Carl Mantell Fisher, Ph.D., 79, of Lumberton, N.C., died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at Woodhaven Nursing and Alzheimer's Care Center.

Mr. Fisher was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Tampa. He was a professor emeritus at University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where his career included professor of education, dean of students and vice-chancellor of academic affairs and dean of faculty. He received degrees from Florida State University and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. He retired from UNC-P after 37 years in the field of education.

He was a much-loved husband, father, friend and mentor. Mr. Fisher was an avid reader who enjoyed music, fishing and traveling. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Gard Fisher; two sons, Robert Mantell Fisher and Donald Mantell Fisher, both of Lumberton; a daughter, Karen Fisher Dunlap (and husband Ben); two granddaughters, Katherine Ann Fletcher Dunlap and Zoe Elizabeth Dunlap, both of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Barbra Jean Schultz of Tampa; and a brother, Benjamin Lawrence Fisher of Tampa.
