Former FSU assistant dies from leukemia
By Jim Henry, Tallahassee Democrat

Jody Allen, a former 10-year assistant coach at Florida State under Bobby Bowden, died Thursday after being recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemina.

The news was shared on social media Friday by longtime FSU football chaplin Clint Purvis. Allen - married with a young daughter - was under hospice care in his Columbus, Georgia, home.

In an interview with the Democrat last month, Allen's spirit and faith remained strong.

"This isn't how I would have expected it to be," Allen told the Democrat.

"It (treatment) worked great, but in the middle of it, it came back really aggressively and very nasty. I believe God is the ultimate physician. He can still heal me. If he wants to take me home, I am ready."

Allen started as a graduate assistant in 2000 and served as defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator under Bowden. He wasn't retaining when Jimbo Fisher replaced the retiring Bowden following the 2010 Gator Bowl.

Allen played football at Valdosta State and coached at the professional, collegiate and high school levels for more than 30 years. He last coached at Chattahoochee County in Georgia in 2019.
