Noles Push No. 9 Irish To OT But Fall 41-38.

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - On the night that Florida State celebrated the legacy of the legendary Bobby Bowden, Mike Norvell opened up his second season as FSU's Head Coach. The Seminoles scored 18-unanswered points in the fourth quarter erasing a 38-20 deficit and forced No. 9 Notre Dame into overtime where the Irish would eventually seal the win. Notre Dame's Jonathan Doerer kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first overtime period to give the Irish a 41-38 win over Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in the season opener for both teams.

The Seminoles were spurred on in the fourth quarter by quarterback McKenzie Milton who led Florida State on two scoring drives in the final 5:16 of the game to erase a 38-28 deficit and tie the game at 38-38. Milton made his first appearance in a Seminole uniform and his first appearance on the football field after a 1,017-day absence after suffering a catastrophic injury as the quarterback at UCF in November of 2018.

Notre Dame won the coin toss in overtime and chose to go on defense. The Irish defense forced a missed field goal by Florida State and won the game on Doerer's game-winning kick.

Florida State outscored Notre Dame by an 18-0 margin in the fourth quarter to recover from a 38-20 deficit after three quarters of play. In that decisive fourth quarter, Florida State outgained Notre Dame by a 137-33 margin in total yards while converting on four of five third down plays. The Seminoles owned the fourth quarter time of possession battle by a 9:36-5:24 margin.

"I wanted to see the passion and pursuit to win the play that was in front of them (in the fourth quarter)," said Norvell. "You're down 18; you're not going to get it in one play. You have to continue to stack play after play on top of each other. That's what showed up. That's what I was so pleased with - that we weren't focused on what the scoreboard was saying at the moment. We were focused on the play in front of us. That's probably one of the greatest lessons that we learned from tonight."

Milton completed five of seven passes for 48 yards and led the Seminoles to their final 10 points of the game. Milton's first Florida State drive, which culminated in a 2-yard touchdown run by Treshaun Ward, brought the Seminoles to within three at 38-35 with 5:26 left to play in the fourth quarter. Milton then engineered a 10-play, 46-yard drive that ended in a 43-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald to tie the game at 38-38.

"It's one of those bang-bang moments," said Milton. "His (QB Jordan Travis) helmet pops off, and you just have to be engaged and ready to go on the sideline. I ran out there, thank God; it was time to roll. I didn't have time to process any emotions, the job had to be done. It gave us a chance to win the game ... but we just came up short. I felt like it was three years ago and I was playing ball. I was definitely grateful to be out there with the guys. I'm super-proud of the way our guys fought tonight."

It certainly was Florida State that fought throughout the entire game.

The Seminoles ran for 264 yards after averaging 199.9 yards per game on the ground in the 2020 season.

After surrendering the first touchdown of the game to Notre Dame in the first quarter, the Seminoles scored consecutive touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter.

The Seminoles were led on the ground by a career-high 144 yards rushing by Jashuan Corbin. He scored the Seminoles' first touchdown of the season on an 89-yard scoring to tie the game at 7-7. Corbin's run - the longest of his career by 64 yards - ranks as the fifth-longest touchdown scoring run in school history.

The Seminoles took their first lead of the game on a two-yard scoring plunge by starting quarterback Jordan Travis with 10:05 remaining in the first half. The rushing touchdown was Travis's 11th career rushing score and eighth in his last six games. Travis has now scored at least one rushing touchdown in seven consecutive games.

Notre Dame scored the final 10 points of the first half to take a 17-14 lead. The Irish gained a 48-yard field goal from Doerer to draw within 14-10. They regained the lead on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Jack Coan to Joe Wilkins.

Travis took to the air to begin the second half and the result of his first pass after halftime was a 16-yard scoring strike to Ja'khi Douglas to give the Seminoles a 20-17 lead. Douglas' touchdown was his first of the season and his third in the last two games after totaling two in the Seminoles' victory over Duke in the final game of the 2020 season.

The Fighting Irish answered immediately as Coan found Kevin Austin for a 37-yard touchdown and a 24-20 Notre Dame lead. It was Austin's second receiving touchdown of the game; he hauled in Coan's first scoring pass of the night in the second half.

Coan extended Notre Dame's lead to 31-20 on a six-yard scoring pass to Kyren Williams with 7:05 left to play in the third quarter.

Notre Dame scored 21 third-quarter points - the final 21 points of the quarter - to take a 38-20 lead into the fourth quarter before the Seminoles mounted a comeback for the ages before falling just short in overtime.

Football Falls In Week Two.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Damond Philyaw-Johnson caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from Zerrick Cooper on the final play of the game to give Jacksonville State a 20-17 win over Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Gamecocks scored the final 13 points of the night in the final 4:45 of the game to earn the win.

Florida State was led by first-time starter McKenzie Milton who completed 18-of-30 passes for 133 yards while running back Jashaun Corbin totaled 109 yards and scored a touchdown, earning his second consecutive 100-yard rushing game.

"Congratulations to Jacksonville State," said Florida State Head Coach Mike Norvell. "I did not have our team ready to play today. We definitely did not play in any way to the standard that what we are capable of. Penalties, self-inflicted mistakes; 100 percent on me. I did not have the guys ready to go and that will be fixed."

After a near storybook ending in last week's overtime loss to Notre Dame, Milton made his first career start as a Seminole. After 33 starts as the quarterback at UCF, he had the Seminoles on the cusp of their first victory of the season before Jacksonville State's final scoring drive that covered 83 yards in 10 plays in the final 1:32 of the game.

Milton connected with eight different receivers including three completions each to Darion Williamson (32 yards), Andrew Parchment (29 yards) and Camren McDonald (29 yards).

Corbin led Florida State's rushing attack that topped 200 yards for the second consecutive game. The Seminoles rushed for 202 yards against Jacksonville State after totaling 264 yards in their season-opener against Notre Dame.

Jacksonville State scored first on a second-quarter two-yard touchdown run by Josh Samuel to give the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead.

Following Jacksonville State's opening score, the Seminoles scored 17 straight points.

Florida State turned the momentum it's way as it forced the first turnover of the game. The fumble was recovered by the Seminoles' Sidney Williams and Florida State began at its own 47-yard line. The drive culminated in a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Corbin to tie the game at 7-7. The score was Corbin's second rushing touchdown of the season and the ninth of his career.

Florida State upped its lead to 14-7 on a two-yard touchdown pass from Milton to tight end Wyatt Rector with nine seconds left to play before halftime. The drive began with a 31-yard punt return by Keyshawn Helton and ended with Wyatt Rector's second career touchdown reception.

A career-long 53-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter gave the Seminoles a 17-7 lead. His field goal increased by 10 yards the longest field goal of his career, which came against Notre Dame last week.

Jacksonville State held the Seminoles scoreless over their final three drives of the game while scoring the final 13 points to win the game.

Football Drops ACC Opener.

by Chuck Walsh

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Quarterback McKenzie Milton completed 11 of 16 passes for 119 yards, Ontaria Wilson posted 91 receiving yards and Treshaun Ward ran for 48 yards but Florida State lost its ACC opener to Wake Forest by a 35-14 margin at Truist Field.

Wake Forest scored the first 14 points of the game and led 27-14 at halftime. The Demon Deacons scored only once after halftime as the Florida State defense limited Wake Forest to 152 total yards in the second half. Wake Forest held the ball on offense for 39 minutes as they not only kept Florida State's defense on the field but held the Seminoles to 21:00 minutes of possession. Wake Forest's up-tempo offense ran 89 plays while the Deacons limited Florida State's offense to 51 plays.

Florida State's defense was stout as it recorded 95 total tackles during the game. Jermaine Johnson led the Seminoles with 10 tackles (six unassisted). He was credited with one quarterback hurry and a quarterback sack. Florida State totaled three sacks in the game and have a team total of 12 in the first three games of the season - three more than the Seminoles recorded in nine games during the 2020 season. Johnson has 5.0 sacks and 7.0 tackles for minus yardage in his first season as a Seminole.

Quarterback Jordan Travis threw for two touchdowns - one to Wilson and one by Ward - as he completed five of six passes for 107 yards.

"Disappointed in the outcome of today," said Seminole Head Coach Mike Norvell following the game.

"I'm hurting for these guys that are in the locker room. There's a lot of work that goes invested. I believe in these guys. I believe in what they can do. I believe in what they can accomplish. In the moment, we've got to keep that same belief and go out there and play to the belief and go out there and play to the level and coach to the level that we are capable of. You've got to give credit to Wake Forest for how they played and what they did."

Wake Forest struck first after both teams traded turnovers on the first two possessions of the game (an interception by Florida State's Sydney Williams and a fumble by the Seminoles' Jashaun Corbin). The Deacons scored on a 49-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Hartman to A.T. Perry for a 7-0 Wake Forest lead.

Christian Beal-Smith increased Wake Forest's lead to 14-0 with a seven-yard scoring run as the home team scored for the second time in the first quarter. The Deacons' scoring drive was kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty called on the Seminoles.

Florida State cut the Deacons' lead in half late in the first quarter as Travis found Treshaun Ward on an 8-yard touchdown scoring play to make the score 14-7. The touchdown pass was the third of the season for Jordan and the first career touchdown reception for Ward.

Hartman connected with Donald Stewart on an 11-yard touchdown pass to increase Wake Forest's lead to 21-7 early in the second quarter. The scoring pass culminated a 12-play, 75-yard drive - a drive that included a 14-yard unnecessary roughness penalty called on the Seminoles.

A 42-yard field goal by Wake Forest's Nick Sciba increased the Demon Deacon's lead to 24-7 with 3:25 left before halftime.

A second touchdown pass by Travis - this time to Wilson - brought the Seminoles to within 10 at 24-14 at the 3:16 mark of the second quarter.

Wake Forest added a 22-yard field goal by Sciba and led 27-14 at halftime.

After forcing Florida State to punt on its first possession of the second half, Hartman led a lengthy 14-play, 90-yard drive that ended in a one-yard scoring burst by Justice Ellison. The touchdown increased the Deacons' lead to 35-14 and was the final score of the game by either team.

Football Comeback Falls Short Versus Cards.

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State nearly turned a 24-point deficit into the greatest comeback in school history. The Seminoles trailed 31-13 at halftime and outscored the Cardinals by a 10-0 margin in the second half, but fell just short of coming all the way back to tie the game at the end.

Florida State's defense held Louisville scoreless in the second half and gave itself the opportunity to tie the game with under one minute remaining, but Louisville escaped with a 31-23 win at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles had the ball at the 46-yard line driving towards a potential game-tying score when Kei'Trel Clark intercepted a McKenzie Milton pass at the Louisville five-yard line to end the Seminoles' comeback attempt.

Jashaun Corbin rushed for a career-high 159 yards and one touchdown while Milton completed 24-of-39 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown. The rushing effort marked Corbin's fourth career 100-yard game, while Milton's 248 passing marked his Florida State career-high. Defensive back Jammie Robinson recorded 13 tackles and Jermaine Johnson added to his team-leading sack total with one sack.

Florida State surrendered the first 17 points of the game, and then outscored Louisville by a 23-14 margin to close the game in the last three quarters.

The Seminoles' defense came to life in the second half as it limited the Cardinals' to zero points, 79 total yards (42 rushing, 37 passing), two first downs and a one-of-eight success rate on third downs while forcing six punts.

Florida State's offense totaled 273 yards of total offense (190 rushing and 83 passing), 13 first downs and punted only twice after halftime.

For the game, the Seminoles outgained the Cardinals by a 452-395 margin in total yards, totaled more first downs (23-21) and punted only four times.

"We came in at halftime and challenged the guys," said Head Coach Mike Norvell. "We continued to push them to focus on the play that was ahead. They did what I expected them to do. They came out and played really hard in the second half. Defensively, they did a great job of being able to get off the field."

While the Seminoles' defense turned their play up a notch in the second half, so did Milton and the offense.

Led by Corbin on the ground, the Seminoles totaled 205 rushing yards - the fourth time in four games this season they have rushed for more than 200 yards. Milton's 248 passing yards were the most passing yards for Florida State this season.

"We didn't finish drives," said Norvell. "We were very aggressive in what we were trying to do to get back into position (to win the game). We've got to finish."

Louisville scored the first touchdown of the game on its third offensive play of the afternoon. Cardinal quarterback Malik Cunningham led Tyler Harrell on a 59-yard fly pattern to put Louisville up 7-0 less than two minutes into the game.

Louisville increased its first quarter lead to 17-0 as Cunningham scored his 25th career-rushing touchdown at the 1:40 mark of the first quarter. He led the Cardinals on a 10-play, 51-yard drive to put the visitors up by three scores.

Florida State's Treshaun Ward put the Seminoles on the scoreboard with a 20-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 17-7. The touchdown was Ward's second in two games while the 20-yard run was his longest of the season.

Cunningham scored his second career rushing touchdown of the day at the 6:47 mark of the second quarter to increase Louisville's lead to 24-7. Louisville closed out its first half scoring on a 21-yard scoring pass from Cunningham to Jordan Watkins to make the score 31-7.

Florida State closed the deficit to 31-13 on a 23-yard catch and run from Milton to Andrew Parchment with 1:08 to play in the half. Milton completed three-of-four passes for 57 yards on that drive, which lasted only 41 seconds - the second-fastest scoring drive of the season.

"I thought our guys did a better job of working to play more disciplined in regards to eliminating penalties," said Norvell. "We didn't turn the ball over until the last play. Those things are always things that we always need to be aware of. We have to eliminate the missed assignments, we have to make sure we are playing with our eyes and we have to continue to coach better."

Florida State scored quickly in the second half. After receiving the kickoff, the Seminoles cut the deficit to 11 at 31-20 on a 75-yard scoring run on their second play from scrimmage. The scoring run by Corbin was his second of the season 75 yards or more. He also scored on an 89-yard run in the season-opener against Notre Dame.

Florida State pulled to within eight at 31-23 on a 45-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald with 8:40 remaining to be played.

"I expected the entire game that we were going to come back and win," said Norvell. "At halftime, even though we were down, I loved the guys' eyes. I was really pleased with the defensive effort there in the second half. Offensively we have to continue to grow and develop and put ourselves in a position to go and win games."

Football Walks Off Syracuse.

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla - Redshirt-freshman Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 34-yard field goal with no time remaining to give Florida State a 33-30 win over Syracuse at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Starting quarterback Jordan Travis engineered the final scoring drive, which accounted for 63-yards on seven plays and began on the Seminoles' own 21-yard line. He rushed for 58 yards and completed two passes for eight yards in the final 1:02 to set up the game-winning kick by Fitzgerald.

Travis completed 22-of-32 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 113 yards in the victory. He threw for two touchdowns - one to Camren McDonald and one to Keyshawn Helton - as he found seven different receivers during the win. He gained 103 of his 113 yards on the ground in the second half.

Fitzgerald totaled two field goals in the game, but none bigger than his first game-winner as a Seminole. After lining up the first time, Syracuse head coach Dino Babers called a time out. When play resumed, Fitzgerald split the uprights to give Florida State the victory.

"After halftime, I was already preparing in my mind," said Fitzgerald. "We were winning by three and already envisioned in my mind that they'd kick a field goal. We might be tied. We might be down by three. I went ahead and just mentally prepared for that moment and just treated it like any other kick. More than anything, I just trusted my technique and trusted James Rosenberry and Alex Mastromanno. We prepared through summer and fall. Just having the confidence and visualizing it going right down the middle."

Norvell, too, had a feeling the game would come down to the final play.

"All week, we knew this was going to come down to one play," said Head Coach Mike Norvell. "We didn't know which one play was going to be the difference. We just had to continue to fight, continue to improve and continue to believe. You saw that throughout the rest of the game whether we were up, whether we had a good play or bad play."

Syracuse quarterback Garrett Shrader was limited to just 13-of-23 passing for 150 yards by the Seminole defense. Sean Tucker, who entered the game averaging 134 yards and nearly two rushing touchdowns per game, was limited to 102 yards rushing and zero touchdowns.

Florida State's defense was led by Jammie Robinson who totaled nine tackles. The Seminoles' defense stood tall on a goal line stand with 3:34 left in the third quarter with a stop from the one-yard line to keep the Orange from scoring. The defensive stop allowed the Seminoles to hold onto a 23-13 lead.

The Seminoles' defense stopped Shrader for no gain from the 1-yard line on what might be considered the biggest defensive play for the Seminoles this season. The Orange had the opportunity to pull within 23-20 but instead turned the ball over on downs back to the Seminoles.

Though the Orange outscored the Seminoles by a 17-10 margin during the remainder of the game, it was the Seminoles who possessed the ball last and scored the final - and winning - points of the game.

Florida State scored first on a 35-yard field goal by Fitzgerald. His kick gave the Seminoles a 3-0 advantage and marked the first time Florida State had scored first in a game this season.

The Seminoles increased their lead to 9-0 on a 14-yard catch and run by McDonald. McDonald was guided into the end zone by two picture-perfect blocks by Ontaria Wilson and Keyshawn Helton. The touchdown pass was the first of two in the game for Travis.

Syracuse answered on its next possession to pull to within 9-6. Shrader scored on a 55-yard touchdown run - the longest rush and the longest rushing touchdown of his career.

Prior to Sharder's touchdown run, the Seminoles defense had held the Orange to three three-and-outs and a turnover on downs on their first four possessions of the game.

Shrader engineered a second consecutive touchdown drive for the Orange - mostly by himself and on the ground. He rushed for 38 of 60 yards on the five-play drive including a 16-yard touchdown run to put the Orange up 13-9. Shrader also completed one pass for 12 yards on the drive.

Florida State retook the lead on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Travis to Helton with 36 seconds left to play in the second quarter. With the extra point, the Seminoles took a 16-13 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A rushing touchdown of three yards by Andrew Parchment on Florida State's second possession of the third quarter gave Florida State a 23-13 lead. The play began as a mishandled lateral from Travis to McDonald, which was scooped up by Parchment who took it into the end zone for his third touchdown as a Seminole.

A 1-yard touchdown dive by Shrader capped a four-play, 49-yard drive and drew Syracuse to within three at 23-20 at the end of the third quarter. Shrader gained 33 of Syracuse's 49 rushing yards on the drive.

Shrader totaled a career-high 137 rushing yards on 16 carries and had a hand in all four of Syracuse's touchdowns.

Jashaun Corbin put Florida State up 30-20 with two-yard scoring burst with 13:24 left to play. Treshaun Ward set up the score with a 65-run bolt - a run that gave Florida State possession of a first and goal at the 2-yard line.

Syracuse closed the gap with just over 10 minutes remaining to be played as Shrader connected with Anthony Queeley on a 26-yard scoring play to make the score 30-27.

Syracuse then tied the game at 30 on a 24-yard field goal by Andrew Szmyt with 5:17 left to play.

The table was then set for Travis to march the team down the field and for Fitzgerald to make the winning kick.

"Those final runs were not designed," said Travis. "The holes opened up and the receivers made big blocks downfield. I couldn't do it without them. Keyshawn made a big block on the sideline that allowed me to stay in. I couldn't do anything without those guys. They worked really hard today. Shout out to the offensive line. I appreciate them. I love them, and I'm just so happy right now."

Norvell was certainly happy following the game.

"I'm happy for our players," said Norvell. "I know the work that goes into it. I know how much this program means to them. To see them finish the game the way it was finished was huge. I'm proud for them. That's all I can ever hope for that those guys as they continue to work, as they continue to grow and as they continue to develop that they put themselves in a position to finish like they did."

Down Go The Heels! Football Gets 2nd Straight Win.

by Chuck Walsh

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Quarterback Jordan Travis accounted for a career-high five touchdowns, ran for a career-high 121 yards and completed 11-of-13 passes for 145 yards in leading Florida State a 35-25 win over North Carolina at Kenan Stadium. The Seminoles rushed for 238 yards and did not allow a sack in winning their second consecutive game. The win was the Seminoles' second straight against North Carolina under head coach Mike Norvell after Florida State defeated the fifth-ranked Tar Heels last season at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Travis played one of the most complete games of his career. His 121 yards rushing marked the second consecutive game he had rushed for a career-high in yards after rushing for 113 in Florida State's win over Syracuse last week. Travis' efficiency also came in the passing game as he completed nearly 85 percent of his passes including a career-high 11 consecutive passes from the end of the first quarter through the conclusion of the game.

As important as Travis's running and passing efficiency was the Seminoles' turnover number - zero. Florida State did not turn the ball over for the first time this season. Equally as important, the Seminoles totaled only five penalties for 50 yards during the game - including just one in the second half.

Florida State received touchdowns from three different players - Travis (three passing and two rushing), Ontaria Wilson (two receiving) and Malik McClain (one receiving).

Travis closed the night as Florida State's sod captain when he took a chunk of Kenan Stadium turf back to the famous Sod Cemetery located just outside of the Seminoles' practice facility in Tallahassee.

"Our goal every Saturday is to go out and get a win," said Travis. "The boys did it today; they worked pretty hard all week. They came out with a great mindset the whole week. The O-Line worked really hard today; really, really hard. They kept me upright and I'm very thankful for that. The running backs ran hard, the receivers made great plays and the defense came up big."

"Tonight we played winning football," said Norvell. "We got better tonight."

The Seminoles, who ran only 54 offensive plays, were an efficient seven-of-10 on third down conversions and were a perfect three-of-three scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

"I thought Jordan did an extraordinary job," said Norvell. "Our entire team … that's an extremely explosive offense that we played against. I thought we were able to keep them in check for the most part. These guys, the way that they're invested, the things that they are pouring into this program, I'm just so very proud of them."

North Carolina led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Tar Heels opened the scoring on a 51-yard field goal by Grayson Atkins. The home team increased their lead to 10-0 on a 33-yard scoring pass from quarterback Sam Howell to Josh Downs.

Travis got the Seminoles on the scoreboard as he engineered a 12-play, 59-yard touchdown scoring drive to bring Florida State within 10-7. He found Malik McClain for the first receiving touchdown of his FSU career. Travis and the offense mounted a well-scripted drive with eight rushes for 38 yards and four completed passes for 21 yards.

Florida State took its first lead of the game, 14-10, on a 53-yard touchdown run by Travis midway through the second quarter. Travis, who became the Seminoles' all-time leader for yards rushing by a quarterback in Florida State's win over Syracuse, surpassed the 1,000-career yard rushing mark on the play.

"I read the end on that play," said Travis. "I was able to cut up-field and make a play. I couldn't do it without the guys up front making plays.

Travis led his third consecutive scoring drive in the second quarter, which culminated in a 32-yard touchdown pass to Ontaria Wilson. The eight-play drive marked the Seminoles' second scoring drive of eight plays or more in the second quarter with this drive eating up 80 yards and nearly four minutes of playing time.

Florida State outscored North Carolina by a 21-0 margin in the second quarter. The Seminoles' three scoring drives in the second quarter averaged nearly eight plays and 68 yards per drive.

After being shutout in the second quarter, North Carolina scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 21-yard scoring pass from Howell to Kamari Morales to make the score 21-17.

Travis and Florida State's offense answered on its next drive to increase its lead to 28-17 when Travis plunged in from one-yard out - his second rushing touchdown of the game.

Florida State opened its biggest lead of the game as Travis threw his career-high third touchdown of the game to Wilson to increase Florida State's lead to 35-17 as the third quarter drew to close. The six-yard touchdown reception was Wilson's career-high second of the game.

"The things that most people don't get to see is all of the work that he's (Travis) putting in the training room, making sure he was doing the little things with his film study," said Norvell. "I thought he played exceptionally with his eyes and those things aren't going to show up in the stat line. Being able to be in the right spot, making sure he is going through his progressions, he was 11-of-13 throwing the football, pushed the ball down the field.

"He's (Travis) competing at a very high level. I'm excited about his continued development and what he brings to this offense."

North Carolina narrowed the gap with a Tyler Chandler 2-yard rushing touchdown but it was as close as the Heels would get.

North Carolina scored on its first two possessions but scored only twice on their final seven possessions of the game.

Defensively, Jammie Robinson led Florida State with 12 tackles. Sydney Williams was also in double figures with 10 stops. Jarrian Jones earned his first career interception in the second quarter - a pick that led directly to the Seminoles' third touchdown of the game.

The Seminoles will head into their only off-week of the season and return home to play host to UMass on Oct. 23.

"To be able to go into a bye-week - and we need it - we are banged up," said Norvell. We are going to enjoy this one tonight."

Football Records Third Straight Win.

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State amassed a season-high 586 yards of total offense, had eight different players score touchdowns and scored the final 59 points of the game in a 59-3 victory over UMass at Doak Campbell Stadium. The win was the Seminoles' third straight - the first three-game winning streak since 2016.

Florida State scored five rushing touchdowns, totaled two receiving touchdowns and scored one defensive TD as well. The Seminoles' 59 points were the most scored by a Florida State team since scoring 77 in a win over Delaware State in 2017.

The Seminoles rushed for a season-high 365 yards. Jashaun Corbin led the Seminoles' offensive onslaught with 127 yards rushing and one touchdown on 11 carries. He averaged an amazing 11.5 yards per carry. Lawrance Toafili totaled 63 yards on four carries for a 15.8 yards per carry average and added a touchdown as well.

Defensively, Florida State held the Minutemen to 241 total yards (129 passing and 112 rushing), 14 total first downs and only 15 completed passes. The Seminoles recorded multiple interceptions for the second time this season.

Quarterback Jordan Travis completed five of 10 passes for 123 yards while rushing for 78 yards on nine carries - an 8.7 yards per carry average. His day ended following Florida State's first possession of the third quarter when he was replaced by Chubba Purdy.

"It's good to see the confidence slowly growing," said FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell. "The confidence is coming from the work and the investment they're making. It's something that we've got to continue to do to be able to put ourselves in a position - we've won three straight - there are some good feelings that we are working towards, and we get another opportunity to go on the road this next week."

UMass got on the scoreboard first on a 45-yard field goal by Cameron Carson just 1:07 into the game. The Minutemen gained possession of the ball after Florida State fumbled the opening kickoff. The fumble gave the visitors prime field position to be the first team to put points on the scoreboard.

Travis and the Florida State offense answered quickly to the first score of the day by the Minutemen.

Travis, in his third consecutive start, engineered a 6-play, 75-yard drive, which culminated in his first rushing touchdown of the game — a 3-yard score. On the drive, Travis gained 42 yards on two rushing attempts, including a 39-yard gain on the Seminoles' first offensive play of the game.

Florida State quickly increased its lead to 10-3 on a 36-yard field goal by Ryan Fitzgerald.

The Seminoles increased their lead to 17-3 on a 29-yard rushing touchdown by Corbin - his career-high tying fifth rushing touchdown of the season. Corbin did the bulk of the heavy lifting during the drive, with 43 yards on four carries. The Seminoles' biggest play of the scoring drive was a 51-yard catch and run by Malik McClain.

A 17-yard touchdown run at the 6:00 mark of the second quarter by Treshaun Ward marked the 24th consecutive point for the Seminoles and increased their lead to 24-3. Ward gained 45 yards on four carries during the drive and scored his third rushing touchdown of the season.

The Seminoles continued to increase their lead at will as the first half drew to a close. Florida State took a 31-7 lead following a 23-yard scoring run by D.J. Williams.

Florida State's second interception of the first half - this one by Jarvis Brownlee, Jr. - was returned for a 70-yard touchdown. The score increased Florida State's lead to 38-3. The interception was the second of Brownlee's career, the first pick-six of his career, and the first interception returned for a touchdown since Joshua Kaindoh accomplished the feat against North Carolina in 2020.

The touchdown by Brownlee gave the Seminoles a first-half season-high of 38 points and increased its lead to a season-best 35 points. The Seminoles outgained the Minutemen by a better than 3-1 margin in total yards (385-121) and totaled 262 rushing yards to UMass' 36. Florida State averaged 11.3 yards on 34 offensive plays as compared to 3.9 yards per play on 31 plays by UMass.

The Seminoles outscored the Minutemen by a 21-0 margin in the second half.

Chubba Purdy led a 69-yard touchdown scoring drive on his first possession under center this season. He completed two passes for 28 yards on the drive and a 12-yard scoring strike to Camren McDonald to make the score 45-3.

Florida State added to its scoring total and lead after recovering a UMass fumble on the ensuing kickoff and scoring on its next offensive play. Lawrence Toafili scored in a 10-yard run to increase Florida State's lead to 52-3.

Jordan Young scored Florida State's final touchdown of the game on a 5-yard scoring pass from Purdy.

"It was good to see Chubba come in and get a couple drives and passes," said Norvell. "He is getting better, he seemed in control. It was good to see him translate that into a game situation."

Florida State was led on defense by Amari Gainer who totaled six tackles, one tackle for lost yardage and a forced fumble. DJ Lundy earned five tackles, one sack and was credited with a forced fumble. Jammie Robinson and Brownlee earned interceptions for the Seminoles.

Florida State scored on eight of its 11 possessions and punted only once in the win. The Seminoles scored on their first five possessions (each of their possessions in the first half) and were stopped from scoring by the UMass defense only twice during the game. Florida State's final possession of the game ended with the final horn.

Florida State's defense held UMass scoreless over the final 58:57 of the game and on each of their final 11 possessions.

The Seminoles were whistled for only three penalties for 41 yards.

"I am happy for the win," said Norvell. "I want what's best for these guys. They come to FSU because of the traditionand what it means to be a Seminole. You find the areas where you come up short, where improvement is necessary, andthen you take those steps. We did what we needed to do. We were dominant in a football game. It's been a while sincewe could show that we were capable of that. We have a big challenge ahead and all we have is work in front of us."

Football Drops Close Game At Clemson.

by Chuck Walsh

CLEMSON, S.C. - Florida State's defense held Clemson to 13 second half points - but those 13 points proved to be enough as the Tigers escaped with a 30-20 win over FSU at Memorial Stadium. The Seminoles had taken a 20-17 lead on a scoop and score touchdown by Jermaine Johnson with 7:39 remaining in the fourth quarter but were unable to stop the Tiger offense, which scored the game-winning touchdown with 2:53 to play. The Tigers added the final touchdown of the game on a fumble recovery that was returned for a score after time had expired.

Florida State's defense forced three turnovers and scored on one - the touchdown by Johnson - and held Clemson to 377 yards as its three-game winning streak was stopped. The Seminoles held Clemson to 188 yards rushing and 189 passing.

Seminole quarterback Jordan Travis completed 14-of-21 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns. Jashaun Corbin led the Seminoles with 31 yards on nine carries but Florida State was held to a season-low 68 yards rushing. Travis, who entered the game averaging more than 57 rushing yards per game, was held to minus four yards on the ground versus Clemson's top-ranked defense.

Florida State's defense played well throughout the game. The Seminoles totaled 11 tackles for minus yardage (including 2.5 by Keir Thomas), were credited with five quarterback hurries (two by Keir) and two sacks (1.5 by Thomas).

"Congratulations to Clemson; they made the plays down the stretch to win the game," said FSU Head Coach Mike Norvell. "I'm really proud of the heart that our guys showed, the way they continue to battle there late. Just too many mistakes. It was a good defense we were going against. We were really struggling to consistently establish drives. We had some opportunities, but the negative plays, the penalties, were too much for us to overcome."

The Seminoles took their first lead as they scored the first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard pass from Travis to Corbin. For Corbin, it was the first receiving touchdown of his career. The extra point was blocked, which made the score 6-3 at the end of the first quarter. The touchdown pass was Travis's 10th of the season.

Clemson retook the lead, 10-6, at the halfway point of the second quarter on an 11-yard pass from quarterback DJ Uiaglaelei to Davis Allen. The Tigers' first touchdown of the game came on a four-play, 77-yard drive.

Florida State, as it has grown accustomed to in the second half of the season, answered quickly.

On one of the more incredible catch and run plays in college football this season, Lawrance Toafili scored on a 75-yard play to put the Seminoles ahead 13-10. During the play, Toafili was seemingly tackled but incredibly rolled over the Clemson defender and continued onto the end zone. The play was reviewed, and it was judged that Toafili was never down.

Clemson then answered with a touchdown of its own.

Shipley gained 45 yards on four carries, including a two-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left before halftime, to cap Clemson's third scoring drive and put the Tigers up 17-13. Shipley gained 45 of the Tigers' 83 yards on the scoring drive.

Florida State's defense held the Tigers scoreless in the third quarter and halfway through the fourth and then put FSU in the lead 20-17 on Johnson's touchdown (the first of his career).

"Those guys (our defense), they battled," said Norvell. "Our defense, I thought they stepped up. To be able to get the touchdown - you force a fumble, create the takeaway. I was really pleased with how they responded in the second half. They had some challenging situations. We tried to be aggressive in the second half and they just continued to rise to the call. There at the end, they were too much … we gave up a play there at the end."

Shipley scored the game-winning touchdown on a 21-yard rush with just under 3:00 remaining in the game. It was Shipley's second rushing touchdown of the day and it gave the Tigers a 24-20 lead.

After an exchange of punts, the Seminoles got the ball back with less than :30 needing 91-yards for a game-winning TD. FSU was unable to get close enough for a Hail Mary and tried to lateral the ball down the field on the final play. Clemson was able to pick up an errant pitch and add a touchdown with no time remaining in the game.

"We've got to continue to grow, we've got to continue to learn," said Norvell. "Our guys showed tremendous heart, tremendous fight. I'm proud of this football team, but we've got to play cleaner at the end. At the end of the day, it's really disappointing."

Wolfpack Win 28-14 In Doak.

by Chuck Walsh

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State's valiant second-half comeback attempt came up short as NC State earned a 28-14 win over the Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles limited the Wolfpack to 14 points and just 41 yards rushing in the second half but could not overcome a 14-0 halftime deficit.

Starting quarterback McKenzie Milton completed 22-of-44 passes for 233 yards and one touchdown in his first start since September 25. Milton was effective in the second half as he directed two scoring drives and threw for 154 yards. He brought the Seminoles from 14 down to within seven at 21-14 midway through the third quarter.

Milton connected with eight different receivers with Keyshawn Helton and Andrew Parchment both catching a team-high four passes. Jashaun Corbin was Florida State's leader on the ground as he gained 38 yards on 14 carries.

Defensively, Jammie Robinson totaled a team-high 10 tackles and his second interception of the season. Robinson's first half interception of NC State's Devin Leary broke a streak of 228 passes without an interception for the Wolfpack quarterback.

'Noles Take Down Miami.

by Steve Stone

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In a rivalry filled with heroics, Saturday night added the next chapter for Florida State.

An electric atmosphere at Doak Campbell Stadium witnessed an exciting 31-28 fourth-quarter comeback victory by the Seminoles over the Hurricanes. A 1-yard plunge by quarterback Jordan Travis, who had just completed a do-or-die 4th and 14 throw to receiver Andrew Parchment trailing 28-23, ignited the win for FSU.

"Wow. What a game. So proud of our team," Norvell said afterward. "Just coaches, everybody involved in the program. The work, the investment. Responding to adversity. The way we worked. Everything we do in our program is to prepare you for a moment like that. To see the joy from our players in that locker room, the joy from our fans, what an incredible atmosphere, so grateful for everybody that was here tonight. It was a special night for Florida State."

Norvell's first rivalry win came on the back of another game-winning drive engineered by Travis. The redshirt sophomore from West Palm Beach, Fla., got the ball following a big defensive stop and FSU down 28-23 with 2:19 left.

Right away, Travis once again showed his deep ball abilities when he hit wide receiver Ja'Khi Douglas in stride down the right sideline for 59 yards. Three subsequent plays that were ineffective created the 4th-and-14 situation at Miami's 25 where the Seminoles needed to convert to keep the game moving with just over a minute remaining.

Anything less than 14 yards, and the Hurricanes walk out with their fifth straight win in the rivalry.

But Travis came through with a strike to a streaking Parchment, who nearly bullied his way into the end zone and was stopped short at the 1-yard line. With FSU being able to tick more time off the clock and having a fresh set of downs, Parchment's stop actually aided the Seminoles as Travis scored the game-winning touchdown just a few players later, then added the two-point conversion on a run up the middle.

Getting the ball with just 24 seconds remaining at the Hurricane 25, Miami's Tyler Van Dyke was unable to lead a game-winning drive for the Hurricanes. His only completed attempt was a 20-yard throw to Charleston Rambo on fourth down at Miami's 45, but with only two seconds left Van Dyke spiked the ball to stop the clock at the line of scrimmage. Due to the minimum of three seconds being needed in the given situation, the game was ruled over by the officials to set off a celebration in Tallahassee.

Travis undoubtedly gets a game ball after throwing for 274 yards on 18-of-26 passing, as well as rushing for 62 yards with two scores and a two-point conversion. He guided Florida State to an early 17-0 lead, and despite Miami mounting a comeback with 21 unanswered second-half points to take a 28-20 lead, he stay composed on FSU's final drive like he did when he led the Seminoles to a game-winning drive against Syracuse on Oct. 2.

Nearly unblockable tonight was FSU redshirt senior defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who stuffed the stat sheet with seven tackles, three sacks, five tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Currently a semifinalist for some of the nation's top awards for defensive linemen, Johnson was a force throughout the game and made it uncomfortable for Van Dyke in the pocket.

The performances of Travis and Johnson allowed FSU to get its first win over the Hurricanes since the "Block at the Rock" in 2016, when Seminole legend DeMarcus Walker blocked a Miami extra point with 1:41 remaining to preserve a 20-19 win for FSU.

Redshirt freshman Ja'Khi Douglas led FSU's receiving corps with 90 yards on four catches, none bigger than his 59-yard grab on the final drive for FSU. Jashaun Corbin continued his tremendous season by averaging 4.5 yards per carry, continuing to stress FSU's reliance on a good ground game, along with a touchdown.

Overall, the Seminoles churned up 434 yards of total offense to Miami's 359. The Hurricanes were hurt by 14 penalties that went for 105 yards. Both teams combined to go 6-for-6 on fourth-down attempts, and FSU continued its standout red zone percentage by converting on all six trips inside the 20.

Big plays were also made by FSU freshman corner Omarion Cooper, who totaled four pass break-ups on the night as well as an interception. Jarvis Brownlee Jr. led the Seminoles on defense with 10 tackles.

Miami's Van Dyke finished 25-of-47 with 316 yards, four touchdowns and two early interceptions in the loss for the Hurricanes.

The game started well for the Seminoles, especially on the defensive end when they picked off Van Dyke on two of Miami's first three possessions. Cooper intercepted a deep ball by Van Dyke, and Jammie Robinson picked off a pass at the FSU 46. It was followed by Jermaine Johnson's strip sack and recovery by the Noles at Miami's 12-yard line with 1:11 left in the first quarter.

FSU's first drive of the game included a seven-play, 78-yard touchdown drive capped by a two-yard run from Travis to make it 7-0 early. Following Johnson's strip sack toward the end of the first quarter, FSU capitalized right away when Corbin took a hand-off down the right side for a 12-yard score, Corbin's seventh touchdown of the season to help create a 14-0 FSU lead.

Ryan Fitzgerald's 22-yard chip shot extended the FSU lead to 17-0 early in the second quarter on a drive that was aided by a 35-yard grab down the right sidelines from Ontaria Wilson. That's when the Hurricanes began chipping away into the Seminole lead, which included an acrobatic touchdown catch by Mike Harley on a ball that was tipped by an FSU defender and fell into Harley's arms in the back of the end zone, cutting the FSU lead to 20-14 in the third quarter.

Miami took the lead on a four-yard touchdown pass to start the fourth quarter and give it a 21-20 lead, then added to it when Jaylan Knighton pin-balled off a few FSU defenders after catching a pass over the middle to create a 28-20 deficit for the Noles.

"This game is a game of emotion. Those momentum swings, they happen and we made some silly mistakes that we have to correct," Norvell added. "We allowed them to extend a couple drives. We had a couple moments where we had our eyes in the wrong spot and didn't execute like we needed to in all three phases. You can see the confidence. Everything builds in this program. We challenge them daily. We challenge them to be their best on the field. We challenge them to be their best off the field in the classroom and everything that they do to prepare them for confidence in that moment when things get uncomfortable.

"Where anybody can put a smile on their face and it feels good when you are in that moment where you feel that the momentum is against you and things are stacked up, you continue to play and you focus on the things that you can control and I thought our guys absolutely did that."

Fitzgerald hit a crucial 29-yard field goal to give FSU a chance still trailing 28-23 with 4:43 left. Despite allowing Miami to move the chains on the first play on a 12-yard catch at the Hurricanes 37, Johnson and Cooper combined to stop Miami on a critical 3rd-and-4. The stop set up a Hurricanes punt and led to the FSU game-winning drive.

Noles Outlast Boston College on the Road.

by Tim Hofmann

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - In a game that saw the Florida State defense set a season high of 11 tackles-for-loss, Keir Thomas and Fabien Lovett pressured Boston College's Phil Jurkovec one final time to force an interception to force an Akeem Dent to hang on to a 26-23, improving to 5-6.

"The defense kept battling and overcoming adversity," FSU head coach Mike Norvell said. "All the things that showed up, but I'm so proud of our football team to find a way at the end. From all of the situations we worked to be able to put ourselves in a position to close off and end a game like that. It went down to the last second and I'm really pleased with our players and their execution."

In front of 33,363 at Alumni Stadium, the Noles held the Eagles' (6-5) offense to back-to-back three and outs to start the game, and FSU capitalized with an eight play scoring drive that ended with a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Travis to Ontaria Wilson.

After Boston College cut the lead to four with a field goal, Travis tossed his second touchdown of the day to Lawrance Toafili, who returned to the lineup after missing two games. His seven-yard touchdown catch put FSU up 14-3.

Boston College responded with a drive of their own, but the stingy FSU defense stuffed the Eagles on fourth and two at the FSU 11 to take over on downs.

After a 39-yard punt from Alex Mastromanno to pin the Eagles at the 10 yard line, Thomas recorded his first sack of the game, and Kalen DeLoach sniffed out a screen pass and tackled the runner in the end zone for a safety to make the game 16-3. Ryan Fitzgerald tacked on three points with a 36 yard field goal to give the Noles a 19-3 lead into halftime.

Receiving the second half kickoff, the Noles went 75 yards in just 2:32 thanks to an acrobatic 15-yard touchdown catch from Malik McClain to take a commanding 26-3 lead.

However, the Eagles stormed back with 20 unanswered points and the ball with 8:00 to go in the fourth quarter.

Boston College drove down the field looking to tie or win the game, but the defense held at FSU's 37 yard-line, forcing the Eagles to throw on fourth and nine. Jurkovec heaved a pass as Thomas and Lovett applied pressure and Dent snagged his first-career interception, sealing the win for the Noles.

Jarques McClellion led the Noles with eight tackles, a career high, while Thomas posted a season-high seven tackles and tied his season high of two sacks. Thomas has now recorded 13 tackles in the past two games.

Offensively, Travis once again led the offense going 20-34 with 251 yards and three touchdowns, tying a career high.

Travis spread the ball around to 10 different receivers with Wilson leading the group with three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Ja'Khi Douglas added four catches for 44 yards while McDonald secured three balls for 54 yards.

Jashaun Corbin led the Noles on the ground with 62 yards on 13 carries. Treshaun Ward added 25 yards on four carries.

"We're going to continue to work away," Norvell added. "It sets us up a huge week ahead. To be able to stand in frontof those guys in that locker room to know they've battled back to this point. We're 0-4 at the beginning of the seasonand not many people gave us a chance and we're going into this last week with an opportunity to earn one more andthat's special."

Football Falls In Gainesville.

by Chuck Walsh

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - An valiant fourth quarter effort by Florida State's offense during which it scored the final 14 points of the game fell short as Florida took a 24-21 victory over the Seminoles at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Quarterback Jordan Travis, who returned from an injury in the first quarter, put his team in position to tie or possibly win in the fourth quarter but the comeback fell just short and the Seminoles completed their season with a 5-7 record.

After falling behind 24-7, the Seminoles closed their gap to 24-14 on a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Treshaun Ward with 9:46 remaining and to 24-21 on an eight-yard passing touchdown from Travis to Ontaria Wilson with 49 seconds left in the game.

The Seminoles attempted an on-sides kick but were unable to get the ball back and had to watch as Florida ran out the final 49 seconds on the clock to gain the win.

On the defensive side of the football, Jammie Robinson led the Seminoles with a career-high 18 tackles, a total that included 1.5 tackles for lost yardage. D.J. Lundy totaled nine tackles while Kalen DeLoach and Akeem Dent totaled eight tackles each. The Seminoles' defense earned three interceptions, one each by Robinson, DeLoach and Jarvis Brownlee. Brownlee's interception came with less than one minute remaining the first half and came in the end zone as the Gators were driving with the score tied at 7-7.
