Richard Oscar Bagge Obituary Excerpted from Providence Journal/Evening Bulletin on Nov 21, 1999. Age 72 - a champion coach of Providence College volleyball for 17 years, retiring in 1994, and a New England champion player as well, died at Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick. Son of the late Oscar F. and Mary A. (Parker) Bagge. Husband of the late Ellen P. (Wheaton) Bagge. He was the brother of the late Stanley Bagge. He had lived in Providence most of his life, moving to Cranston 15 years ago. Mr. Bagge was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the first volleyball player in collegiate history to receive a full scholarship. While playing for Florida State University, he was also the first freshman ever to be named to the All-American Team in 1954. After attending FSU, he captained the Woonsocket YMCA team, which reigned as New England champions for 21 years. He was a member and president of the Providence Turners Volleyball Team. In 1959, he was named to the USA Goodwill Contingency Team by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The next year, he was selected to the U.S. Volleyball Association All-Star Touring Team. He was twice selected to the USVBA Senior All-American Team. In 1977, he was named the first coach of the Providence College volleyball program. He had a career record of 533-221-6, for a .705 winning percentage. He led the Friars to three Big East Championships in 1983, 1985 and 1987 and three Big East second-place finishes in 1984, 1986 and 1992. His teams made two trips to the NCAA Tournament, in 1983 and 1985. While at Providence College, he was selected Big East Coach of the Year four times 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1992. He was named New England Coach of the Year in 1981 and was honored in 1986 as the Northeast Region NCAA Division 1 Coach of the Year. He was a past president of the Elmwood Little League. He was a member of the Bonnet Shores Beach Club and the East Greenwich Volunteer Firemen's Association. Survived by two sons, Richard M. Bagge of Long
Beach, Calif., and John F. Bagge of South Kingstown; a daughter, Susan M.
Yanez of South Kingstown; a sister, Audrey M. Welch of Narragansett; and
