until the fourth quarter when North Carolina got its lone score, on a 36-yard Brooks Barwick field goal, before the Seminoles registered a final touchdown.

FSU finished 7-5, North Carolina 8-4.

“We could have quit at the half, but we didn’t,” said Carolina Coach Dick Crum. “In the second half we played well enough to stay in the game.

“But in the first half we just self-destructed.”

Florida State got superb field position early – initially at its 38 following a kickoff return of 29 yards by Roosevelt Snipes, and then at its 46 after the defense had held Carolina inside it 20 on first possession and forced a punt.

On the opening series, Thomas got the Seminoles into the end zone in nine plays. The running of Allen was the major spur. When Allen fumbled around the 20, guard Jamie Dukes claimed it for the Seminoles at the 17 – a mighty big play. Three more plays saw Thomas fake brightly before throwing a payoff strike to Thompson in the end zone.

FSU required just five plays to score the second time around. The big gainer was an 18-yarder by Allen with a pitchout. From the 18, a falling Thomas threw under heavy pressure to Thompson and the tall fellow rambled on into the end zone.

Carolina, on its only offensive threat of the first half, probed to a first down at FSU’s 26, but Barwick missed a 42-yard try for a field goal.

In the second quarter, tight end Pete Panton jumped on a fumbled punt and gave FSU a crack from the Tar Heel 17.

Thomas and Jones got the ball to the 5. Snipes scored the touchdown from a foot away on third down.

Later, FSU pushed to Carolina’s 35 but Larry James intercepted Thomas at the 20 with 24 seconds remaining in the half.

The third quarter was pretty much of a punting duel.

From its nine, Carolina got off a fine drive that extended into the last quarter and ended with Barwick’s 3-pointer from 26 out.

Eddison Bramble blocked a Louis Berry punt soon after, giving Carolina a shot from FSU’s 42 but the Tar Heels ran out of downs after getting to FSU’s 12.

Then Thomas took the Seminoles on an 88-yard march. Passes of 23 and 17 yards to Panton on successive plays figured prominently. From the 1, Thomas kept and got the touchdown with 31 seconds left in the game.

Throwing just 13 times, Thomas got 99 yards out of seven completions.

“They mixed their offense as well as anyone we’ve seen,” said heralded North Carolina defensive tackle William Fuller of the Seminoles. “They had a great backfield – and a great quarterback.”

Bryan Blados, offensive tackle of the Tar Heels, similarly tipped his helmet to the FSU defense.

“They had tremendous pursuit after the ball,” he said. “All 11 players always seemed to be around it. Florida State played as well against the run as any team we played all year. It was out toughest challenge, and we just never got going.”

In this closing game on the next-to-last day of the year, Florida State – offensively and defensively – got it going in most unlikely circumstances.
