Another Successful Weekend.
The nationally-ranked Florida State indoor track & field teams find another weekend of success; this time in Arkansas.
FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The nationally-ranked Florida State men's and women's indoor track teams continued what has already been a great start to the 2011 season with an impressive showing this weekend at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Highly-touted newcomer Violah Lagat earned her first victory as a Seminole. Lagat edged out TCU's Briyanna Thomas for the win with a time of 2:10.65 in the women's 800-meter run.
Fellow distance runner Amanda Winslow also had the same type of success over the weekend. The sophomore returns to Tallahassee with a win in the women's one-mile run invite with a mark of 4:41.87.
Winslow's teammate, Jessica Parry, finished 10th in the event with a time of 4:51.28.
Another member of FSU's national runner-up women's cross country team, Pasca Cheruiyot, came in first in the women's 3000-meter run invite with a 9:13.51 clip. Astrid Leutert came in fifth in that event with a time of 9:29.88.
Lagat, Hannah Brooks, Parry and Winslow then combined to finish fourth in the women's distance medley relay.
As for the women's long jump, Florida State All-American Kim Williams came in second with a distance of 21 1/3 feet. Amy Harris' came in sixth in the same event.
On the men's side, Seminoles star Maurice Mitchell came in second in the men's 60-meter dash with a time of 6.66.
A week after a memorable performance in Virginia, Brandon Byram followed that up with yet another triumph. The senior finished first in the men's 200-meter dash with a 20.73.
And Byram wasn't the only men's track athlete to pick up a win.
Sophomore Darrin Gibson's 1:50.29 time was good enough to beat all challengers in the men's 800-meter run.

The Florida State indoor track team posts several national qualifying times at the Husky Classic in Washington and the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas this weekend.
FAYETTEVILLE, AR and SEATTLE, WA - The nationally-ranked Florida State indoor track team found itself on opposite sides of the country this weekend but the results were the same: strong showings from a group of Seminoles.
Florida State coach Bob Braman and assistant coach Karen Harvey ventured to the University of Washington with some of FSU's top distance runners.
While at the Husky Classic, Michael Fout and David Forrester left their marks in the 5000m and 3000m, respectively. Fout ran his race in 13:52.56 and Forrester finished with a time of 8:00.06 in his event.
"Fout's 5,000-meter time is a National Top-20 performance and the second- fastest time in FSU history," Braman said afterwards. "It's also the top time in the ACC this year. Dave's 3,000-meter time is a National Top-25 performance and a lifetime best."
Justin Harbor also posted an 8:41.26 in the 3000m.
As for the women, Harvey was especially pleased with the performance of a savvy veteran and talented new Seminole.
"We saw a big improvement from newcomer Violah Lagat in the 800m," Harvey said. "Pasca Cheruiyot hit the automatic qualifier time for NCAAs in the 5000m."
Lagat ran the 800m in 2:06.94 and Hannah Brooks finished the same race in 2:08.50. Cheruiyot posted a 16:05.36 in that 5000m race and Astrid Leutert ran the 3000m in 9:20.94.

"We took six ladies to Washington and we had all of them improve and run lifetime bests," Harvey said. "This was only our second meet of the season so we are really looking forward to more improvements."
While the distance runners were representing FSU on the Pacific Coast, several 'Noles were in action at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
And just like their teammates, the Seminoles competing a little closer to home certainly left a garnet-and-gold impression.
In the sprints, Maurice Mitchell and Brandon Byram claimed the No. 2 and No. 3 spots for the 200-meter dash in the entire nation. Mitchell finished first by running the 200m in just 20.70 and Byram was closely behind at 20.74.
In the 800-meter run, Darrin Gibson had an excellent performance as his third-place mark of 149.96 is the second fastest time in the ACC to date.
Like Mitchell, Seth Proctor (14.29.08) topped his race as both he and teammate Nicholas Maedel (14:35.18) set lifetime best performances in the 5000m and improved their positions on the ACC honor roll.
In the jumps, Ngoni Makusha jumped 26 feet, which is the fourth-best jump in the country. Freshman Paul Madzivire added his name to the list of potential ACC scorers with a 24-foot long jump and a 49-foot triple jump.
In the triple jump, Paul finished behind fellow freshman Phillip Young, who broke the 50-foot barrier with a two-foot personal record jump of 50'11".
In the throws, Michael Putman claimed his third victory of the indoor season by throwing 59'6". Kemar Hyman then ran a 6.76 in the 60-meter dash and Termaine Grant posted an 8.00 in the 60-meter hurdles as both continue to improve.
On the women's side of things in Arkansas, Kim Williams won the Tyson Invitational with her season-best jump of 45'5" in the triple jump. In the same event, Michelle Jenije improved to 43'3", which is the No. 4 jump in the country behind Williams.
The women's sprints saw Teona Rodgers (23.67 in the 200m), Stephanie Simpson (24.17 in the 200m), Danielle Jeffrey (7.58 in the 60m) and Marecia Pemberton (7.44 in the 60m) lead the group to season-best times.
In the shot put, Chelsea Whalen continues to improve and she increased her personal record to 47'6".
The women's mile relay is taking shape, as the group improved by five seconds from its previous competition.
"It's only two weeks away from the ACC Indoor Championship and we are reaching championship form," FSU associate head coach Harlis Meaders said.

BLACKSBURG, VA - The Florida State men's and women's indoor track teams remain in strong contention as day two of the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships came to a close Friday night on the campus of Virginia Tech.
As the dust settled on the second day of competition at Rector Field House, the FSU men are in second place with 33 overall points. The first-place Hokies boast 52 overall points.
With 22.5 points, the Seminole women currently reside in fifth place as Clemson leads the pack with 54 points.
"Overall we are about where we expected to be," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "I thought we had good performances on both sides. We had some bad luck in some tactical things but that happens."
The men are positioned second thanks in part to an incredible performance in the long jump. Ngoni Makusha claimed the gold with a nation's-best distance of 8.15m while Brian Chibudu grabbed the silver medal.
Unsurprisingly, Kim Williams also came out on top for the 'Noles in the women's long jump. Her distance of 6.55m is the second longest in the country. Amy Harris also took bronze in the event with a national qualifying mark of 6.43m.
In the men's 60m, Maurice Mitchell finished first by posting a time of 6.61 that is good enough to be fourth in the country. Kemar Hyman came in fourth with a qualifying time of 6.65.
Hyman also qualified in the 200m with an eighth-place finish on a time of 21.46.
Like Hyman, Teona Rodgers qualified in two different events. Rodgers earned a qualifying time of 8.36 in the 60m and then did the same in the 200m with a third place finish.
In the men's 5000m, Mike Fout's qualifying time of 14:09.15 helped him finish third.
The final session of the 2011 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships will begin Saturday with field event competition at 11 a.m. The running events, in which most individual champions are still to be determined, begin at noon.
"We've got some weapons tomorrow,"
Braman said. "It's going to be tough, though. There's no doubting that."

BLACKSBURG, VA - Florida State's Maurice Mitchell achieved MVP honors and the men's and women's track teams both finished in second place at the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday in Blacksburg, Va.
Mitchell was the top men's track performer on the campus of Virginia Tech as he captured gold medals in both the 60m and 200m races. For his efforts, he was named the men's MVP for running events.
Despite Mitchell's performance - and the performance of several other FSU student-athletes - the men's team was unable to add to its unprecedented run of conference crowns.
Entering the weekend, the Seminoles had won eight consecutive men's ACC Indoor Championships. By the end of the final event Saturday, the Virginia Tech men came out on top with 140 points compared to the 'Noles' 98. On the women's side, Clemson won the championship with 152 points and 100 points were enough to put the Seminoles in second place.
"We're always disappointed to not win ACC Championships; especially when there's an eight-year run on the line," said FSU head coach Bob Braman, who had never not won a men's league title during his tenure. "But we lost to two truly outstanding teams in Virginia Tech and Clemson."
While Mitchell was dominating the running events on the men's side, senior Kim Williams was doing the same thing in the women's field events.
A day after grabbing a championship in the women's long jump, Williams' national-qualifying distance of 49-6 3/4 in the triple jump was enough for another first-place finish.
In doing so, she became the first woman in conference history to earn an ACC championship in the triple jump all four years of her eligibility.
Michelle Jenije finished with the silver just behind Williams with a jump of 43-2 1/4 and Amy Harris finished sixth in the event.
Prior to the triple jump, Allyn Laughlin placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 50-0 3/4. Michael Putman then won a gold medal in the men's shot put.
Putman's throw of 58-1 1/4 provided the Seminoles with 10 points and gave them an 89-87 edge in the overall points standings. But Virginia Tech then took four of the top five spots in the men's pole vault to capture the lead for good.
The women's one-mile run kicked things off in the running events and Amanda Winslow gave FSU a big boost with her win. Her final time of 4:40.34 capped what was a great event for the Seminole women. Jessica Parry placed fourth and Pasca Cheruiyot wound up in fifth place in the mile.
Other highlights for Florida State included a second-place finish by Brandon O'Connor (47.39) in the 400m, Brandon Byram's third-place result in the 200m with a time of 21.02, a third-place outcome for Kemar Hyman (6.71) in the 60m, Marecia Pemberton's third-place finish in the 60m thanks to a 7.35 clip and finally a fourth-place performance by Teona Rodgers (23.72) in the 200m.
"In my mind, the ACC outdoor track & field season started at 5 p.m. today," Braman said. "I hope we're up to the challenge in eight weeks when we meet again."

COLLEGE STATION, TX - Ngonidzashe Makusha picked the perfect time to unleash his best long jump of the 2011 indoor track season.
And now the Florida State men's track performer is an NCAA champion.
Makusha leapt to a season- and collegiate-best distance of 26-8 1/2 in the men's long jump final Friday in the first of two days of the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.
Makusha's amazing performance early in the day helped set the tone for an FSU men's squad that is in position to potentially finish in the top three when all events conclude on Saturday. Like the men, the Seminole women also had an impressive day at Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Senior jumper Kim Williams added to her incredible FSU resume with an All-American performance in the women's long jump. Her distance of 21 feet was good enough for second.
After both advancing out of the men's 200m dash preliminaries, junior Maurice Mitchell -- who had already qualified for Saturday's 60m final earlier in the day -- and senior Brandon Byram finished in spots two and three to capture All-American honors. Mitchell ran the final 200m in 20.41 and Byram did it in 20.64.
"We had a phenomenal day as a program; particularly on the men's side," Florida State head coach Bob Braman said. "Maurice ran a huge lifetime best in the prelims in the 60m then in that 200 he was just two one-thousandths away from a championship. Makusha did an incredible job."
The men's 60m dash saw Mitchell earn a second-place mark on a day-two qualifying time of 6.55.
Sophomore distance runner Amanda Winslow placed sixth in the one-mile run with a time of 4:38.30; a mark that was good enough to qualify for Saturday's final.
In the women's 60m dash, freshman Marecia Pemberton crossed the finish line with a time of 7.27 for 11th place.
Senior Pasca Cheruiyot finished with a ninth-place finish in the women's 5000m final while junior Amy Harris came in 15th in the women's long jump final.
Saturday will not only see Mitchell go for gold in the 60m and Winslow do the same in the one-mile run. Williams and junior Michelle Jenije will compete in the women's triple jump.
Cheruiyot will also cap off her stellar FSU career by running in the women's 3000m.
Byram, Brian Chibudu, Phillip Young and Brandon O'Conner will finish the weekend by competing in the 4x400m men's relay.
"The men's team scored 24 points and all of a sudden we are in the mix," Braman said. "We are really proud of how well our young men and young women responded and set us up for tomorrow. We are looking for good finishes.
"It's a great day to be a Seminole."

COLLEGE STATION, TX - Florida State senior track star Kim Williams put an exclamation point on her indoor track career with another NCAA championship Saturday.
Competing in her final indoor event as a collegian, the Kingston, Jamaica native earned the triple jump title at the final day of the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas.
Williams' jump of 45-9 3/4 was a foot-and-a-half further than her closest competitor. The result marked the second indoor triple jump championship of her career.
While Williams and junior Michelle Jenije (13th place, 41-9 3/4) were representing the Seminole women in the triple jump, junior Maurice Mitchell was doing the same for the men on the track.
Fresh of an All-American performance in the 200-meter dash on Friday, Mitchell earned another All-America nod Saturday. Mitchell placed third in the 60-meter dash for the 'Noles.
As a team, the FSU men finished fifth and the women earned a ninth-place mark.
"This was just an incredible weekend for both the men and women," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "We are so proud of Kim Williams for continuing to be such an amazing competitor and champion. The men had a tremendous meet. Maurice Mitchell had a great two days for us."
For the women, senior Pasca Cheruiyot concluded her fantastic Florida State career by placing 15th in the 3000-meter run. Fellow distance runner Amanda Winslow netted a fifth-place finish in the women's one-mile run on her lifetime-best time of 4:35.16.
The final event of the day saw the men's 4x400-meter relay team jump out to a lead but eventually fade down the stretch. The foursome of Brandon Byram, who earned All-American honors a day before the in the 200-meter dash, Brandon O'Conner, Phillip Young and Brian Chibudu place ninth.
Ngonidzashe Makusha won the NCAA long jump title on Friday.
"Two top-10 finishes is really outstanding," Braman said. "We built a lot of momentum heading into the outdoor season."

Day one of FSU Relays at Mike Long Track sees the nationally-ranked Florida State men's and women's track teams earn several victories.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Thousands of participants and spectators flocked to Mike Long Track Friday for the first full day of track and field action at the 2011 FSU Relays Friday.
And while the competition was fierce and the competitors talented, FSU's top-10 men's and women's squads both performed well; picking up wins in the men's and women's 4x400m relays, the women's javelin throw and the women's 100m hurdles.
FSU acheived its first win of the day when senior Stephanie Simpson, freshman Marecia Pemberton, senior Teona Rodgers and junior Danielle Jeffery came in first in the women's 4x100m relay. The foursome finished the race in a time of 45.62.
In the same event, freshman Amber Cambridge, sophomore Briana Emanuel, junior Latera Davis and freshman Bianca Smith posted a time of 48.50 for a 10th-place finish.
Also picking up an early win Friday was the team of Maurice Mitchell, Paul Madzivere, David Ambler and Ngoni Makusha in the men's 4x100m relay. They finished the event in 39.63.
The winning ways on the track then continued when Teona Rodgers followed up her dominating USF performance last weekend with a win in the 100m hurdles. In the event, she set a new outdoor personal record with a time of 13.26.
Moments later, Tremaine Grant (14.22) placed second and Justin Byrd (14.61) finished fourth in the men's 110m hurdles.
Like that race, two Seminoles finished in the top five when the women ran the 400m dash later in the day. Newcomer Elizabeth Ichite earned a third-place finish with a mark of 55.30 - a time that was a shade away from her personal best. Junior Latera Davis then crossed the finish line at 56.24 for a fifth-place position.
While the track performers were picking up victories, the same happened in the afternoon on the field.
In the women's javelin throw, freshman Chelsea Whalen won the event with a impressive distance of 143-10. The length of her toss was just over seven feet longer than her nearest competitor.
Sophomore Brittany Linder (82-08) finished 13th and freshman Colleen Schwab (82-04) finished 14th in the javelin throw.
Davis then placed third in the women's long jump with a distance of 18-07. Also placing third was Kamorean Hayes, who did so in the women's discus with a throw distance of 147-06.
Freshman Phillip Young leapt a length of 22-11.75 in the men's long jump for a finish of sixth place.
Three Seminoles closed out the day with the men's 10000m run. Junior Nicholas Maedel came in sixth with a time of 31:24.45 while sophomore Jacob Brooks (31:57.60) was ninth and junior Christopher Rego (32:18.37) was 10th.
One event earlier, redshirt freshman Dominick Cabrera earned a ninth-place mark in the men's 5000m run with a time of 15:32.58.
In the men's hammer throw to start the day, freshman Markindy Sineus placed 10th with a distance of 146-06. In the women's hammer throw, freshman Shanea Rufus tossed 154-05 for a sixth-place slot.
The last day of the 2011 FSU Relays comes to a close with more strong showings by the Seminoles while the top men's distance runners look good in California.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - A mid-afternoon lightning delay wasn't enough to put a damper on the final day of the FSU Relays at Mike Long Track.
Saturday's finale to the four-day event saw the nationally-ranked Florida State men's and women's track and field teams add to their victory total. And, across the country at the Stanford Invitational, the top men's distance runners were strongly competing, too.
"The FSU Relays were another very successful meet," FSU associate head coach Harlis Meaders said. "We had a lot of good teams come in and compete with us. The officials did a great job and the facilities crew did a great job putting on the meet. I thought a lot of our athletes did really well."
In one of the most anticipated events of the day in Tallahassee, senior star Charles Clark did not disappoint. Clark earned the win in the men's 300m dash invitational with a Mike Long Track-best time of 32.86 to just barely get by fellow 'Nole Brandon O'Connor's 32.87 mark.
The invitational run also included FSU's Kevin Williams and former star Brian Dzingha.
Senior Teona Rodgers then achieved victory Saturday with an impressive performance in the women's 200m dash. Rodgers finished the race with a time of 23.63. She edged out national champion jumper Kim Williams, who finished fourth with a time of 24.55.
Freshman Bianca Smith came in eighth with a 24.81 time.
A week after setting a new personal record in the discus throw at USF, Michael Putman dominated the event at the FSU Relays. Putman finished the day with a first-place finish on a throw of 176-09.
Putman followed up his discus throw performance with a second-place finish in the men's shot put on a throw of 59-05.
Garnering another FSU victory was Kamorean Hayes.
Hayes uncorked a throw of 50-04 in the women's shot put to take the title. Allyn Laughlin was closely behind in the event with a second-place finish on a length of 49-11. Freshman Chelsea Whalen, who a day earlier won the women's javelin throw, finished fourth in the shot put with a toss of 46-00.75.
Freshman Markindy Sineus finished 15th in the discus throw with a distance of 128-04.
Freshman Marsha Ariol performed well in the women's 400m hurdles. Ariol crossed the finish line at 1:02.60 for a fifth-place mark.
Keeping up with the youth movement, the men's 800m run saw redshirt freshman Darrin Gibson came within 1 1/2 seconds of his personal best with a time of 1:50.32. That time earned him a second-place finish. On the women's side, Lyndsey Spragins finished in the 12th spot with a time of 2:18.54.
In the women's high jump, Colleen Schwab finished 14th with a jump of 4-11. Her teammate, Michelle Cullum, was 15th with a height of 4-11, too.
Latera Davis jumped to a distance of 39-01.75 in the women's triple jump. That length was enough to give the junior a second-place finish.
The men's 400m hurdles saw Tremaine Grant finish in fourth place with a time of 52.48. Behind a time of 53.04, Phillip Young came in fifth and Andrew Jacobs (54.08) finished eighth.
Maxwell Hyman (55.47), Brix Gomez (55.83) and Miles Sparks (55.87) finished 15-17 in the 400m hurdles for FSU.
Freshman Morgan McGhee generated a time of 12.52 in the women's 100m dash for a 13th-place finish.After the lightning delay temporarily halted all action on Mike Long Track, the men's pole vaulters returned to the runway where Andrew Lehaye finished third with a jump of 16-02.75. Warren Harper placed sixth with a height of 16-03.
While Florida State was hosting its first of three home meets of the outdoor season, the program's top men's distance runners were across the United States competing at the Stanford Invitational.
Senior Ciaran O'Lionaird represented the Seminoles well as he finished second in the men's 10000m run on a blistering time of 28:32.30. Not only did that time come with four seconds of matching the all-time FSU record but it is the current national leader.
In the men's 5k at Stanford, Michael Fout (13:46.19) finished fifth and David Forrester (13:47.60) completed the race in eighth.
"We had some fantastic races at Stanford," said FSU head coach Bob Braman, who accompanied the Seminole distance runners to California. "Ciaran had a terrific day and Fout and Forrester are second and fifth nationally. We'll need Ciaran, Mike and Dave to be factors for us in June if we are going to compete for a National Championship."
The men's 5k also saw Jakub Zivec run a 14:17.97, Wes Rickman a 14:22.19 and Matt Leader a 14:24.07. Seth Proctor ran a 30:43.59 in the men's 10000m run.

Looking Good at Florida Relays.
The Florida State men's and women's track teams perform well in Gainesville at the two-day Florida Relays meet.
GAINESVILLE, FL - The two-day Florida Relays may have taken place in Gator Country but it was a Seminole Uprising in the men's 200m dash invite, the women's 5000m run and the women's shot put for the top-10 Florida State men's and women's track and field teams.
Junior Maurice Mitchell achieved a gold-medal finish in the 200m as his 20.36 time carried him to victory. Senior Brandon Byram then snagged a silver medal with his time of 20.56.
Senior Charles Clark raced to a 15th -place finish on a time of 21.30 in what was his first 200m dash of the season and just his second race of the year.
While the FSU men's sprinters were looking good in the quick events, some of the top women's distance runners were performing equally as impressive.
In the women's 5000m run, senior Hannah Brooks set a blazing new personal record in her first-place finish. Brooks finished the race well in front of all her competitors with a time of 16:09.81. And not too far off that pace was her teammate, Jessica Parry, who finished in second place and also set a personal record with a 16:12.70 clip.
As if a one-two finish and two personal records weren't enough for the 'Noles in the event, junior Astrid Leutert came across the finish line in fourth place. Her time of16:37.18 was - you guessed it - also a personal record.
"That was a really good race for those three," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Maurice and Brandon had terrific performances in the 200. Overall, we were very pleased."
Like the 500m run, the women's hammer shot put saw some Florida State domination.
Junior Kamorean Hayes earned the win in the event with a throw of 51-01.50. She was followed by a second-place finish from senior Allyn Laughlin, who mustered a 48-07.25.
In ninth place was freshman Chelsea Whalen with a 44-09.75.
Junior Michael Putman's toss of 57.31 meters in the men's discus throw would warrant a third-place finish. The talented thrower then followed up that performance with a second-place finish in the men's shot put on a personal-record toss of 61-02.25.
"Mike was the top collegian in the men's throws," Braman said. "He really performed well against some great competition."
The men's 4x100 team finished as the top overall collegiate squad with a time of 38.87, which edged the heralded group from the University of Florida.
Sophomore Marecia Pemberton then dashed to a fourth-place mark in the women's 100m. Pemberton crossed the finish line in 11.60.
In an event that featured a great deal of elite talent, Andrew Lehaye established a third-place finish in the men's pole vault with a jump of 16-11.05.
Senior Teona Rodgers opened the two-day relays for the Seminoles with a 24th-place finish in the 100m hurdles on a time of 14.17. Later in the day she would post a 12th-place finish in the women's 200m dash with a time of 23.90.
While Rodgers was the lone FSU athlete to compete in the women's 100m hurdles, two men took part in the men's version. Junior Tremaine Grant finished 17th and sophomore Justin Byrd came in 30th. Grant ran a 14.43 and Byrd a 14.79 in the 100m hurdles. Grant would later finish 11th in the men's 400m hurdles.
Next on Friday's schedule of events was a men's 400m event that saw sophomore Brandon O'Connor post a time of 46.58 for a seventh-place finish.
Callie Giffin performed well in the women's pole vault. The junior from Tyler, Texas finished fifth with a vault of 3.67 meters. Senior Lizbeth Mabry earned a 13th place mark with a height of 3.47 meters and Giffin's sister, Lauren Giffin, vaulted 3.47 meters as well.
The men's 100m dash featured a 15th-place finish for sophomore David Ambler, who accrued a time of 10.64 in the race. Sophomore Brandon O'Connor then sprinted to a time of 46.58 in the men's 400m dash for a final spot of seventh place.
In the men's 1500m run, senior Alex Smyth followed up his dominating performance at Stanford last weekend with a sixh-place finish thanks to a time of 3:46.73.
Saturday saw Whalen finish eighth in the women's javelin throw with a hurl of 139-07. Fellow freshman Phillip Young placed 16th in the triple jump with a distance of 14.79m.

The 2011 Seminole Invite comes to a close Sunday as several of FSU's track stars earn victories and set high marks.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - The second and final day of what Florida State track and field coach Bob Braman called the "best ever" Seminole Invite came to a close Saturday just before 6 p.m.
And when all was said and done with the day's events, Braman had reason to smile about his program's accomplishments in what was the second of three home meets this season at Mike Long Track.
"This was a great two days of action," Braman said. "Auburn and Georgia Tech both had some talented athletes here and we ran a lot of our stars. Brandon O'Connor had an amazing day running three events and Maurice Mitchell was Maurice Mitchell. Charles Clark did well in the 200 (meters), Marecia Pemberton was phenomenal and the women's distance runners were great. Ciaran O'Lionaird is a 10000 meters guy but he did a fantastic job in the 1500 meters.
"The women's throwers did really well."
Elsewhere, Kim Williams was dominating at Texas Relays as FSU's superstar jumper busted out a wind-aided 46-09.00 triple jump to take the title in that event. Michelle Jenije posted a 42-02.25 in the same event while Phillip Young had a 49-01.75 in the men's triple jump.
As Braman mentioned back in Tallahassee, O'Connor had a busy day running in the 200m and 400m dashes and manning the second leg of FSU's winning 4x400m relay team. In that relay, O'Connor teamed with Tremaine Grant, Darrin Gibson and Mitchell to post a victorious time of 3:09.82 to edge out an unattached squad that featured Olympian and former FSU star Walter Dix.
O'Lionaird, who is already in the top three in the country this outdoor season in the 10000m run, achieved a 3:41.02 in the 1500m run for the win. The senior's superb time in the event is his personal record and is the current best in the nation and 14th in the world this year. Also in the men's 1500m, David Forrester (3:45.53) finished second and Mike Fout (3:47.15) fourth.
"That was incredible," Braman said about O'Lionaird's suprising performance. "It was huge."
In the women's 1500, Jessica Parry ran to victory with a 4:19.80 to come extremely close to her personal record of 4:19.08. Newcomer Violah Lagat did run a personal record with a 4:23.92 for second place.
Mitchell, who owns the world's fastest 200m dash, won the men's 100m with a time of 10.28. His teammate, Kemar Hyman was almost as quick with his 10.38 and second-place finish. David Ambler registered a 10.53.

Also snagging a win on Saturday was Gibson in the men's 800m run. Gibson recorded a 1:49.11 in the event as John Grellner ran a 1:53.38 and Daniel Silva had a 1:58.81.
Senior Allyn Laughlin then won the women's shot put. Her 50-06.00 was enough for the win and FSU's Kamorean Hayes (49-00.25) and Chelsea Whalen (48-01.25) were second and third, respectively.
In the women's 2000m steeplechase, Astrid Leutert crushed her competitors by over 30 seconds with an incredible 6:37.92. Emily Ness was second with a 7:08.15.
Following Rodgers' dominating performance in the hurdles, both Grant and Justin Byrd competed in the men's 110m hurdles. In that event, Grant placed second with a time of 13.94 and Byrd followed closely with a third-place finish on a 14.35 clip.
Grant would go on to win the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 52.11 as Andrew Jacobs was second with a 53.65. Brix Gomez rounded out the top three in the event with a 54.24, Maxwell Hyman was 54.95 and Miles Sparks ninth with a 55.53.
In the men's hammer throw, junior Trevor Andrews placed third with a toss of 161-02 while David Lhamonie was fourth with a distance of 158-09. The women's hammer throw saw Shanea Rufus earn a second-place finish with a 159-04 mark.
Latera Davis then registered another second-place finish for the 'Noles. Davis leapt 40-00.75 in the women's long jump.
In keeping up with the runner-up trend, O'Connor reeled off a 46.97 in the men's 400m dash. In that race, Clark placed 10th with a time of 49.16 and freshman Terill Gibson was 18th with a 50.89. Chris Snow posted a 51.14 and Collin Lomagistro had a 51.31.
In the women's 800m run, Christal Washington ran a 2:11.03 for a second-place finish while Lyndsey Spragins ran a 2:15.43.
The men's shot put had Michael Putman finish second with a 60-00.50.
Marsha Ariol finished fifth in the women's 400m hurdles with a 1:04.12.
Pemberton placed third overall in the women's 200m dash with a time of 23.67, followed by Davis (24.51) in seventh place, Emanuel (25.13) in 12th, and Smith with a time of 25.16 placing in 13th.
Clark and O'Connor finished in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, respectively, in the men's 200m dash. Clark finished the race in 21.00 and O'Connor in 21.09 while Kevin Williams finished in seventh with a time of 21.45.
In the men's pole vault, Warren Harper placed seventh with a jump of 15-01.00. Drew Marcello earned a 14-07.25 and John Kennedy a 14-07.25, too. The women's pole vault resulted in a 10th-place finish for Julia Gibson (9-06.25).

FSU Caps Off War Eagle Invite.
The FSU track and field teams now turn their attention to the ACC Outdoor Championships.
AUBURN, AL - The Florida State men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up their final meet before the ACC Outdoor Championships Saturday night in Auburn, Ala.
Competing in the War Eagle Invite, many of Florida State’s top women’s distance runners made the trip to Auburn’s campus.
In the women’s 800m run, Violah Lagat came extremely close to setting a new personal record with her time of 2:06.99 in a third-place finish. Amanda Winslow (2:10.13) was seventh, Jessica Parry (2:10.64) was ninth and Christal Washington ran a 2:16.40.
On the men’s side of the 800m, John Grellner ran a 1:53.64 to finish eighth and Daniel Silva ran a 1:56.09.
In the men’s 1500m run, Matt Leeder earned a second place finish on a time of 3:50.79.
Also finishing in second place was Lizbeth Mabry in the women’s pole vault. Mabry vaulted a height of 12-03.50. In the same event, Callie Giffin and Lauren Giffin also vaulted 12-03.50 each.
The men’s pole vault saw Andrew Lahaye finish second second with a mark of 16-05.25. John Kennedy vaulted 15-03.50 and Warren Harper 1409.50.
In the men’s triple jump, freshman Paul Madzivire leapt 45-10.75 for a 14th-place finish. Danielle Williams placed 15th in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-03.75.
Kevin Williams also placed 15th in his event. He did so in the men’s 400m dash on a time of 48.37. Pablo Navarrette ran a 49.26 and Terill Gibson a 50.45.
Maxwell Hyman then posted a 55.58 in the men’s 40m hurdles. Nicholas Russo ran a 57.62 in the men’s 400m hurdles.

ACC Champions Again!
For the seventh year in a row, the Florida State men win the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
DURHAM, NC - Just as it has done the last six consecutive seasons, the Florida State men's outdoor track & field team sprinted its way to the top spot on the conference podium.
In an exciting finale to the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Seminole men used a last-day surge to propel themselves to an incredible seventh-straight league championship in Durham, N.C. Saturday.
Trailing Virginia Tech 141.5 to 124.5 after 18 of 21 total events at Wallace Wade Stadium on Duke's campus, the men's team needed a big 200m dash and got it by finishing in spots one, two, three and four.
Junior Maurice Mitchell, who was named the MVP of the men's track events, earned the individual title in the race by zooming to a lifetime best time of 20.19 that tied former FSU star Walter Dix's 2007 ACC record. Finishing second was Brandon Byram (20.57) and Charles Clark (20.78) was third while Brandon O'Conner (20.91) place fourth.
The impressive sweep-and-then-some in the event gave FSU 29 points and pushed the team into a lead it would not relinquish. The 'Noles finished the three-day championship with a grand total of 174.5 points and Virginia Tech was second with 153.5 points.
"Virginia Tech has got to be a top-five team," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "We had some unbelievable performances and we needed every one of them; we only won by 21 points. That's not a huge margin. I don't know today what we could have done better here."
For Mitchell, his time is the current world leader and the win marked his second 200m dash championship in as many seasons. Clark won the race in back-to-back seasons in 2008 and 2009.
As the men claimed another crown, the FSU women fought valiantly and finished second with 132.5 points. Clemson won the women's championship with 202 points.
"The women, we were just trying to do as best as we could," Braman said. "We didn't double-up and triple-up our kids and we were still able to score 130 points to get second. We are really proud of both teams."
Posting the first championship performance of the day were Kemar Hyman, Mitchell, Ngoni Makusha and David Ambler. The quartet of Seminoles raced to victory in the men's 400m relay thanks to a time of 39.61.
The win marked Makusha's second title of the weekend as he individually won the men's long jump on Friday. And it wasn't his last.
Makusha blazed his way to a 9.97-second championship performance in the men's 100m dash to set the ACC record. Joining Makusha on the podium after the lightning-quick race were Mitchell (10.03) and Hyman (10.27), who finished second and third, respectively. Ambler placed sixth with a time of 10.41.
While Makusha was updating his gold medal collection, Kim Williams was doing the same for the women.
Like Makusha, Williams nabbed an ACC Championship in the long jump on Friday. And, like Makusha, she added another on Saturday as she took the league title in the women's triple jump for the unprecedented fourth consecutive year. Williams' leap of 46-1 1/4 on her third attempt was enough to erase the competition and set the new ACC- and Wallace Wade Stadium-record.
Michelle Jenije earned the bronze medal and All-ACC honors in the triple jump with her lifetime best mark of 42-9 1/2.
Before Williams added to her legend, another FSU men's performer took the top spot again; this time in an event that has been dominated by the 'Noles over the years.
Sophomore Brandon O'Conner sprinted to his first ACC Championship in the men's 400m dash thanks to a personal record time of 45.89. His performance marked the second year in a row in which FSU took the top spot in the event and the sixth time in the last eight years.
Not to be outdone by the sprinters, one of FSU's best distance runners left his mark on both the men's 1500m and 5000m runs.
Senior Ciaran O'Lionaird edged out Virginia's Robby Andrews on a lifetime best time of 3:40.69 in the 1500m in what is a new ACC record. Junior Matt Leeder then placed seventh with a time 3:49.52.
The win marked O'Lionaird's first career ACC Championship and he wasn't done there. While the men's sprinters gave the Seminoles their first lead on Saturday, it was O'Lionaird's championship performance in the 5000m run at the end of the day that solidified the overall team title.
In that 5000m, O'Lionaird became the first FSU athlete since Andrew Lemoncello in 2005 to win the top spot behind his ACC-record and lifetime best mark of 13:52.11. David Forrester (14:00.41) placed fifth and Wesley Rickman (14:11.28) was eighth.
"Ciaran getting two ACC records on the same day is almost impossible," Braman said. "Virginia Tech had a monster day but we were down by 40 and we knew that the back end would carry us. We knew the 100, 200, 5k and the 1500 would provide big scoring chances for us and that's what happened. It was just an incredible meet for the kids."
Like her distance-running counterpart in O'Lionaird, Jessica Parry also found first-time ACC glory on Saturday.
The London, Ontario native obliterated the competition in the women's 5000m run late in the day en route to establishing her first ACC Championship. Parry's time of 16:14.74 was just two second shy of matching her personal record in the event while Hanna Brooks (16:25.19) took third.
Sophomore Andrew LaHaye achieved the first All-ACC honors of his collegiate career to start the day. The Lake Brantley High School graduate tied for third in the men's pole vault with a jump of 16-2 3/4.
After gathering 5.5 points from LaHaye's performance, freshman Phillip Young added two more for the 'Noles with his seventh-place finish in the men's triple jump.
Sophomore Amanda Winslow generated the first points of the day for FSU women with her All-ACC performance in the 15000m run. Winslow ran a lifetime best time of 4:18.12 to finish as the runner-up in the vent and earn eight points. Junior Violah Lagat crossed the finish line in a lifetime best 4:21.53 for a three-point sixth-place finish.
Following Winslow's second-place performance was another silver-medal showing by Florida State when Brittany St. Louis ran to runner-up spot in the 400m dash. St. Louis completed the full lap around the track in 53.49 for eight points while freshman Elizabeth Ichite earned three points on a sixth-place time of 55.49.
Registering a bronze medal was Marecia Pemberton, who earned All-ACC honors on a time of 11.52 in the women's 100m dash. Senior Teona Rodgers then registered her own third-place finish in the 200m dash on a time of 23.55.
Teona Rodgers grabbed two more points for the Seminole women with a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles.
At the end of the day, both men's and women's teams finished with the bronze in the 1600m relays. Clark, Brian Chibudu, Tremaine Grant and Byram paced the men with a time of 3:08.85 while Latera Davis, St. Louis, Ichite and Christal Washington competed for the women with a time of 3:41.04.

Harris, FSU Finish Twilight.
Amy Harris wins two events Saturday and the Florida State track & field teams close out their final home meet of the year, FSU Twilight.
TALLAHASSEE, FL - Junior Amy Harris set a personal record and earned two wins and several other Florida State track & field athletes took event titles at the final day of the FSU Twilight meet Saturday at Mike Long Track.
Harris specializes in the long jump but that didn't stop the junior from leaving her mark in the women's 100m dash. Moments after winning her primary event with a leap of 6.31m, Harris jogged across the track in time to take her block and sprint her way to a win and new personal record of 11.54 in the 100.
In that women's 100m dash, Harris edged out her teammate, Bianca Smith, who ran an 11.85 while Briana Emanuel (12.36) was fifth, Morgan McGhee (12.63) was eighth and Amber Cambridge (12.64) was ninth.
Like Harris, Ngoni Makusha knows a thing or two about competing in field and track events. As usual, Makusha looked good in the men's triple jump, with a top spot on wind-aided jump of 8.35. Paul Madzivire performed well, too; jumping a wind-aided 7.94m.
Just like she did about 24 hours earlier, Teona Rodgers achieved an early victory on her home track. After taking the 200m dash Friday, Rodgers ran to first place in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.67.
In the field, Michael Putman continued his dominant season with a win in the men's discus throw. Putman won the event with a throw of 57.39m.
Michelle Jenije then leapt her way to a first-place wind-aided 12.64m in the women's triple jump. Latera Davis' jump of 12.08m was good enough for second place.
Also earning a win on Saturday was Darrin Gibson, who took the top time in the men's 800m run. Gibson finished the race in 1:49.24.
"We got some things done today," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Amy Harris running like she did is huge. Once her speed on the track moves over to the jump she is going to really turn some heads. And Ngoni did great as usual with the wind. Overall we were pleased with both days. It sets us up moving forward we just have to keep after it."
In the women's 800m run, Christal Washington earned a third-place finish with her 2:10.99 clip.
In the men's 110m hurdles, Tremaine Grant placed third with a 14.16 while Daniel Salgado was 12th with a 15.09.
Danielle Williams placed fifth in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.66m and freshman Terril Gibson ran a 49.80 in the men's 400m dash to take 12th place.
The men's and women's hammer throws served as the starting events on Saturday. While no FSU women competed, Trevor Andrews placed third in the men's competition with a throw of 53.60m. David Lhamonie's throw of 51.94m was good enough for fourth.
In the women's discus throw, Kamorean Hayes finished fifth with a toss of 45.80m while Marsha Ariol was fourth in the women's 400m run with a time of 1:03.93.
Late in the day and under the lights, Phillip Young wound up fourth in the men's 400m hurdles with a mark of 54.06. Maxwell Hyman (54.39) was sixth in that race and Brix Gomez (55.07) was 10th.
Chelsi Woodruff then finished sixth in the women's 1500m run with a 4:39.77 while Bree McArdle ran a 4:39.77 for seventh place. Emily Ness (4:40.52) was eighth and Kaitlyn Iselborn (4:46.76) was 12th.
A few minutes later, Smith finished the women's 200m dash in fifth place behind a time of 24.98. Emanuel ran the race in 25.20 and Cambridge did so in 26.52.
In the men's pole vault, Andrew Lahaye was the top FSU competitor. He finished third with a height of 5.11m. Warren Harper (4.56m) was ninth and John Kennedy (4.41m) and Charles Janson (4.41m) were 10th and 11th.

Barroilhet Places 2nd at Wake.
Gonzalo Barroilhet finishes as the top collegian and second overall at the Deacon Combined Events in Winston-Salem, NC.
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Florida State's Gonzalo Barroilhet finished second overall and as the No. 1 collegiate performer at the Deacon Combined Events on Wake Forest's campus.
Barroilhet, who was the only FSU track & field athlete to compete in Winston-Salem, NC, finished the two-day event with 7,322 points. That total trailed only Eric Broadbent from HPC Elite.
The competition marked Barroilhet's first true return to action after recovering from an injury.
"Gonzalo did a great job considering he hasn't competed in over a year," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "He's on the bubble for National Qualifying. We're hoping he gets another shot."

UNF Osprey Invite Comes to End.
Michael Putman, Chelsea Whalen, Teona Rodgers and the women's 4x100 team all capture victories in Jacksonville Saturday.
JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Florida State men's and women's track and field teams capped off the final day of the UNF Osprey Invitational Saturday.
A day after winning the men's shot put, junior Michael Putman did the same in the men's discus throw with a distance of 177'05".
The next Seminole to pull out a victory in Jacksonville happened to be a group of 'Noles. The quartet of Teona Rodgers, Stephanie Simpson, Danielle Jeffery and Brittany St. Louis won the women's 4x100m relay behind a time of 44.30 to edge out the squad from Coastal Carolina.
Rodgers would then go on to capture another victory; this time in the women's 200m dash. Rodgers posted a wind-aided 23.21 to take the top spot.
Also posting a victory on Saturday was Chelsea Whalen. The talented freshman won the women's javelin throw with a hurl of 150'05".
In the men's 800m run, Darrin Gibson ran a 1:51.74 to finish second.
Like Gibson, Tremaine Grant earned a runner-up spot by doing so in the men's 110m hurdles final. Grant ran a wind-aided 13.86 and Justin Byrd finished fourth with a 14.53.
The 400m hurdles, Marsha Ariol finished the race 1:03.95 to earn a sixth-place finish. The men's 400m hurdles saw a fifth-place finish from Brix Gomez (53.96) and a ninth-place finish from Maxwell Hyman (54.42). Trevor Andrews ran a 55.22 to come in 13th and Phillip Young was 19th with a 57.55.
In the men's 200m dash, senior Charles Clark achieved a wind-aided 21.08 that resulted in a fourth-place finish.
Kevin Williams finished 17th in the men's 400m dash with a mark of 50.51.
In the women's high jump, Danielle Williams leapt to a height of 5'4.5" to finish sixth. Latera Davis finished ninth in the women's triple jump. Davis completed the event with a distance of 37'8".
In what was the second-to-last event of the day, Davis, St. Louis, Simpson and freshman Elizabeth Ichite came in second place in the women's 4x400m relay. The four Seminoles completed the race and the day in a time of 3:43.71.
While many of the FSU throwers, jumpers and sprinters were in action in Jacksonville, several the 'Noles' distance runners were slated to compete at North Carolina in the Kent Taylor Relays.

Hannah Brooks and Seth Proctor earn wins at the Kent Taylor Relays as some of the top FSU distance runners gear up for Regionals.
CHAPEL HILL, NC - While the rest of the Florida State men's and women's track and field team members were finishing out the UNF Osprey Invitational, several of the Seminoles' top distance runners were preparing for action in Chapel Hill, NC at the Kent Taylor Relays.
And just as the 'Noles on North Florida's campus were performing well, so too did the team members on North Carolina's campus late Saturday.
Hannah Brooks stole the show with wins in the 800m and 1500m runs. In the 800, Brooks very nearly matched her personal record with a quick time of 2:04.88. In the 1500, she did the same thing; coming within a few hundredths of a second to matching her personal record. Brooks finished her second race of the night in 4:16.92.
With Brooks taking the top spot in the 800m run, Amanda Winslow and Violah Lagat finished in spots three and four, respectively. Winslow ran a personal record 2:06.61 and Lagat ran a 2:06.65.
The 800m also saw Jessica Parry (2:07.69) and Christal Washington (2:13.75) finish seventh and ninth, respectively.
In the 1500m run, Winslow finished second to Brooks with a time of 4:17.50. Parry was fourth with a personal record 4:17.90 and Lagat was sixth with a 4:24.03. Washington ran a 4:45.59 to place 17th.
"The ladies all executed two races in one hour very well," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "We have been looking forward to this challenge since conference. Hannah was on fire. Pushing Hannah through both finish lines were her teammates Amanda Winslow and Jessica Parry. This group is gearing up and catching some fire at the right time with NCAA Regionals two weeks away. It is going to take great fitness and determination to qualify for NCAA this year."
As for the men, Seth Proctor had his best meet of the year with a win in the 5000m run. Proctor's time of 14:07.15 is a personal record while Nicholas Maedel also had his best time ever in the race with a 14:13.35 and second-place finish.
Jacob Brooks finished fourth in the 5000m run with a time of 15:22.89.
In the men's 1500m run, David Forrester finished fourth on a time of 3:44.89 and Alex Smyth ran a personal record 3:45.61 to end up in the sixth position.
"We had a really good meet," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Those were probable regional marks for Seth, Nick and Alex. I thought the guys competed really well against really good competition."

The Florida State track & field teams finish the first round of the NCAA Championships with seven more qualifiers.
BLOOMINGTON, IN - The opening round of the NCAA Track & Field Championships came to a close Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind. with Florida State qualifying seven more for the final site in Des Moines, Iowa.
With Saturday's outcome, FSU managed to qualify a grand total of 19 over the course of the three days on Indiana's campus; 13 for the men and six for the women.
"We had a really good day today," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "We put ourselves in a very good position on the men's side and the women are still in contention for an overall top-10 finish."
The women kicked off the final day with a bang, taking fourth place in the 4x100m relay with a final-site qualifying time of 44.25. Featured in that race were Marecia Pemberton, Stephanie Simpson, Brittany St. Louis and Amy Harris, who replaced Teona Rodgers.
Following their female counterparts' lead, the Seminole men edged out Florida and took the overall top time in the 4x100m relay. Maurice Mitchell, Kemar Hyman, Ngoni Makusha and Paul Madzivire combined to post a 39.17 national-qualifying time.
FSU then earned its second women's-event qualifier of the day as Hannah Brooks pushed her way to a 4:17.21 in the 1500m run to take second place in the second of two heats.
In the men's 200m dash, Brandon Byram came on strong in the final 100 meters to win the second heat on a qualifying time of 21.05 despite a -2.3 wind. Competing in his second event of the day, Mitchell then took the third heat with a top overall time of 20.66 to make it two more garnet and gold final-site qualifiers.
The men's 5000m then saw Ciaran O'Lionaird place second with a time of 14:06.26 to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships. A little while later, Michael Putman tossed the discus 56.4m to qualify for the men as well.
"Ciaran O'Lionaird looked really, really good," Braman said. "The women's 4x100 really came together and they should get better moving forward. Hannah Brooks getting through was really good. Overall it was just a nice day for us."
The men's 4x400m relay team, Kamorean Hayes (women's discus throw), Amanda Winslow (women's 1500m run), Jessica Parry (women's 1500m run), Nicholas Maedel (men's 5000m run) and David Forrester (men's 5000m run) failed to qualify in Saturday events.

The Florida State men's and women's track & field teams combine for six more NCAA Championships qualifiers Friday in Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Twenty-four hours after punching six tickets to the NCAA Track & Field Championships, Florida State earned six more final-site qualifiers Friday at day two of the East Regional in Bloomington, Ind.
Not surprisingly, FSU's speedy star sprinters, Maurice Mitchell and Ngoni Makusha, both blazed their way to Des Moines, Iowa by finishing second and third, respectively, in the men's 100m dash. Mitchell ran a 10.24 and Makusha ran a 10.26.
Also nabbing a spot at the final site was Brandon O'Connor. The sophomore speedster registered a 46.10 in the men's 400m dash to place sixth overall.
The men's pole vault saw Andrew Lahaye pull of an upset as the sophomore gave the Seminoles a huge boost by advancing to nationals. The Lake Brantley High School graduate vaulted to a personal-record-tying height of 17'0.75" to tie for first place.
On the women's side, Kim Williams achieved her second NCAA Championships berth in two days with a third-place finish in the women's triple jump with a distance of 43'7".
Michelle Jenije will also represent the Seminoles in the season finale as the Tallahassee native posted a 42'0.5" in the women's triple jump to qualify.
"It wasn't a real busy day for us but we had some important things we needed to accomplish," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "That was such a positive for us to have Andrew Lahaye advance. He really came through. We had to get the 100 finished and then get our 200 guys through. Brandon O'Connor had another impressive day."
In the men's 200m preliminaries, Mitchell advanced to the final day by running a stellar 20.60 in the sixth heat of the event to lead all sprinters. Brandon Byram had the second-best time on the day with a 20.80 to also advance to the semifinals.
Tremaine Grant (men's 110m hurdles), Kemar Hyman (men's 110m dash), Charles Clark (men's 200m dash), Brittany St. Louis (women's 400m dash), Violah Lagat (women's 800m run), Marecia Pemberton (women's 100m dash), Chelsea Whalen (women's javelin throw), Allyn Laughlin (women's shot put) and Kamorean Hayes (women's shot put) unfortunately failed to qualify for further competition for FSU in Friday's action.
"The big story is that Charles Clark pulled up lame at the end of the 200," Braman said. "That was a little bit of a blow to us; especially since he is eligible to run relays. But he has to be healthy and his hamstring has bothered him for a year. There was a little bit of hard luck for some of those other kids that wanted to have their shot at nationals. Kemar Hyman and Brittany St. Louis were both just one-tenth of a second from advancing. Violah Lagat missed it barely because with about 40 meters to go she tightened up and got passed.
"Allyn Laughlin really competed hard and even though she didn't advance we were very proud of her effort."
The final day of the opening regional round will be a busy one for Florida State.
The quartet of Teona Rodgers, St. Louis, Stephanie Simpson and Danielle Jeffery will team up for the women's 4x100m relay. David Ambler, Mitchell, Makusha and Byram will then do the same in the men's 4x100.
Hayes and Michael Putman will be featured in the women's and men's discus throw, too.
Amanda Winslow and Hannah Brooks will then compete in the women's 1500m run semifinals and Jessica Parry will be looking to qualify in the women's 5000m run. The men's 5000m run will feature Nicholas Maedel, David Forrester and Ciaran O'Lionaird.
Mitchell, Phillip Young, Byram and O'Connor will then conclude the meet by running in the men's 4x400m relay.
"Tomorrow the 4x100 is critical and the 4x400 is a challenge that we will face," Braman said. "We are not favored but we are good enough to make it happen. We just need a few more wildcards to come through tomorrow now. We need strong performances from our men's and women's distance runners."
Florida State opens the East Regional round of NCAA action with six final-site qualifiers and eight other regional advancers Thursday in Indiana.

BLOOMINGTON, IN - The Florida State men's and women's track & field teams (men No. 3/women No. 25) opened NCAA East Regional competition in Bloomington, Ind. Thursday with six Seminoles advancing to the NCAA Track & Field Championships and eight others qualifying for further first-round competition.
Junior Michael Putman was the first FSU student-athlete to advance to the final site. Putman qualified for a trip to Des Moines, Iowa by placing third in the men's shot put with a personal-record toss of 61'11.50".
Following Putman was senior star Kim Williams. The Kingston, Jamaica native will head to the final site and compete in the women's long jump after she achieved a qualifying distance of 20'7.25" on Thursday. Amy Harris will also represent the Seminoles at the NCAA Championships after she, too, qualified with a 20'6.25".
Also in the field events, Ngoni Makusha moved onto the final meet with a top distance of 26'4.8' in the men's long jump.
While the field athletes started the competition, the distance runners - specifically the men's 10000m runners - capped off the first day.
Ciaran O'Lionaird continued his torrid pace through his final year in the garnet and gold by advancing to Iowa with a 29:09.75 third-place finish in the men's 10000m run. Mike Fout was right on his teammates' heels in advancing with a 29:09.89.
"I felt like from a national standpoint we did everything that we had to do today," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Michael Putman was incredible in the shot put, which isn't even his top event; that's the discus. Kim Williams and Amy Harris were huge as well and Ngoni didn't even have to jump much. The 10,000-meter guys were excellent."
Hannah Brooks and Amanda Winslow were the first 'Noles to advance to the next round of competition on Indiana's campus by performing well in the women's 1500m run. Brooks ran a 4:26.16 while Winslow ran a 4:22.25 to move on to the semifinals on Saturday.
In the highly-anticipated men's 100m dash prelims, Maurice Mitchell, Kemar Hyman Makusha both ran their way to advancement. Mitchell placed second with a time of 10.20 and Makusha wasn't far behind in fourth with a 10.34. Hyman ran a 10.52. A few minutes prior, Marecia Pemberton also advanced to the semifinals with an 11.64 qualifying run in the women's 100m.
Brittany St. Louis then dashed her way to an advancing time of 54.65 in the women's 400m prelims. Like St. Louis, Brandon O'Connor sprinted his way into the semifinals of the men's 400m dash. O'Connor finished fifth in his race with a time of 46.90.
The next 'Nole to qualify for advancement was Violah Lagat. The junior distance runner posted a 2:07.92 in the women's 800m run.
In the men's 400m hurdles prelims, Tremaine Grant's time of 53.12 was not enough to move on to the second day. Also not qualifying was Alex Smyth, who posted a 3:52.67 in the men's 1500m run, and Darrin Gibson, who had a 1:51.87. Seth Proctor - despite having a personal-record time -- and Wes Rickman were unable to move on in the men's 10000m run and FSU's trio of three pole vaulters, Lizbeth Mabry, Callie Giffin and Lauren Giffin, also did not qualify.
"The 100-meter guys and Marecia Pemberton were very fast," Braman said. "Brandon O'Connor may have finished sixth but he was the fastest in his heat. The only setback we had was that we lost Paul Madzivire in the long jupm because he is dinged up. He's a wildcard that you hope gets points.
"Coach (Karen) Harvey's distance runners were three-for-three, which doesn't surprise anyone."

DES MOINES, IA - The Florida State men's and women's track & field teams began the first day of the NCAA Championships Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa with an impressive showing from its two fastest stars.
Competing at Drake University, the Seminoles' (men No. 3) performances on the opening day were highlighted by the impressive one-two qualifying finish by Ngoni Makusha and Maurice Mitchell in the men's 100m dash.
Mitchell kicked off the race with a top time of 10.16 in the first heat to qualify. Makusha then did the same by winning the third heat with a 10.13. The two speedsters produced their times despite a -1.1 and -1.0 headwind, respectively.
Florida's Jeff Demps - the favorite in the race - failed to qualify with a 10.40, boosting the 'Noles chances for a championship moving forward.
FSU started strong Wednesday in the team's first event of the day when the women's 4x100m relay placed seventh with a final-day qualifying time of 43.65. The team featured Amy Harris, Marecia Pemberton, Stephanie Simpson and Britany St. Louis.
Like the women, the men's 4x100m relay squad moved on to Saturday's final. Kemar Hyman, Makusha, Mitchell and Brandon Byram ran a season-best 38.75 to finish fourth.
"I think we had a really good first day," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Obviously that was big in the 100 and (Jeff) Demps not making it was big, too. We ran really well in the men's 4x100 and had safe handoffs. Coach (Ken) Harnden really controlled that well. The women killed it in the 4x100. And I think we can move up from that.
"We didn't drop any points on the ground and we still have three more days of this."
In the men's 400m dash, Brandon O'Connor achieved a new personal record with a 45.51 in his fourth-place finish in the first heat. Despite it being the top time of his two-year collegiate career, it was not enough to advance to the finals.
In her first of two events, Kim Williams, who has been battling a sore ankle and elected to only take three leaps, registered a top mark of 20'4.25" in the first heat of the women's long jump. That was enough to place 13th for the Seminoles as she will next be featured in her primary event, the triple jump, on Friday.
"She's a gamer," FSU jumps coach Dennis Nobles said. "She isn't 100 percent but she's a competitor and is focused on being ready for the triple jump."
Also competing in the women's long jump was Harris. She finished the event in 14th with a mark of 20'3.75".
The field events also saw Michael Putman register a ninth-place finish in the men's discus throw with a distance of 180'6".
In the men's pole vault, Andrew Lahaye finished 16th with a 16'10.75".
"We missed some opportunities but not for lack of effort," Braman said. "Only nine make the final in the discus and Mike (Putman) makes the final but just didn't move up and that's still competing well. Andrew Lahaye just missed his lifetime best and almost scored even though he wasn't picked to do anything. Brandon O'Connor had a great race it was just a tough heat. I am proud of them. It was tough for Amy (Harris) competing after the 4x100."
The second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships has been postponed due to inclement weather.

DES MOINES, IA -- Day two at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships was postponed late Thursday night. The missed events - including the conclusion of the men's long jump that Ngoni Makusha currently leads and the men's 10k that features Ciaran O'Lionaird and Mike Fout - will resume Friday.
Prior to the postponement, Maurice Mitchell, who moved on in the 100m dash and 4x100m relay, made it a perfect three-for-three in qualifying as he won the second heat of the men's 200m dash with a 20.39 on day two.
His teammate, Brandon Byram, then turned on the afterburners in the final 50 meters and advanced as well with a heat-three second-place finish on a time of 20.57.
Hannah Brooks was the lone Seminole to perform on the women's side and she didn't disappoint. Brooks advanced to Saturday's final with a fifth-place finish in the first heat on a time of 4:18.94.

DES MOINES, IA - Friday morning, Ngoni Makusha conducted an interview with CBS for the network's broadcast of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Friday evening, he broke records.
Lots of them.
And that's darn good television.
Just seconds after the feature story highlighting his journey from Zimbabwe to Tallahassee aired, Makusha - FSU's sprinting and jumping superstar - won the men's 100m dash national championship. It was his second title of the day after claiming the men's long jump crown earlier.
In doing so, Makusha became just the fourth athlete ever to win both of those titles at the NCAA Championships, joining track & field royalty Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens and Michigan's DeHart Hubbard.
His personal record 9.89 is the fastest 100m dash in the history of college track. It's also the meet and Drake Stadium record and is the fourth-fastest time in the entire world this year.
"My coach (Ken Hardnen) preaches to me every day to run my own race and never look to the side," Makusha said." He tells me to just stay patient and drive and kick towards the end. I did that and it paid off. I owe that to my coach."
Not to be forgotten, FSU's Maurice Mitchell earned a bronze medal in the 100m dash as well. For Mitchell, his incredible 10.00 is a personal record and is tied with FSU great Walter Dix for the 17th-fastest in the world this year.
Remarkably, the two 'Noles reeled off those times on a wet track in the rain.
In the long jump finals on Thursday before the conclusion of the event was postponed until Friday because of inclement weather, Makusha sent the crowd into a frenzy as his high-flying, wind-legal leap of 27'6.75" proved to be good enough to withstand the weather and some final-jump attempts on Friday from the nation's best jumpers.
Like his 100m dash, it was also a new personal record and broke the Drake Stadium mark set by Nike's Dwight Phillips last year. His mark is the fourth best in the history of the NCAA Outdoor Championships and is the second best in the world this year.
He also had a fifth jump of 27'5.25" that is the third best in the world in 2011. He now owns the Zimbabwean national records in the long jump, triple jump and 100m dash.
Makusha now boasts three outdoor long jump titles to his credit and one indoor long jupm crown that he earned earlier this year to go along with his first 100m championship.
"It certainly was a historic day with Ngoni doing what he did," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "The last few days I have been asked, 'Is he a long jumper or a sprinter?' And I always say long jumper. Well, that's an awfully fast long jumper. Three years ago with Walter Dix we weren't sure if we would see another decorated athlete like that. Well, here we are and he is just amazing in his first year doing both of these events together. It's just a great thing for FSU. He won it and he doesn't do the chest thump or is out there running around flaunting. He's doing it for his team."
Added Makusha: "This is just out of my imagination. To win both of these, I am just so blessed and thankful for my coaches and for Florida State. FSU has such a strong program and I want to always give back to FSU because it has given me so much."
Michael Putman generated three points for the Seminoles in the shot put, that -- coupled with the long jump and 100m dash outcomes -- has the FSU men's team in contention for a national championship heading into the final day.
Putman placed sixth with a personal-record throw of 62'0.25".
In addition to the dynamic duo of Makusha and Mitchell and the efforts of Putman, women's star Kim Williams capped off her impeccable career with a silver medal performance in the triple jump. Her top mark of 44'10.25" occurred before she passed on her final two attempts because of a lingering ankle injury sustained at regionals.
Michelle Jenije placed 17th in the women's triple jump with a leap of 41'1".
In the men's 10000m run, which was originally scheduled to be held Thursday night, Mike Fout finished in a time of 29:41.79 while Ciaran O'Lionaird ran a 32:06.21.
O'Lionaird will next compete in Saturday's 5000m run. Joining O'Lionaird on the last day will be Mitchell and Brandon Byram in the men's 200m dash final as well as the 4x100m relay final featuring Mitchell, Byram, Makusha and Kemar Hyman.
The Florida State men's track & field team finishes as the national runner-up by just one point Saturday at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

DES MOINES, IA - The Florida State men's track & field team finished as the national runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa, scoring 54 points while champion Texas A&M wound up with 55 points.
The entire meet came down to the final event of the day on Drake University's campus as the Aggies needed to win the men's 4x400m relay and did so. FSU boasted a lead entering the final day and registered 25 points to make the final moments all the more exciting.
The Seminoles finished with one more point than Florida's 53.
"In terms of the meet, we competed better than any school in America," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "We got as much as we humanly could while we were here. In the end, NCAA runner-up by one point is pretty special and that's extraordinarily special. We just need to find a way to be two points better."
Despite a near-mishap with the exchange on the first handoff, the Seminole men got a huge boost early in the day with a championship performance in the 4x100m relay. Kemar Hyman, Ngoni Makusha, Maurice Mitchell and Brandon Byram generated 10 points with a 38.77 performance.
Just as importantly, Florida did not finish the race and therefore did not accumulate any points after the Gators, Seminoles and Texas A&M all came in to the final day in the hunt for the final team title.
For Makusha, the outcome marked his third overall championship of the meet after winning the 100m dash and long jump the day before.
Mitchell, who placed third in the men's 100m dash a day earlier, then ran an incredible wind-aided 19.99 in the men's 200m dash to win the first individual title of his collegiate career. His mark is the fastest wind-aided time in the entire world this year.
In the same race, Byram ran a 20.41 to finish fourth and garner the 'Noles a total of 15 points and extend the team's point total to 54.
Unfortunately for the Seminoles, Ciaran O'Lionaird would then be unable to finish the men's 5k.
"We got some world-class performances from Ngoni Makusha and Maurice Mitchell," Braman said. "And all of our athletes competed well. I am just so proud of them. It was a great effort; we just didn't have some of the guys healthy like Brian Chibudu, Charles Clark and Gonzalo Barroilhet that have been national champions and runners-up. You have to have all of those scorers here to get those one or two points. As we go forward, we have to get better and continue to find ways to score in other ways like in the distance events.
"But we are going to be OK and we are going to be a contender for a long time to come."
In the women's events, the Seminoles' 4x100m relay team of Amy Harris, Marecia Pemberton, Stephanie Simpson and Britany St. Louis finished sixth with a time of 44.09.
Hannah Brooks then placed sixth in the women's 1500m run with a 4:16.81.
The FSU women's team finished the NCAA Championships in 20th with a total of 14 points.
"The women's 4x1 did a great job," Braman said. "I thought Hannah Brooks did a great job and Kim Williams still got second place even though she has had an ankle injury."
