No. 4 FSU Knocks Off No. 3 USC and Loyola Marymount.

The Seminoles defeated the Trojans, 3-2, and the Lions, 5-0.

LOS ANGELES, CA - The fourth-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team kicked off the 2013 season with victories over Loyola Marymount and third-ranked Southern California on Sunday at Merle Norman Stadium.

The Seminoles became the first team to win a dual match at the Trojans' new arena, sweeping Loyola Marymount, 5-0, in the morning before edging past USC, 3-2, in the afternoon.

"We beat the third-ranked team in the country at their place, so that is a huge win for this program," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "Marija (Milosavljevic) and the Pellitteri's really stood out to me. Marija was really strong and had a ton of blocks. They had great days. Although they lost against USC, Katherine (Plessy) and Melanie (Pavels) also played really well. USC has very athletic No. 1 and No. 2 pairs. There was a great crowd. The weather was fantastic. It was a really fun day."

Florida State grabbed a 3-0 lead against USC by winning in two sets on Courts 3, 4 and 5. The team of Milosavljevic, a senior, and sophomore Jace Pardon clinched the victory with a 21-17, 21-10 victory over the Trojan duo of Eve Ettinger and Alexa Stonish.

Freshman Julie Brown and sophomore Sarah Wickstrom beat Brooke Fournier and Natasa Silikovic, 24-22, 21-10, on Court 4 to stake the Noles to a 1-0 lead over USC right before Seminole sisters, sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and freshman Nina Pellitteri, downed Sam Hirschmann and Sydney Seau, 21-19, 21-19 on Court 5.

FSU's No. 1 team of junior Aurora Davis and senior Fatma Yildirim fell to USC's No. 1 tandem of Kirby Burnham and Bria Russ, 21-16, 21-15, while Pavels, a sophomore, and Plessy, a freshman, lost on Court 2 to Katie Fuller and Stevi Robinson in a hard fought three-set affair 21-16, 18-21, 15-12.

The Seminoles cruised past the Lions in the day's first match with Pavels-Plessy, Brown-Wickstrom and the Pellitteri's winning in two quick sets.

Florida State will return to action on Monday just a few miles away against No. 2-ranked Long Beach State and No. 6-ranked UCLA at the 49ers' sand volleyball courts.

FSU will face UCLA at 11 a.m. PST before clashing with Long Beach State in a rematch from the 2012 AVCA National Championship Semifinals where the 49ers defeated the Seminoles twice by scores of 4-1 and 3-2 in Gulf Shores, Ala.

"It's going to be a battle tomorrow, too," Corso said. "UCLA is in its first season with a sand team and they will be a wildcard, but we expect them to be a very good team. We know Long Beach State is a great team. They return nearly everybody from their team last year. It will be two really tough matchups."

March 15, 2013

CHULA VISTA, CA - The No. 4-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team improved to 5-2 in dual matches this season by cruising past CSU Bakersfield, 5-0, on Friday on Day Two of the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge held at the US Olympic Training Center.

All five Seminole pairs advanced to Saturday's final day of bracket play at the event, as well.

Florida State's only loss suffered on the day was when sophomore Jace Pardon and senior Marija Milosavljevic edged teammates senior Fatma Yildiriim and junior Aurora Davis, 24-22, 21-12 during in the Gold Division bracket play. Both teams will continue in the double-elimination bracket on Saturday.

In the Silver Division, the teams of sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Katherine Plessy, sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and freshman Nina Pellitteri, and senior Mallory Kiley and sophomore Sarah Wickstrom all went 1-0 in the single-elimination tournament.

"Today was the first day where we have really played to our potential," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "Everything clicked today. We were strong and consistent. Tomorrow could be long day as each pair could play anywhere from one to four matches.

"Jace and Marija were spectacular today. Marija had a bunch of great blocks and Jace played very inspired. It was a lot of fun. We are looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow."

The Seminoles began the day by sweeping the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield, winning each match in two sets.

Seminoles Cruise to Victories In Panama City.

Aurora Davis and Fatma Yildirim took first place as the Seminoles finish with the top five teams in the tournament.

PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL – The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team headed four hours west on Sunday to defeat Gulf Coast State College in a championship bracket style of play. Aurora Davis and partner Fatma Yildirim defeated teammates Jace Pardon and Marija Milosavljevic to win first place.

The event was originally slated for Saturday before storm threats rescheduled the event to Sunday. Teams woke up to heavy winds forcing the match to be moved from Panama City Beach inland to the Pier Plaza to make it considerably less windy.

“It was still a really nice venue at Pier Plaza, a lot of action going around,” Florida State Head Coach Danalee Corso said. “It’s good to play at different venues and different kinds of surfaces. We got all the volleyball in that we needed with no problem.”

Coach Corso was excited to have her team play on an actual beach surface, but the move didn’t affect the girls mentally and the results were proof.

“We did get to practice down at the beach, which was one of the main things for us coming to Panama City and scheduling here. You don’t get to play on a natural beach very often,” Corso said. “This being a lifestyle sport, we really wanted to compete at the beach and we did get to practice there. The new venue was close enough that you could actually hear the waves still. It was basically being at the beach.”

The match consisted of six pairs from Florida State, four pairs from Gulf Coast State College, and one women’s amateur team pair. Each of the teams were split randomly into three pools to determine their seeds going into the championship bracket play.

The Seminoles finished placing five of their pairs in the top five spots of bracket play, with the sixth FSU team finishing seventh.

Following a tough weekend in Chula Vista, Calif., and losing to teammates Jace Pardon and Marija Milosavljevic, Aurora Davis and Fatma Yildirim came back for redemption and defeated Pardon and Milosavljevic 23-21, 21-12 for first place. Coach Corso seems to love the competition between her top two pairs.

“They definitely had a rough patch,” Corso said. “They had a rough go at it in California. I think they were able to kind of regroup and retool what’s going on. Our No. 1 and No. 2 teams are really competitive. On any given day whoever is the freshest seems to be winning. It’s good that they are challenging each other,” said Corso.

The toughest matches of the day were against each other. Katherine Plessy and Julie Brown were defeated by Pardon and Milosavljevic, in the semifinals, 21-14, 21-13, and earned third place honors. The duo of Melanie Pavels and Lexy Ryan slid by teammates Jeassica McGregor and Kayla Joyce, 21-18, 21-12, to earn fourth place. McGregor and Joyce earned fifth place, while Blyss Harkness and Annie Montgomery beat the duo of Nina Berry and Cassie Nagel from Gulf Coast State College, 21-12, 21-15 to place seventh.

“Our strength is really in the depth of our team,” said Corso. “We have great alternates. Our No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 teams are really good. I think we have the deepest team in the nation. We need to keep improving.”

Davis and Plessy defeated teammates senior Mallory Kiley and sophomore Sarah Wickstrom for the "Silver" title, 21-16, 21-16, at the GSU sand volleyball complex to wrap up the two-day event.

In the "Gold" bracket, sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown finished second after falling to GSU's No. 1 tandem of Lane Carico and Katie Madewell, 21-15, 21-18, in the finals. Pavels and Brown avenged their Saturday pool play loss to ULM's Zuzanna Markova and Tanya Sukach, by defeating them, 21-15, 21-16, in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

"Today was the best day we've had so far this season," head coach Danalee Corso said. "Aurora and Katherine were great and Julie and Melanie, who moved up to No. 2, were very solid. Today was the first day I felt like we really got everything in our control right. We had some injuries (seniors Fatma Yildirim and Marija Milosavljevic), but our subs really stepped up. We got a lot of rest this past week and it paid off. The team is rounding into shape and I'm looking forward to the next few weeks leading up to the National Championships."

Also, competing on Sunday were sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and freshman Nina Pellitteri and the pair of junior Jeassica McGregor and sophomore Jace Pardon.

The Pellitteri sisters lost to Davis and Plessy in the "Silver" bracket and finished in a tie for third, while McGregor and Pardon fell in a tough three-set affair, 16-21, 21-19, 15-11, to GSU's Carico and Madewell in the "Gold" bracket. Carico was an All-American indoor player at Miami, but Pardon went toe to toe with her in one of the tournament's most exciting matches.

McGregor replaced Milosavljevic, who sprained her ankle on Saturday. Plessy subbed in for Yildirim, who is also battling injuries.

The "Gold" bracket featured teams' No. 1 and No. 2 pairs, while the "Silver" bracket featured pairs No. 3, 4 and 5.

Two Sweeps at Fiesta on Siesta.

Seminoles Sweep Webber and FGCU on Day 1 of event.

SIESTA KEY, FL - The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team breezed past Florida Gulf Coast and Webber International on Friday, sweeping both teams in dual action on Day 1 of the Fiesta on Siesta.

The Seminoles improved to 13-2 in duals on the season and dropped only two sets during the two matches held on the beaches of Siesta Key.

FSU will begin its defense of last year's Fiesta on Siesta Team Cup and Pairs Cup championships on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

"Tomorrow is really going to be a challenge," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "It was great to be out here today to get some experience playing in this sand. We had a great day. We had many of our reserves and some of the new indoor players compete against Webber. They all played well and we swept them. They stepped up today and I'm very proud of them.

"Against FGCU, I thought Katherine (Plessy) and Aurora (Davis) were phenomenal. They are still a new team, but they keep getting better and better and they have great chemistry. For Aurora, this is her home court and she really elevates her game."

Davis, a junior, and Plessy, a freshman, annihilated FGCU's Olivia Mesner and Lindsey Childs, 21-8, 21-9, to lead FSU to the 5-0 victory in the afternoon.

Sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom (Court 1), sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and her sister freshman Nina Pellitteri (Court 4) and senior Mallory Kiley and junior Jeassica McGregor (Court 5) also soared past the Eagles in two sets, while sophomore Melanie Pavels and Julie Brown won in three sets on Court 2, capturing the final frame with a score of 15-4.

Pavels and Brown also swept their Webber opponents on Court 1 in the morning en route to the other 5-0 Noles' win.

Joining them with victories against the Lady Warriors were senior Fatma Yildirim and junior Olivera Media (Court 2), freshmen Blyss Harkness and Plessy (Court 3), freshmen Sarah Burrington and sophomore Katie Mosher (Court 4) and freshmen Alexis Ryan and Kayla Joyce (Court 5).

FSU Defends Fiesta on Siesta Team Cup Title.

Fatma Yildirim and Olivera Medic also captured the Fiesta Gold Division bracket title.

April 13, 2013

SIESTA KEY, FL - The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team captured its second consecutive Fiesta on Siesta Team Cup title on Saturday on Day 2 of the nation's largest collegiate sand volleyball tournament.

Additionally, senior Fatma Yildirim and junior Olivera Medic went undefeated in pairs play to snag the Fiesta Gold Division championship, while senior Amanda Saxton and freshman Annie Montgomery grabbed runner-up honors in the Fiesta Silver bracket.

The Fiesta Gold and Silver divisions featured every pair except for each team's top three tandems and each match was played as one set to 25.

The top three pairs on each squad participated in the two-day Siesta bracket that wraps up Sunday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a 16-team single elimination bracket.

All three FSU tandems remain alive in the Siesta bracket after finishing in the top two in each of their respective pools and combining for an 8-1 record.

Sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom and the team of junior Aurora Davis and freshman Katherine Plessy both went 3-0, while sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown went 2-1, losing in a three-set match to FIU's No. 1 team.

The team championship was determined by total point totals correlating to the placement of each squads' pairs.

"I keep talking about our depth all year and this team championship is a reflection of that," head coach Danalee Corso said. "We've had top-to-bottom arguably the nation's deepest team this season and we played great today. It was a windy day and we used that to our advantage. We are smaller than a lot of these teams out here, but we have better ball control and defense and those were major factors today. Our top three teams all played great and we are definitely peaking at the right time with Nationals just a few weeks away."

In the Fiesta Gold division, Florida State had two other teams reach the quarterfinals with the tandems of senior Mallory Kiley and junior Jeassica McGregor and sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and her sister freshman Nina Pellitteri accomplishing the feat.

The highlight of the day was the championship for Yildirim and Medic, who haven't played together much in the sand, but were teammates on the FSU indoor volleyball team in the fall. The duo beat Webber International's Juliane Dougherty and Katie Lindstrom, 25-23, in the finals. They took down the Pellitterri's, 25-23, in the semifinals.

"Fatma has been battling some injuries, but she was great today," Corso said. "Oli played as well as I've seen her. She really stepped it up and elevated her game today. She is a gamer and probably the most improved player on our team."

FSU Wins Two Brackets on Final Day of Fiesta on Siesta.

A day after defending its team title, the Noles won two "Sunday Fun" championships.

April 14, 2013

SIESTA KEY, FL - A day after defending its Team Cup Championship, the No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team picked up two more titles in bracket play to wrap up the Fiesta on Siesta on Sunday.

The tandem of senior Mallory Kiley and sophomore Jeassica McGregor and the pair of sophomore Stephanie Pellitteri and her sister Nina Pellitteri each grabbed first place in separate "Sunday Fun" brackets, which were each single elimination and scored as one set to 25.

Kiley and McGregor won four matches in the 16-team "Sunday Fun 2" bracket, defeating FGCU's Liga Strautniece and Christine Pinder, 25-18, in the final.

The Pellitteri's also put together four wins among 12 teams in the "Sunday Fun 1" bracket. The sisters edged UNF's Anna Wagner and Emily Strack, 25-22, in their final.

FSU's top three teams played in the Gold Division bracket, which was a 16-team single elimination tournament.

The pair of sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown advanced to the semifinals after defeating teammates junior Aurora Davis and freshman Katherine Plessy in a tough three-set battle, 10-21, 21-17, 15-13. Pavels and Brown then fell to the eventual champions, Taylor Nyquist and Sammie Strausbaugh of Jacksonville, 21-15, 21-14, in the semifinals.

Sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom also reached the quarterfinals in the Gold Division, but lost in three sets to ULM's No. 1 pair of Zuzanna Markova and Tanya Sukach, 21-17, 16-21, 15-13.

"Overall it was a great weekend," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "We won just about every single division we competed in. Winning the Team Cup on Saturday was important and definitely a highlight for us. We fell short in the Gold pairs tournament today, but that will keep us motivated for the next three weeks as we prepare for the National Championships.

"We had some new pairs together for the first time this weekend, and they are starting to figure things out. The region keeps getting better and better, and we had some great battles today. I'm very proud of Mallory and Jeassica and Stephanie and Nina for winning their brackets today, too. They played great. It was a lot of fun."

The Fiesta on Siesta is the nation's largest collegiate sand volleyball tournament and featured over 300 competitors.

Florida State Sweeps Duals and Gets a Head Start on Bracket Play.

The Seminoles go 10-0 combined in two dual matches and send their seniors off on a high note.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – In a day that had four dual matches, and the first rounds of bracket play, the Florida State sand volleyball team lived up to its No. 3 ranking by sweeping the College of Charleston and UAB, 5-0. Georgia State saw also saw action against FSU as three of the four Seminole pairs in bracket play added victories of their own to create an edge going into the rest of bracket play on Sunday.

In the first dual match of the day, Florida State squared off against the College of Charleston. A clean sweep was in jeopardy when the pair of Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels dropped the first set to the duo of Darcy Dorton and Andi Zbojniewicz, 19-21, but they kept their composure and fought back to win the next two sets and the match, 23-21, 15-12.

The Seminoles’ No. 1 team of Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom, despite having limited playing time together, conquered the pair of Lizzie Theesfeld and Melissa Morello in straight sets, 21-10, 21-13.

“We just started playing together but we keep getting better every time we play,” Wickstrom said. “We are just getting used to it, trying to get better every time.”

One of the big strengths of Florida State is its depth and ability to change partners to give them an advantage against other teams.

“We are just so deep. That’s what our coaches have said,” says Aurora Davis. “They feel like they can put any team anywhere. It’s so nice. We change partners all the time and are doing just as good. It’s really nice to have that depth.”

Florida State has trusted their depth all season and hopes it brings them a National Championship in two weeks. Head coach Danalee Corso said, “We have a lot of depth and we’ve talked about that all year and that’s really what this sport is about. It’s a team championship. You have to win two out of the three duals.”

The ‘Noles also played UAB in a dual match this afternoon. The Seminoles continued where they left off from their first match with the College of Charleston, and won each match on all five courts against the Blazers. The sister connection of Stephanie and Nina Pellitteri shined on court five with a 21-9, 21-11 victory over Becca Howard and Kate Morrell of UAB.

Although Florida State swept both schools, coach Corso thought there was much room for improvement. “I think we were a little flat today,” Corso said. “We had a really tough weekend last weekend, 12-hour days in the hot sun and a lot of competition. I think that we kind of took it easy this week and maybe we went a little too easy.”

The Seminoles dominated regardless of playing flat, and relied on the fundamentals the coaching staff has been preaching all year long to earn home victories. “I think we have better fundamentals than anyone in the country so I think we have that to rely on even on days where we don’t play great.”

In a day filled with plenty of smiles, nothing made coach more proud than being able to honor four seniors on Senior Day. Mallory Kiley, Marija Milosavljevic, Amanda Saxton, and Fatma Yildirim were recognized on center court in front of the Seminole crowd.

“As I stood there next to them I realized how much they bring to the team as far as maturity,” said Corso. “Amanda is such a special girl. Mallory is a fifth-year senior so she is kind of the grandma of the team. She’s got a lot of wisdom. That’s an honor. There’s age behind that, and there’s maturity and wisdom as well. The other two [Marija and Fatma] are older international players and so they have a lot of different experiences as volleyball is concerned with playing forever. We are really going to miss them. It’s going to feel like a lot younger of a team without those four. We will definitely miss them a lot.”

The day concluded with the first round of bracket play. There were two brackets, Gold and Silver, with each school’s top two teams playing in the Gold bracket, and the school’s next three teams playing in the Silver bracket. The No. 3 teams from each school received a first round bye. Three of the four Seminole teams were victorious in the first round with the only team, Brown and Pavels, falling to the best pair in the tournament, Lane Carico and Katie Madewell from Georgia State, 21-18, 16-21, 6-15.

Florida State Wins Some Hardware and Gets Ready for National Championships.

The Seminoles' Stephanie and Nina Pellitteri win the Silver bracket, as Pardon and Wickstrom get second in the Gold bracket.

TALLAHASSEE, FL – In the last competitive event before National Championships, the Seminoles showed off their team’s depth and won the Silver bracket while placing second in the Gold bracket.

The duo of Stephanie and Nina Pellitteri went undefeated on the weekend in dual match play and in bracket play to win the Silver bracket. The sisters moved to 31-4 on the year, as the only Seminole pair to have played every match together. They had a combined record of 6-0 over the weekend.

“We were a little tired the first match coming in, but it was the end of the day - one match left. We had nothing to lose,” said Stephanie Pellitteri. “Going into it they were seeded No. 3 and we were No. 5. They were expected to win. We had nothing to lose.”

The sisters used that mentality to upset their fellow teammates and Florida State’s No. 3 team of Katherine Plessy and Aurora Davis, 18-21, 21-17, 17-15.

“We’ve been battling each other in the fall and now in the spring. Every single practice we play each other so we kind of know each other’s games so it can go either way all the time. It makes it really interesting and really competitive,” said Stephanie.

After losing the first set in the finals, they fought back to win the final two sets and were crowned the Silver bracket champions. Florida State had three pairs in the Silver bracket semifinals, Plessy/Davis, Kiley/Yildirim, Pellitteri/Pellitteri, and both teams in the championship match.

In the Gold bracket, Georgia State’s team of Lane Carico and Katie Madewell rolled through the bracket and took first place. They faced Florida State’s Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom in the first match of the day, defeating them, 21-19, 21-19.

After the loss, Pardon and Wickstrom faced elimination. They won the next two matches and reached the finals to face off against the only duo to have defeated them over the weekend, Carico and Madewell.

Pardon and Wickstrom dropped a close first set, 19-21, they were unable to force a third set and lost in straight sets, 19-21, 12-21. Julie Brown and Melanie Pavels received seventh place in the Gold bracket by beating Ally Slaughter and Kirsten Gallagher of UAB, 21-18, 23-21.

After a solid day on the sand, Florida State can now focus on the goal they’ve had since the beginning of the season, the National Championships. “It’s been obviously on our mind the whole season. I think after the California trip it was clear that we had a great chance of making it. As we go forward it’s always on our mind and we compete thinking about that.” said head coach Danalee Corso.

The depth of the FSU team gives them an advantage, but some might think the switching of pairs might cause some disadvantages. Danalee Corso begs to differ. “We have some new partnerships which puts them in different roles so that has been to our disadvantage. For example, we have two blockers playing together who have great defensive skills but haven’t really played that position and our No. 1 team are two defenders who have never played blocker. I think it’s like one step back to take two steps forward. We’ve had some injuries but right now I think they are going to look really good heading into National Championships.”

“It’s going to be so exciting,” said Nina Pellitteri. “Playing against these three teams is going to be like what the competition is like in the National Championships. It’s not going to be easier, laid back teams. It’s going to be really hard, tough games, just like we played in our last match.”

“This is our lineup. This is how it’s going to look,” said Corso. “I’m happy with how the team played. I think we got better as the day went on and usually people get more tired, so that’s really good. That means their condition was good. We were a little flat yesterday and we came on stronger today. That was important.”

FSU Returns to National Championship Semifinals.

FSU went 2-1 on Day 1 and faces No. 1 seed Pepperdine at 11 a.m. CT Saturday.

GULF SHORES, AL - The No. 3-seeded Florida State sand volleyball team advanced to the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship semifinals for the second straight year, finishing 2-1 in dual match play on Friday.

The Seminoles opened the tournament by routing No. 6 seed ULM, 5-0, before dropping a nail-biter to No. 2 seed Long Beach State, 3-2, in the afternoon. The Noles rebounded to cap Day 1 on the beaches of Gulf Shores with another 5-0 sweep - this time against North Florida - to vault into the Final Four.

Florida State will face No. 1-seeded and defending national champion Pepperdine at 11 a.m. CT. A win will propel the Seminoles into the title match at 3:30 p.m. CT.

"It was tough losing to Long Beach - we were so close," sophomore Sarah Wickstrom said. "We beat UNF right after, though. We came back and we wanted it. We are really excited to play Pepperdine. We haven't played them in a couple of months. We're ready to get some revenge and beat them."

The Garnet and Gold will be looking to hand the Waves their first-ever loss in dual match play. FSU came close earlier this season, barely losing to Pepperdine, 3-2, in California in March.

"We're looking good," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "I feel confident against Pepperdine. They have a new pair in the No. 1 spot. I think our challenging match against Long Beach today will set us up well for tomorrow."

In the dual of the day, Florida State and Long Beach State fought to the brink. The Noles took the first set on three of five courts and four matches went three sets.

After seniors Mallory Kiley and Fatma Yildirim fell in straight sets on Court 4, junior Aurora Davis and freshman Katherine Plessy evened the score up with a three-set victory on Court 3, 21-19, 19-21, 15-8.

Sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown also picked up a three-set win, 21-18, 19-21, 15-8, blowing past the 49ers in the final frame on Court 2.

The Seminoles had match point several times in the third set on Courts 1 and 5, but couldn't put away Long Beach State.

Sophomores Jace Pardon and Wickstrom dropped the final set, 17-15, on Court 1 versus last year's pairs runners-up Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke, while Stephanie and Nina Pellitteri nearly handed Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson their first loss of the season, falling 18-16 in the decisive set.

"We lost that match to Long Beach State, but it doesn't get any closer," Corso said. "We had a couple of match points. That team is older than us. We have a really young team and we keep getting better. I'm very encouraged."

Facing elimination against UNF a few hours later, FSU regrouped and played energized volleyball in sweeping the Ospreys, 5-0, again dropping only one set.

On Courts 1 and 2, Pardon and Wickstrom and Brown and Pavels each won in straight sets. Kiley and Yildirim also won in two sets on Court 4, as did the Pellitteri sisters on 5.

Davis and Plessy were forced into a three-set match against UNF, but cruised to a 15-9 win in the final set.

"We were kind of physically and mentally wiped out (after the Long Beach State match)," Corso said. "But we came back out and the team won all of their matches against UNF, keeping us undefeated in the East Region for the second straight year. I'm really proud of the team."

In their first match of the day, Florida State made quick work of ULM, dropping only one set en route to morning sweep.

FSU already had the match sealed up in under an hour as the Garnet and Gold earned two-set sweeps on Courts 2 through 5.

The Pellitteri's captured the most decisive win, a dominant 21-7, 21-5 triumph on Court 5.

Two FSU teams went 3-0 on the day with the No. 2 tandem of Brown and Pavels and the No. 3 pair of Davis and Plessy both going undefeated.

Noles Fall to Pepperdine in National Semifinals.

FSU fell to the defending national champions, 3-2, on Saturday.

GULF SHORES, AL - The No. 3-seeded Florida State sand volleyball team battled hard, but ultimately fell to defending national champion and No. 1-seeded Pepperdine, 3-2, in the 2013 AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship Semifinals on Saturday.

The Noles advanced to the nation's "Final Four" for the second consecutive year and has firmly planted the Garnet and Gold as the East Coast's top program, having only lost to the Waves and No. 2 seeded Long Beach State in two years.

"Certainly, we would've liked to break Pepperdine's winning streak," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "They're a very formidable team. They've all been playing in the sand for 10 years. We have such a young team. We have our top three (pairs) all returning, and I can't wait to watch this team grow. Only one team is going to be really happy leaving here, but I'm really proud of this group this season."

Florida State's No. 1 and No. 2 tandems still have an opportunity to capture a National Championship in the 16-team, single-elimination pairs tournament on Sunday.

The No. 1 team of sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom and the No. 2 pair of sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown will open play at 8 a.m. CT on Sunday.

The Garnet and Gold opened the semifinals with a 1-0 lead before play even started after Pepperdine chose to forfeit on Court 1 following an injury.

The Noles battled hard on all four courts during the match, but only Stephanie and Nina Pellitteri captured a victory, taking down Pepperdine's Emily Cook and Katie Messing, 21-12, 21-17, to finish the 2013 season with a remarkable 34-5 record together.

"We were all real excited today," Stephanie Pellitteri said. "We definitely worked hard and had an amazing year. As a team, we didn't win. We can only grow from this. It's definitely motivation for next year."

On Court 4, seniors Mallory Kiley and Fatma Yildirim traded leads with Waves Victoria Adelhelm and Taylor Racich in the first set before ultimately losing, 21-19, 21-15.

Kiley, a co-captain this season, wrapped up a brilliant two-year stretch on the sand volleyball team, finishing with 59 career wins and competing in two National Championships.

Junior Aurora Davis and freshman Katherine Plessy battled tough on Court 3, but couldn't overcome the Pepperdine duo of Kelley Larson and Kellie Woolever, falling 21-18, 21-18.

Davis joined Stephanie Pellitteri, Kiley, Pardon, Yildirim and Wickstrom as two-time National Championships participants.

Brown and Pavels also fought to the end on Court 2 against Lara Dykstra and Caitlin Racich, of Pepperdine, but lost, 21-16, 21-19. The duo tied the match 19-19 in the second set, but Pepperdine rallied back.

Brown and Pavels played only one match on Saturday, while Pardon and Wickstrom didn't play at all because of the Pepperdine forfeit, so the two FSU duos should be fresh for a great run in the Pairs National Championship on Sunday.

FSU finished the second season of collegiate sand volleyball with an impressive 17-4 dual match record.

Semifinals: No. 1 Pepperdine, 3, No. 3 Florida State 2

FSU Caps Season in Pairs Quarterfinals.

The All-America duo of Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom fell in the pairs quarterfinals.

GULF SHORES, AL - The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team's 2013 season came to a close on Sunday during pairs tournament play at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship.

FSU's No. 1 tandem of sophomores Jace Pardon and Sarah Wickstrom won their first round match against UNF's Anna Budinska and Dagnija Medina, 21-12, 19-21, 15-8, in the 16-team, single-elimination pairs bracket, before falling in the quarterfinals to FIU's Jessica Mendoza and Maryna Samoday, 21-19, 21-15 on a morning filled with heavy gusts of wind.

"They say the wind is a great equalizer," Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. "We usually look forward to the wind, but we came across a team that played better in the wind than us. We have a young team and they did great this season. I'm really proud of them. Hopefully we'll come back hungry next year."

It was the second consecutive year that Pardon advanced to the quarterfinals. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native made the semifinals with former Nole Kate Stepanova last season.

On Saturday night, Pardon and Wickstrom were both honored as 2013 AVCA All-Americans. The pair finished the season with a 14-5 record together as FSU's No. 1 pair. Overall, Pardon tallied an impressive 28-12 mark this year, while Wickstrom finished at 28-7.

The pair will form the backbone of FSU's team next year along with 2012 All-American Aurora Davis and the Noles' No. 2 pair of sophomore Melanie Pavels and freshman Julie Brown.

Pavels and Brown also competed on Sunday, falling in the first round of pairs play to Southern California's Katie Fuller and Cinnamon Sary in a three-set battle, 21-14, 11-21, 16-14.

In the third set, the Seminole pair trailed 11-6, but never gave up, scoring five consecutive points to tie the final set at 11 before the Trojans edged the tandem to move on.

High speed winds and a scattered shower made for an interesting morning of play. Early in the first round matches teams relied completely on ball control as unpredictable winds dictated where the ball would land.

Pardon and Wickstrom dominated their Osprey opponents in the first set in round one, 21-12, before dropping a close second set, 19-21. Led by a couple of resounding Wickstrom kills, the Noles ran away with the third set by opening with a 5-0 lead en route to a 15-8 win.

In the quarterfinals, Pardon and Wickstrom hung with the FIU duo early in the first set and were barely edged 21-19. In the second set, the All-America pair couldn't get in rhythm, however, as the Panthers built leads of 7-2 and 14-7 before winning 21-15.

The future is bright for FSU heading into its third campaign next spring. The Seminoles will return its top three pairs and will be motivated to challenge 2012 national champion Pepperdine and 2013 champions Long Beach State for the 2014 title - two teams FSU barely lost to during the team competition on Friday and Saturday.

"We had three All-Americans last year, and we added two more different All-Americans this year," Corso said. "It just shows that we've got a lot of great players here. It's all about who is peaking at the right time. There were probably eight different ladies that could've played in that top position this year. I think it makes for a very healthy competitive atmosphere, and that's what makes great teams."

FSU is 33-6 in two seasons of sand volleyball play and hasn't lost to a team on the East Coast. The Noles have had five different All-Americans in two seasons, as Danalee Corso and her husband, assistant coach Brian Corso, are building a juggernaut in Tallahassee.
