Derek Ramone Groomes Obituary. Published by the Tallahassee Democrat on Oct 23, 2005, page 19. Derek passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005 in Blue Springs, Missouri. He was born September 15, 1958 to his proud parents Freddie and Benjamin H. Groomes in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Florida State University School where he was an honor student, a star basketball player, drum major and member of the schools newspaper staff. Derek attended the University of Rhode Island on an athletic scholarship and received his Bachelor's degree from the Florida State University where he also played basketball. Derek began his career as a broadcast journalist. He later became a police officer with the Tallahassee Police Department. His career in the insurance industry began with State Farm Insurance in Kansas City. More recently, Derek worked as an independent benefit specialist. Derek was a member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board, worked with the youth ministry and sang in the "Voices Choir". He was a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Florida and its Jurisdiction, PHA, J.R.E. Lee Subordinate Lodge #422 and the Kansas City Swinger Golf Association. He also served on the National Kidney Foundation Biard. Derek is survived by his wife Tanya
Groomes, and two loving children, Derek ReMone' Groomes II and Deriah Renee
Groomes of Blue Springs, Missouri, mother, Freddie Groomes McLendon,
(Dennis A. McLendon Sr., Stepfather), Tallahassee, Florida, father Benjamin
H. Groomes, Peoria, Arizona, sister Linda Groomes Cooper, Phoenix, Arizona
and step-brothers Dennis A. McLendon, Jr., Silver Springs, MD. and Karl
McLendon, Jacksonville, FL. Derek will always be loved and missed by his
godmother, many aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and a host of friends. |
