on Dec 12, 2014, page B6. Earl Weston Hawkins, age 72, passed away
Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at his home. Born December 27, 1941 in
Petersburg, Va., he was the son of the late Amy Mosley and Albert Lloyd
Hawkins. He is survived by his wife, Lynda Jones Hawkins; son, Charles
William Hawkins of Bonney Lake, Wash.; daughter, JudiAnn Hawkins Shaver of
Mechanicsville, Va.; and grandchildren, Colin Weston Shaver, Savannah
Francis Shaver, Raeghen Lyric Hawkins, Ryleigh Eaden Hawkins and Kyler
Nicholas Hawkins; also brother, Charles Albert Hawkins (Beverly); sister,
Judy Hawkins Cole (Wayne); and aunt, Ruth Mosley Thompson. Earl was a
graduate of Petersburg High School and Emory & Henry College. He was a
retired educator having taught and coached in Dinwiddie, Hanover and King &
Queen counties. He was a teacher and athletic director at King & Queen
Central High School at the time of his retirement. Earl worked briefly for
C&P Telephone Company after playing professional football. He was drafted
by the Detroit Lions in 1964 and was traded to the Baltimore Colts prior to
the 1966 season. In high school he led the State Group-1 in scoring. He was
recruited by Florida State University, but after his Freshman year, he
transferred to Emory & Henry College, where he received numerous awards and
honors. He is a member of the E&H Sports Hall of Fame. In 2013, they
retired his #45 jersey. Earl also excelled in softball. He is a member of
the Central Virginia ASA Hall of Fame and the Virginia USSSA Hall of Fame.
He coached the Stompers, a women's softball team, to an ASA National Title.
In retirement, Earl's passion was golf and his 1960 Edsel. He was a member
of Jordan Point Golf Club.
