An Opening Night Track Record.

Cherry-Bronson crushes own mark; Harris wins high jump.

Jan. 11, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Returning to the site of her school-record performance in the weight throw last season, Florida State redshirt junior Briana Cherry-Bronson left little doubt that she can be an All-American contender this indoor season for the Seminoles.

Cherry-Bronson shattered her own school record with a toss of 20.24 meters (66-5) in the season-opening UAB Blazer Invite at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena Friday night. The Naples, Fla. native eclipsed her previous record (19.06m/62-6.50) by nearly four feet on the fifth of six throws; good for a runner-up finish. Her mark would have been good for 10th place at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Senior Lakitta Johnson was equally impressive, bettering her previous personal best with a throw of 19.24m (63-1), which was good for a fourth-place finish. Johnson came into the meet ranked fourth all-time among Seminoles (17.95m/58-10.75) and departed with the second-best mark in school history, which also eclipsed the previous school record.

Their performances continued a trend under second-year throws coach Dorian Scott, whose charges now litter the top 10 lists after just one full season on staff.

James Harris delivered the Seminoles their first win of the indoor season as the senior All-American captured the high jump with a leap of 2.23 meters (7-3.75); a mark that should earn him a qualifying spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

On the women's side, senior Elizabeth Ichite placed fourth in the seldom-contested 300-meter dash (38.59), right behind Kala Funderburk (38.48), a transfer to FSU from Memphis who competed unattached.

Freshman sprint standout Kali Davis-White successfully navigated her FSU debut by advancing to Saturday's final of the 60-meter dash. Davis-White checked in with the ninth-fastest time (7.46) in Seminole history in the section B preliminary round. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. star was the fastest collegian in her section and placed third overall.

Senior Marecia Pemberton will join her first-year teammate in the section B finals after logging a preliminary round time of 7.55.

In the women's pole vault, freshman Madison Schmidt registered the 10th-best performance in school history in her debut by clearing 3.65 meters (11-11.75). She matched her sophomore teammates Hannah Acton and Karly Jackson as the trio tied for 10th place.

Among the other newcomers to debut in garnet & gold, senior transfer Jonathan Reid made the most of his lone mark in the triple jump (14.78m/48-6) to place fourth overall.

Solid Opening Act.

Men's 4x400, Freeman and throwers show way for track 'Noles.

Jan. 11, 2014

BIRMINGHAM, AL - There's nothing quite like a competitive 4x400 relay race to bring a meet to a close and rivals Florida State and Florida delivered just that Saturday in the final event of UAB Blazer Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena.

The matchup of relay teams returning at least three legs from last year's first- and third-place finishes at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet did not disappoint, despite the fact that rival Florida (3:06.11) edged the Seminole quartet of Alonzo Russell, Michael Cherry, Dentarius Locke and James Harris (3:07.7).

"It was the way an indoor meet should end," Florida State coach Bob Braman said.

Cherry, a freshman competing in his first meet (and event), matched Harris for the fastest relay split (46.1) as the Seminoles registered the No. 8 time in school history, a mark that should also qualify the `Noles for the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships.

The women's 4x400 relay produced the same outcome, as the Seminole quartet of Elizabeth Ichite, Marsha Ariol, Sydnee Over and Sarah Chandler ran a respectable season-opening time of 3:46.02, which trailed only Florida.

There were several strong performances on the final day of competition, including more success for the Seminoles' throwers. Senior Chelsea Whalen and redshirt freshman Kellion Knibb registered indoor career-best marks in the shot put to place third and fourth, respectively. Whalen, FSU's outdoor school record-holder, marginally improved her previous indoor best with a third-place throw of 15.83 meters (51-11.25). Knibb, who sat out the indoor season last year and changed her technique from rotational to glide, came up with an all-conditions best mark of 15.56m (51-0.75).

Freshmen Chadrick DaCosta and Austin Droogsmaeach advanced to the finals of the men's shot put in their first collegiate action. DaCosta recorded a third-place finish with a mark of 16.25 meters (53-3.75), while Droogsma placed ninth (14.80m/48-6.75).

Those throws came just one day after Briana Cherry-Bronson destroyed her own school record in the weight throw and Lakitta Johnson rocketed from fourth to second on the all-time list.

Sophomore Der'Renae Freeman got the day started on the right foot for the Seminoles, soaring to a career-best of 6.21 meters (20-4.50) in the long jump to lock down a third-place finish. The Orlando native's breakthrough leap came on her sixth and final attempt. Three of her four legal jumps exceeded her previous indoor career-best (5.94). She now owns the seventh-best indoor mark in Seminole history.

In the Section B 60-meter dash finals, freshman Kali Davis-White and senior Marecia Pemberton raced to the wire in third and fifth-place, respectively. Davis-White (7.47) was just off her qualifying time and trailed only a pair of post-collegiate athletes. Pemberton (7.53) improved her preliminary round time by .02.

In other field event action, Grete Sadeiko's return from reconstructive ACL surgery in April went well as she cleared 1.69 meters (5-6.50) in the high jump to place sixth.

"As far as rust-busters go, it was a typical one for us," Braman said, after getting the first competitive glimpse of his team. "We saw some things that should excite you."

Competing unattached, transfer Kala Funderburk's two-lap trip around the Birmingham Crossplex track in 56.30 was good for a sixth-place finish.

Former Seminole and 2011 Bowerman Award winner Ngoni Makusha turned in the most impressive performance of the day, winning the long jump with a leap of 8.10m (26-7). It was his best mark since suffering a torn Achilles tendon in the spring of 2012.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Florida State women's distance crew, led by event winners Georgia Peel and Colleen Quigley, paved the way for the Seminoles Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena.

Peel and Quigley set Auburn Invitational meet records in the mile (4:45.02) and 3000 meters (9:18.85), respectively, as the distance teams - both women and men - opened up their indoor track & field seasons.

"We were very similar to last weekend, where most of the people were competing in their first competition of the year," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "It was good to get out there on the oval. Basically we had some good openers and set the table."

As has been the case throughout women's distance coach Karen Harvey's tenure, the Seminoles were the dominant force against a field which included a host of SEC schools, featuring Vanderbilt, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi.

With Peel, a sophomore, setting the pace in a time that currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division I, the Seminoles also received a third-place finish from Hannah Walker (4:48.20) and a seventh-place showing by Pippa Woolven (4:53.80). Both of those marks are personal-best for the junior transfers from the University of Birmingham in the UK. Walker's time is currently the 12th-fastest in Division I.

Quigley, a junior and one of the top distance runners in the country, registered the nation's fourth-best time over 3000 meters. She was followed closely by redshirt sophomore Linden Hall, who finished third in 9:22.37. Hall's time currently ranks sixth-fastest in Division I and is good for No. 8 on FSU's all-time list.

"It was evident today that our group really did their homework in December," Harvey said. "Colleen and Georgia had some really nice wins and we also saw a bunch of personal-bests."

A pair of freshmen shot putters led the Florida State men's team. In just their second meet, Austin Droogsma and Chadrick DaCosta advanced to the final and finished seventh and eighth respectively, each recording new career-bests. Droogsma uncorked the 11th-best indoor throw in FSU history at 16.72 meters (54-10.25), while DaCosta checked in with the 13th-best mark (16.61m/54-6).

"That was a great job for the throwers," Braman said. "They definitely led the way along with the women's distance group and the good news is those guys are freshmen."

A pair of sophomores turned in the top performances among Seminole middle-distance runners. Otniel Teixeira, a transfer from USF, placed ninth in his first collegiate mile race (4:11.02). Jacob Burton, who was eighth as a freshman at the ACC Indoor Championships in the 800, opened his second season of competition by placing 10th in 1:53.43. That time was one second faster than he ran a year ago in his collegiate debut in the same meet.

"Otniel and Burton did a pretty good job," said Braman, who is already looking ahead. "In two weeks we'll have a full complement of kids going to Arkansas for the Razorback Invitational and have a much better gauge for where we are heading into the conference."

New Records In New Mexico.

Cherry-Bronson, Harris lead way for track 'Noles on opening night.

Jan. 25, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Two new school records and a handful of personal-best performances highlighted Florida State's opening night of action at the Cherry & Silver Invitational.

Redshirt junior Briana Cherry-Bronson not only supplied the Seminoles their lone victory of the night at the Albuquerque Convention Center, but she obliterated her own school record in the weight throw with a winning mark of 20.98 meters (68-10).

"It was a huge step," Cherry-Bronson said, after twice out-distancing her old school record of 20.24 meters . "I feel like I can only go up from here. My goal is (qualifying for) Indoor Nationals and I'm talking to my coaches and looking at the rankings and it looks like my goal just might be reached."

With her winning mark, Cherry-Bronson climbed from 11th to fifth in the NCAA Division I rankings, as she continues her pursuit for one of a top-16 mark which would assure a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships back here in March.

Cherry-Bronson's victory came against a strong group of throwers, which made her even more achievement even more noteworthy. She advanced to the finals - along with teammate Lakitta Johnson - with a career-best mark of 20.44, then ripped off her new record throw with the competition bearing down.

It was a classic case of rising to the occasion, not only for the win, but the first win of any kind since high school.

"It feels really good to win," she said. "I was speechless. I don't know how many times I looked at the clipboard and said, `Did I actually win? Did this actually happen?' Words can't explain how great it feels.

"A year ago I was just nervous throughout the whole (competition). There was no confidence, it was just, `What am I doing?' Now I know what it feels like and once it comes off my hand it's going to be a good throw. It's just more experience. The more experience, the better."

Johnson, who came into the meet with ranked No. 2 in school history, finished fifth with a new personal-best as well (19.44m/63-9.50).

The highlights didn't stop there. Senior James Harris was involved in one of the most compelling competitions of the night when he locked horns with Arizona's Nick Ross in the high jump. The duo came into the meet ranked 1-2 in Division and didn't disappoint, with Harris matching Ross bar-for-bar through 2.27 meters (7-5.25), which broke his own Florida State record.

Ross, the 2012 NCAA Indoor champion, prevailed by clearing 2.31 in what will surely be a prelude to a rematch at the championship meet in six weeks.

Both the men and women advanced two to the finals in the long jump, where sophomore Der'Renae Freeman climbed to a second-place finish on her sixth and final attempt by soaring a career-best 6.24m (20-5.75). Freeman is currently ranked fifth nationally. Maryke Brits placed sixth with a leap of 5.94m (19-6).

Not to be outdone, Paul Madzivire and Jalen Ramsey finished second and third in the men's long jump, separated by only three-quarters of an inch. Madzivire registered a season-best mark of 7.61 meters (24-11.75), while Ramsey - in his first competition since helping the `Noles to the BCS National Championship in football - soared 7.59m (24-11). They depart the meet ranked seventh and eighth nationally. Ramsey's first meet also produced the No. 10 indoor long jump mark in FSU history.

On the women's distance side, juniors Hannah Walker and Pippa Woolven authored a 1-2 finish in the 3000-meter run. Walker pulled away to cross the finish in 9:34.63, which converts to 9:20.48 at sea level and ranks No. 7 nationally and also No. 7 on FSU's all-time list. Woolven finished in 9:40.88 (9:26.58 converted), which ranks as the 11th-best mark in school history.

Junior Markindey Sineus added the final personal-best mark of the night for the `Noles in the men's 35-pound weight throw with the No. 3 throw in school history (18.80m/61-8.25). Grete Sadeiko continued her comeback from knee surgery with a fourth-place finish and a new personal-best in the high jump (1.73m/5-8).

The abundance of records and PRs sent FSU coach Bob Braman away from the first day feeling pretty good.

"I felt like we had as good a day at this time of year as any time ever," Braman said. "The throwers were huge and Der'Renae goes 6.24 on her last jump. James Harris sets a school record in the high jump and the distance girls - Hannah and Pippa - if you convert their times, both set new PRs.

"It was a great first day at the Cherry & Silver and we've got a lot of great opportunities tomorrow."

"We're usually a closing a team that starts looking like a Florida State outdoor team in March. I don't know that we've looked like the Florida State we looked like today in January since I've been the head coach."

The highlights were abundant and crossed all event areas.

Senior Dentarius Locke overcame a slight miss-step out of the blocks to finish second in his 60-meter dash season debut, blazing through the finish line in 6.56, which converts to 6.58 at nearly 5,000-feet. Locke was nipped at the finish by Houston's Cameron Burrell (6.55) in the duel between the nation's second- and third-fastest short sprinters to date.

"I know what I did wrong and if I would have fixed it, where I would have been," Locke said. "I have another five to six weeks until NCAA Indoors to make sure I'm right where I need to be.

"Last year I opened up 6.67 in a final and this year I opened up 6.58 with the .02 added and that was my second-fastest time last year. To open up 6.58 I'm getting to be where I need to be. ... To drop something that fast this early, I'm definitely blessed and happy with that."

Like Locke, senior Marecia Pemberton was edged by USC's Jessica Davis at the finish by .01 in the women's 60-meter dash, clocking a 7.37 (7.39) for second place. It was arguably her finest performance in a final since undergoing hip surgery in 2011.

Seniors James Harris and Alonzo Russell, along with freshman Michael Cherry, led a 1-2-4 showing in the 400-meter dash, with three of the top six indoor times in school history. Harris won his heat, despite a lot of contact, in 46.43 (46.54, altitude conversion) with the second-fastest mark by a Seminole, with Russell's 46.44 (46.55) ranking third. Cherry landed the No. 6 mark in his first collegiate 400 at 46.91 (47.02). Harris and Russell rank eighth and ninth nationally.

The Seminole women also excelled in the 400, with sophomore Sage Watson and senior Elizabeth Ichite placing second and fourth overall, each with new personal-bests. Watson finished in 53.42 (53.53), with Ichite crossing in 54.07 (54.18) - marks which rank second and fourth on FSU's all-time list. Watson's time stands eighth among Division I runners to date, while Ichite ranks 17th.

"It felt good for an opener," Watson said, down-playing a performance that obliterated her previous best indoor 400 of 54.36. "I didn't want to get boxed in though. I think I could have run a lot faster, but just getting back on the track and running, you've got to get used to it. .. I'm excited, but I know I should be right where I am right now."

Associate head coach Ken Harnden, who oversees the sprinters, was quite pleased with the group as a whole.

"For Sage to come out and PR by a second in the first race out of the hole, I'm very happy," Harnden said. "I feel like she's starting to trust the training and believe in the program. For Liz, I'm going to say that's a half-a-second PR and she didn't execute the race quite the way we talked about it.

"On the men's side, James Harris - if they weren't boxing out there he might have run 45 seconds. He's fit, in shape, experienced and it is showing. He's leading really well. Alonzo Russell, that's just a huge jump so I'm really excited about that. He really executed the race plan we talked about. ... Michael Cherry had kind of freshman race, but was .04 off his PR so I'll take it. They're right where we need them to be."

As for his short sprinters, he was equally encouraged.

"Marecia Pemberton had a big breakthrough today to come back from the hip surgery and come back to where she feels she can compete," he said. "Locke ran out of his mind, even though he stumbled on the third step."

Not to be overlooked, freshmen John Franklin III (6.84) and Cejhae Greene(6.87) registered the 12th and 13th-fastest 60-meter dash times in the preliminary rounds in their collegiate debuts.

Junior transfer Jonathan Reid highlighted another strong day in the field events, delivering the top-ranked triple jump mark en route to his victory. The former Alabama All-American registered a winning leap of 16.25 meters (53-3.75) - the third-best mark in program history - in just his second meet with the `Noles.

Chelsea Whalen and Kellion Knibb continued to make strides in the shot put, each registering personal-best marks against a strong field. Whalen finished second with a throw of 16.08 meters (51-9.25) as she continues her chase for the school record. Knibb was fourth at 16.01 (52-6.50) with the fourth-best indoor throw in Seminole history. The pair currently stand 18th and 22nd nationally in pursuit of a top-16 marks and NCAA Indoor Championship berths.

Izehi Ileso turned in her best triple jump mark as a Seminole to place fourth in 12.74 meters (41-9.75), which ranks No. 9 on FSU's top 10 list.

Sophomore Karly Jackson won her flight of the pole vault with a career-best clearance of 3.87 meters (12-8.25), which ties her with teammate Hannah Acton for fourth all-time by a Seminole. Acton also matched her career-best.

Not to be overlooked, the FSU women's distance team was a dominant force on the track, beginning with the mile run where the Seminoles grabbed four of the top five finishing spots - and four of the top 11 marks nationally.

Sophomore Georgia Peel won the race with an altitude-adjusted time of 4:38.41 - the fastest mark of the 2014 indoor season to date - and was followed closely across the finish line by Colleen Quigley (4:38.72). Linden Hall (4:42.81) was fourth and Hannah Walker (4:44.49) fifth. They show up in the Division I event rankings at 1-3-7-11.

Quigley came back later to claim the 800-meter win in 2:10.56, with Hall (2:12.37) and Peel (2:13.60) third and fourth.

"Our group effort was really good," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "We didn't get a lot of super heavy competition here, but I liked how my girls responded to losing a pacer to the mile at the last second and helping each other as a team.

"I'm so glad we came here and doubled to feel what it's going to be like to be at nationals. I think the double even gives us more of the adaption to this air and this track. We got everything done we needed to get done. Some of the girls are ahead of where I thought they were. We're leaving pretty happy."

So is Braman.

"It's unbelievable," Braman said, assessing the body of work over the two-day meet. "I'm a little afraid of how good we were, but I'm excited as to where we could be considering the repetitions we're done, the number of meets we've run and the sharpening that has not been done.

"Each group has its own excitement right now ... It's all rolling right now. It's exciting from the team aspect."

Jackson, Whalen Shine.

FSU women, men in third after Day 1 at Razorback Invitational.

Jan. 31, 2014

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Karly Jackson soared to new heights, while Chelsea Whalen bombed one throw deep, highlighting what could best be described as an otherwise flat performance by the Florida State track & field teams on the opening day of the Razorback Invitational.

Jackson became just the third Florida State woman to clear 13 feet in the pole vault indoors when she carried the crossbar on her third and final attempt at 3.97 meters (13-0.25) Friday night at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The redshirt sophomore from Orlando moved into third place on the Seminoles' all-time list, trailing only Lacy Janson and Liz Mabry.

Her effort was good for a fourth-place finish against a solid field made up of nine nationally-ranked schools.

Whalen delivered the Seminole women one of two victories - Der'Renae Freeman also won the long jump - by eclipsing teammate Kellion Knibb on her sixth and final throw of the night. Not only did the senior from Canada come up with a winner, she nearly broke the school record. Her toss of 16.27 meters (53-4.50) left her exactly one inch shy of Kamorean Hayes' school mark (16.29m/53-5.50), set in 2008.

"Coach [Dorian Scott] and I were talking about just about being patient and focusing on our weekly goal," Whalen said. "I just focused on what I wasn't doing, what I had to do and it just came out."

Her winning throw followed four consecutive fouls and came just after Knibb surged into the lead with her would-be runner-up mark of 15.82 meters.

"Today it was basically just Knibb and I in the competition," Whalen said. "When she hit that last one to bump ahead it just gave me a challenge and I said, `OK, I'm going to go after that challenge.' It was hard, but I feel like it's a common occurrence for me - last throw-best throw.

"I definitely feel like there's more there."

While Whalen has designs on adding the indoor record to her outdoor mark, set last year, she is also focused on gaining a trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships for the first time in her career.

"To me, the record is just a number," she added. "I'm more concerned about making the NCAA [Championship]. In order to get to the NCAA I'm going to have to get the record."

Whalen moved up to No. 17 in the current national rankings, but only the top 16 throwers will advance to the championship.

Among other scoring performances by the Seminoles, redshirt freshman Grete Sadeiko finished sixth in the pentathlon in her first full five-event competition since suffering a knee injury last season. The native Estonian finished with 3,656 points, while junior teammate Alejandra Martinez - buoyed by five new personal-bests - finished eighth with 3,451 points. Those two totals rank second and third in FSU history. Maryke Brits' pentathlon debut produced 3,076 points, which ranks eight all-time among `Noles.

Marecia Pemberton (7.47), Der'Renae Freeman (7.60) and Anne Zagre (7.65) all advanced to Saturday's semifinal rounds of the 60-meter dash.

On the men's side, senior Dentarius Locke had the fastest time in the qualifying rounds of the 60-meter dash (6.70), while freshman Cejhae Greene (6.85) also advanced to the semifinals.

Locke placed four in a loaded 200-meter field, finishing off his season debut in the event in 21.03,, which is just .01 off his indoor personal best with the Seminoles.

Freshmen Chadrick DaCosta (15.56m/54-4) and Austin Droogsma (15.21/49-11) placed third and sixth, respectively, in the shot put. Stefan Brits (7.34m/24-1) and Paul Madzivire (7.31/23-11.75) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump.

FSU also sent a makeshift distance medley relay team out for the first time this season and the team of Kemper Morton, Ricardo Roy, Otniel Teixeira and Bryce Kelley placed fifth in 10:04.15, which stands as the ninth-fastest mark in school history.

After one day of competition the Florida State men's and women's teams sit in third place in the team scoring. The 17th-ranked Seminole women have scored 43.5 points through eight events and trail No. 7 Arkansas (84) and No. 3 Texas A&M (54). Fourth-ranked Florida is in fourth place with 37 points.

FSU's sixth-ranked men have 27.5 points and are chasing No. 1 Arkansas (63.5) and No. 5 Texas A&M (52.5). The second-ranked Florida men are in fifth with 25 points.

Harris, Cherry Show Way.

Seminole 400-meter specialists shine at Razorback Invitational.

Feb. 1, 2014

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - James Harris led an exceptional showing by Florida State's 400-meter contingent with a new personal-best Saturday at the Razorback Invitational, which will all but secure him a place at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships next month.

Against a star-studded 400-meter field, Harris produced the nation's fifth-fastest time and a lifetime indoor best of 46.20 to finish third behind the top two men in the country - Texas A&M's Deon Lendore (45.47 ) and Florida's Arman Hall (45.63). As an added bonus, Harris also took over the Atlantic Coast Conference lead after entering the meet ranked third.

"Obviously James got it done and the other 400-meter guys got closer," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "Michael Cherry was really impressive today. The 400-meter men and women had the better turnaround."

This time last year, Cherry was the No. 1 400-meter high school runner in the country. Following his dramatic heat victory Saturday, he is now the owner of a new personal-best (46.57) and holds the distinction of being the nation's top freshman at 400 meters with his No. 14 national ranking. The breakout performance vaulted the Chesapeake, Va. native to No. 4 on Florida State's all-time list.

After banner individual performances, Harris and Cherry teamed with Alonzo Russell and Ricardo Roy - who was filling in for 2013 All-American Dentarius Locke - to produce a very solid fourth-place 4x400 relay finish in 3:07.87. That mark is shy of the Seminoles season-best time of 3:07.70 with Locke in the lineup, which remains the sixth-best mark among Division I teams.

Harris and Cherry backed up their individual efforts with relay splits of 45.76 and 46.01, respectively.

On the women's side, neither Sage Watson or Elizabeth Ichite were able to duplicate their breakthrough 400-meter marks set a week ago at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., but they still turned in stellar efforts. Watson placed third in 53.85 and Ichite was fifth in 54.51.

Ichite came back later to lead off FSU's 4x400 relay to a season-best time of 3:43.55 with a sizzling 53.99 split from the gun. Senior Marsha Ariol kept the `Noles in the hunt with the two fastest teams in the world thus far - Texas A&M and Florida - with a huge personal-best second leg split of 55.08. Sydnee Over and Sarah Chandler finished off the quartet's fourth-place finish. Even more encouraging, the `Noles rolled out their season-best time with Watson on the sidelines.

"The women's 4x400, you can see the pieces coming together," Braman said. "The same for the men's 4x400. We've got two weeks to get ready for the Tyson Invitational, which will have electricity unlimited in that arena."

Beyond the success of the long sprinters, Anne Zagre made her season debut with the Seminole and left a favorable impression, finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.38. The 2012 Belgian Olympian had company in the finals as freshman Nicole Setterington recorded a lifetime-best mark of 8.63 to place fourth.

"It was good to have Anne Zagre back out there and you can see she is someone who is going to make it (to NCAA's)," Braman added. "We've got to get out jumpers healthy. They're a little dinged up and probably had the toughest double coming back. We need to get them back to health, but there's a lot of promise there."

Overall, however, the Seminoles had a difficult time mustering the same kind of performance they turned in a week earlier.

"Going back to the New Mexico you're looking at a nine-day span and you're covering all of that travel," Braman said. "We competed hard but we had some tired horses, for sure. It was a tough turnaround for the kids that did both meets.

"At the same time we're getting some conference marks. That was a 20-second PR for Bryant Blahnik (in the 3000). It was a PR for Otniel Teixeira (in the mile)."

In a unique twist, the Razorback Invitational - which included nine nationally ranked programs - included team for the first time. The Florida State women, which entered the meet ranked No. 17 nationally, finished fourth with 83.5 points, trailing No. 7 Arkansas (151), No. 3 Texas A&M (146) and No. 4 Florida (84).

On the men's side, the sixth-ranked Seminoles placed sixth with 56.5 points. Top-ranked Arkansas was the runaway winner with 153.5 points, followed by No. 5 Texas A&M (116.5), No. 2 Florida (90), No. 10 Oklahoma State (73) and Oklahoma, which finished with 57.5.

"I was enjoying it while we were beating people," Braman said of the scoring format. " It was kind of interesting because on the men's side you were running against Nos. 1, 2 and 3, and we matched up with third place most of the meet.

"I do like the scoring format. ... It does give you that mindset that, `Hey, in a month we're running for scores.'"

A Record For Walker.

New mark set in women's 5000; women's DMR sets meet record at Husky.

Feb. 14, 2014

FAYETTEVILLE, AR and SEATTLE, WA - With strong groups competing at both the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., the Florida State indoor track & field teams made some noise Friday.

The loudest efforts came from the Dempsey Track on the campus at the University of Washington, where Hannah Walker's first collegiate 5000-meter race with the Seminoles produced a new school record. Walker paced the loaded invitational field from the start and, despite getting shuffled back in the late stages, recorded a fourth-place finish in 15:58.15.

A transfer from the University of Birmingham in the UK, Walker wiped former Seminole All-American Vicky Gill's 10-year old mark of 16:00.62 from the record books.

"Hannah was the workhorse for a large field of racers," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "Someone needed to push the pace and Hannah took it on. The goal was sub-16 and she got a school record, too. The only thing that's frustrating is that we hope the time holds up as a qualifier for NCAA's, but you can't fault her effort either way."

Only the top 16 times in each event qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and Walker's mark stood 11th at the end of the night.

"The first lap was really slow, so then I just took it on and more or less hit the paces I was supposed to, but just had no help," Walker said. "I'm pleased to go under 16 minutes and get the school record, but I feel I'm definitely capable of going faster in a better race."

The FSU women's distance medley relay team almost assuredly posted an NCAA Championship-qualifying mark en route to victory Friday night at the Husky Classic. The team of Linden Hall, Elizabeth Ichite, Georgia Peel and Colleen Quigley smashed the meet record with a winning time of 11:01.59, which ranks as the third-fastest in Seminole history. It currently ranks as the No. 6 mark in Division I this season, with the top 12 relay teams qualifying for the championship meet on time.

"The DMR team worked hard and pushed as hard as they could on a solo effort," said Harvey, whose team won the race by a whopping 40 seconds. "They are better racers than time trial runners. This is a good problem if the time holds up as an NCAA qualifier. This team has the ability to be much, much better."

Hall led off the race with a 1200-meter leg in 3:21 and was followed by Ichite's 53-second 400. Peel ran 2:10 for 800 meters and Quigley capped off the DRM with a 4:36 1600-meter leg.

Bryant Blahnik joined newcomer Glen Yarham in the men's 5000-meter race and the duo produced the eighth and ninth best times on FSU's top 10 indoor list, finishing in 14:18.45 and 14:23.83, respectively, to finish 16th and 17th.

At the Tyson Invitational, the Seminoles scored some impressive performances against stout competition.

Dentarius Locke ran 6.61 in the 60-meter finals to play second to Houston's Cameron Burrell, stringing together a pair of solid qualifying round (6.63 and 6.70). On the women's side, senior Marecia Pemberton posted her fastest time since 2012 in the 60-meter finals (7.36), to place third. Pemberton's three race series included marks of 7.39 and 7.40 in the preliminary rounds.

The lone victory by the Seminoles on the opening day of the Tyson Invitational was produced by junior Briana Cherry-Bronson, who claimed the weight throw with a mark of 20.85m (68-5). Teammate Lakitta Johnson (18.98) was eighth.

In the men's and women's championship division of the long jump, sophomore Der'Renae Freeman placed fourth by soaring 6.12 meters (20-1). Freshman Jalen Ramsey was seventh on the men's side with a six-jump best mark of 7.52 meters (24-8.25).

Sophomore Otniel Teixeira competed in the championship section of the 800-meter and delivered his all-time best of 1:50.52 to place sixth overall with his heat victory. It was the fifth-fastest indoor time in Florida State history.

"Otniel led start-to-finish in the second heat of the championship 800," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "That's a pretty good win for him and an all-conditions PR."

Among other noteworthy performances, senior Alonzo Russell placed fifth in the 400-meter dash (46.57) and was just .02 off his lifetime best mark. Karly Jackson earned a share of the college division pole vault title clearing 3.90 meters (12-9.50).

Overall, the Seminoles competing at the Randal Tyson Track Complex failed to improve on their national standings, but Saturday will provide another set of opportunities. The men's 4x400 relay will be one of the spotlight events for the `Noles, along with Chelsea Whalen and Kellion Knibb in the shot put, and James Harris in the high jump.

"Conference wise we keep moving forward," said Braman. "Nationally, it keeps getting harder and harder."

Quigley, Hall Shine.

Milers excel in Seattle; Reid soars in Arkansas for 'Noles.

FAYETTEVILLE, AR and SEATTLE, WA - As encore performances go, Florida State's Colleen Quigley and Linden Hall were outstanding Saturday in the invitational mile section of the Husky Classic on the University of Washington campus.

Less than 24 hours after helping the FSU women's distance medley relay team post a meet-record and NCAA Championship-worthy performance (11:01.59), Quigley and Hall posted career-best marks against a field of touted collegians and professionals. Their performances were all the more impressive because they came out of the second - and allegedly slower - of two invitational heats, without the benefit of pace-setter.

Quigley won the heat in 4:35.38, more than two seconds faster than her previous best, and finished second overall on time as the fastest collegian in the field. The sophomore's time in the fourth-fastest in FSU history indoors and currently the No. 3 time in NCAA Division I. Hall pared more than four seconds off her previous-best time, placing ninth overall in 4:38.50. She was the fifth among collegians in the field.

"We were supposed to have a pacer from Oregon up until three minutes before the gun was supposed to go off," Quigley said. "She didn't end up running, so Linden and Vicky Fouhy from Virginia got out quick.

"Linden did a lot of the work. I was really grateful for her. Linden led up until about a lap to go. I could feel some people chasing me, like they were on my back, and I could see them up on me on the Jumbotron."

Still, she held on for the win, with Hall in close pursuit.

Pippa Woolven, working alongside teammate Hannah Walker in the invitational 3000, recorded a new personal-best in 9:24.08 to place 14th in a field of 37.

In the men's 3000-meter invitational, senior Jakub Zivec made his first competitive appearance since cross country season, and registered a respectable rust-busting time of 8:16.62.

While the distance crew was out west, the balance of the Seminoles were competing at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Junior transfer Jonathan Reid turned in the highlight performance of the day, soaring to a career-best triple jump mark of 16.32 meters (53-6.50). While the effort was good for only third place against a stacked field, Reid maintained his standing as the No. 2 performer in Division I this season.

The Florida State men's 4x400 relay team, despite the precautionary absence of freshman standout Michael Cherry, put together its fastest time of the season with a 3:07.26. James Harris' third leg split of 44.98 - the fastest of the day by any athlete - keyed the comeback from a shaky start.

There were a number of other solid performances by the Seminoles, including new personal-best marks in the shot put by junior Lakitta Johnson (14.90m/48-10.75), which moved her to No. 7 all-time at FSU. Harris was the runner-up in the high jump, clearing 2.24 (7-4.25).

All in all, it was a solid performance by the Seminoles, many of whom were forced to bus to Arkansas due to flight cancellations.

Sadeiko fifth, but FSU women chasing at ACC Indoor Championships.

Feb. 27, 2014

CLEMSON, SC - The Florida State women's track & field team didn't get off to the start it hoped for on the opening day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championship, managing just four points following the completion of the pentathlon and distance medley relay.

Grete Sadeiko finished fifth in the pentathlon, breaking the Florida State school record in the five-event competition with 3,776 points, which was previously held by Deanna Lane (3,751, 2005).

A shuffle of the distance medley relay lineup, in an effort to maximize points later in the meet, failed to yield a single point despite an eighth-place finish in the fast heat (11:36.45). FSU's quartet of Georgia Peel, Elizabeth Ichite, Sydnee Over and Hannah Walker was bumped to ninth place by Boston College, which won the first section and ultimately finished sixth.

While the Seminole men won't get their competition started until Friday, the women will begin day two of the three-day affair tied for seventh. Duke leads with 23 points, followed by North Carolina (12), Maryland (10) and Notre Dame (8) with 15 events remaining.

"We left some points out there in the last hour," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "For as hard as we competed but didn't get the result we wanted, I feel like it sent a message: `Bring your best or you're not going to get points.'

"This conference is tough. This is probably the best message to our women's team. `Hey, I don't care what the scoreboard says, we're going to have to come in here and fight to beat Notre Dame, Carolina, Duke and who knows who.' This is not a meet anymore - with 15 teams - that somebody's points are in the bag."

Entering the final event of the women's heptathlon, Sadeiko and Alejandra Martinez were sitting in third and eighth place, respectively, and positioned to contribute seven team points to the cause. The 800-meter final, however, dramatically altered the final standings as North Carolina's Emily Godwin and Wake Forest's Alyssa Thompson used strong performances to push past Sadeiko, while Virginia's Anna Finger rode a fourth-place overall finish to climb from 11th to eight place, edging Martinez for the final scoring spot.

Martinez finished with a career-best 3,528, which ranks third in FSU history, after posting personal-best performances in four of five events.

The pentathlon competition at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Facility began with the 60-meter hurdles, where both Sadeiko (8.74) and Martinez (9.02) posted collegiate-best times. Sadeiko's time was second-fastest in the field of 22, trailing only eventual champion Thea LaFond of Maryland. Martinez followed up with a new personal-best in the high jump (1.55m/5-1).

Sadeiko moved into the bronze medal position with a 600-point shot put performance (11.08m/36-4.25), and held that spot with the fifth-best long jump in the field (5.54m/18-2.25). Martinez was right behind her teammate after an all-time best mark of 5.53m (18-1.75) moved her from 13th to eighth-place overall, entering the 800-meter finale.

With a narrow two-point lead over Wake Forest's Erika Martin for the final spot, Martinez kicked past the Demon Deacon over the final 50 meters to post a career-best time of 2:28.63, seemingly enough to earn the eighth-place point. Sadeiko, who had finished no worse than fifth overall in any of the previous four events, came home 13th in the 800.

"Our pentathletes did a good job, with two PRs," Braman said. "I thought Grete could be top-five and she ended up fifth. Alejandra was seeded 11th and not expected to score and finished ninth with four personal-bests.

"I kind of felt like we could be third or fourth in the distance medley because we didn't run our top two legs [Linden Hall and Colleen Quigley]."

Titles Within Grasp.

Late surge puts FSU women in lead, men second at ACC Indoor.

Feb. 28, 2014

CLEMSON, SC - Der'Renae Freeman won the long jump with an all-time best mark, while Pippa Woolven and Hannah Walker put a cap on a late-day surge with a 2-3 finish in the 3000-meter run. Those performances in the final hour of Friday's competition lifted the Florida State women into the lead entering the final day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship meet.

With 41 points the Seminoles hold a four-point lead of Duke (37), with Maryland (33) and Miami (20) in pursuit.

Paul Madzivire claimed his second ACC indoor long jump title in three years, while teammates Jalen Ramsey and Stefan Brits placed third and fourth, providing the Seminoles with 21 points toward their 40-point total. Florida State enter Saturday's round of finals tied for second with North Carolina and trailing Duke (44).

"It feels great, especially to get a qualifying mark for nationals as well," said Madzivire, who won with a season-best leap of 7.70 meters (25-3.25). "I was extremely nervous coming into this competition. There was a lot on the line and a lot of pressure. There are so many good jumpers out there and in the ACC there's a lot of competition and anything can happen."

"This is the first meet where we actually come to and be a team. It's so great that I have two other jumpers with me and we get to encourage each other, push each other and enjoy the competition."

Madzivire edged NC State's Jonathan Addison (7.70m) with his next-best mark (7.62) settling the tie on his final attempt of the night. Ramsey grabbed bronze with a leap of 7.45 (24-5.75), with Brits (7.44/24-3) right behind him.

After not registering point on the opening day of the meet, the Seminoles got on the board with a similarly dominant performance in the high jump. Senior James Harris not only successfully defended his ACC title, but established a new championship meet record with a leap of 2.24m (7-4.25). Darius King, making his FSU debut after transferring from Indiana, placed fourth (2.18/7-1.75) and Cristobal Hurtado-Arteaga was seventh (2.07/6-9.50), providing the Seminole with 16 team points.

Markindey Sineus accounted for FSU's remaining points with a sixth-place finish in the weight throw, establishing a new personal-best (18.81m/61-8.50).

Dentarius Locke qualified for the finals in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes. The senior from Tampa rolled to the No. 1 time (6.62) in the 60 preliminary round and had the second-fastest 200 time (21.39). Sophomore Otniel Teixeira won his qualifying heat of the 800 to reach the finals in 1:52.54, while senior Jakub Zivec's first mile of the season (4:09.48) was good enough to get him into the finals as well.

Harris squeezed his way into the 400-meter dash finals as the last qualifier in 48.27.

"The field events got it done today," FSU coach Bob Braman said of the Seminole men. "It was a typical ACC meet. You had some really good positives and just when you thing everything is going your way - like any other team - you have a few bad breaks. I think the positives way out-weighed the negatives.

"We're in a good position to have a chance to win this thing tomorrow."

The same can be said of the Seminole women, who bounced back from a shaky performance on Thursday with a huge surge.

Freeman became FSU's first champion, claiming the long jump with an all-time best mark of 7.38 meters (20-11.25), which was not only good for gold, but punched her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships as the fifth-best mark nationally. Equally important was the fifth-place finish by Maryke Brits, who registered a season-best mark of 6.07 (19-11), despite battling an injury.

Woolven and Walker put an exclamation point on the night with their 2-3 finish in the 5000. Walker set the pace through much of the race until Duke's Juliet Bottorff dashed to the front with six laps remaining. Woolven, running her first race of the meet to Walker's second, eventually over-hauled her teammate with a powerful finish over the final 800 meters. They crossed the line in 16:08.93 and 16:13.67, respectively.

The Seminoles also registered multiple scorers in the weight throw, where junior Lakitta Johnson used a career-best mark (20.10m/65-11.50) to edge teammate Briana Cherry-Bronson (20.00/65-7.50) in a 4-5 finish which netted nine points.

Marecia Pemberton enters Saturday's 60-meter dash final as the top qualifier (7.38) and senior classmate Elizabeth Ichite qualified fifth in the 400-meter dash (55.10). Anne Zagre is headed to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles as the No. 3 qualifier in 6.38.

FSU also received strong qualifying efforts by Linden Hall and Colleen Quigley, who raced their way into the final of the women's mile. Hall won her heat with the fastest time of the day (4:42.19) while Quigley comfortably advanced in 4:45.98 by finishing second in her heat.

Heading into Saturday with a chance to pull off the rare double-title sweep, the `Noles know there is still much work to be done.

"It's a very typical ACC meet and we may not know until the last races are over," Braman said.

Seminoles sweep ACC Indoor Track & Field titles.

March 1, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

CLEMSON, SC - Responding with resilience and resolve on the decisive final day of competition, the Florida State men's and women's track & field teams ushered in the new era of Atlantic Coast Conference competition with a sweep of the Indoor Championship team titles.

It was a special feat for the Seminoles, who became just the fifth program in ACC history to claim both team titles. That it came against a beefed-up 15-team field made it all the more sweet.

"Today we got most of the points we could get," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "I feel like we maximized. There were very few missed opportunities. When it's a close battle, you can't miss much. We did what we could do. I felt like we performed really well today and we had to. ...

"[Sweeping is] just so hard to do. You can tell when both teams are good that the administration supports track & field. It wants us to be good; gives us what we need to be successful. It also says you've got unified team that really does feed off of each other."

Hunting their second ACC title and first since 2009, the Seminole women didn't waste any time seizing control of their destiny. Entering the final day with a four-point lead over Duke, FSU bolted from the blocks with juniors Colleen Quigley and Linden Hall delivering a 1-2 finish in the mile and senior Marecia Pemberton claiming her first 60-meter dash title.

Quigley and Hall did not just set the tone, but also a standard, finishing in 4:34.80 and 4:34.93 - the second- and third-fastest times in the nation - to secure spots at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet in two weeks. Quigley also smashed the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Facility record by 13 seconds.

"It felt incredible," said Quigley, who was equally inspired by the Seminoles' five-point loss to Clemson at last year's ACC Outdoor Championship. "Our first priority was to get the points. The second priority was to get Linden to nationals. They were both so important to us. ... Why not go for it. When we both crossed the (finish) line, saw the clock and knew we got a two-second conversion, we were crazy happy."

Pemberton, a fifth-year senior who arrived just after the `Noles claimed their first ACC title in 2009, remembers all too well watching Clemson pick up each of the last four indoor and outdoor team titles. That motivation and the camaraderie served her well as she sped through the finish in a season-best winning time of 7.33.

"You always want to go out with a bang your senior year," Pemberton said. "The chemistry of this team has been a lot different than what I've experienced in past years. So giving them these 10 points meant a lot because we were counting on each other and rooting on each other to do our very best. It wasn't just about Marecia going out and making her goal, it was making sure that I can give them these 10 points so that we can go back on that bus happy tonight."

By the time Anne Zagre scored a silver medal performance in the 60-meter hurdles, shot putters Chelsea Whalen, Kellion Knibb and Lakitta Johnson combined for 10 points and Karly Jackson picked up 1.5 more in the pole vault, the Seminoles held a whopping 40-point lead they would not relinquish.

The Seminoles cruised to a 13.5-point win over Duke, 96.5-83, followed by Notre Dame (65) and Miami (62).

There was far more drama on the men's side, where the Seminoles held a tenuous six-point lead over Notre Dame and a nine-point edge over North Carolina entering the final event. FSU needed a fourth-place to seal its 10th ACC team title.

Spurred on by his wildly cheering men's and women's teammates from the stands, second relay leg Dentarius Locke overcame leg cramps 200 meters into the race to bring the stick back around the track. Michael Cherry and James Harris handled matters from there, finishing third to seal the deal after Notre Dame dropped the baton and did not finish.

Locke's cramps were well-earned. His final day began with the narrowest of victories - by .002 - over Tevin Hester in the 60-meter dash final in 6.63, followed by his third-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

When those cramps hit with a lap remaining on the relay, Locke could only remember falling to Virginia Tech at last year's ACC Indoor Championship meet.

"That was our biggest motivation, even though we came back and won outdoors," he said. "Losing indoors to Virginia Tech at Virginia Tech stuck in our mind, so we wanted to come out here and win. We pulled it out."

The fact that it was decided in the final event of the three-day meet made the triumph all the more sweet.

"That made the conference a lot better, that it got to down to the last race," Locke added. "It shows other conferences that we're not the second conference or the third conference overall, that we can compete with anybody."

Every point mattered for the `Noles, who opened the day tied for second with North Carolina, four points behind Duke. FSU's middle distance group provided a much-needed boost when Jakub Zivec placed fourth in the mile and Otniel Teixeira was sixth in the 800.

Harris' fourth-place finish in a loaded 400-meter dash final kept the ball rolling, before the field events stepped up to answer the call as the Seminoles, Tar Heels and Irish battled to the wire.

Freshmen shot putters Chadrick DaCosta and Austin Droogsma combined for six points, finishing fifth and seventh, but it was the triple jump performance of Jonathan Reid and Owen Cain that sent the `Noles into the 4x400 in control of their own destiny.

Reid, a transfer from Alabama, delivered a gold medal performance with a leap of 6.11 meters (52-10.25) and Cain was fourth as the Seminoles outscored Notre Dame 15-2 in the event.

When the final points were tallied the Seminoles' 96-point total was just enough to hold North Carolina (89) and Notre Dame (84) at bay.

The larger, more balanced conference meet produced the lowest scoring women's champion in ACC history and the lowest on the men's side since 1979; a scenario which may very well be repeated moving forward.

"This is a big one," Braman said of the championship victories. "Indoors is always our Achilles heel. We didn't get all of the points, but we didn't have any disasters. ... Over three days if you don't miss, you fight hard, you've got a shot."

Harris Hits It Big!

Senior soars to high jump title, joins Locke and Quigley in Saturday finals.

March 15, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - James Harris stole the show in the opening event of the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday night at the Albuquerque Convention Center, twice eclipsing his lifetime best on the way to winning the high jump with a leap of 7-7.25 (2.32 meters).

Harris, a senior, set Florida State, Atlantic Coast Conference and facility records en route to the first NCAA Championship of his stellar career.

"Once I got jumping I was kind of grooving," said Harris, who admitted that he had not felt particularly sharp in warm-ups. "I got my steps together and it went really well."

The No. 2 seed entering the meet, Harris sailed through his first three heights without a miss, then needed a third attempt to clear 7-5 to stay in the competition along with favorite Nick Ross of Arizona and Marcus Jackson of Mississippi State.

"When I had two misses at 7-5 and I went over it and cleared it on my third attempt, I knew I had good room," Harris said. "I said, `Oh, my gosh, it's time to go.' ... When I cleared 7-6 on my first attempt I knew the ball was in my court, then."

Harris sailed 7-6 - a new lifetime best - while Ross needed two attempts and Jackson a third to stay in the competition. His first attempt clearance at 7-7.25 - the 10th-best mark in the world this year and the eighth-highest clearance in NCAA history - sealed the victory.

It's the first indoor national title by a Seminole since Ngoni Makusha won the long jump in 2011, on the way to winning The Bowerman Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate track & field athlete.

To beat two long-time rivals and high jump specialists was especially rewarding for the Lanett, Ala. native, who had three near misses at 7-9.75, which would have broken Hollis Conway's 25-year old collegiate record.

"I just treat it as if those guys are high jumpers and I'm a sprinter who happens to high jump," Harris said. "It was all there for me to gain if I just showed up to compete."

In addition to his first NCAA title, Harris became a first-team All-American for the 10th time in his career, but his night was not over. Roughly 90 minutes later, Harris qualified for Saturday's 400-meter final with another lifetime best (45.90), which Harris won the first heat by nipping Florida's Arman Hall, ranked No. 2 in field and No. 1 in U.S., at the finish. Last weekend, Hall was representing the U.S. on the world record-setting 4x400 relay at the World Championships in Poland.

"I felt like all I needed to do was get on the track and just compete like I had been doing," Harris said. "It was a good inspiration because you don't want to do good in one event and get busted in another. It kept me focused."

The Seminoles weren't through with their breakout opening-night performance. Sophomore Der'Renae Freeman, making her first NCAA Championship appearance of any kind, was credited with a second-place finish on the strength of her second-attempt mark of 6. Freeman was ecstatic after picking up her second-place trophy.

"It's pretty exciting," said Freeman, a Winter Garden, Fla. native. "I'm stoked. I didn't expect this. I came in sixth and then I moved to second. I was nervous but I kept my composure and just remained focused; I didn't let anything distract me. I just Freeman's happiness was fleeting, as a video review - on protest - of her best jump of the night, led to meet officials to deem that attempt a foul. That left her to stand on her next-best jump, 20-2.25 (6.15m), which was only good for seventh place.

Happy would describe the dispositions of Seminoles Dentarius Locke and Colleen Quigley, who advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash and women's mile, respectively.

Locke, who false-started in the preliminary round at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, got away cleanly from the blocks and finished strong. The senior from Tampa matched his season-best time (6.56) to finish right on the heels of Alabama's Diondre Quigley had quite a battle on her hands in the second heat of mile, after watching teammate Linden Hall (4:48.65) fail to qualify out of the first heat. As the top seed overall, Quigley could either advance by finishing in the top four of her heat, or h Locked in a tight battle, Quigley chose the surer path, holding on for fourth in 4:42.51 which stood up as the fourth-fastest time entering Saturday's final.

"I think the overall theme was our kids competed their butts off," FSU men's and women's coach Bob Braman said. "James was amazing, and Locke and Quigley were outstanding."

The Seminoles received solid, but non-scoring performances from a trio of individuals competing in their first NCAA Indoor Championships.

Junior Hannah Walker missed a spot on the podium by one place and less than a second, finishing ninth in 16:35.01, while sophomore teammate Pippa Woolven was 13th (17:04.09). Both finished higher than their seeds entering the meet.

"Hannah ran as hard as she could and just missed scoring," Braman said. "Cherry-Bronson, who may be the only non-scholarship kid - certainly in her event and maybe in the building - was solid. For first-timers, it's tough.

"The thing that hurts the most is the Der'Renae thing. ... The athlete is competing to try and do something spectacular; trying to win against an athlete that's an Olympian. ... You ought to be told on the spot and have to challenge it on the spot, and FSU's night ended with the women's distance medley relay team of Georgia Peel, Elizabeth Ichite, Sydnee Over and Hall, coming back off the mile, finishing 10th in 11:22.97. Unfortunately, the team was later disqualified for a zone violation on a handoff With one day down and only five completed events for both the men and the women, the Seminole men are alone in ninth place with 10 points, while the women are tied for 28th with 2 points. Still, the stage is set for even bigger things on Saturday for th "Tomorrow we've some big point opportunities," Braman said. "In the 60 meters, we've got a guy [Locke] who can win the race. In the triple jump, we've got a guy [Jonathan Reid] who can win that. In the 400 we've got the second-seeded guy [Harris] who ca "The men are having a whale of a meet and the women are competing hard. Hopefully Colleen can come back and fight another day and be who Colleen is."

It's A Locke! 'Noles Fourth!

Senior Dentarius Locke wins 60 title as FSU men return to NCAA Indoor podium.

March 16, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Senior Dentarius Locke laid claim to his first NCAA Championship and the Florida State men's team returned to the podium for the first time since 2009 with a fourth-place finish at Saturday's conclusion of the two-day meet at the Albuq On a day when virtually all of the title contenders endured some hardship, the Seminoles overcame their own troubles, parlaying Locke's 60-meter dash title, Jonathan Reid's third-place triple jump finish and a seventh-place finish in the 4x400 into 18 p "We had five scoring opportunities and had two national champions, a third-place that was almost a second," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "You couldn't come in here and do more than they did. You could get more points, but we couldn't have competed any har "I'm proud of them like crazy. We're happy to get a trophy. It was a great job. For us, anytime we're on the podium at indoor, we're happy."

One day after James Harris delivered the Seminoles their first national championship of the meet in the high jump, Locke, the fourth-seed entering the meet, beat a strong field with an all-time best time of 6.52 in the 60-meter final. His altitude-converted time (6.54) matched the school record set by Marvin Bracy last year.

The fifth-year Tampa native ran nearly the perfect final to capture the first championship of a trying career, which began at Tennessee and has included sitting out two seasons. Then there was the false start in the preliminary round of the 60 at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships, when he was the No. 2 seed to Bracy, who also false-started in the prelims.

"It's a blessing," Locke said. "I've been through so much. ... There's been so much build-up; a chip on my shoulder that has been built up. There were a lot of things that were going on in my mind and that made me focus a lot more on me."

Bolting from the blocks, Locke pulled up on Alabama's Diondre Batson, the No. 1 qualifier in Friday's preliminary line, and never looked back from mid-race through the finish line.

"I felt like it was the perfect race. I executed everything I wanted to. ... When I was getting into the blocks all I was saying was, `NCAA champ, this is what I came to get.' Seven days ago I put it on Twitter: Seven Days from now #claimit.

"I was aware (of the competition) but I didn't really see too many people. Of all my races at FSU that was probably my best race, even better than the 9.90, because I was focused on just me. When I did that, when I came up (on the field) and nobody moved in front of me, I knew then it was over. I wanted to wait until it was official and I saw the results."

Locke was ecstatic when the results flashed on the scoreboard at the end of the 60-meter straightaway. Not only had he won - and matched the school record with a lifetime-best - he became the first NCAA Indoor 60-meter champion in Florida State history.

"I felt like it was the perfect race," Locke said, who couldn't wait to share the news with his supportive parents. "I executed everything I wanted to. ... When I was getting into the blocks all I was saying was, `NCAA champ, this is what I came to get.' Seven days ago I put it on Twitter: Seven Days from now #claimit. "It feels great to be a champion - finally."

"It has been an extraordinarily long road for Locke," Braman said. "He ran the perfect race. He focused on himself and he got that national title. He was picked fifth coming in but wasn't worried about who was out there. National champions - there are only 15 individuals - and we've got two of them. That's pretty cool."

Reid followed up with a pivotal third-place finish in the triple jump, posting a mark of 16.28 meters (53-5), despite a tender right ankle that he had taped and re-taped throughout the competition.

"Coach [Dennis] Nobles is a great coach and he keeps telling me what I can jump. I don't think I can jump that far, but when he tells it to me I think, `Maybe I can.' Today, my ankle was killing me and I really just dug in and tried to do my best."

FSU's final points of the day on the men's side came from the 4x400 relay team of Alonzo Russell, Ricardo Roy, Michael Cherry and Harris, as they finished seventh in 3:08.18.

Junior Colleen Quigley provided the only points of the day for the Seminole women, finishing sixth in the mile. Quigley led most of the way when she could not find a willing competitor to set a swift pace. She was still in front with two laps remaining but had to hang on for sixth, despite a career-best altitude converted time of 4:34.29.

In the process, she extended FSU's streak of consecutive years with a first-team All-American in the women's mile to nine years; 10 in the last 11.

The Florida State women finish tied for 39th with five points. In addition to Quigley's three-point contribution, the `Noles received a seventh-place finish from freshman Der'Renae Freeman in the long jump on Friday.

The FSU men began Saturday's competition in ninth place on the strength of Harris' high jump win in a school-record leap of 7-7.25.

FSU Relays Off To Rousing Start.

'Noles score five victories; high schoolers flourish on fast track.

March 21, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Serving both as gracious host and beneficiary of near-perfect conditions, Friday could not have gone a lot better for the Florida State track & field teams.

The opening day of the 35th FSU Relays included five combined wins for the Seminoles, individual and relay wins for a trio of future `Noles and three meet records by high school stars. By any measure it was a great opening act to the two-day meet, which features nearly 1500 athletes from 12 states.

"It was a great atmosphere today and the high school kids were getting after it," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "There were three meet records, a pretty good crowd and a lot of excitement with people coming to Florida State. It was a good day for FSU Relays top to bottom."

It didn't take the Seminoles long to record the first victory of the day. The quartet of Marecia Pemberton, Anne Zagre, Der'Renae Freeman and Jande Pierce moved the baton around the track in 44.29 to win the meet-opening 4x100 relay. What makes the mark, in the first outdoor meet of the season of the women's sprinters, even more impressive is it would have ranked 12th nationally in 2013.

FSU freshman Nicole Setterington didn't waste any time leaving her mark either, winning her collegiate 100-meter hurdles debut in 13.69 into a -1.3 head-wind.

The individual highlight of the day came from sophomore Hannah Acton, who led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Seminoles in the pole vault. Acton's victory came courtesy a lifetime best of 4.02 meters (13-2.25). Classmate Karly Jackson was second (3.87m/12-8.25), followed by freshman Madison Schmidt (3.72/12-2.50).

Not to be outdone, the Seminole men got on the winning side of things when senior Jakub Zivec captured the 1500-meter run in 3:49.28, followed by sophomore teammate Otniel Teixeira (4:53.87) in second place.

Senior transfer Darius King collected the Seminoles' fifth victory of the day, winning the high jump in 2.12 meters (6-11.50).

Beyond the victories, the Seminoles received solid second-place showings in the javelin from Garrett Singletary on the men's side (57.63m/189-1) and Chelsea Whalen for the women (50.99/167-3). Redshirt freshman Victoria Reiman, who set the FSU Relays high school discus meet record in 2012 as a senior at Bolles, was second with a personal-best mark of 43.91 meters (144-1).

"We had a lot we were trying to get done here today," Braman said. "The field events were probably a little better than the running events today with (Hannah) Acton, (Darius) King, (Tori) Reiman and (Chelsea) Whalen.

"In the running events, Setterington looked good running the 100 hurdles, which really benefits her. The 4x100 was really good. That's a team that is only going to get better and probably our fastest girl isn't in the lineup yet. The 4x100 is going to be a factor at nationals and that's great to see.

"(Jakub) Zivec and (Otniel) Teixeira both had a good 1500. Teixeira had a PR and so that was good to see."

The high school portion of the meet included plenty of drama as meet records were toppled in the boys 3200, the boys 4x800 relay and the girls long jump.

Three future Seminoles also found their way to the top of the podium during Friday's action. Wakulla High senior and FSU signee Madison Harris captured the 800-meter run in 2:14.67, while Estero High seniors Katie Slater and Araceli Leon, who have also signed with `Noles, teamed up on the winning 4x800 relay team (9:29.77). Slater was also third in the 800.

"It's a great to see the future Seminoles doing well," Braman said. "We're going to see some more of them tomorrow. In the case of Madison, she's at the top of the state rankings again and it looks like she's got a lot more. ...

"The Estero girls, particularly Katie Slater, looked good today. We're excited to see what those kids are going to do in our uniform, but if they're here doing it now and beating some of the best kids in the state, that's a good sign."

One of those Seminole signees in action Saturday is the nation's top-rated sprinter, Kendal Williams of Stanton Prep, who has already laid down the fastest 100-meter time of the year nationally (10.28).

"I think we're in a good spot if we can have another good day like we had today, tomorrow, with individual accomplishments and bigger things lying ahead," Braman added.

Seven Wins On Final Day.

Seminoles close FSU Relays in style with Pemberton leading the way.

March 22, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State senior Marecia Pemberton's collegiate-leading 100-meter dash victory highlighted Saturday's 35th FSU Relays finale at Mike Long Track.

The Seminoles won seven events on the final day of the meet - 13 in all over two days - in what amounted to their outdoor season-opening event.

A redshirt senior, Pemberton won in 11.48, which is not only the fastest time thus far among NCAA Division I sprinters, but her fastest performance since 2011. She had plenty of motivation to perform well in her outdoor debut, after missing out on an NCAA Indoor Championships berth in the 60-meter dash by .02 seconds.

"I was really mad about not making NCAA for the 60, for like a week-and-half or two weeks," Pemberton said. "But I told myself, I grew up running outdoors. I grew up with the 100, not the 60. ... I knew with the energy and anger inside of me, I was going to do better in the 100."

She did not disappoint, turning back a field of 27 for the win.

"When I crossed the line I thought I heard them say 11.38, so I was more excited," she added. "Last year I opened up with 11.8 and the year before I opened up with 11.8 and I ended up with 11.6. I have to be thankful. I'm only going to get better.

"The thing is I know what I did wrong. Something went wrong with my start. It wasn't as crisp as it usually is in practice, and I fought all the way after 50 meters, which coach Ken (Harnden) is trying to get out of me. Once I relax and just roll through the line, the time is going to come down."

FSU coach Bob Braman didn't hesitate when it came to identifying Pemberton while discussing the meet highlights for the Seminoles.

"I thought Pemberton was huge," Braman said. "That's a great opener and has potential for national implications. If she takes off a tenth of a second a month, you're looking at 11.20-something, which is certainly a scoring type time. ... That is my mind is the highlight of the whole meet; that and the women's 4x100."

Pemberton was also a member of that winning relay team on Friday, which also posted a nation-leading time of 44.29.

FSU did most of its damage over the two-day meet in the field events and Saturday was no different. Freshman Chadrick DaCosta was the Seminoles lone double-winner, opening the final day of the meet with a victory in the men's discus (50.16m/164-7), then capping the day competition with a shot put triumph (16.84m/55-3).

Another Seminole freshman, Cayman Ellis, claimed his first collegiate pole vault victory with a clearance of 4.80 meters (15-9).

Chelsea Whalen opened her senior season with an FSU Relays title in the women's shot put (15.80m/51-10). Fellow senior Marsha Ariol scored the first individual victory of her career in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.75).

Redshirt freshman Jake Burton rounded out the Florida State victories, claiming the 800-meter run in 1:51.05.

"Overall I thought we had a good meet," Braman said. "The two meets coming up are big and I think we set the table well."

Neither Braman nor anyone else involved with the meet could have been disappointed with the outstanding weather and superior performances turned in on the high school side. One day after three high school meet records fell, five others went by the boards on the final day of competition, including the 1600, boys discus, girls pole vault, girls triple jump and girls 4x400 relay.

Though he did not set a meet mark, FSU signee and Stanton High senior did claim his second consecutive FSU Relays 100-meter title.

"The high school meet was spectacular today," Braman said. "The high school meet continues to get better and better, and bigger and bigger."

Solid Day For Sadeiko.

Frosh heptathlete ninth after Day 1 at Texas Relays.

March 26, 2014

AUSTIN, TX - Florida State redshirt freshman Grete Sadeiko began her season debut in the heptathlon Wednesday at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, hoping to finish what she started a year ago at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

With four events in the books, the Estonian native is in ninth place with 3,186 points, while competing against an elite field of 24 multi-event athletes in the two-day competition.

Sadeiko opened and closed the day with outstanding performances. Her wind-aided time of 14.17 in the 100-meter hurdles - the fastest she has ever recorded - was worth 954 points in the first of seven events contested. She put a wrap on Wednesday with an equally impressive time of 25.17 in the 200-meter dash, which was also wind-aided, but was eighth-fastest in the field.

By pocketing 817 points in the final event, Sadeiko climbed from 11th to 9th overall in the standings.

Between the two running events, Sadeiko checked in with a high jump mark of 1.63 meters (5-4.25), which netted 771 points. A shot put mark of 10.92 meters (35-10) was good for only 590 points.

Sadeiko will head into Thursday's final three events - the long jump, javelin and 800 meters - looking to make a run at an NCAA Outdoor Championships qualifying mark, which will require a top 24 mark nationally. In 2013, the 24th-place spot on the heptathlon national scoring list was 5,397 points.

A year ago, as a true freshman, Sadeiko made her collegiate debut in the heptathlon at the Texas Relays. She closed out the first day with 3,183 points and had logged 4,582 through six events before a sore foot forced her to withdraw from competition before the 800. Her season was ultimately cut short a few weeks later by a severe knee injury, which led to a medical redshirt.

Hepthathlete's comeback marked by eighth-place finish at Texas Relays.

March 27, 2014

AUSTIN, TX - Grete Sadeiko's second-day heptathlon performance at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays produced the second-best score in Florida State history and an eighth-place finish against a stacked field of 24.

Completing her first heptathlon in two years, the redshirt freshman from Estonia climbed as high as sixth place in the seven-event competition and closed out Thursday's action with 5,398 points, just 12 points shy of the school record (5,410) set by Carmelia Shivers in 1991.

Entering the final day with 3,186 points and alone in ninth place, Sadeiko got off to a quick start with the fifth-best long jump (5.73 meters/18-9.25) in the field and the fourth-best javelin mark (42.38m/139-0). By adding 1,481 points to her total after two events Thursday, Sadeiko climbed into sixth place. A 2:27.03 effort in the closing 800-meter run left her two points out of sixth place.

Regardless, the outcome, Sadeiko's performance was nothing short of outstanding.

"This is the first heptathlon that she has finished in two years and less than one year removed from complete ACL reconstruction," FSU Director of Field Events Dennis Nobles said. "I'm pretty happy. Could it have been better? Yes, it could have been better, because there were some events that were very average, but to come out less than a year after having your ACL reconstructed, compete as well as she did and score almost 5,400 points with a couple of very average events, I'm very happy. She's ready for better than that. I think that we're in a good place right now."

With only the top 24 heptathletes advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June, Sadeiko is very close to punching her ticket for a trip to Eugene, Ore. in May, if not already there. A year ago, the No. 24 qualifier had a season-best score of 5,397 points. Her next opportunity to secure a berth will come at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C., April 17-19.

A year ago at the Texas Relays, Sadeiko was on her way to a solid collegiate debut when she was forced to withdraw from the competition prior to the start of the 800. Roughly one month later she suffered a devastating knee injury in practice which led to a medical hardship season.

Nobles, who has coached FSU's jumpers and multi-event athletes for 30 years, marveled at the work that has been done to get Sadeiko ready for the outdoor season, specifically citing her commitment and the work of athletic trainer Gwen Davis.

"This is a remarkable recovery," Nobles said. "I can't say enough about much work Gwen has done on her and just how compliant and devoted Grete has been to rehab. To be honest, I expected this next year. She's at least six months ahead of where I thought she would be."

Perhaps more importantly, Sadeiko's confidence is on the rise as is her fitness level.

"All indoor season she was never really healthy," Nobles said. "We could train for maybe two days and then have to take a couple days away. Now that we're getting some consistency in training, she's starting to see, `Hey, I'm faster and stronger than I've ever been. My technique is as good as it has ever been, or better.' I think that's finally starting to come home because she can do things on a daily basis."

Thursday's action at Mike A. Myers Stadium also included a pair of impressive performances in the women's hammer by newcomer Katja Vangsnes and veteran Briana Cherry-Bronson. Vangsnes, a multi-time winner of Norway's junior national title, placed 10th in her FSU outdoor debut with a throw of 57.11 meters (187-4). That is the second-best mark in Florida State history, trailing only LaKeisha Mose's school-record 57.22. Cherry-Bronson was close behind with a career-best mark of 54.57 meters (179-0), which moved the junior from Naples into third place on the Seminoles' all-time list.

Whalen, Johnson and Acton shine brightest Friday at Texas Relays.

March 28, 2014

AUSTIN, TX - A challenging day at the 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, which included a severe weather delay, ended on a high note Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Senior Chelsea Whalen and junior Lakitta Johnson finished third and seventh, respectively, in the A section of the women's shot put to cap a 12-hour day of competition by the Seminoles.

After qualifying for the finals in sixth and seventh place, Whalen and Johnson unleashed their best throws of the night in the fifth of six rounds. Johnson eclipsed her lifetime-best outdoors by 4 ½ feet, posting a throw of 16.04 meters (53-9.75). The Ocala, Fla. native became just the fourth shot putter in FSU history to eclipse 16 meters outdoors and jumped from No. 8 to No. 4 on the all-time list.

Whalen, throwing immediately after Johnson, followed with her best mark since breaking her own outdoor school-record throw on May 11 of last year at the Georgia Tech Invitational. With a throw of 16.40 meters (52-7.50), she climbed from sixth to second in the 15-athlete A section of the competition.

On a day when the highlights were few and far between, Whalen was responsible for two of them. She opened the day with a fourth-place finish in the A section of the javelin, on the strength of a throw of 50.73 meters (166-5).

The highest place secured by a Seminole Friday belonged to sophomore Hannah Acton. Competing in the B section of the pole vault, Acton cleared her first three bars on the first attempts, with a best of 4.00 meters (13-1.50). The Bloomington, Indiana native settled for a share of second place following a five-athlete jump-off.

Long jumpers Paul Madzivire (7.27m/23-10.25) and Der'Renae Freeman (5.96m/19-6.75) placed eighth and ninth, respectively, in the A sections of the men's and women's long jump.

The Seminoles failed to get a single runner or relay team into the finals in track events. Freshman Cejhae Greene's outdoor debut in the 100-meter dash (10.52) was the most promising by an FSU runner.

Quigley, Walker and Vangsnes stand out at Crimson Tide Invitational.

TUSCALOOSA, AL and PALO ALTO, CA - Florida State juniors Hannah Walker and Colleen Quigley established new Sam Bailey Stadium track records Saturday night, and Katja Vangsnes broke a school record, highlighting the action at the Crimson Tide Invitational.

Walker delivered the Seminoles one of two victories on the night, winning in 16:13.77 to lead a 1-2-3 sweep by the women's distance team in the 5000-meter rush. The junior took down a 25-year-old facility mark, previously set by Nebraska's Samme Resh (16:17.00) in 1989. Georgia Peel (16:38.06) and Linden Hall (16:44.21) followed Walker across the finish line as the `Noles piled up 24 points to climb from fourth to third place in the eight-team, scored meet.

Quigley provided the Seminoles with the first win of the day as the 2013 NCAA Outdoor runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase paced a 1-2-4 finish by FSU runners in her specialty event, crossing the line in 9:56.96. That eradicated the old track mark set by Georgia's Sarah Madebach (10:13.73) in 2007. Pippa Woolven was second (10:14.16), followed by Chelsi Woodruff in fourth (10:32.50).

Host Alabama captured the men's team title with 165 points, while the Seminoles placed fourth with 63. Penn State ran off with the women's team title, amassing 164.5 points, followed by Alabama (125) and Florida State (74).

"We got some good things done," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "We're very tired this week, so to see the girls put up some solid performances really speaks to their toughness. We are working really hard. A lot of these girls are looking to June, not to just regionals. A lot of them hit their times, which is real encouraging."

In addition to the stellar women's distance efforts, Vangsnes smashed the Florida State school record in the hammer throw. Competing in just her second outdoor meet for the `Noles, the sophomore unleashed a season-best mark of 59.08 meters (193-10) on her sixth and final attempt, breaking the 14-year-old mark previously held by LaKeisha Mose (57.22m/182-8).

Junior Lakitta Johnson also scored a runner-up finish for the Seminole women in the shot put (15.19m/49-10). Only the top six places scored in the meet, which also included Indiana, Louisville, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas-Arlington.

The Florida State men failed to log an individual victory, but received runner-up finishes from Paul Madzivire in the long jump (7.60m/24-11.25), James Harris in the high jump (2.21m/7-3) and both the 4x100 (40.49) and 4x400 (3:10.38) relay teams, neither of which included stacked lineups.

Freshman Chadrick DaCosta registered a personal-best in the discus on his sixth and final throw with a mark of 52.49 meters (172-2), which was good for fourth place. Namer Ray placed third in the 400-meter hurdles (53.19).

"It wasn't a very good meet for us," said FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden. "We did some of the things we wanted to do, getting the two relay teams into the fast heat for the ACC Championship."

Hardnen, however, said the overall performance will likely lead to a little more emphasis placed on next week's Seminole Invitational meet, with the ACC Outdoor Championships coming a week later in Chapel Hill, N.C. "We can lick our wounds and get ready for the home meet," he added. "We've got to get ourselves ready for the conference meet some way."

Yarham, Zivec solid at Stanford

Florida State's Glen Yarham and Jakub Zivec opened their outdoor seasons at the Stanford Invitational with solid performances in races contested late Friday night (Pacific Time) under cool and rainy conditions at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Competing in his first 10,000-meter race as a Seminole, Yarham placed seventh is section B in 29:18.77; the ninth-fastest time in school history. The sophomore from Australia covered the first 5000 meters in 14:53, but came back with a strong finish over the final 5000 in 14:25.

Zivec, competing in section 3 of the 1500-meter run, nearly pulled off the heat victory with a 55.8 second final lap. The senior finished in 3:48.75, just .07 off Arkansas All-American Patrick Rono's winning time of 3:48.68.

Focused & Fast Start.

FSU track teams set five new top-10 marks at Seminole Invitational.

April 11, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Accepting the challenge issued by the coaching staff just two days earlier, the Florida State track & field teams turned in a strong opening performance Friday in the Seminole Invitational at Mike Long Track.

With five Seminoles registering top 10 all-time FSU standards, and wins in seven of 11 contested events, it was a needed lift with the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships looming next week.

"It was a pretty good day," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "The focus was there and that's what we asked for. We're going to need it tomorrow, because we're sure as heck going to need it next week."

The Seminoles didn't waste any time getting started as freshman Chadrick DaCosta won the discus with a mark of 54.15 meters (177-8), which is the eighth-best throw in school history. Fellow freshman Austin Droogsma opened up his outdoor season with a second-place showing (47.38/155-5).

FSU's women were even better in the discus. School record holder, sophomore Kellion Knibb, capped a solid series with a winning mark of 54.22 (177-10). Redshirt freshman Victoria Reiman finished fourth overall with the No. 6 throw in Seminole history (46.97m/154-1), while junior BreeAnne Campbell placed fifth with a mark of 45.87 (150-6), which ranks No. 9 in all-time.

Junior Garrett Singletary used a career-best throw of 60.39 meters (198-1) in the javelin to not only score the win, but move into the No. 10 spot on FSU's all-time list. Teammate Travis Michaud placed second (52.53m/172-4).

"We had two big field event improvements with Garrett Singletaryand Chad DaCosta," Braman said. "Those are two big, helpful step-ups, because every point is going to count. Those are guys who put themselves in higher scoring position in the ACC.

"Our field event guys did a nice job of setting the table. And you'd say ditto on the women's side. ... That was a nice return to excellence for Kellion Knibb. We had nice PRs for our second and third-best discus throwers who put themselves in the top 10 of the conference rankings."

Senior Chelsea Whalen also delivered the `Noles a win in the javelin with throw of 48.92 meters (160-6).

The highlights did not end there. Redshirt freshman Grete Sadeiko established a new lifetime best to win the high jump at 1.74 meters (5-8.50), which is the eighth-best mark in school history. On the men's side, Cristobal Hurtado-Arteagawon the high jump in 2.03 meters (6-8).

Redshirt freshman Stanley Lintonmade the most of his Florida State debut, winning the night-ending 5000-meter run in a career-best time of 14:56.02.

ACC Tune-Up Complete!

FSU track carries Seminole Invitational momentum in conference meet.

April 12, 2014

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Putting a wrap on the Seminole Invitational with another inspiring performance Saturday at Mike Long Track, the Florida State track & field teams can turn their attention to next week's Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships.

Despite limited competition from the opposition, the Seminoles completed their ACC tune-up with multiple personal-best marks on the final day of the two-day meet.

"The obvious conclusion on this is our people really got the message and they really stepped up," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "We had a great meet. We had a really, really strong focused meet in spite of a lack of competition. We knew this was critical and the kids responded.

"We had a lot of people move up on the ACC list and get into scoring position that we did not have during the early outdoor season."

Junior Anne Zagre provided a pair of highlight victories, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 13.04 and coming back a short time later to claim the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 23.31. Those times moved the Brussels, Belgium native to No. 1 in the ACC in both events.

Zagre, however, wasn't alone in the hurdles. Freshman Nicole Setterington was second with a lifetime-best time of 13.43, Maryke Brits placed fourth (14.18), just off her personal-best.

Just hours after Friday's rousing start to the meet, the Seminole throws group came through again, led by junior Markindey Sineus. Despite a late arrival to the event and a limited warm-up period, due to transportation issue, Sineus unleashed a career-best mark of 62.55 meters (205-2) on his opening throw to claim the victory.

"Markindey's hammer may have been the men's performance of the day," said Braman, after Sineus posted the No. 2 mark in program history, and the second-best mark this season in the ACC.

Junior Briana Cherry-Bronson claimed the women's weight throw with a mark of 53.22m (174-7).

"Standing out would be Coach Hon's group - all the high hurdlers - and you can include Anne Zagre throwing down a conference-leading 23.31 in the 200. It was a big, big meet for Anne."

Freshman Chadrick DaCosta scored his second win in as many days, claiming the shot put title with a career-best throw of 17.07 meters (56-0), after winning the discus on Friday. Senior Chelsea Whalen back up her Friday javelin win by claiming the women's shot put win in 15.78m (51-9.25) as the Seminole men and women combined to claim first place in all eight throwing events.

Karly Jackson edged sophomore teammate Hannah Acton for the women's pole vault win, with both clearing 3.90 meters (12.-9.50).

The Seminoles were also a force in the sprint events, led by freshman Cejhae Greene, who shaved nearly one-tenth of his previous fastest 100-meter dash mark to win in 10.38. Fellow freshman Michael Cherry, making his outdoor season individual event debut, claimed the 400-meter dash in 46.38.

Veterans James Harris and Dentarius Locke made the most of their first individual running event performances of the outdoor season, finishing 1-2 in the 200-meter dash. Harris won the second heat in 20.81, while Locke claimed the first heat in 20.87.

One of the more pleasant performances was freshman Kali Davis-White'stime of 23.65 in the 200-meter dash. The nation's top high school sprinter last season, Davis-White has been slowly working her way back from an injury suffered in the opening meet of the indoor season.

"Kali Davis-White - welcome back," Braman said. "The freshman has kind of arrived at the right time. Kudos to the training staff for getting our kids healthy at the right time. Knock on wood, we can carry that through the season."

FSU's middle distance runners also stepped up with inspired performances, despite a lack of outside competition. Sophomore Otniel Teixeira registered a personal-best of 1:149.15 - which currently ranks No. 3 in the ACC - to claim the 800-meter win. On the women's side, the 1500-meter trio of Colleen Quigley (4:17.06), Linden Hall (4:19.25) and Georgia Peel (4:22.14) claimed the top three spots.

'Noles Off To Early Leads.

Freeman win, silver and bronze medals mark start of ACC Outdoor Championships.

April 17, 2014

CHAPEL HILL, NC - It's never bad to be in front, even if it's early.

That's where the Florida State men's and women's track & field teams stand Thursday night after the first of three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships.

The Seminoles - men and women - used big finishes Thursday in the final two events, the long jump and 10,000-meter run, to seize the team leads in the 15-team meet at Belk Track and Fetzer Field on the North Carolina campus.

Florida State's women tallied 24 points and are 11 clear of second place NC State. Virginia Tech (12), Miami and Duke (10, each) follow.

The Seminole men rolled up 28 points on the opening day, seven clear of second place Syracuse (21), with NC State (18), Notre Dame (15) and Virginia Tech (14) in pursuit.

"Normally we're a Saturday team - a final day team - and most of our points come out of that," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "For us to come out of the blocks I was really, really pleased. There's no question our kids were really well prepared and excited to compete. We had a really good day. We didn't miss too many things."

Der'Renae Freeman literally leaped from fourth to first place on her final long jump attempt, claiming the title with a winning effort of 6.34 meters (20-9.75).

"To be honest I think this was the first time I've ever won on my final attempt," said Freeman, a sophomore from Winter Garden, Fla. "I felt like today was my day. I was on the board in prelims, but I was off the board in finals. I didn't freak out. I maintained my composure and said a quick prayer. ... I'm just filled with joy right now."

Shortly after Freeman made her gold medal-winning jump, Hannah Walker took to the track as the Seminoles lone entrant in the 10,000.

Setting the pace from the start and battling Duke's Juliet Bottorff stride-for-stride until the final lap, Walker finished second in 32:56.90, which was fast enough to break the ACC Championship meet record and move into second place on FSU's all-time list.

Glen Yarham followed Walker onto the track for the men's 10,000, quickly establishing himself as a threat in his ACC Championships debut. The native Australian spent nearly the entire race running in the top three and came home third with a new a new personal-best time of 29:15.53, which ranks No. 8 all-time among Seminoles.

Yarham's capper closed out a day when the Seminoles netted a pair of second-place and a pair of third-place finishes in three completed events. Junior Markindey Sineus got things started with a silver medal performance in the hammer, scoring with a mark of 59.26 meters (194-5).

One of the best battles of the day came in the men's long jump where FSU's Paul Madzivire and Jalen Ramsey each recorded marks of 7.62 meters (25-0), as did NC State's Jonathan Addison. Each competitors' second-best jump was used to break the tie, leading Addison to victory by one centimeter over Madzivire, with Ramsey third by just four centimeters.

"When your premium in this conference is on high scoring, because that's how you win this meet, you need to get those top-three finishes and you have to have a bunch of them," Braman said, assessing the first day of competition. "We qualified really well and competed really well, and we're only a couple of centimeters away from being even four points better. If you look across the board, a lot of teams that are chasing on the men's side, had a pothole or two that they hit. ... For the most part we managed to avoid the big miss, which is important to do on Friday and Saturday."

Dentarius Locke (20.84) and James Harris (21.14) each qualified for Saturday's 200-meter finals automatically by winning their heats.

Beyond the work of Freeman and Walker, hammer throwers Katja Vangsnes and Briana Cherry-Bronson combined for six points by placing fourth and sixth, respectively.

FSU's women also performed well in the qualifying rounds of the 200 and 1500. Anne Zagre advanced to the finals by winning her 200 heat in 23.80, while Kali Davis-White is moving on by virtue of time (23.79) after placing third in her preliminary heat.

Two of FSU's three 1500-meter entrants advanced to Saturday's final, with Georgia Peel winning her heat in commanding fashion (4:23.68) and Linden Hall advancing on time (4:23.17) after placing third in her section.

One of the biggest developments of the day was the performance of redshirt freshman Grete Sadeiko in the heptathlon. The No. 2 seed entering the competition, she rolled up a career-best 3,446 points and takes a 179-point lead into Friday's final three events. Sadeiko's breakout performance was aided by three all-time best marks in three of the first four events.

Sadeiko opened the day with lifetime-best mark of 14.09 in the 100-meter hurdles, the third-fastest mark in the field of 14 competitors, good for 966 points. The Estonia native kept her big day going when she cleared 1.76 meters (5-9.25) in the high jump, tops in the field and worth 928 points, then matched that with the best shot put throw (12.55m/41-2.25).

"It's almost to exciting," Sadeiko said. "In the heptathlon if you get going good in your first event it puts you in a good place, like you can perform well in everything else. That's what we've been working for. ..

"Inside I knew I was ready to do it. Last weekend put a lot of confidence in me."

With a school record and a chance to secure an NCAA Championship berth in her sights, Sadeiko doesn't plan to do anything different Friday.

"What really helped me today was that I wasn't really over-thinking," she said. "I took everything that I know in practice and just put it into the competition. That's the same thing I need to do tomorrow."

Collectively, the Seminoles will try and follow the same pattern as they chase a potential sweep of both the men's and women's ACC Indoor and Outdoor team titles.

Leading With A Day To Go!

Seminoles chasing history, ACC Outdoor team titles on final day.

April 18, 2014

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Behind Grete Sadeiko's record-setting victory in the heptathlon and Colleen Quigley's successful steeplechase title defense, the Florida State women's track & field team holds a 30-point lead over its nearest competitor entering the final day of the ACC Outdoor Championships.

Closing out Friday's competition with 67 points, the Seminole women lead Virginia Tech (37 points), while North Carolina and Duke are lurking with 33 points entering Saturday's finale at Belk Track and Fetzer Field on the UNC campus.

Meanwhile, the Florida State men are still in front as well, though their lead is a little less comfortable. Riding James Harris' victory and an 18-point haul in the high jump, the Seminoles enter the final day with 48 points; two more than second-place Duke. Syracuse (33) and North Carolina (23) are chasing from the third- and fourth-place positions.

FSU coach Bob Braman is especially wary of host North Carolina, which like the Seminoles, also enjoyed a good day of qualifying on Friday.

"Neither team has blinked," Braman said, setting the stage for Saturday's showdown. "There has not been that historic, bad situation that someone has to overcome. ... There have been some nice swings either way for both of us. It's going to be very much like indoors. It's going to be one of those one-two-three-four-five point type of deal."

The Seminoles squeezed out a seven-point win over the Tar Heels for the ACC Indoor title on March 1.

Both Seminoles teams will be chasing a bit of history on what will likely be a cool and rainy Saturday of finals competition. After sweeping the men's and women's indoor titles, the Seminoles can become just the third program in ACC history to bring home all four track titles in the same year.

A title for the FSU women would also complete the Triple Crown - same school-year championships in cross country, indoors and outdoors - joining only the 2009 Seminoles and a pair of North Carolina teams in that elite group.

"It's an individual and a team event and nobody wants to not be at their best," Braman said. "All of the ladies tomorrow need to focus on their individual event as if it's their last race or last performance ever. It's going to be raining and there are going to be some challenges. ... We're not done with this championship. We've got to knock some things out. We have to keep the foot on the accelerator."

Providing bookend victories to Friday's competition, Sadeiko and Quigley set the stage for a potentially historic finish. A redshirt freshman from Estonia, and coming off ACL reconstruction 11 months ago, Sadeiko was the class of the heptathlon field, posting the top marks in both the long jump and javelin on her way to a school record and lifetime-best 5,706 points.

"It's almost too great," Sadeiko said. "Last year, sitting out was no fun at all. I've got a great team behind me and everybody is so supporting, I would not trade it for anything."

Posting four wins in the seven-event, two-day competition, Sadeiko was no match for the field of 14 competitors. Her winning point total virtually secures a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and gives the Seminoles their first ACC heptathlon title since 2000.

"It feels great and looking to the results, I actually did really good in six events, but I still have a lot in me," Sadeiko said. "For nationals I can definitely come up with another 200 or 300 points."

"Grete's win was giant," Braman said. "That is a huge performance. ... She's coming into her own. All of her events are either lifetime bests or better."

Running from the front the entire way - but not comfortably - Quigley came away with the victory in 10:09.50, with teammate Pippa Woolven joining her on the podium with a bronze medal finish in 10:20.61. Quigley overcame back spasms en route to her second consecutive title.

The Seminoles were also receiving scoring contributions beyond the winners. Senior Chelsea Whalen was fourth in the javelin , with Sadeiko contributing a seventh-place finish for a seven-point total. Clearing 3.98 meters (13-0.75) in the pole vault, Karly Jackson and Hannah Acton placed fifth and sixth in the pole vault for seven more points. Whalen and Lakitta Johnson were seventh and eighth in the shot put, adding three more to the total.

Adding the ACC Outdoor high jump title to his two career indoor crowns was not easy for Harris, who prevailed on fewer misses to win with a mark of 2.16 meters (7-1). More importantly to the men's title hopes, Darius King (2.10m/6-10.75) and Cristobal Hurtado-Arteaga (2.04/6-8.25) finished fourth and sixth.

"Those were hard-earned points and we didn't have an easy time of it," Braman said. "Going 1-4-6 was big, big, big for the men."

Freshman Austin Droogsma's seventh-place finish in the shot put, with a season-best mark of 16.59 meters (54-5.25), accounted for FSU's only other points on the men's side Friday.

"Those are big points and Austin is an example of what we need to happen for the rest of the meet," Braman added.

While the point-scorers were few, the Seminole men were positioning themselves well for the final day with outstanding work in qualifying heats. Dentarius Locke and Otniel Teixeira ran the fastest qualifying times in the 100 (10.20) and 800 (1:49.46), respectively, and will have teammates at their side in the finals as well. John Franklin III joins Locke in the 100 after qualifying on time in 10.72, while Jake Burton was the second-fastest 800-meter qualifier in 1:49.48, nearly finishing side-by-side of Teixeira.

Michael Cherry and Alonzo Russell will give the Seminoles two finalists in the 400 meters, advancing on time in 46.11 and 46.72, respectively.

The Seminoles also received a No. 1 qualifying time from fifth-year senior Marecia Pemberton, who won her heat of the 100-meter dash in 11.67. Anne Zagre and Nicole Setterington are moving on to the final in the 100-meter hurdles, qualifying in 13.52 and 13.88, respectively.

"We were qualifying strong all day long," Braman said. "And they qualified fast, they didn't qualify in the back door. They set the marks for everyone to chase."

Twice As Nice!

Seminole men, women sweep ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

April 19, 2014

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Withstanding the heat of competition on a dreary, damp and cold day, the Florida State men's and women's track & field teams are bringing two more Atlantic Coast Conference Championship trophies back home.

Led by Most Valuable Track Performer Dentarius Locke the Seminole squeezed out a three-point victory over host North Carolina with a title-clinching third-place finish in the 4x400 relay to claim their 11th championship trophy since 2002.

On a day when every point mattered, Locke won the 100 (10.16), helped a patchwork 4x100 relay to another gold medal and added a third-place finish in the 200, before demanding a spot on the 4x400 relay with the meet on the line. He delivered there, too.

"MVP means Most Valuable Player," Locke said. "I come out here not only to be the best that I can, but the best for my team. So with the last event of the day, a title on the line, we had to go and get it. I cleared my mind, my body and my soul and I was ready."

So was Otniel Teixeira, whose surprising 800-meter title - and a fourth-place finish by teammate Jake Burton - buoyed the `Noles with 15 pivotal points in the later stages of the meet and helped offset the Tar Heels' 24-point haul in the 400-meter hurdles.

"We just had to keep fighting because it was never over," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "Neither one of us blinked so we had to go out and win the meet."

While the men were trading body blows with the Tar Heels, the Seminole women were watching a 30-point lead sliced to 13 down the stretch, despite a victory from Kellion Knibb in the discus. Running the 5000 meters on tired legs, Pippa Woolven and Linden Hall delivered the clinching points in the meet's penultimate event, placing fourth and fifth.

Those nine points not only delivered the Seminoles their first ACC outdoor team title since 2009 - just the third in school history - but also wrapped up the ACC Triple Crown, completing the sweep of cross country, indoor and outdoor titles in the same school year.

"The women winning the Triple Crown was the goal from the start of the year," Braman said. "Of the three championships, cross country might have been the most comfortable. Indoor, we were dominating every event. Today we had some momentum turns at points and had to rally at the end. The Outdoor championship was the toughest of three."

As an added feather, the Seminoles became just the third program in the history of the ACC to sweep both the men's and women's Indoor and Outdoor titles in the same season, joining the 2009 FSU teams and the 1995 North Carolina squads.

"We're the only team that has done it twice in the history of the ACC," Braman added." I'm going to brag on that a little bit, knowing that we were a little lucky and I'm humbled that we were able to do it. It's hard to do and it's just so great, because both teams were able to feed off each other."

Despite scoring in only seven of 13 events on the final day, with just Knibb's victory, the Seminole women snapped Clemson's four-year hold on the title by scoring 111 points; 15 more than runner-up Notre Dame.

Ultimately it was FSU's depth and resiliency that made the difference. Overcoming a disqualification which wiped out a victory in the 4x100 relay, the `Noles needed all the little points they could muster. Anne Zagre and Nicole Setterington combined for nine in the 100-meter hurdles, placing third and sixth. Marecia Pemberton was fourth in the 100-meter dash (five points), while Georgia Peel and Hall combined for five more in the 1500, placing fifth and eighth. Zagre and Kali Davis-Whitefinished 5-8 in the 200-meter final for five more points.

"To the credit of the Linden Hall's and Pippa Woolven's of the world, they came back tired - Linden on the same day - and clinched the meet," Braman said. "I think it's good because we did hit a few potholes on the women's side, but were almost trying too hard. They weren't hiding under the bus.

"We needed them all, and that's a good lesson for them."

The story was similar on the men's side. Beyond the stars stepping to the forefront, contributions came from all corners as the Seminoles scored in nine of 14 events on the final day. FSU football players John Franklin III and Jalen Ramsey were called on to handle the leadoff and third legs of the winning 4x100 relay team. Franklin also chipped in an eighth-place finish in the 100. Garrett Singletary also used his sixth and final throw to grab an eigth-place javelin finish.

Freshman Chad DaCosta offset a surprising seventh-place finish in the pole vault by North Carolina by placing seventh in the discus. Freshman Michael Cherry and senior Alonzo Russell, each on the mend from injuries, added six more points by placing fifth and seventh in the 400. They also came back with strong legs on the bronze medal 4x400, which ran a season-best 3:06.76 at the end of a long day.

Then there was Glen Yarham, who while doubling back from a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters on Friday night, squeezed everything out of his body for three more points with his sixth-place finish in the 5000 meters. Yarham's performance set the stage for the 4x400 team, which needed to only finish fifth, to seal the title.

Knibb Delivers Penn Relays Gold.

Jamaica native scores FSU's first individual event win at meet since 2009.

April 25, 2014

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Kellion Knibb's sixth and final throw in Friday's championship section of the discus at the Penn Relays first prompted the Florida State sophomore to blurt out - in her rich Jamaican accent - "Shewwwwt!"

Knibb may not have been pleased with how the discus felt leaving her hand, but the crowd gathered at the throws facility outside Franklin Field knew they were witnessing something special.

"She threw it and it didn't feel good and it just kept carrying, and carrying," Florida State throws coach Dorian Scott said. "The crowd started going crazy and she started smiling like, `I can't believe it went so far.'

"It was a nice throw. It looked really special compared to everything else for the day."

By the time Knibb's final toss touched down, it had covered 56.49 meters - 185-feet, 4-inches; nearly three meters further than the runner-up. Not only had the two-time ACC champion produced the fourth longest throw in the history of the Penn Relays, which dates to 1895, but she smashed her own Florida State record by nearly three feet.

Knibb's victory, just six days after claiming her second consecutive ACC championship, came as something of a surprise based on her warm-up prior to the start of the competition.

"She looked tired and real lethargic," Scott said. "Her stand throws weren't the greatest. ... That (win) should give her a lot of confidence."

It was something of a breakthrough day for Knibb, who performed in front of a large contingent of fellow Jamaicans, many of whom come to Penn Relays annually to represent their high schools and colleges in what is the largest and one of the most prestigious track & field meets in the United States.

"In their minds, especially the ones that just came over, it's like a national championship among themselves," Scott said of the proliferation of Jamaicans competing at the meet. "If you're Jamaican and in school in the States, you want to put on a good show at Penn Relays. They put a lot of pressure on themselves."

A year ago, Knibb fouled all three of her throws at the meet, perhaps a victim of that pressure.

Scott, a two-time Olympian representing Jamaica in the shot put, is equally proud of his first Penn Relays champion.

"This (win) is a big deal for her," he said. "I know she's loving it."

Knibb is the first Seminole to win an individual event at the Penn Relays since Kimberly Williams claimed her fifth consecutive triple jump title back in 2009; a streak that included three titles as a Jamaican high schooler.

"In high school we always looked forward to it because we'd get to compete against the top Jamaican schools and also the American schools," said Williams, who won multiple NCAA championships at FSU and most recently claimed a bronze medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. "The level of competition was always up there. We'd just get excited to get out of the country and compete.

"The media is there and you have people from all over there. There are a lot of Jamaicans there as well, so you just want to show off your talent; show the Jamaicans who are not in Jamaica what they're missing."

Knibb wasn't the only Jamaican Seminole to perform well Friday at Penn Relays. Freshman Chad DaCosta, competing in the college division of the men's discus, placed second with a lifetime best mark 54.99 meters (180-5). That mark moved him to No. 6 on the all-time list at Florida State.

On Thursday, senior Chelsea Whalen scored a silver medal finish in the women's championship section of the javelin with a throw of 49.71m (163-1), while Briana Cherry-Bronson placed ninth in the hammer, narrowly missing her personal-best mark with a throw of 54.32m (178-2).

Madzivire's long jump win highlights solid showing at LaCoste Invitational.

STARKVILLE, MS - Junior Paul Madzivire made the most of his sixth and final long jump attempt Saturday at the Jace LaCoste Invitational, soaring 7.68 meters (25-2.50) for Florida State's lone victory of the day at Spencer Stadium.

Madzivire's leap, a lifetime-best outdoors, moved him into the No. 10 position on Florida State's all-time list and solidified his standing as an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier as he moved into a tie for sixth. The top 48 athletes in each individual event qualify for the East Preliminary meet.

In all, five Seminoles posted lifetime-best marks on the day.

Sophomore Otniel Teixeira's career-best time of 1:48.74 was good for a second place finish in the 800-meter run. The USF transfer and ACC Outdoor champion significantly improved his previous best of 1:49.15 which he recorded at the Seminole Invitational last month and also moved up in the East Preliminary rankings.

Clearing 16 feet for the first time in his career, freshman Cayman Ellis placed third in the pole vault. Ellis was credited with a mark of 4.90 meters (16-0.75). Fellow freshman Austin Droogsma joined the lifetime-best club in the shot put, placing fourth with a throw of 17.12 meters (56-2), which is the top mark among Seminoles this season.

In a rare outdoor mile, junior Chelsi Woodruff shattered her previous career-best by nearly 10 seconds, placing fifth in 4:53.54.

The Seminoles also received a second place finish from sophomore Der'Renae Freeman in the long jump (6.12m/20-1). Garrett Singletary was third in the javelin (56.82m/186-5) and Victoria Reiman placed sixth in the discus (44.08m/144-7).

Seminole distance women shine at Payton Jordan Invitational.

STANFORD, CA - Returning to the form they last flashed during the indoor season, Florida State's Pippa Woolven and Linden Hall flourished in the steeplechase and 1500-meter run, respectively, Sunday night at the Payton Jordan Invitational.

Woolven won section 3 of the steeplechase in a lifetime best time of 10:06.45, which moved her into fifth place on FSU's all-time list and more importantly, No. 6 on the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying rankings.

Hall was equally impressive, shaking off a two-month funk to finish second in section 3 of the 1500. The junior clocked a 4:16.42 around Angell Track and Cobb Field, identically matching her ninth-place finishing time at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Junior Colleen Quigley had to wait her turn for section 2 of the 1500 and did not disappoint, turning in a season-best time of 4:16.04, which was good for seventh overall and third among collegians. Quigley and Hall finished fifth and sixth overall among 45 collegians competing in the six sections of the 1500.

More importantly, Quigley moved to No. 4 on the NCAA East Preliminary qualifying list, while Hall is No. 6. They rank seventh and ninth, nationally among NCAA runners.

Overall, it was a solid day for the Seminoles, despite windy conditions and stiff competition.

"Pippa led from start to finish until she got cut off with 400 to go and got passed," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "With 200 to go, she came out of the water pit ticked off, went to the front and won the thing. ...

"She came here to compete, which was our whole goal, because Regionals isn't about time, it's about competing, which she did really, really well."

Woolven shaved five seconds off her previous career-best time, despite being saddled with setting her own pace. Despite running in the slow section, Woolven's time was fifth among collegians in the three-section field.

"It was one of the first races on the track and there was no atmosphere," said Harvey, who instructed the sophomore to, "go to the front and pound it. That's what she did. She definitely has sub-10 in her. She just needed that really good race to get excited and go back to work."

The same held true for Hall, who has been trying to find her groove since the NCAA Indoor Championships. The native Australian did just that, despite a poor pace set through the first 800 meters by the rabbit.

Undeterred, Hall stayed right in the front pack and used a big finishing kick to launch what she hopes will be an All-American finish to the season.

"She had a great position and just got a great ride," Harvey said of Hall. "Then with 400 to go they started kicking hard. ... She never doubted. She got jumped, but stayed in contact enough. With 120 to go...it was like something just turned on.

"For Linden, she needed this race to remind her that she is NCAA material; she should be in the conversation to be going to nationals. She needed a reminder of her talent. What a way to come back. I couldn't be more pleased."

The Seminole men sent a trio of athletes into action and were rewarded by a pair of season-best marks from Jakub Zivec and Zak Seddon, both of whom are battling back from injuries sustained during cross country season.

Zivec, a senior, ran 3:46.98 for 1500 meters, a two-second improvement over his previous best mark this season. Seddon, competing in just his second steeplechase race this season, pared 10 seconds from his ACC Championship meet time, recording a 9:06.88.

Both men will have to improve on their times over the next two weeks in order to climb into the top 48 and earn a berth to the NCAA East Preliminary meet.

Glen Yarham entered the 5000-meter race looking to break 14 minutes and land a second NCAA East qualifying mark, having already secured a spot in the 10,000. With 1,000 meters to go, Yarham was on target in his highly competitive section, but faded to 14:14.56 down the stretch.

Shining In The Twilight!

Track 'Noles pile up 15 victories in final home meet of season.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Friday began with Katja Vangsnes smashing her own school record in the hammer, with Dentarius Locke and Anne Zagre blistering their way to victories in the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles.

In short, the Seminole Twilight meet was just about exactly what the Florida State track & field teams needed as they prepare for the fast-approaching NCAA postseason.

"Other than the relays I was really happy with the day," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "The kids did a great job."

It took Harnden more than a minute to rattle off the list of accomplishments the Seminoles amassed in their final meet of the season at Mike Long Track. FSU athletes came away with victories in 15 events, and even more secured or improved their standing in the NCAA East Preliminary rankings, which was the primary goal of the meet.

Vangsnes got things going by bettering her school record with a winning hammer toss of 60.86 meters (199-8), while Markindey Sineus won the men's hammer (58.00m/190-3). Garrett Singletary improved to No. 9 on FSU's all-time list in the javelin with a winning throw of 61.67m (202-4).

The success continued with the action moving between the lane lines. Zagre ran away with the 100-meter hurdle victory in a wind-aided time of 12.87, which is the fourth-fastest time in the nation this season.

Locke, competing in the 100 for just the second time this season, did not waste the opportunity, dropping down a winning 10.06 which stands No. 3 nationally. Freshman teammate Cejhae Greene was third in a legal personal-best 10.32, which is well within NCAA East qualifying standards.

Senior Marecia Pemberton was second across the finish line in the women's 100, but the 11.38 she put down was her fastest time of the year. Zagre was third in 11.44.

In one of the most anticipated events of the meet, senior James Harris' 400-meter dash season debut ended in victory in 45.65; the fastest season-opening time of his career. Alonzo Russell was third in a season-best 46.31.

Ricardo Roy, Russell, Michael Cherry and Harris collaborated in a winning 4x400 relay effort (3:07.48).

FSU's middle-distance and distance women did their part as well, with Jess Butler claiming the 1500 (4:34.67) and Sydnee Over notching a personal-best in the 800 (2:09.54) for second place.

Back within the infield confines, Kellion Knibb scored another discus victory with an opening throw of 53.73 meters (176-3). Competing in her final home meet, senior Chelsea Whalen won the shot put (16.12m/52-10.75). On the men's side, freshman Austin Droogsmalikely earned an NCAA East berth with a third place and career-best throw of 17.44m (57-2.75).

Chadrick DaCosta and Droogsma finished 2-3 in the discus. DaCosta nearly matched his season-best (54.46/178-8), while Droogsma came through with a three-meter PR (50.70/166-4).

Der'Renae Freeman led a 1-4 finish by the Seminoles in the long jump, winning in 6.10 meters (20-0.25), followed by Grete Sadeiko (5.99/19-8), Maryke Brits (5.91/19-4.75) and Alejandra Martinez (5.56/18-3).

Teammates Hannah Acton and Karly Jackson shared first place in the pole vault, with each clearing 3.88 (12-8.75), while Cayman Ellis gave the `Noles an event sweep with the men's win in 4.70 (15-5).

With the night winding down, Chelsi Woodruff delivered the final win on the track, beating UNF's Elle Baker off the final water barrier to take the 3000 steeplechase in a lifetime best time of 10:28.31, which moved more comfortably within an NCAA East qualifying spot.

Paul Madzivire closed it out by soaring a career-best 7.87 meters (25-10) on his sixth and final attempt to win the long jump and improve his ranking to No. 7 nationally.

"That puts him in the chatter for an All-American spot and if he can do that at the (NCAA) meet he's going to score," Harnden said.

Zivec Secures NCAA Spot.

Senior runs lifetime-best 1500 at Virginia Challenge.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Jakub Zivec's injury-marred senior season at Florida State will include an NCAA postseason appearance, thanks to his 1500-meter performance Saturday night at the Virginia Challenge. Zivec ran a lifetime-best time of 3:44.32, which will assure the Czech Republic native a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary meet later this month at UNF. He is currently ranked 24th in the East, with the top 48 times in each event qualifying for the postseason.

Sophomore Zak Seddon also came into the meet hunting a qualifying mark in the steeplechase, and like Zivec, has been battling back from injury much of the season. Seddon finished fifth in a season-best 9:05.64, which leaves him 51st in the rankings. He will attempt to improve that position in the regular season finale at Georgia Tech next weekend.

First-year Seminole and former Wakulla High standout Stanley Linton placed fourth in his collegiate 10,000-meter debut (30:41.60).

Seddon Gets It Done!

Sophomore qualifies for NCAA East; Vangsnes breaks own hammer record.

May 16, 2014

ATLANTA, GA - Zak Seddon entered Friday night's 3000-meter steeplechase race at the Georgia Tech Invitational in dire need of at least a five-second improvement in order to earn a qualifying spot at the NCAA East Preliminary meet later this month.

Seddon proceeded to shave seven seconds off his previous season-best time, which was good for a 28-pot move up the NCAA East rankings. His runner-up finish in 8:58.53 was good for a second place finish, but more importantly vaulted him from 58th in the "That was a gutsy race," FSU coach Bob Braman said of Seddon, who has been on the comeback trail since suffering an injury that kept him out of indoor season competition. "He knew he had to qualify and finds himself in the lead earlier than he wanted to While Seddon was the lone Seminole to move into a qualifying spot on Friday, Florida State athletes had several strong performances. Katja Vangsnes improved her own school record in the women's hammer, winning with a season-best mark of 60.99 meters (20 Locke captured the 100-meter dash in 10.12, while Hall won the women's 1500 in 4:18.45.

"Katja was the field event athlete of the meet so far," Braman said. "Locke was Locke. He beat good people and looked in control. He was just doing exactly what he was supposed to do and was exactly on task.

"Linden Hall looked really good and Georgia (Peel) was right there."

Peel placed third in the 1500 in a season-best 4:21.68, and more importantly moved from 42nd to 31st in the East qualifying rankings for the event.

FSU freshman quarterback/sprinter John Franklin III turned in a lifetime-best time of 10.64 in the 100-meter dash preliminary round. The `Noles also received a second-place finishes from Anne Zagre in the 100-meter hurdles (13.16) and Paul Madzivire in "The one thing from the Friday perspective was, we didn't get a lot of lifetime bests, but we wanted to compete well," Braman said. "You're going to have to compete well in Jacksonville, whether it's raining or 100 degrees. It's real easy for us to come

A Regular Season Wrap.

Men's 400 duo, Knibb score wins focus turns toward NCAA postseason.

May 17, 2014

ATLANTA, GA - James Harris and Michael Cherry finished 1-2 in the 400-meter dash and Kellion Knibb captured the discus with her second-best throw of the season as the Florida State track & field teams put a wrap on the regular season Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Tech Invitational.

Crushing the fast heat field in the 400, Harris and Cherry turned in season-best times of 45.56 and 46.01, respectively, in their final tune-up for the NCAA East Preliminary meet. Shrugging off a slow start, Knibb unleashed a throw of 56.27 meters (184-7) on her sixth and final attempt.

"We had a strong day," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "I was most excited to see those national-level performances. James and Michael were simply dominant. It was great to see clutch performances from Kellion and Linden (Hall) as well."

Hall's produced a lifetime best time of 2:06.49 to place fourth in the 800-meter run. The time was nearly three seconds faster than the junior's previous fastest mark, set a year ago, when she went on to place ninth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 1500.

The meet served as a last-chance qualifier for the May 28-31 NCAA East Preliminary meet, which will be held at the University of North Florida. The top 48 athletes in individual events and the top 24 relay teams qualify for the first round of the NCAA postseason.

Zak Seddon was the lone Seminole outside the top 48 entering the two-day meet at the George C. Griffin who raced his way in the East Preliminary meet.

FSU senior Marsha Ario lhad hoped to break through in the 400-meter hurdles, and though she came up short, she closed her career with a personal-best mark (1:00.64).

"We're getting healthy at just the right time and that will be huge for the NCAA first round in two weeks," said Braman.

Four Bound For NCAA's!

Track 'Noles strike for success on first day of East Preliminary meet.

May 29, 2014

JACKSONVILLE, FL- As batting averages go, the Florida State track & field teams knocked Thursday's opening NCAA East Preliminary meet competition out of the park.

Of the 19 Seminoles competing in 15 events at Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus, four secured trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships and 10 others advanced to quarterfinal round action. That's a .737 success race in 19 at-bats, and the reason why spirits were high around the Seminoles' team camp.

"We've had a really good day," Braman said, after nearly 12 hours at the track, thanks to a three-hour meet delay for lightning. "I was really pleased with the way everybody came really focused. This is a tough competition and we didn't take anybody for granted and competed well. We had a lot of personal or season-bests, like Michael Cherry in the 400, and even when we didn't, we looked good in qualifying."

Katja Vangsnes (hammer), Paul Madzivire and Der'Renae Freeman (long jump), and Hannah Walker (10,000) are all headed to Eugene, Ore. for the June 11-14 NCAA Championships after the first of three days of competition. Perhaps even more noteworthy, all four will be making the trip to the spring finale for the first time in their specialty events.

Vangsnes was the first to breakthrough and in the process, set a bit of history, becoming the first NCAA Championships qualifier in the hammer in the history of the women's program. The Oslo, Norway native and first-year Seminole did that by placing sixth with a top mark of 60.63 meters (198-11).

"I felt pretty confident because my practices have been good lately, but it's always nerve-wracking, thinking you have to do it this day on those three throws," said Vangsnes, who quieted her early nerves and proceeded to improve with each round. "It was a really long day, waiting on the weather delay.

"I'm happy with how I progressed, that I started off with a 58 (meter throw), relaxed a little bit and threw 59.53. I knew I had to throw farther to make it to nationals in the finals, but when I threw 60 meters [on her fifth throw], I was pretty sure that I made it."

Not long after Vangsnes secure her plane ticket to Eugene, Madzivire delivered on the long jump runway. Needing a strong third attempt just to secure a place in the finals, the junior from Zimbabwe nailed a mark of 7.56m (24-9.75), which carried him from out of the hunt and on to nationals with a seventh-place finish.

While the lengthy lightning delay pushed the competition late into the night, it did not prevent junior Hannah Walker from delivering in the final track event of the night. Walker comfortably worked her way up to the front of the 10,000-meter run, then pulled away from the 48-runner pack in a breakaway group, finishing fifth in 33:41.

Sophomore Der'Renae Freeman was the last Seminole to punch her ticket to the June 11-14 championship meet on the opening day, overcoming a wildly erratic performance on the runway to nail a second attempt mark of 6.30 meters (20-8) to place fifth. It was her only legal jump of the day.

In addition to the completed events, the Seminoles moved 10 runners on to the quarterfinal round of their respective events, including the top qualifying marks in three events.

Senior Dentarius Locke rolled to his 100-meter heat win in 10.17, which was .24 seconds faster than the No. 2 qualifier., a also performed admirably in preliminary heats. Fellow senior James Harris impressively led a trio of Seminole quarterfinals qualifiers, checking in with a meet-best time of 45.58. On the women's side, Georgia Peel wiped six seconds off her season-best time to claim the top qualifying spot in the 1500 (4:15.88).

"Locke was dominant," Braman said. "Georgia (Peel) didn't PR, but that was probably the best we've seen her race and her second-best time at Florida State."

Harris will be joined in Friday's quarterfinals by teammates Michael Cherry (45.96) and Alonzo Russell (46.65), who qualified sixth and 16th, respectively. Cejhae Greene will join Locke in the 100 quarterfinals after qualifying on time (10.53) Senior Marecia Pemberton also advanced on time in the women's 100 (11.79).

Linden Hall, who was ninth at the NCAA Championships last season, advanced to the 1500 quarterfinals with a time of 4:22.98. On the men's side, senior Jakub Zivec took the first step toward making his first NCAA Championships appearance in the 1500, placing second in his heat (3:50.69).

ACC 800-meter champion Otniel Teixeira in the 800 patiently waited to make his final move, and automatically qualified in 1:49.60.

Not only did the qualifying and advancing athletes perform at a high level, refshirt freshman Jake Burton posted an 800 PR (1:49.40) in his season finale. Austin Droogsma needed a late scratch to be accepted as the 48th entrant in the shot put and promptly finished 11 spots ahead of where he was seeded.

"Now what we've got to do is come back the next day, for those who have to compete again, and really put the nail in the coffin and make sure we can get on the plane and get going," Braman said. "It feels like we're going to the right way, but we've still got two long days of competition left with some weather challenges that we're going to have to overcome like we did today."

Record Night For Knibb, 'Noles.

Discus mark, seven more NCAA qualifiers carry the day.

May 30, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Kellion Knibb left no doubt that she was going to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The sophomore had already locked in a trip to Eugene, Ore. for the June 11-14 meet when she stepped up for her sixth and final discus throw Friday night.

Knibb let out a scream as she unleashed her final throw of the East Preliminary competition and watched the discus sail into the night. When it finally landed, Jamaica had a new national record holder, and Knibb had long-awaited redemption after falling short of an NCAA berth last season.

Her mark of 61.34 meters (201-3) not only broke her home country's record, but the Atlantic Coast Conference and UNF facility records, as well as her own Florida State record by a whopping five meters (16 feet).

"I really liked the vibe that was going on out here," said Knibb, who led the competition early, but was in fourth place before she put together her magical throw. "It was smooth and as coach [Dorian Scott] always says, the good throws always feel easy. It was easy. I didn't have to try that hard to get it out.

"The whole competition was kind of in pieces so all I had to do for my last throw was put it together, and that's what I did. I came together perfectly."

It was the marquee performance on a day that seemed to come together perfectly for the Seminoles, who pushed their NCAA Championship qualifying total to 11, adding seven on the second day of competition.

"That was a special moment," FSU coach Bob Braman said of Knibb's record-smashing throw." It's not quite Walter Dix's collegiate record, but it's in that special stratosphere. At regions you always have somebody that reaches out that makes that next step. We have a lot people who can qualify, but who is going to put their name out there as the next big thing. ... She reaches out and does it now.

"It's a great, great credit to coach Scott."

The Florida State men accounted for five of those NCAA qualifying spots, including a pair of surprises.

Senior Dentarius Locke posted the fastest time (10.03-w) in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Michael Cherry upstaged senior teammate James Harris in the 400-meter dash. Cherry ran the seventh-fastest time in school history (45.37), good for the No. 4 qualifying mark, while the 2013 All-American, Harris (45.75), also punched his ticket.

Freshman Cejhae Greene and sophomore Otniel Teixieira entered the meet seeded 19th and 20th, in the 100 and 800, respectively. They walked away from Hodges Stadium among the 12 qualifiers moving on. Greene ran 10.33 to grab the final spot by four-thousandths of a second. Teixeira was tactically brilliant, blowing through the field up the home stretch to advance automatically with his third-place heat finish (1:49.24).

"For a group that came here to move to the next step, we came, we executed and moved on," FSU associate head coach and sprints mentor, Ken Harnden said. "Cejhae Greene going through as a freshman - that's a special move."

As for Cherry, who has posted new personal-bests in three consecutive 400-meter races, Harnden also had a special message.

"It's what we know he can do. It's not a surprise," he said of the two-time high school national champion. "I know what he can be and what he's ready to do. I told him after the race, `You can be very happy with this but you can't be satisfied, because you're better than that.' He is, which says a lot. He opened a new chapter today and it's going to be special."

Teixeira's performance in the third heat of the 800 was as beautiful as it was improbable. He bided his team through the first 600 meters on the rail, then shot like a bolt past four runners over the final 50 meters.

"Coach just said to run to qualify and I just went with the confidence and everything worked out perfectly," said Teixeira, who now has an NCAA bid to go along with an ACC title in his first season as a Seminole. "I was confident I was going to make it. ... I know it's coaching and me working hard, but making it to NCAA's is a blessing."

A lengthy weather delay for lightning led to a one-hour adjustment to the running schedule, leading to a second consecutive late night finish. That did not deter sophomore Pippa Woolven, who shattered her lifetime-best time in the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:54.24 - fourth-fastest in FSU history - and automatically qualified by virtue of her second-place heat finish.

"Pippa Woolven was fantastic; a big breakthrough and probably a national scoring time if you do it on the day," Braman said.

The Seminoles will try and add to their championship-qualifying total Saturday, when FSU's men and men get the action started on the track in the 4x100 relay at 6 p.m.

For the Seminole women, Anne Zagre will compete in the quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles, moving on after posting the eighth-best time (13.22) Friday. Freshman Kali Davis-White also advanced to the quarterfinals in the 200-meter dash on time (23.73). They join Georgia Peel and Linden Hall, as they attempt to lock in top-12 finishes in the 1500. Chelsea Whalen and Lakitta Johnson will also compete in the shot put.

Jakub Zivechas reached of the quarterfinals of the men's 1500, while Chad DaCosta is slated to go in the discus. The FSU men's 4x400 relay will close out the qualifying action on the track at 9:25 p.m.

"We continue to have an outstanding meet," Braman concluded. "Tomorrow the big, big things are the 1500-meter kids. I'd like to think that all three should make it the way they've been racing. Both 4x100 relays should get in. I'm excited about the men's 4x1 getting though. I'm not nervous about it or scared. If we can't get out here and throw down 39-low, then we're not going to do it. I think we have a relay team that's going to be a national challenger with those pieces going the way they're going now. And of course, who can't be excited about our 4x400.

"We've got some fun tomorrow."

Relays Rule On Final Day.

'Noles will send 14 individuals, three relay teams to NCAA Championships.

May 31, 2014

By Bob Thomas, Seminoles.com

JACKSONVILLE, FL - With seniors Dentarius Locke and James Harris handling the anchor legs on two NCAA Championship-qualifying relay teams, Florida State's track & field teams put an exclamation point on their three-day East Preliminary performance Saturday night.

"What a great way to close the first round with a season-best 4x400 relay," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "We have a chance to put some big points on the board at Nationals. ...

"We really didn't miss much the whole weekend, and when we did, it wasn't for lack of commitment or effort. As a coach I couldn't be more pleased with the whole three days."

The Seminoles came into the final day with 11 individual event qualifiers and added two more - Linden Hall in the 1500 and Anne Zagre in the 100-meter hurdles - to go along the men's and women's 4x100 relay teams and the nightcap men's 4x400 qualifying effort.

In all, the Seminoles will send 14 individuals and three relay teams on to the June 11-14 NCAA Championship meet at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Grete Sadeiko had previously qualified in the heptathlon.

Locke helped get the day started off, lifting the Seminoles from sixth-place to second on the anchor leg of the 4x100, in a season-best time of 39.20, despite running out of lane 2 at Hodges Stadium. In the process, FSU's quartet of Cejhae Greene, Harris, Paul Madzivire and Locke, kicked a seemingly season-long relay jinx to the curb, recording the fourth-fastest time of the 24 teams assembled.

"It felt good to actually get the stick around," said Locke, who anchored his first relay since 2011. "We didn't think about time too much. We wanted to make sure we got the stick around and we placed in a good area. We were in lane 2 and our biggest competition [Florida] was in lane 9, so went out there focused on what we needed to do and executed."

Of course it took an extraordinary effort by Locke to complete that execution.

"It felt different being last," said Locke, who was the No. 1 qualifier in the 100 on Friday. "Having my mom in the stands really motivated me. I saw a few guys that posed a threat for us getting to nationals, so I had to give it my all and make sure the `Noles got there. That sets us up pretty well."

The FSU women's 4x100 quartet of lone senior Marecia Pemberton, along with Zagre, Der'Renae Freeman and Kali Davis-White followed right behind the men, qualifying with the seventh-fastest time (44.55) in the field.

"Our ladies did a great job," added Braman. "Once this group gets their rhythm down they can score at Nationals."

Hall advanced in the women's 1500 out of a stacked second heat, by finishing fourth (4:16.17) in a race that went out slowly and turned into a flat-out sprint over the final two laps.

"Linden was fantastic in that tactical race," Braman said of the junior, who is looking to improve on her ninth-place NCAA finish in 2013. "That'll serve her well in Eugene."

Zagre qualified automatically by placing third in her heat of the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best legal time of 13.03.

In the final event of the night, the Seminole men lined up in the 4x400 alongside ACC rivals North Carolina and Pitt. Solid legs by Alonzo Russell, Michael Cherry and Otniel Teixeira left the `Noles in fourth place, but Harris dropped a 44.91 split over the final 400, leading the quartet to a season-best time of 3:04.95. It is the seventh-fastest time in school history.

"Oh my gosh, it was a good race," Harris said, who dropped the fourth-fastest anchor split of the night to lead the `Noles to a third-place heat finish and an automatic berth. "It was really bunched up on the back straight. I overthought my move a little bit, but we just ran a season-best. It was Otniel's first time running with us and he got banged up, and we still came out third in our heat. I'm excited about what we're going to do when we get to Eugene."

So is Braman.

"I felt like we had a really good championship meet," Braman said. "We gained momentum. The month of May has been all about getting healthy and having momentum going forward. ... We had some really, really breakout things happen."

Locke is moving on to the finals in the 100-meter dash, winning his heat in 10.13 for a spot in the finals. Harris is advancing automatically as the second-place heat finisher in the 400, posting a time of 45.75.

It was a good day to have previous championship experience at Historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.

"Locke looked very good in a well-executed heat win," FSU coach Bob Braman said." "He looked like the veteran that he is.

"I was really impressed with James Harris' race. He was in a do-or-die situation and dug deep to secure an automatic spot in the 400".

There were plenty of ups and downs for the Seminoles throughout the sun-splashed day, but nothing rivaled the performance of the women's 4x100 relay. The quartet of Marecia Pemberton, Anne Zagre, Jande Pierce and Kali Davis-White are heading to the finals after posting a season-best time of 44.17. It's a place the Seminoles have not been since Pemberton, now a fifth-year senior, was a sophomore on the sixth-place team in 2011.

"I'm extremely happy," associate head coach Ken Harnden said of his relay group. "Any time you run a season-best at the biggest meet of the year you have to be thrilled. The ladies executed the plan to a T."

And advancing is the name of the game in championship competition.

"I just wanted to execute," said Locke, whose legal time of 10.13 was the slowest winning mark of the three heats. "A few things went wrong but the race went the way it was supposed. I'll go back, work on a few things and be ready for the final on Friday."

Baylor freshman Trayvon Brommell - who like Locke is from the Tampa Bay area - was the beneficiary of a heavily wind-aided 9.92 for the fastest qualifying mark of the day. Locke's heat was the only one that did not have the benefit of illegal tailwind, and consequently, he is the seventh-fastest qualifier for Friday's final.

The NCAA runner-up a year ago in the 100, Locke was asked if experience will be an advantage in the final.

"Advantages? If I was five meters closer to the finish line, but it's 100 meters for everybody, so there's no advantage," Locke said. "Once you line up - freshmen, seniors, juniors - it doesn't matter. Now everybody is in the same race, lanes 1 through 8. The wind is the same. We're going to see who is the fastest guy.

"It's a new race; top eight and a new ballgame."

Harris was also an automatic qualifier by finishing second in his heat to Oregon's Michael Berry (45.51), and will enter Friday's final - like Locke - was the seventh-fastest time with the aim on improving last year's fifth-place finish.

It was an especially daunting day for a host of Seminoles making their first NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance, and nothing brought that to the fore more clearly than sophomore Pippa Woolven's misfortune in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Despite laboring to a seventh-place finish in a loaded first heat, her time of 10:07.99 was well within range of advancing to finals, based on past years.

By the narrowest of margins - .01 seconds - Woolven wound up one spot shy of advancing, losing out to the sixth-place finisher in heat two (10:07.98).

"Pippa has had a great season highlighted by an outstanding first-round NCAA performance," Braman said. "I've never seen a qualifying distance race at the national championship separated by one-hundredth of second in all of my years of coaching, and with it coming from the second heat she didn't have a chance to protect it."

Sophomore Der'Renae Freeman did not make it to the finals in the women's long jump, with a best mark of 5.97 meters (19-7). Fellow sophomore Otniel Teixeira's NCAA debut in the 800 meters ended with a semifinal round exit after running 1:49.59, which ranked 13th in the field of 24. The USF transfer came into the meet with the slowest qualifying mark.

Sophomore Katja Vangsnes, competing in her first championship since joining the Seminoles from Norway in January, failed to post a mark in three attempts in the hammer.

Freshman Cejhae Greene ran 10.30 in the first heat of the 100-meter semifinals, while classmate Michael Cherry was a late injury scratch in the 400-meter dash.

Entering the meet with the fourth-fastest time following the NCAA Preliminary qualifying meet, the men's 4x100 left with a disappointing early exit as the team of Alonzo Russell, Harris, Greene and Locke, could not overcome one tentative baton exchange, leading to a sub-par time of 39.56.

"I felt really bad for our 4x100 relay and the three seniors who've lived and died for our program," Braman said. "But that's the nature of the event. The margin of error is razor thin at that speed.

"Highlight of the day is the women's 4x100 relay. They had great exchanges and upset some extremely accomplished teams to make the final."

The `Noles will get at it again tomorrow, including fourth-seeded freshman Grete Sadeiko in the heptathlon, sophomore discus star Kellion Knibb and junior Paul Madzivire in the long jump. Junior Linden Hall will try and make her way back to the 1500-meter finals for a second consecutive year, while junior Anne Zagre is aiming for a finals spot in the 100-meter hurdles. Hannah Walker will close out Thursday's competition in the 10,000-meter final.

"We missed some scoring opportunities on both sides but that's what the national meet is all about," Braman said. "We have some great scoring opportunities in front of us and we need to snag as many of them as we can over the next three days."

Knibb Puts 'Noles On Board!

FSU soph is first NCAA women's discus scorer in program history.

June 12, 2014

EUGENE, OR - With sophomore Kellion Knibb making a little history Thursday at Historic Hayward Field, the Florida State track & field teams have their first points of the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Knibb became the first Seminole to score at the championships in the women's discus in school history, placing fifth on the strength of her second attempt throw of 55.06 meters (180-8).

"Even though I didn't do as well as I wanted I came out as an All-American, so I'm pretty happy with my performance," said Knibb, who was the first Seminole to reach the finals in the discus since Makiba Batten in 2000. "On the second throw I was trying to make the finals because the first throw wasn't all that good."

Trailing only eventual champions Shelbi Vaughn of Texas A&M entering the finals, Knibb was still clinging to third place entering the final round of throws, when she was eclipsed by two others. That led to her disappointment, but does not temper what promises to be a bright future, moving forward after grabbing first-team All-American honors.

"For Kellion to go from not qualifying (for NCAAs in 2013) to fifth-place is a credit to her toughness and resolve," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "She's that good [to be disappointed]. She's going to compete for a national championship and think she felt like she could as well today. ...

"She's the first-ever to do that for the Seminoles, but by the time she's done that will be a footnote. That won't be her high-water mark. She has a fantastic future ahead of her."

As for the Seminoles' future at this year's NCAA Championships, Anne Zagre and Linden Hall were busy providing some uplifting moments, advancing to Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles and 1500-meter run, respectively.

Hall was the first to hit the track, competing in a loaded second heat and she left no doubt from the start that returning to the finals for a second consecutive year - after placing ninth last year - was firmly within her grasp. The Australia native's third-place first heat finish in 4:17.58, which was third-fastest among all 12 qualifiers, positions her well for a run at the podium. It also puts to rest the disappointment of not getting to the finals at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile.

"I feel like I learned a lot least year being here and running at regionals," Hall said. "After indoors, I definitely came here with, `I'm not letting that happen again.' It was an awful feeling and took a long time to get over."

Zagre, a junior who narrowly missed a spot in the finals last year, took control of her own destiny, riding a great start to a second-place finish in the first heat and advancing automatically advancing. Belgium's national champion laid down a season-best legal time of 12.97 - third-fastest on the day - to secure a berth.

"Anne is firing on all cylinders right now at the right time," said FSU assistant coach Brandon Hon. "She executed her race plan for the prelims. She doesn't need to make any real adjustments for the finals; just turn up the volume."

"She was really, really focused," Braman said of Hall. "It was not going to happen that she wasn't going to make the final. She runs really well here at Hayward Field and she looked like when it came time to go and she was able to answer the bell."

In addition to the bright spots on a sometimes-dreary day, several Seminoles saw their seasons come to a close in disappointing fashion. Junior Paul Madzivire was unable to advance to the long jump finals, with his best mark of 7.35 meters (24-1.24) coming up just .01 shy of the last spot.

The injury forcing Michael Cherry to withdraw from the 400-meter semifinals on Wednesday also took a toll on the 4x400 relay, which ran a respectable 3:10.99 despite a makeshift lineup, drawing the curtain on senior Alonzo Russell's career. Russell gave the `Noles the lead after leadoff leg, but teammates Otniel Teixeira, Ricardo Roy and Chris Rose Jr., were unable to hold it.

Freshman Grete Sadeiko's high hopes in the heptathlon got off to a shaky start and never improved significantly. She will enter the final three events 242 points out of eighth place, though her Friday schedule does include two of her best events - the long jump and javelin.

Friday's action will also draw the curtain on the careers of two of Florida State's most distinguished performers. Dentarius Locke and James Harris will compete in the 100- and 400-meter finals, hoping to put the Seminole men on the scoreboard.

"You're not going to find two better human beings and two better leaders than those two guys," Braman said of Locke and Harris. "They care about the rest of the team. All I want them to care about tomorrow is themselves, and I'm sure coach Harnden has prepared them to just focus on their job. Ken does a great job with that and he will have them ready."

All-American Closers!

Seniors Locke, Harris finish second, sixth in final races as Seminoles.

June 13, 2014

EUGENE, OR - It is both sad and ironic that two of the top careers in Florida State men's track & field history came to a conclusion Friday at Historic Hayward Field in events where the smallest imperfections have a way of taking a large toll.

Dentarius Locke was brilliant throughout the transition phase of his 100-meter dash final and James Harris ran the best 300 meters of his life in the 400-meter final at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The seniors, however, were forced to settle with something a little less than what that came across country for in their collegiate finales.

For the second consecutive year, Locke was hoisting silver on the podium; his 10.02 performance in the final, just five one-hundredths of a second behind winner Trayvon Bromell of Baylor (9.97), who set the world junior record.

Less than an hour later, Harris found himself in front of a star-studded field in the 400 as the runner's came off what the University of Oregon crowd commonly calls the "Bowerman Curve." The last 100 meters, however, took its toll as Harris faded to sixth in 45.64.

And with a pair of first-team All-American honors and 11 team points on the board, Florida State's 2014 NCAA Championships came to a close on the men's side, in lock-step with the careers of two sprinters who have carried the Seminoles for two years.

"I'm extremely proud of Locke and Harris; two of our best team leaders ever," FSU coach Bob Braman, whose men are tied for 15th with one day remaining in the four-day meet. "Harris went for the win and that's what you come to Nationals to do. If he were a bit more conservative he might've gotten third, but I'm proud that he ran the way he did. And he ran an outstanding time.

"Dentarius was just a tick off at the start and had to run down Bromell. Another 10 meters and perhaps he wins. What a fantastic two-year career he's had. Credit coach [Ken] Harnden for the progress those two young men had."

Neither Locke nor Harris made excuses for coming up shy of fulfilling their dreams, though that should not come as a surprise.

"Those guys have been an absolute pleasure to coach on the track the last two and three years," said Harnden, FSU's associate head coach in charge of the sprints. "They've been the life and soul of this team. Since we lost the Maurice Mitchell, Ngoni Makusha, Brandon Byram and those guys, we needed some new life and those guys [Locke and Harris] came in and became the face of this program.

"To lead this program the way they have they should be commended every day. We're going to be very sad to see them go and they're going to be remembered in FSU history. They both have a place there that's pretty special."

Locke came into the final looking for his second title of his senior year, after claiming the NCAA Indoor 60-meter championship. The Tampa, Fla. native said all week that there were no favorites in the field, including Bromell, the sensational freshman who is also from the Tampa Bay area.

"It was just a close finish," said Locke, who was battling Bromell elbow-to-elbow up the track in adjoining lanes. "I went out there and tried my best and as you can see it was very tight. ... "I felt like I got out good and transitioned well. I just went out there and got real tight at the end. ... It's disappointing, but you can't get too mad about that. You can't go back and change time. Things happened."

"He ran from 10 to 90 (meters) better than I have ever seen him run," Harnden said. "For a kid that has been through what he's been through, it has been an amazing year and he's done a helluva job. I love coaching the kid. He's an absolutely special human being."

Locke is also the Seminoles' 12th first-team All-American in the 100 in the last 10 years under Harnden's direction.

Harris' finale was a rousing success, with the Lanett, Ala. native finally grasping - and executing - the race plan through the first 300 meters.

"We've been trying to get that out of him for two straight years," Harnden said. "If we could have gotten that consistently, I think he runs with those guys straight through the line. He got to 300 meters and he was in a different place than he's used to being. It caught him by surprise. ... He took the fight to them and that's exactly what we asked him to do. We asked him to get to 300 meters and make it a man's race and he did that and they were just better than him on the day."

Harris admitted he was surprised to find himself in front of the field of eight when he got to the home stretch.

"I didn't see anything, then when I finally saw them [the pack] move I kind of panicked and got to sitting low in my race and I felt like everything started working backwards," Harris said. "That's the start coach Ken [Harnden] and I have been talking about the whole year and I finally got it. I wasn't used to being ahead at that point. ...

"I was trying to hurry up and reach to get to the finish line and I didn't give myself a chance to race to the finish line. I just started reaching too much. I was working too much in the wrong direction."

His consolation prize is becoming FSU's ninth first-team All-American in the 400, pushing the two-year Seminoles' career All-American count to 12.

While Friday's spotlight centered on the Florida State men - after Grete Sadeiko bowed out of the heptathlon with an injury - the Seminole women will take center stage on Saturday. With fifth-place discus All-American Kellion Knibb's four team points already on the board, the `Noles are gunning for their best NCAA Outdoor Championship finish since placing fourth in 2009.

Fifth-year senior Marecia Pemberton will lead the 4x100 meter relay into action beginning at 5:10 p.m. (ET), followed by Linden Hall in the 1500 final (5:29) and Anne Zagre in the 100-meter hurdles (3:19). All three races will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

"Tomorrow it's about the ladies, with three more scoring opportunities and a chance at a top-10 finish," Braman said. "Linden and Anne are on top of their game right now and I like their chances at top-three finishes. I'm sure the 4x1 ladies will run a season-best time -- perhaps a Top 5-6 finish for them."

Big Finish For Ladies!

Hall leads final day charge with help from Zagre and relay team.

June 14, 2014

EUGENE, OR - With Linden Hall leading a final day charge, the Florida State women posted their best finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2009, tying for 16th place with 15 points.

Hall's third-place finish in the 1500-meter run marked the best showing for the Seminole women, who got a sixth-place finish from Anne Zagre in the 100-meter hurdles and a seventh-place showing from the 4x100 relay team Saturday at Historic Hayward Field.

In a great show of patience, Hall positioned herself for a big finish, steering mostly clear from a bunched pack in a race that went out strategically slow. Aiming to improve on last season's ninth-place showing, Hall moved alongside eventual champion Shelby Houlihan of Arizona State with 400 meters remaining and held her ground.

The junior from Australia finished in 4:19.33, extending the Seminoles' streak of consecutive first-team All-Americans in the 1500 to a ninth consecutive year.

"I don't really remember a lot," said Hall, who started in lane 1. "It was kind of slow and pushy and all over the place. I was trying not to think too much, just run and not let anyone pass me.

"After about 400 [meters] I kind of got wide on the outside and was running in lane 3, but it was nice to be clear of the mess."

Women's distance coach Karen Harvey could not have been more proud.

"She made some great moves to get to the front with 500 or 600 meters to go," Harvey said. "I yelled at her, `You need to be brave right now,' and she came right up. The last 300 meters she was matching [the leaders], stumbles with 200 again, but she kept coming.

"Everything we've done in training in the last month, she did in that race right there. ... It couldn't happen to a better person."

Shortly after Hall gave the `Noles their most points in a single event, Zagre stepped into the blocks as a first-time finalist in the 100-meter hurdles, just one year after not advancing from the semifinals.

Chasing from the start, Zagre ran her fastest all-conditions time as a Seminole, closing in a wind-aided 12.80 for sixth against an extremely strong field. She is the first Seminole to score in the 100-meter hurdles at the championships since Kim Batten's fourth-place finish 1991.

"If she had five more meters and she would have picked off two more," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "I'm proud of the way she dug down to get those key points."

"I'm really happy to finish top-eight, but the goal was top-three," Zagre said afterward.

"I couldn't be more proud of Anne, closing out the NCAA Championships for us with big points in the hurdles," FSU hurdles coach Brandon Hon said. "She's been a great leader and a blessing the entire season and today was no exception."

The day begin with fifth-year senior Marecia Pemberton handling the leadoff leg in the 4x100 relay, where she was joined by three underclassmen and NCAA Outdoor first-timers - sophomores Der'Renae Freeman and Jande Pierce, and freshman Kali Davis-White. Running out of lane 1 as the No. 8 seed, the `Noles came home seventh in 44.82, marking the 13th time an FSU team has grabbed first-team All-American honors in the event.

"What a fantastic job for the 4x1 ladies," Braman said. "Coach [Ken] Harnden shuffled the lineup to save Anne for the hurdle final and it worked really well. I'm most happy for Marecia Pemberton to go out as an All-American after two major surgeries."

With the Seminoles scoring in three events on the final day, to go along with Kellion Knibb's fifth-place showing in the discus on Thursday, the women posted their best team finish since the 2009 squad was fourth. They also finished higher than the FSU men - the `Noles tied for 20th with 11 points - for the first time since 2004.

"This is the start of something big for our women," Braman said. "Lots of first-timers that didn't shy away from the moment."
