From the Florida Flambeau, September 29, 1959, page 3. Ex-Cage Star Believed Lost In Santa Fe. A concentrated search was continued yesterday in the Santa Fe River for the body of James Liteky, 22-year-old former FSU basketball star. Liteky, an instructor of Physical Education at Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, is presumed to have drowned while swimming Saturday afternoon. Liteky has been missing since he dived into the river about 4:30 p.m. Saturday near Fort White in Columbia County. Liteky dived into he swift water to swim beneath the surface to a point about 35 yards from the bank. He never reappeared. Liteky, who lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Liteky at 1059 Talbot Ave., Jacksonville, has been on the Terry Parker staff since the current term started. He was graduated from FSU in June. He excelled in basketball in high school and college. Florida State basketball coach Bud Kennedy said: "Liteky was one of the finest basketball players I have ever coached, not only a magnificent ball player but a terrific person and liked by everyone. I feel this is a tragic loss to FSU, Terry Parker and Jacksonville." Liteky coached the junior varsity football and basketball teams at Terry Parker and was assistant track coach. He was an all-state high school basketball player. The accident occurred near the old Fort
White Bridge on State Road 47, near U.S. Route 27. The river separates
Columbia and Gilchrist counties at the point. Fort White is about 20 miles
south of Lake City. |
