Sheldon Eugene Hilaman Obituary. Published by the Tallahassee Democrat on Jul 26, 1981, page 1. City Commissioner Shad Hilaman dies. City Commissioner Sheldon "Shad" Hilaman died in the back yard of his Piedmont Drive home Saturday afternoon, appare3ntly of a heart attack. He was 57. Hilaman was the principal of Caroline Brevard Elementary School and had more than two years left in his second term as a city commissioner. Hilaman's wife, Marie Hilaman, returned home shortly after 4 p.m. from her job at Florida State University and found Hilaman lying in the back yard, said Lt. Tommy Traylor of the Tallahassee Police Department. He had mowed the lawn Friday and apparently was raking up the dried grass when he was stricken, Traylor said. Police officers arrived at the house at 4:37 p.m., five minutes after being called, and believe Hilaman already was dead, Traylor said. Traylor said he was told by family members that Hilaman had been taking medicine for a heart condition and high blood pressure and that he was a diabetic. Hilaman came to Tallahassee in 1947 to attend FSU and played on the varsity basketball team. He was a coach with the Leon County public school system before becoming a principal. His colleagues on the city commission remembered him Saturday for his efforts to unify commissioners who were split on controversial issues. He made friends with everyone, even those who opposed his political stands, commissioners said. "I think he saw himself as the peacemaker on the city commission," said Commissioner Carol Bellamy. "He always tried to find the middle ground that brought us together." Mayor Hurly Rudd, a longtime friend, agreed that Hilaman was "a friend of everybody." "If he had a political failing, it was because he tried to please everybody," Rudd said. Hilaman began his first term as a commissioner after a narrow, 57-vote victory in the 1976 election. He was re-elected in 1980 and served as mayor in 1979. Hilaman was known as a conservative, particularly on money matters, Rudd said. He usually voted against projects that he thought would increase the size of government or raise taxes. Recently, Hilaman found himself in the minority on two issues. He was one of two commissioners to vote against the $11.6-million City Hall project, and he joined Rudd in voting against city participation in financing a $21-million Sheraton Hotel. But when he took a position he stuck to it, said Herb Seckel, the commission's auditor-clerk and a college roommate of Hilaman. "He went with what he really thought was right," Seckel said. Hilaman will best be remembered as a man who was kind to everyone. About his year as mayor, Hilaman told a reporter last year: "I don't think I've ever failed to listen to anyone and show courtesy." Concern for others' feelings also marked his 16 years as principal of Bre3vard Elementary, said Ruth Ann Wynn, Hilaman's assistant principal for 11 years until she returned to teaching last year. "He was sort of a pal to the students," Mrs. Wynn said. "He took a counselor's role with children who were taken to the office. "His school was a giant part of his life. He will be missed by everyone." Hilaman was a native of Mansfield, Ohio, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, survivors include a son, William W. "Bill" Hilaman of
Tallahassee; two daughters, Mary Ann Walsh and Linda Gail Hilaman of
Tallahassee; a brother, Stanley K. Hilaman of Tallahassee; two sisters
Joyce Veitinger of Beach City, Ohio, and Shirley Hostleter of Strasburg,
Ohio; and a granddaughter, Danille Walsh of Tallahassee. |
