Crimson Tide Indoor Opener

Solid Start For Track 'Noles.

FSU opens indoor season with four runner-up performances in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Denatrius Locke was solid in his long-awaited Florida State track & field debut, and a pair of women registered all-time bests in the shot put, highlighting the Seminoles' season-opening indoor performances Saturday at the Crimson Tide Opener.

Locke capped his first performance for the Seminoles with a narrow runner-up finish in the section B final of the 60-meter dash. The Tampa native, who was forced to sit out last season after transferring from Tennessee, hit the finish line in 6.67 seconds and was just .001 behind Stillman's Jeffery Henderson for the win.

Chelsea Whalen opener her junior season with a bang in the shot put, uncorking an all-time best throw of 15.57 meters (51-1) on her sixth and final throw of the day at the Birmingham CrossPlex facility. Whalen's career-best effort - indoors and outdoors - was good for a second-place finish. Sophomore Lakitta Johnson also delivered an all-time best throw of 14.26m (46-9.50) to finish fourth.

"Considering how little work we've been able to do on the track, to open the season with a PR or an indoor best, that's pretty impressive," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden. "It was a little frustrating, because as coaches we knew we didn't have enough reps under our belt."

The field for the Seminoles' opening meet was stout, to be sure. The 16th-ranked FSU faced off against competitors from No. 2 Florida, No. 10 LSU, No. 11 Auburn and No. 20 Mississippi State, among others. The unranked FSU women squared off against athletes from No. 4 LSU, No. 5 Florida, No. 14 Texas and No. 24 Auburn.

Among the more pleasant developments, junior sprinter Marecia Pemberton was impressive in her first competition since undergoing surgery that prematurely ended her 2012 outdoor season. The 2011 All-American advanced to the finals of the women's 60-meter dash with a preliminary round time of 7.51, then followed up with a 7.49 in the final, finished second to 2012 Bowerman Award winner Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU (7.39).

"That was Marecia's fastest opener," Harnden said. "Before the meet she said she was just happy to be running. To be healthy through the meet, I was really happy about that."

More than a dozen Seminoles made their collegiate debuts in garnet and gold and among the newcomers, junior college transfer Alonzo Russell posted the best finish. Last year's NJCAA national champion in the 400 meters for Essex (Md.) Community College turned in an indoor personal-best of 47.75 to finish second in the 400-meter dash.

In all, it was a solid performance by the FSU men and women to build on.

"There were some good things," Harnden said. "We showed in a couple places we needed reps, but we showed some fight. This was certainly a better meet than when we came here a year ago."

Record Falls.

Cherry-Bronson sets weight throw mark.

BIRMINGHAM, AL- A new school record, some solid performances by a handful of first-year athletes and the usual dominance of the Florida State women's distance team marked the highlights of Saturday's Auburn Indoor Invitational at the Birmingham Crossplex.

The Seminoles opened the day in style with redshirt sophomore Briana Cherry-Bronson establishing a new school record in the weight throw, finishing second with a 19.06m (62-6.50) effort on her third throw of the day. It was not only good enough to wipe out Lakeisha Mose's 15-year old Seminole school mark of 19.02, but moved Cherry-Bronson to second among all ACC throwers this season.

Classmate Lakitta Johnson also established a new personal-best in the weight throw, finishing fifth with a toss of 17.33m (56-10.25) on her first attempt of the day.

Taking control at the gun, freshman Georgia Peel provided the Seminoles - men and women - with the first of two victories on the day, winning the 800-meter run in 2:08.01 in her collegiate indoor debut. Freshman Natalie Concepcion finished fifth in 2:12.05.

While women's distance coach Karen Harvey's youngsters logged the first victory, her veterans were next in line. Senior Amanda Winslow and sophomore Colleen Quigleyran away from the field in the 3000-meter run, posting a 1-2 finish in 9:18.48 and 9:21.59, respectively. Those times moved the Seminole tandem to first and second rankings in the ACC this indoor season.

Earlier in the day, Kayleigh Tyerman turned in a solid third-place performance in the mile run, placing third in 4:53.09.

The Seminoles received another solid performance by a first-year student as freshman pole vaulter Hannah Acton soared to an all-time indoor best mark of 3.70m (12-1.50) in just her second collegiate meet to finish eighth. Acton's previous best came as a senior at Bloomington (Ind.) South High last year when she cleared 3.50m (11-5.75).

Freshman Sage Watson placed seventh overall in the 400-meter dash, after cruising to victory in her heat in 46.15.

Watson ran the second leg of FSU's fifth-place 4x400 relay team, taking the baton from leadoff junior Elizabeth Ichite and passing it to sophomore Sarah Chandler. Freshman Ewa Marcinkiewicz brought home the baton in 3:46.56.

While the Seminole women were registering the majority of the highlight, the men got in on the act as well.

Junior Darrin Gibson couldn't quite hold off a sit-kick crowd in his quest for an 800-meter victory, slipping from first to third in the final 25 meters while posting a respectable time of 1:51.85. In his season-opening race the junior was one of three runners to eclipse the meet record, despite finishing just .18 seconds out of first place.

Phillip Young placed third in the long jump, despite managing just one mark - a leap of 7.16m (23-6) - on six attempts.

Freshman debuts with nation's third-fastest 60 at Razorback Invitational.

Jan. 25, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Freshman sprinter Marvin Bracy announced his arrival on the NCAA stage Friday evening at the Razorback Invitational, posting the fastest qualifying time in the preliminary heats of the 60-meter dash at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.

In his first race since injury his hamstring at the Florida High School state meet in May, the Florida State dual-sport star did not disappoint, bolting from the blocks on the way to victory in the opening heat. His time of 6.64 seconds was not only a personal best - he had only run the 60-meter distance once before in high school - but is the third-fastest time in Division I early on in the 2013 season.

"Obviously Bracy has that innate ability to go out after three weeks of practice and he throws down the third-fastest time," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. Frankly 6.64 is going to make it (to nationals) every time. ...

"He didn't look intimidated at all. He didn't look like he was digging, either. It looked easy."

Bracy heads into Saturday's semifinal round, where he will run out of lane 4 in the first of two heats. The top two runners in each heat, plus the next four fastest finishers will advance to the evening final. FSU teammates David Ambler (6.88) and Dentarius Locke (6.81) also advanced to the semifinal. Ambler will join Bracy in the first heat while Locke will run in the second heat.

While Locke did what was necessary to move on from the preliminary round in the 60, he saved just enough for a solid scoring performance in his 200-meter season debut. The redshirt junior covered the single-lap event in 21.15 seconds, good for a fourth-place showing and the fastest time among Atlantic Coast Conference sprinters this season.

"Locke gets another race (in the 60) and looked pretty darn good in the 200," Braman added.

On the women's side, junior Marecia Pemberton also moved on to the 60-meter semifinals, qualifying with the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary round (7.50). It's just another step on the comeback trail for Pemberton, who is competing in just her second meet since undergoing hip surgery in the spring.

Competing in a rare, early-season scored meet, the unranked Seminole women closed out the first day with 15.5 points after seven events, good for seventh place in the 11-team event which includes eight nationally ranked teams. The No. 21 Florida State men are in eighth place with 17 points from a field of 11 that includes six nationally ranked teams.

"We did a lot of decent things on both sides," Bramans said. "Stefan Brits was pretty good in the long jump. Both girls - Maryke Brits and Der'Renae Freeman - qualified for the finals. ... It was a pretty good first day. We've got to put the pieces together. I thought we were OK. We've got some exciting things coming up tomorrow."

Five women earned top-eight finishes to contribute to the Seminoles' point total. Freshman long jumper Maryke Brits, competing in just her second meet, leaped 6.05 meters (19-10.25) to tie for third place. Brits' effort ranks second among ACC jumpers this season. Freeman was seventh with a season-best effort of 5.78m (18-11.75).

A pair of freshmen pole vaulters - Hannah Acton and Karly Jackson - continued to show early-season signs of improvement with new season-best marks. Acton was fifth, clearing 3.87 meters (12-8.25), while Jackson was seventh (3.57/11-8.50). Another freshman, Ewa Marcinkiewicz, placed seventh in the pentathlon. The Swede finished with 3,404 points in her first collegiate competition in the five-event competition.

Over the on the men's side, sophomore Stefan Brits claimed a fifth-place finish in the long jump, despite a controlled effort. Brits matched his career indoor best for the 'Noles by going just 7.37 meters (24-2.25), despite passing on his three final attempts in an attempt not to tax a nagging hamstring issue.

Seth Proctor matched Locke for the highest finish among Seminole men, placing fourth in the 5,000 meters (14:47.16). Proctor led two-thirds of the way through the event before a slight fade over the closing four laps.

Senior Andrew Lahaye closed out the first-day scoring for the 'Noles with a sixth-place finish in the men's pole vault (5.06m/16-7.25).

Making Noise!

Bracy wins 60-meter dash; Winslow leads mile charge.

Jan. 26, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Marvin Bracy isn't the kind of person to sneak up on anyone. Usually the music blaring from his Beats headphones gives him away. Of course, so does his prowess as one of the most decorated high school sprinters of all time.

Bracy won't be sneaking up on anyone on the collegiate scene either, not after announcing his arrival as the next great Florida State sprinter with a victory in the 60-meter dash finals Saturday at the Razorback Invitational. The freshman from Orlando, Fla. blitzed the field at the Randal Tyson Track Complex in a nation-leading time of 6.61 seconds.

"I was really nervous because of my hamstring, and I hadn't competed since last May," Bracy said. "It's very exciting to go out there and do what I said I was going to do. This gives me something to build on."

Bracy's hamstring, which has been a problem both on the track and the football field for the dual-sport Seminole, gave him no reason for pause. He navigated all three rounds - preliminaries, semifinal and final - without issue and was clearly the class of the field. He followed Friday's preliminary round win in 6.64 with an identical time in Saturday's semifinal before rolling in the final. He finished a full .10 ahead of the runner-up, while teammate Dentarius Locke was fourth in 6.73.

"Marvin was very impressive," said FSU head coach Bob Braman, who was especially pleased with how the freshman handled the rounds and came away healthy. "It was great for him."

"I've got all of my encouragement back, now that I've got one under my belt ... I can go out there with a clear head the next time," said Bracy, who even admitted he was surprised with how well his fitness held up through the rounds despite just three weeks of practice. "It actually did (surprise me) because I was behind most people, who had been training since football started.

"I've just got to play catch-up."

Bracy wasn't the lone winner Saturday for the Seminoles.

Senior women's distance standout Amanda Winslow led a dominant performance by the Seminoles in the invitational section of the mile run, winning in 4:33.22. Sophomore Colleen Quigley was third in 4:37.55, followed by freshman Colleen Quigley in fourth (4:40.55).

"Man, did Winslow look like a million bucks," Braman gushed. "She didn't look like she was slowing down at all."

To provide some perspective to what the trio accomplished, they came away from the meet with the nation's second, fifth and ninth fastest times nationally. All three were significant personal bests.

Senior Jessica Parry added a personal best in the 3000-meter run, placing seventh in 9:25.28. Women's distance coach Karen Harvey also received a fifth-place performance from freshman Natalie Concepcion in the invitational 800 (2:12.68).

Briana Cherry-Bronson rounded out the scoring for the Seminole women by placing fifth in the weight throw with a hurl of 18.02 meters (59-1.50).

In a field that included eight nationally ranked teams, the unranked FSU women placed seventh with 46 points.

The 21st-ranked Florida State men placed eighth out of 11 teams. The Seminoles' middle distance runners chipped in with Darrin Gibson placing fifth in the 800 with a season-best time of 1:50.09. Michael Fout was eighth in the mile run (4:05.47).

Junior All-American Phillip Young made his season debut in the triple jump and finished fifth in a loaded field with a strong opening leap of 15.44m (50-8). Junior transfer Owen Cain was eight in 15.13 (49-7.75).

Florida State's 4x400 relay team of Alonzo Russell, Gibson, Young and Ricardo Roy used a season-best time of 3:14.75 to place sixth and round out the scoring.

"There were a lot of positives," said Braman. "It's definitely a glass half full. We're starting to show progress."

While the FSU coaching staff did not place any emphasis on the team scoring, they were especially encouraged by a host of new personal or collegiate bests. Russell finished out of the scoring in 10th place in the 400, but set a new career best in 47.43.

All four FSU women in the 400 - Sage Watson (54.36), Elizabeth Ichite (56.13), Sarah Chandler (56.38) and Marsha Ariol (57.21) - set either personal or season bests. So did Kayleigh Tyerman in the 3000-meter run (9:39.52), which was only good for ninth.

Sprinting To The Front.

Bracy, Locke secure top two NCAA times with 1-2 60 finish at Tyson.

Feb. 8, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Florida State teammates freshman Marvin Bracy and junior Dentarius Locke traded top times through the first two qualifying rounds of the 60-meter dash at the Tyson Invitational Friday, setting up a much-anticipated final at the Randal Tyson Track Complex.

The duo didn't disappoint.

Bracy laid down the fastest collegiate time of the 2013 indoor season, winning in a Florida State school record of 6.54 seconds, with Locke right on his hip in second at 6.56. Bracy's time is the fourth-fastest in the world this season and tied for the United States lead with 2012 Olympian Mike Rogers. Locke now boasts the second-fastest collegiate time in the country, which ranks sixth in the world and third in the U.S.

"I got out pretty well," Bracy said of the final. "I was leading the whole race and I just saw him (Locke) coming out of the corner of my eye; I saw him pushing and I was able to hold him off."

In the process, Bracy broke Maurice Mitchell's two-year old school record of 6.55. The victory, his second in as many meets, has the freshman from Orlando quite excited about where he's headed just six rounds into his collegiate career.

"I'm actually am (ahead of schedule)," Bracy said afterward. "I had it in my mind to run 6.55 here two weeks ago." Instead he settled for the win in 6.61 at the Razorback Invitational, then went back to work on campus with his every day training partner, Locke. From the start of the rounds, the day shaped up to be a special one.

Locke, competing in his first season for the 'Noles, dropped a career-best time of 6.63 in the preliminary round. edging Bracy who won his heat in 6.64.

"I was kind of shocked; kind of surprised," Locke said, after bettering his previous season best of 6.67. "It felt good just to get in that area. "I was so focused on executing the semis were easier."

Bracy came right back in the semifinals, blazing to an NCAA-leading time of 6.57 for the heat win, while Locke lowered his preliminary round mark with a 6.61 to win the second semifinal heat.

"When I saw he (Locke) ran 6.63 and I ran 6.64, I just felt like we were both getting better," Bracy said. "I felt like I had so much more to leave out on the track. I was just chilling and got faster each round."

After trading blows through the rounds, the two were anxious to test their boundaries in the final. Buoyed by the confidence he gained through the rounds, Locke was more than pleased to walk away from the night with the nation's second-fastest time. "I train with one of the best sprinters in the country, so it makes it easier for me to focus on what I've got to do," Locke said. "Practicing with him and running with him - he was next to me (in the finals) - so it made it feel like it was practice."

Associate head coach Ken Harnden could not have been more pleased with the way his two sprint stars handled their business against a quality field, which included seven of the 10 fastest 60-meter runners this season at the collegiate level. "They handled it really well," Harnden said. "They executed. They were really coachable today. ... They did a really good job of controlling everything and taking the race by the scruff of the neck and saying, `It's mine.' I'm really proud of those guys."

While Bracy's star continues to shine, Locke's performance may have been even more important. The transfer from Tennessee has had to sit out two of his first three seasons on the college level and is just now beginning to show the form that led him to the Florida high school state 100-meter dash record as a senior at Tampa Chamberlain. Coincidentally, Bracy broke Locke's state mark as a high school sophomore at Orlando's Boone high school.

"When you think about it, it's only Locke's second year of collegiate track & field, so he's really young (competitively)," Harnden said. "That's pretty special. And Bracy, to do what he's done in his second meet is pretty special. ...

"Locke needed this in order to trust what we do in practice every day. I think Bracy is at that point in his life and his career where it's all good." Several other Seminoles turned in impressive Friday performances at meet as well. Sophomore Stefan Brits was the runner-up in the invitational section of the long jump with an all-time indoor best of 7.72 meters (25-4), which leads the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranks eighth nationally.

"Stefan jumped really well," Harnden said. "It's an indoor PR and it's very close to an outdoor PR, which is big for him. He's been battling this injury and not been practicing as much as we'd like to but he got out there and competed and he was in there with the big dogs."

Junior Elizabeth Ichite bettered her previous indoor personal-best in the 400-meter dash, racing to victory in her heat with a time of 54.87. It was the ninth-best time in the field of 61 competitors - eighth among collegians - and obliterated her previous indoor best of 56.13.

"Liz ran really well in a pretty good field, early in the day after a long trip last night," Harnden added. "I'm really happy with her race. There's more there. I was really excited about that."

Redshirt freshman pole vaulter Karly Jackson also recorded a new personal-best, clearing 3.70 meters (12-1.50) on her second attempt, which was good enough for a share of fifth place in the collegiate division. Jackson came into the meet with a personal-best of 11-8.50.

The action was not reserved for the Tyson Invitational. At the Husky Invitational on the University of Washington campus, senior Kayleigh Tyerman whacked 14 seconds off her previous personal best in the 5000-meter run, placing 15th in a loaded field with a time of 16.12.17.

Track 'Noles spread out for final ACC Indoor Championship tune-up.

Feb. 9, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The Florida State track & field teams logged more than 7,400 frequent flyer miles over the weekend, with athletes spread out over three meets from Seattle, Wash., Birmingham, Ala. and Fayetteville, Ark. in their final tune-up before the ACC Indoor Championships.

It was a productive effort across the board, which has head coach Bob Braman feeling a lot better about the direction of the Seminole men and women.

There were no fewer than 19 new personal-best marks established over the course of competitions on Friday and Saturday, in addition to quite a few season-bests.

"Obviously the national people stepped up and that was exciting - primarily the two 60-meter guys (Marvin Bracy and Dentarius Locke," Braman said. "They really put a message out there. It was a typical last meet before conference, where you like were really excited about the direction certain people are going. ...

"All in all there are some really encouraging things and we're going to go to the conference championship meet with a chance to compete. I know a month ago I didn't feel that way. We're finally getting into form, so that's exciting."

Braman and women's distance coach Karen Harvey took a small but strong core of distance runners to the Husky Invitational and came away with five new personal-best marks. On Saturday, Jakub Zivec shaved 13 seconds off his previous best in the 3000 meters (8:08.21) to open the day. David Forrester registered the No. 2 time in the ACC with his 4:01.51 season debut in the mile. Darrin Gibson also notched a season-best in the 800 (1:49.85), which also ranks second among ACC runners.

The women received a second consecutive outstanding race from Jessica Parry, who crushed her personal-best in the 3000 with a time of 9:15.97, taking over the ACC lead In that event. Colleen Quigley was right behind her with a new best of 9:16.75, which is second among conference runners.

Amanda Winslow was solid again in the mile, placing 10th in another loaded field - eighth among collegians - in 4:36.35. Freshman Georgia Peel was close behind, lowering her all-time indoor mile best to 4:37.21 to place 12th overall and 10th among collegians. They now rank 1-2 among ACC runners at the mile distance.

There were fewer big marks by the Seminoles at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday, but associate head coach Ken Harnden was no less encouraged. Phillip Young put together a strong performance in the triple jump, closing out the competition with an ACC-leading leap of 15.89 meters (52-1.75) on his final attempt to place sixth overall.

The women's 4x400 relay team of Sage Watson, Elizabeth Ichite, Sarah Chandler and Marsha Ariol shaved five seconds off their previous season best to tally the ACC's second-faster time of the year in 3:41.42.

Harnden also liked sophomore Stephen Newbold's 400-meter relay leg of 46.33; a promising sign froth defending ACC indoor champion.

The 19 personal-best marks in the last meet before the ACC Championship did not go unnoticed.

"That's a great weekend," Harnden said. "Anytime you see improvement across the board - with at least half the people that traveled getting at least season-bests or PR's - it means we're doing some things the right way."

With Bracy and Locke leading the way with the nation's two fastest times in the 60-meter dash on Friday, and Stefan Brits registering an ACC-leading long jump of 7.72 meters (25-4), there were not shortage of positives.

"I think we established ourselves a little bit, back to the old days of Florida State, with getting people if not in the (NCAA Championship) meet, then very close to the meet Phillip, Stefan, Marvin, Locke. That's always a good thing. Then the women are starting to move in the right direction and that's good."

There were quite a few highlights at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. on Saturday as well, most notably new career-best standards by junior Stargell Williams in the shot put and sophomore Markindey Sineus in the weight throw. Williams unleashed a strong series of throws, including an all-time best - indoors or outdoors - of 17.10 meters (56-1.25), which ranks fifth in the ACC.

"Stargell had a huge meet and I was very, very excited about that," Harnden said of the Chiles High graduate. "It puts him where coach (Dorian) Scott thought he was in practice, so showing that in competition was really good."

Competing in his first meet of the season after dealing with a family tragedy, Sineus rose to the occasion with a throw of 17.64 meters (57-10.50), which ranks sixth in the ACC.

"Markindey has had a really rough go of it personally and to be able to come back and compete at your best ever ... He's done an amazing job," Harnden said. "The whole team is supporting him big-time."

Freshman pentathlete gives 'Noles first ACC Indoor points

Feb. 21, 2013

BLACKSBURG, VA - Florida State freshman Ewa Marcinkiewicz posted the second-fastest time in 800-meter run in Thursday's final event of the pentathlon, which completed her rally to an eighth-place finish and the first point of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Marcinkiewicz entered the final event in 11th place; 131 points behind the eighth and final scoring position. She proceeded to overhaul Georgia Tech's Alex Braxton and Donjhae Jones, and Wake Forest's Erika Martin, by piling up 808 points with her first heat win in 2:21.17. Only Maryland's Thea LaFond, the overall champion, was faster (2:20.63) around the Rector Fieldhouse track on the Virginia Tech campus.

A native of Vasteras, Sweden, Marcinkiewicz finished with 4,405 points over the five-event competition to become the first Seminole to score in the pentathlon at the ACC Championship since school record holder Deanna Lane placed fourth in 2006.

Competing in only her second pentathlon as a Seminole, Marcinkiewicz registered season-best marks in the shot put (8.98 meters/29-5.50) and the long jump (5.37m/17-7.50).

Record-Setters & Contenders.

Women's DMR, Harris in high jump lift 'Noles at ACC Indoors.

Feb. 23, 2013

BLACKSBURG, VA - Regardless the year, there are two missions on the first full day of Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship meet competition: Pile up as many points as possible and nail down as many qualifying spots for Saturday's finals.

The Florida State men's and women's teams did just enough to both to maintain their championship aspirations Friday inside Rector Fieldhouse on the Virginia Tech campus, shattering on ACC Championship record and matching another along the way.

Bob Braman's 12th-ranked Seminoles, in pursuit of their 10th conference indoor title in 11 years, enter the final day trailing the host Hokies by 22 points. FSU's women, who are unranked but have finished first or second for five consecutive seasons, are five points off the lead in third place. That's three spots - but just 2.50 points - in front of fourth-ranked Clemson. The Tigers are three-time defending champions.

"I don't know who had the better day, the men or the women," Braman said at the end of Friday's competition. "If you had written all of the performances down and said, `Will you accept this for the first day?' I would have said, yes, absolutely!"

Junior James Harris, a transfer from Mississippi State, made his Seminole debut a memorable one, winning the high jump in an ACC Championship record-tying leap of 2.23 meters (7-3.75) in the first final of the day. Harris dethroned defending champ Kris Kornegay-Gober, who set the meet record in 2012, and moved into a tie for 12th on this year's NCAA list. He also earned a share of the Florida State school indoor mark, held alone by Shawn Brown since 2001.

The Florida State women's distance medley relay provided the perfect bookend to Friday's full slate, shattering its own ACC Championship record with one of the fastest times in NCAA history. Amanda Winslow led from the opening gun in the 1200 meter leg and the Seminoles never looked back as Sage Watson (400), Georgia Peel (800) and Colleen Quigley (1600) brought home the baton in 10:57.41.

Not only did the quartet eradicate the meet record set a year ago by the `Noles (11:08.17), they also secured an NCAA Championship appearance with the nation's second-fastest time this season, and the 12th-fastest of all time.

"We're in (the NCAA meet)," ecstatic FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "Now we can train. We can relax. We don't have to travel. With two freshmen, a sophomore, led by a senior - that was incredible."

Though the `Noles controlled the race from Winslow's opening leg, they very nearly suffered a catastrophe when Quigley collided with a stationary NC State runner on the track.

"Colleen had to run really hard," Harvey said. "With the collision and having to pass a lot of the field, she really ran hard for this team. But you can't really pick one person. They all ran as hard as they could, for 4000 meters, together."

FSU's women scored 18 of their 34 first-day points in Friday's final two events. Senior Kayleigh Tyerman out-dueled NC State's Andie Cozzarelli in a final lap sprint to place second in the 5000 meters, crossing in 16:18.69. The rest of the points from the Seminole women came from a cast of newcomers and youngsters. Freshmen Maryke Brits (6.10m/20-0.25) and Der'Renae Freeman (6.94/19-6) each registered season-best marks in the long jump to place fifth and seventh, respectively, while classmate Hannah Actontied for fifth in the pole vault, matching her season-best mark (3.87m/12-8.25).

Sophomore Briana Cherry-Bronson placed fifth in the weight throw (18.75/61-6.25) and fellow soph Lakitta Johnson launched a mammoth personal best (17.95/58-10.75) to finish seventh.

Equally important, the `Noles advanced two runners to Saturday's finals of the 60-meter dash (Marecia Pemberton and Anne Zagre), two to the 60-meter hurdles (Zagre and Brits) and two more in the 400 (Watson and Elizabeth Ichite).

"I'm blown away," Braman said of the women's performance. "They (Clemson) are still the team to beat. They've got the giant sprint points like we do on the men's side, but we're in the shouting. We've got the 3000, which we're obviously going to get some key points in. We've got some (finals) qualifiers. We're going to need a few breaks."

Many of the biggest breaks went the way of the Hokies on the men's side Friday. Virginia Tech maximized its scoring opportunities with wins in the distance medley, 5000 meters, long jump and a 1-2-3 sweep of the weight throw. Still, the `Noles are within striking distance, thanks to some banner efforts of their own.

FSU received a huge lift from senior Michael Fout, who came within less than one second of winning the 5000 meters out of the slow heat. Fout and Breandan O Neill plowed their way to a 1-2 finish in the opening heat in 14:02.26 and 14:10.96, respectively, then waited out the fast heat results to find out that were good enough to place second and fifth, overall. That 12-point haul offset Virginia Tech's win in the event.

Sophomore Stefan Brits and junior Phillip Young dialed up impressive efforts in the long jump, which were good enough to bring in 14 points for the Seminoles. Brits was the runner-up with a brilliant series of leaps, highlighted by his best of 7.69 (25-2.75), while Young placed third on the strength of his season-best of 7.41 (24-3.75).

One of the brightest surprises was provided by sophomore Markindey Sineus who, in his second meet of the season, smashed his career-best mark in the weight throw by nearly a full meter. Sineus finished sixth on the strength of his throw of 18.36 (60-3); nearly three feet further than his previous best set just two weeks ago.

The distance medley relay of Zak Seddon, Darrin Gibson, Ricardo Roy and David Forrester brought home a fourth-place finish in 9:52.50 to round out the first-day scoring for the `Noles.

Equally important to FSU's championship hopes, the Seminole sprinters are well-positioned to lead a big Saturday scoring charge. Marvin Bracy, Dentarius Locke and David Ambler advanced to the finals of the 60-meter dash, while Locke also earned the top qualifying mark in the 200 finals, where he will be joined by Stephen Newbold.

Newbold was the No. 2 qualifier overall for the 400-meter finals and leads a Seminole posse which includes James Harris and Alonzo Russell. Darrin Gibson qualified third and freshman Jacob Burton fifth in the 800. Tremaine Grant also grabbed the final qualifying spot in the 60-meter hurdles. Whether it will be enough to overhaul Virginia Tech's 22-point advantage is anyone's guess, but the `Noles did rally from 29.50 points on the final day to beat the Hokies for the 2012 title.

"It's a familiar position, chasing the home team," Braman said. "They (Virginia Tech) really had as good a day as I've seen a team have on Friday. ... We had a better day than I imagined. We did a lot of things as good as we could do.

"Markindey (Sineus), with the stuff he's had to overcome, PR's and gets sixth place (in the weight throw). Mike (Fout) gets out here and sets and indoor PR and challenges for the ACC Championship record. It's kind of hard to be upset. The 200 and 400 qualifiers were impressive. And in the high jump, James Harris ties the ACC Championship record.

"Good gosh, what could we ask for and still be 22 points down. All we can do is keep putting the pressure on them and hope they blink or have some fortune go the other way."

A Pair Of Strong Seconds.

Seminoles shine in ACC Indoor Track Championships runner-up finishes.

Feb. 23, 2013

BLACKSBURG, VA - Florida State's stars shined on the final day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, with the men and women combining for three wins, including a championship meet record for senior Amanda Winslowin the 3000-meter run.

Sophomore Stephen Newbold and junior Phillip Youngwere named MVP's for the track and field events, respectively, while a dozen Seminoles - eight men and four women - earned All-ACC honors.

By nearly every measure it was an outstanding day, which made a pair of team runner-up finishes only a bit more palatable.

The Seminole men began Saturday trailing host Virginia Tech by 22 points, fell behind by as many as 46 early in the day, then rallied to within three points with two events remaining. The Hokies, however, sealed the win by outscoring FSU 16-8 in the 3000-meter finals, despite a courageous runner-up finish by Jakub Zivec.

"I thought we had a whale of a meet," FSU head coach Bob Bramansaid. "We had the momentum, we were going forward, then a couple of little things happened. We had an OK (men's) 400, but not quite what we were hoping for. The pole vault had flipped our way, then in one jump it was a four-point swing. ... It all happened quickly - the pole vault, the 400 and the 800. ...

"We needed to get them all; all that we really could. In the end we didn't get them all. I'm not sure we didn't have as good a meet as we had last year when we won. The point total says we did."

Virginia Tech prevailed on the men's side, 153-136.

The Florida State women entered the meet as heavy underdogs to three-time defending champion Clemson, and the fourth-ranked Tigers made it four in a row by a 141.5-100 final margin over the `Noles. It marks the sixth consecutive season the FSU women have finished in the top-two at the end of the final day.

Women's distance coach Karen Harvey's charges contributed 46 points to the cause, including 28 in the 3000-meter final on Saturday, which Winslow won in an ACC Championship meet record of 9:08.13. Colleen Quigley and Jessica Parry followed Winslow across the line in a 1-2-3 sweep and Kayleigh Tyerman added a fifth-place finish to the point haul, which locked up the runner-up finish.

"Amanda loves running for her team," said Harvey, whose senior star continues to cement her standing as one of the best distance runners in school history. "She loves Florida State and loves going out there and getting points for FSU and it shows every time she goes to conference. ...

"We came in with a lot of goals with the distance group and I honestly don't know how much more we could have squeezed out of those six girls. Almost everybody met all the goals they came in with. That's just incredible. I'm very proud of them and really excited about outdoors and trying to get even more points."

The Seminole men were once again led by a dominant sprint contingent, paced by freshman Marvin Bracy, junior transfer Dentarius Lockeand Newbold, a sophomore, who made the leap from ACC Indoor Rookie of the Year to the MVP on the track in his second season.

Over the course of the three-day meet, where the seeding of athletes seldom held up, Bracy and Locke held up true to form with their 1-2 finish in the 60-meter finals. Bracy won in 6.57, with Locke (6.58) attached at the hip as they crossed the finish line well ahead of the field. Teammate David Ambler was eighth, providing the `Noles with 19 points as they began to chip away at the Hokies.

Newbold began his day by finishing second in the 400-meter dash finals (47.16), despite winning the first of two final heats. Perhaps motivated by the runner-up spot, the Bahamas native left no doubt in the 200-meter final, winning with an indoor personal best of 20.90 which likely secured a spot in the NCAA Championship field. Locke was second in 21.02, which has him on the cusp of a 200 NCAA berth as well.

Tremaine Grantcame through with one of several surprise performances in the 60-meter hurdles. Seeded eighth entering the finals, Grant nabbed fourth place in an indoor-best mark of 7.95.

In all, the Seminole men earned 55 points from the sprint group covering the 60, 60 hurdles, 200 and 400.

"I liked the highlights, because the highlights help you in two weeks (at the NCAA Championship)," Braman said. "We have some opportunities going forward."

The Seminole men also received a lift in the field events. Young finished second in the triple jump Saturday, while Owen Cain nailed down fourth place with his best effort of the year. Andrew Lahaye was the runner-up in the pole vault and Drew Marcello finished eighth to contribute to the cause. Stargell Williams and Jeff Pelagetag-teamed for four points, finishing sixth and eighth in the shot put.

Zivec very nearly pulled off a monster upset when he mounted a late kick on Virginia Tech All-American Will Mulherin in the 3000-meter finals. After running in the top four throughout the entire race, the junior launched a mammoth charge that came up just .22 of the win in 8:04.61.

While Winslow and the women's distance crew provided the lone win Saturday, a number of `Noles came through with big days. Junior Chelsea Whalen registered a personal-best in the shot put (15.75 meters) to secure a third-place finish and junior classmate Anne Zagrebroke up Clemson's podium domination in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best 8.21 in the finals that puts her on the cusp of an NCAA qualifying mark.

Marecia Pemberton was fourth in the 60-meter dash in a season-best 7.37 - Zagre was fifth - while Elizabeth Ichite was fourth in the 400-meter final (54.61). Sage Watsonwas denied a shot at podium when she got tangled with a Clemson runner rounding the final turn and went sprawling into the infield. Watson got up and still managed to finish sixth in a 59.24.

FSU's women closed out the scoring with a runner-up finish in the 4x400 relay as anchor Marsha Ariol - who was joined by Ichite, Sarah Chandlerand Watson - held off a late charge by Miami at the finish to cross the line in a season-best 3:40.07.

"We're starting to get those scrappy points," Braman said. "The women reached 100 points. They haven't done that since they won the won triple crown in 2009."

Track 'Noles Lock Up NCAA Berths.

High jumper James Harris and 4x400 relay get job done.

NOTRE DAME, IN and JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Florida State men's indoor track & field team did not emerge from the final weekend of the regular season unrewarded. The Seminoles locked up a pair of NCAA Indoor Championship berths at the Alex Wilson Invitational on the Notre Dame campus with a pair of big performances.

Facing "last-chance" opportunities to lock up one of the top 16 spot in individual events - and top 12 in the relays - the Seminoles cashed in.

Junior James Harris followed up his ACC Championship victory in the high jump with a new season-best - and an FSU indoor school record - by leaping 2.26 meters (7-5) for the win at Notre Dame on Saturday. Harris is now tied for sixth nationally in the high jump.

Perhaps even more impressively, associate head coach Ken Harnden watched as his 4x400 relay team of Alonzo Russell, Harris, Dentarius Locke and Stephen Newbold blasted their way through a stout field for a championship-qualifying - and winning - time of 3:06.55. By racing past top teams from LSU, Pitt, Illinois and Baylor, among others, the Seminoles are headed back to the NCAA Championship meet in the event for the first time since the 2009 squad set the school record with a time of 3:05.48.

"We can run," said Harnden, who decided to give the quartet a chance at a qualifying mark en route to South Bend, Ind. "There was really nothing to lose."

Russell led off with a 47.3 split and Harris, fresh off his high jump win, put the `Noles in the thick of the fight with a 46.2 leg. Locke, a late addition to the group, kept FSU in the hunt with a rock-solid 47.1, turning the baton over to Newbold, who brought it home in 45.8.

"I'm really excited about it," Harnden said of the qualifying mark. "They all competed really great."

Florida State will be well-represented at the NCAA Indoor Championships, which get underway Friday at Arkansas' Tyson Randall Track Complex in Fayetteville. Six Seminole men - Marvin Bracy and Locke (60-meter dash), Newbold (200), Harris (high jump), Stefan Brits (long jump) and Phillip Young (triple jump) - are currently ranked within the top 16 of their respective individual events, while the 4x400 relay is well within the top 12.

The Seminole women will be represented by senior Amanda Winslow (Mile, 3000) and the Distance Medley Relay, which will include Sage Watson, Georgia Peel, Colleen Quigley and Jessica Parry. Anne Zagre is right on the bubble of qualifying in the 60-meter hurdles and will learn her fate in the next two days.

The NCAA will post the qualifying field tomorrow and teams will have until late Monday to declare their athletes or make scratches.

Harris got Saturday's action going by bettering his ACC mark of 2.23.

"He bumped (the bar) with his hand," Harnden said of the winning leap. "Other than that, he cleared it by three or four inches. We stopped him there to get him ready for the 4x4."

`Noles win five events at UNF Spring Break Invitational
In addition to the weekend contingent that made "last chance" runs at NCAA Indoor Championship marks, a smaller group of Florida State men and women traveled to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the UNF Spring Break Invitational outdoors.

The Seminoles came away from the blustery season-opening event with five victories. Freshman Hannah Acton won the pole vault (3.85m/12-7.50), while classmate Kellion Knibb made her FSU debut with a win in the shot put (14.44m/47-4.50). On the men's side, Josh Gracia was victorious in the 5000-meter run (14:51.84) and freshman Cristobal Hurtado-Arteaga captured the high jump with a leap of 2.05m (6-8.75). Garrett Singletary unleashed his all-time best mark in the javelin to win the event with a mark of 57.50m (188-8).

Brittany Linder placed third in the discus with her lifetime best effort of 40.29m (132-2)@

Highs And Lows To Start The Show.

Brits, women's DMR and Winslow shine; false starts doom sprint duo.

March 9, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - A poised performance by senior Amanda Winslow, an uplifting effort by sophomore Stefan Brits and a gutsy rally by the Florida State women's distance relay team highlighted Friday's opening action at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Winslow opened the night by qualifying for Saturday's mile final with the fastest time (4:36.38) and Brits gave the Seminole men's team their first points of the meet with a sixth-place finish in the long jump (7.80m/25-7.50).

The Seminoles' distance medley team rallied from 11th to a fourth-place finish behind brilliant legs from Sage Watson, Georgia Peel and Colleen Quigley, crossing in 11:00.87 to close out FSU's first day.

Unfortunately, what transpired between the fast start and the strong finish created even more buzz throughout the Randal Tyson Track Complex. Seminoles Marvin Bracy and Dentarius Locke, the top two seeds in the 60-meter dash, were disqualified for false starts - each out of lane two - in the two preliminary heats.

Florida State coach Bob Braman called it, "the most improbable script."

"Part of being a great sprinter is being patient and knowing the cadence of the starter and being on-task," Braman said, after watching Bracy get red-carded from the first heat and Locke from the second. "If you're one-one thousandth off, like in Dentarius' case, you're out.

"In Marvin's case, maybe he was a little too anxious and tried to do something big. I feel for those guys. You may never see those guys do that again, and I hope so."

Those miscues, which will cost the FSU men's team dearly in their bid for a top-five team finish, provide a sharp contrast to the other performances turned in by the Seminoles.

Winslow, who is making her fourth consecutive and final NCAA Indoor Championship appearance, took the lead on the third of eight laps and was never seriously threatened.

"I didn't have an exact plan going in because anything can happen," Winslow said. "I was prepared mentally ... I'd say the biggest thing was telling myself that I was OK and that I was ready to unleash a little bit the last 400, but also save a little bit.

"I knew at the 800 that it was slower than the first race, so I knew I had to pick it up. I didn't want to chance it. I didn't want to risk running 4:40 and getting out-kicked."

FSU's school record-holder in the mile never let that happen, cranking out laps 5-8 in 34.25, 33.61, 32.66 and 33.01 to win her heat by nearly a full second over Georgia's Carly Hamilton. With an eye on improving on her fifth-place finish in the mile at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championship, Winslow will face a formidable challenge from Colorado's Emma Coburn, the top seed coming into the meet, who won the first heat in 4:37.47.

"Amanda Winslow was in command the whole way," Braman said. "She looked like a senior who was on her fourth rodeo."

FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey was equally impressed with her veteran star. "Winslow ran with confidence," Harvey added. "She is in the shape of her life. Yes, tomorrow will be a challenge, but she is ready for it."

Brits, making his first NCAA Championship appearance, didn't waste the opportunity to leave his mark. The South Africa native, who has labored through years of ups and down related to a hamstring issue, came into the event seeded No. 14. He earned three more jumps by grabbing the last qualifying spot for the finals and made them count.

His fourth jump of the night - a career-best 7.80 meters (25-7.50) - was good enough to nail down sixth place.

"You've got to do it on the day," Brits said. "If you focus on yourself and you picture it and execute, something's going to happen. That's exactly what happened. A PR for the first time in five years? I'll take that as a positive."

As a 16-year-old in 2008, Brits soared to his previous personal best (7.74), on the Junior World stage.

"I've struggled the past five years in South Africa," Brits said. "Just to compete and to be here and jump without any hassle, injuries or setbacks is a huge positive for outdoors, which is our main goal."

"The guy has fought through some horrendous, nagging and long two years of injuries," Braman said. "To come up and hit two big jumps, I can't say enough about Stefan Brits. This is his first national meet and that's pretty special."

The night of special performances wasn't through.

FSU's women's distance medley was the No. 3 seed, based on their ACC performance which included Winslow running the leadoff, 1200-meter leg. Redshirt junior Jessica Parry took Winslow's spot and was running in third with a lap to go before fading.

The Seminoles, however, weren't through. Watson, a freshman, grabbed the stick in 11th place and turned in a blistering 53.10 400-meter split - the second fastest of any woman in the 12-team field - as Stanford and FSU closed quickly on the lead group. The `Noles were still 11th when she passed the baton to classmate Peel, who ripped off a 2:06.17 800-meter leg - also the second-fastest in the field - as the `Noles moved into ninth.

Quigley, a sophomore, took matters into her own hands over the final 1600 meters. The 2012 outdoor and cross country All-American powered the `Noles all the way into fourth place with the fastest final leg of any team - 4:32.28 - to secure All-American honors for the quartet.

"The distance medley relay ran with a lot of heart; having Sage and Georgia run the second-fastest splits, then Quigley came with the big guns with a huge 4:32 split," Harvey said.

Junior Anne Zagre, who was late entry into the 60-meter hurdles field, placed seventh in her qualifying heat in 8.29, but was later disqualified for a technical violation. She would not have advanced.

Beyond Winslow's run at her first NCAA title in her final indoor competition, the Seminoles will be busy Saturday, with James Harris and Phillip Young competing in the high jump and long jump, respectively. Winslow is also scheduled to compete in the 3000, while the fourth-seeded FSU men's 4x400 relay team of Alonzo Russell, Harris, Locke and Stephen Newbold, will bring the meet to a close.

"We've got scoring opportunities in the triple jump, high jump and 4x400," Braman said. "Hopefully we can still fight our way back into the top 10 and start to put things together for outdoors."

Records Fall On Final Night.

Winslow, men's 4x400 close NCAA Indoors on high note.

March 10, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - The Florida State track & field teams took down two school records on the final night of the NCAA Indoor Championships, which coach Bob Braman hopes will help set the tone for a more prosperous outdoor season.

The Seminole men's 4x400 relay team pulled the curtain on Saturday night's competition at the Randal Tyson Track Complex, racing to a bronze medal finish in 3:05.13. The team of Alonzo Russell, James Harris, Dentarius Locke and Stephen Newbold broke the previous record set in 2009 (3:05.48) by a team which included 2012 Olympic 400-meter finalists Jonathan and Kevin Borlee, along with Kevin Williams and Brandon O'Connor.

"We ended on a high note," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "We talked about it before we went out there: `Let's start the outdoor season on a good note and wash away all the stuff that happened yesterday.

"Those four did an amazing job. They put forth the most amazing effort and did it when the chips were down and we could have folded out tent. I couldn't be more proud. And to break a record of a relay that had two Olympians and two other guys who were pretty good, that's special."

A day earlier, Harnden watched helplessly as FSU's bid for a top 10 finish vanished with false starts by favorites Marvin Bracy and Locke in the 60-meter qualifying heats.

With its third-place finish in the 4x400 relay - and junior Phillip Young's seventh-place showing in the triple jump - the sixth-ranked men finished with 11 points and locked in a three-way tie for 18th place in the team standings with Georgia and Purdue. It's the lowest finish for the Seminoles since they tied for 44th in 2004. Host Arkansas claimed the men's championship with a whopping 74 points.

While the men came up short of performing to their ranking, the Seminole women exceeded expectations, thanks to the distance crew led by assistant Karen Harvey.

Senior Amanda Winslow provided the `Noles with their only points of the day, and did so in dramatic fashion. In her fourth consecutive and final NCAA Indoor appearance, Winslow matched 2012 Olympian Emma Coburn of Colorado stride-for-stride until the final 100 meters.

Winslow crossed the finish line in 4:31.08 and in second place, lopping more than two seconds off her own school record (4:33.22), established earlier in the season.

"I don't know that I would have expected more than they did," Florida State head coach Bob Braman said, after the 18th-ranked women earned a share of 15th place and finished with 13 points. "They did an unbelievable job.

"Coach Harvey, her ladies always perform. She's raised the bar for the rest of us, and all of the other events, and we'll get there."

FSU's women finished tied with Michigan and UCLA, well behind Oregon, which successfully defended it national title title with 56 points.

Following Friday's fourth-place finish by the distance medley relay, Winslow devised a race plan with Harvey that would put her in the hunt for a title.

"I sat down this morning and talked about a race plan and it went almost exactly how we predicted it," Winslow said. "I just stuck to the plan. I wish I had a little bit more left in the end, but I'm extremely satisfied with it - a PR, a school record and I qualified for USA's."

Harvey was elated with the performance of her most recent All-American miler, who was hoping to etch her name alongside Hannah England, who won the 2008 national championship in the event.

"She made Emma Coburn run hard," Harvey said. "We knew that coming in, Amanda was not the favorite, but she's in the conversation to win and she went for it. She had one move and she made the move, a little earlier than I wanted. I was talking 100 to go.

"Winslow felt so good, she went early. How can you fault her, when she goes on her heart? Her heart said, `I feel too good, I want to lay it out.'"

Instead, Winslow settled for a lifetime-best, which earned her a spot in the field for this summer's U.S. National Championship meet. In the process, she was able to exceed the preseason goals she had established for herself and were hung on the wall of her apartment as a daily reminder.

"It's definitely been written on my wall," Winslow confessed. "At the beginning of each season I write down on a piece of paper my goals. I wrote them real big so I could see them every day. I wanted to run 4:32, or break that, so I got that goal."

"Susan Kuijken never ran this fast," Harvey said. "Hannah England never ran this fast. She's just following in their footsteps and now all of a sudden she's decided, `I'm going to lead the way.' ...

"She didn't win a national championship, but she's the fastest we've ever had."

Winslow extended the Harvey-coached Seminoles' streak of consecutive All-American milers to six years.

The Seminole men came into the final day of the meet with three scoring opportunities and cashed in on two of them. Harris, who had the sixth-best high jump mark in the country, was one of 10 athletes to clear 2.23 meters (7-3.75). A year ago, that was the winning mark at the NCAA Indoor Championships. On Saturday, it did not guarantee a spot in the top eight.

"The guys competed well, with the exception the anomaly of the 60-meter dash," Braman said, referencing Friday's disastrous false starts by Bracy and Locke.

Young, who came into the meet as the No. 16 seed in the triple jump, broke out an opening attempt of 15.87m (52-1) - just off his all-time best of 16.00m - that got him into the finals. He strung together his most impressive series of the season, but could not improve on his opening effort.

Improvement, or more accurately, redemption, was on the mind of the men's 4x400 relay team.

"I was very determined," said Locke, who contributed a 46.69 third leg split in his first race of the meet. "It took me almost all the way to race came up to have yesterday out of mind. I talked to coach [Harnden] and he just told me to forget about it, move on and kill it in the 4x4. ... I definitely didn't want to let me team down; didn't want to let my school down."

The Seminoles came into the final event as the No. 4 seed but proved it belonged with powerhouses Arkansas and Florida, who were also competing in the third heat. Russell opened up with a 47.34 split. Harris, eager to make amends for his high jump showing, followed with a blistering 45.79 second leg, which put the `Noles in the thick of the race.

Locke faded a bit late in his third leg, but Newbold grabbed the stick and began stalking the front-runners.

"It meant everything to me," Newbold said. "It probably wasn't our A-team, but it doesn't really matter because all of my teammates put their heart into it.

"We really were (motivated). .. My teammates were ready; they were hungry and I was ready and hungry with them."

Newbold closed with a 45.37 leg that came up short of the Razorbacks and rival Gators, but also produced the seventh new indoor school record of the season.

Now the focus goes to the outdoor season, where the Seminoles will have a chance to apply and build on what they learned indoors.

"We've got to be better and it falls on distance, it falls on throwers, it falls on sprints and it falls on jumps," Braman said. "We've got to be better. Just because it looks like we will be isn't good enough. You've still got to be top 10, maybe top five, and of course, eventually be competing to win. We're not there yet. We've got work to do."

Solid Outdoor Start At USF.

Vets Ichite, Whalen pace strong effort by young women's team.

TAMPA, FL - Florida State juniors Elizabeth Ichite and Chelsea Whalen opened the outdoor track & field season with victories and personal-best performances Friday at the Bulls Invitational on the campus of USF.

Ichite won the 400-meter dash with a lifetime best time of 53.74, successfully defending her 2012 title at the meet. A year ago she won the Bulls Invitational in 53.91, which was not only her previous best, but qualified her for the NCAA East Preliminary.

Whalen delivered a victory in the shot put with her outdoor-best effort of 15.59 meters (51-1.75), pacing a strong day by the Seminole throwers. Sophomore Lakitta Johnson was third overall with a career-best throw of 14.46 (47-5.25), while freshman Kellion Knibb placed sixth (13.94m/45-9).

"It was a good tune-up for FSU Relays," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "We got some things accomplished. We got the outdoor season rolling, particularly for the throwers, and we're looking forward to the FSU Relays and taking that next step."

The Seminoles scored four individual victories - all from the women's team - and received a number of promising performances from athletes who were getting their first real taste of competition since the ACC Indoor Championship meet.

Most encouraging of all, many of best efforts came from first-year Seminoles.

Freshman Natalie Concepcion won the 800 meters (2:16.87) after placing sixth in her collegiate 1500-meter debut (4:38.83). Another freshman, Hannah Acton, won the pole vault with a mark of 3.80 meters (12-5.50).

Freshman Der'Renae Freeman was the runner-up in the women's long jump with her collegiate-best mark of 6.02m (19-9), while classmate Maryke Brits was fourth in the 100 hurdles in a career-best time of 14.07 and tied for fourth in the long jump (5.83m/19-1.50).

Grete Sadeiko, another Seminole freshman who is expected to provide a big lift in the heptathlon, began to tune up for her multi-event campaign by clearing 1.63m (5-4.25) in the high jump and running a very respectable 14.77 in the 100 hurdles. It was Sadeiko's first meet since suffering a leg injury at the start of the indoor season.

"I was pretty content," said Dennis Nobles, FSU's director of field events. "I think we moved in the right direction. (Grete) set herself up pretty well."

Senior Brittany Linder contributed her second consecutive career-best effort in the discus with a toss of 41.86m (137-4).

Nobles was also pleased with the fifth-place performance of pole vaulter Drew Marcello (4.90m/16-0.75), as well as his high jumpers, Cristobal Hurtado and Nick Medich, both of whom cleared 1.98m (6-6).

The top finisher for the Seminole men was junior transfer Stargell Williams, who was second overall and the first collegian in the shot put. Williams eclipsed his outdoor career-best mark with a throw of 16.94m (55-7), which was second to former FSU All-American Michael Putman's winning throw of 18.43 (60-5.75). Junior Phillip Young was also second in the long jump with his best mark of the day (7.21m/23-8) coming against a head wind.

Redshirt junior Tremaine Grant, competing in his first outdoor meet in two seasons, placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.47). Graduate student transfer Jeff Pelage came up just shy of his career-best in the discus with a sixth-place throw of 50.17m (164-7).

Finishing Flurry To Day 1.

Knibb, Quinn deliver first Seminole wins at FSU Relays.

March 22, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Freshman Kellion Knibbcapped a strong day by Florida State's field event competitors, closing Friday's 34th FSU Relays competition with a victory in the women's discus.

On a day when four Seminoles set personal-best marks in a wide range of field events, Knibb delivered FSU's first victory with a toss of 49.94 meters (163-10) in her debut at Mike Long Track.

Redshirt junior Sean Quinn gave the Seminoles a second victory, leading a pack of FSU runners across the finish line in the night-cap 10,000 meters (30:50.68). Quinn was one of five FSU runners to set new personal-best marks. Freshman Chris Godwin, who ran unattached, was second (31:13.55), followed by Marc Akbar (31:14.14) and Dominick Cabrera(31:19.87). Michael Wallace (31:25.69) was sixth.

"Obvioulsy the throws were very strong," Florida State head coach Bob Bramansaid. "All of our field events, if they weren't personal-bests or season-bests, they were still very good."

Redshirt sophomore Briana Cherry-Bronsonopened up her outdoor season in style, with a career-best mark in the weight throw (52.63m/172-8). Cherry-Bronson, who set the FSU record in the hammer indoors, finished second overall and was the first collegian in the opening event of the day. Her mark was is the fourth-best in school history.

The Seminole women didn't own the show. Sophomore Garrett Singletaryunleashed a near career-best in the javelin (58.26m/191-2) to place fourth overall and was the second finisher among collegians.

High jumpers Cristobal Hurtado and Nick Medich each turned in collegiate-best efforts, placing third and fourth with jumps of 2.06m (6-9) and 2.01 (6-7), respectively.

Junior Chelsea Whalen (44.22m/145-1) and freshman Grete Sadeiko (42.83/140-6) authored a 2-3 finish in the javelin, while freshmen pole vaulters Hannah Acton (3.86/12-8) and Karly Jackson(3.71/12-2) placed second and fourth.

Back on the track, junior Darrin Gibson stepped up to the 1500 meters for the first time in his career and delivered a runner-up finish in 3:50.22. On the women's side, sophomore Linden Hall continued her comeback from injury with a fourth-place finish in 4:28.07, and Chelsi Woodruffwas seventh (4:33.29).

Tremaine Grantcontributed a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (14.32) to the highlights.

More than 2,400 athletes are competing in the two day meet, which brings together not only outstanding collegiate, but also, high school competition. Friday's high school races produced meet records for the girls in the 400, 800 and 3200 events.

"This has been the high-water mark on the high school side," Braman said. "We've got meet records and just phenomenal high school competition and results at the highest level."

Rain Shortens FSU Relays.

Pelage delivers Seminoles third victory of meet.

March 23, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The 34th FSU Relays came to a premature conclusion Saturday at Mike Long Track when inclement weather brought the competition to a halt midway through the schedule.

Only five collegiate events were completed on a day that included a 2 ½-hour weather delay in the morning.

"It was really a good meet for high schools and colleges and unfortunately we couldn't finish it," ... "We were disappointed we couldn't take advantage of it the meet and get our work it. It is a credit to our facilities staff that we got any competition in."

Florida State senior Jeff Pelage delivered the Seminoles their third win of the two-day meet, capturing the discus with a throw of 48.85 meters (160-3). Junior Stargell Williams also placed seventh (45.53m/149-4).

Beyond Pelage's victory, two FSU women delivered encouraging performances. Freshman Stacey Drillingregistered her collegiate-best performance in the high jump, placing second after clearing 1.63 meters (5-4.25); her best showing indoors or outdoors in seven meets.

Redshirt junior Izehi Ileso, a former junior college national champion in the triple jump, came through with her best effort in five meets as a Seminole. Ileso's leap of 12.00 meters (39-4.50) was good for a fifth-place finish.

The Seminoles failed to place runners in either the men's or women's 200-meter dash events.

Hookin' Up A Hep At Texas.

Sadeiko 12th after day 1 of collegiate heptathlon debut.

March 27, 2013

AUSTIN, TX - Competing in the first heptathlon of her collegiate career, Florida State freshman Grete Sadeiko is in 12th place at the conclusion of the first day of competition at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

Sadeiko, a native of Estonia, has 3,183 points through the first four events against an opening field of 24 athletes that includes many of the nation's best multi-event performers.

"It's a solid start; a good start," Florida State assistant coach Dennis Nobles said. "All in all I'm pretty pleased with the day. There were ups and downs along the way. The hurdle race was going really well and all of sudden she hits the ninth hurdle and nearly falls down."

Sadeiko opened the competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium by running 14.59 in the 100-meter hurdles, which was good 897 points, despite the near disastrous mishap. She came back in the high jump with a last-attempt clearance of 1.69 meters (5-6.50), which netted 842 points.

A sub-par performance in the shot put (11.09m/39-0.50) was good for only 601 points, but Sadeiko closed her day in the 200 by running 25.48, which was good enough to add 843 points to her total.

With three events - the long jump, javelin and 800 - to be completed Thursday, Nobles is very optimistic about the direction Sadeiko is moving in their first heptathlon competition working together.

Despite her 12th-place standing after Wednesday's competition, Sadeiko is poised to make a significant move on a large group of athletes that are within striking distance. She is just 26 points out of 10th place and only 102 out of sixth against a field which includes some of the nation's best multi-event athletes.

Mississippi State's Erica Bougard, the NCAA Indoor Championship heptathlon winner, leads with 3,570 points. Arkansas' Makeba Alcide, the runner-up to Bougard indoors, is second with 3,480 points.

"It's a very good field," Nobles said. "Every year the Texas Relays multis puts six, seven or eight of the 24 (qualifiers) into the nationals. Everybody that's here will be a player on the national scene. It's a legitimate test."

Sadeiko is no stranger to the heptathlon. She finished fourth at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships when she recorded her all-time best total of 5,705 points, and was ninth at the 2011 World Junior Championships.

"She's a good second-day heptathlete," said Nobles, who would like Sadeiko to average 750 points over the final three events. "Her long jump is pretty good when things are clicking. Her javelin is very good compared to the rest of the field and her 800 is very solid.

"If she has a really good second day she could come close to her PR. ... If we can walk out of here with a score in the mid-5,400 or 5,550 range I'll be ecstatic about it."

A final total in that range should virtually assure Sadeiko one of the 24 spots in the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championship field. In 2012, the 24th and final qualifier for the NCAA meet had a season-best 5,093-point performance.

Day 2 Highlights From Texas Relays.

Watson qualifies for 400 hurdle finals; pole vaulters soar to season-best marks.

March 28, 2013

AUSTIN, TX - Florida State freshman Sage Watson's collegiate debut in the 400-meter hurdles proved successful as she nabbed the ninth and final qualifying spot for the finals on Thursday at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.

The Canadian native of Medicine Hat, Ontario made the one-lap trip around track at Mike A. Myers Stadium in 59.74 seconds to gain a spot in Friday's final.

Watson was one of five Seminoles in action Thursday, with seven others set to take the stage on Day 3 of the prestigious four-day meet.

Pole vaulters Andrew Lahaye and Drew Marcello also turned in season-best performances on Thursday. LaHaye, an NCAA Outdoor Championship qualifier as a last season, finished seventh by clearing 5.31 meters (17-5). Marcello, a redshirt junior who hopes to make his first NCAA appearance later this spring, took a step in the right direction. He cleared a career-best 5.21 meters (17-1), marking the first time he has been over the bar at better than 17 feet.

Freshman heptathlete Grete Sadeiko's day was going well - at least on the leaderboard - until she was forced to bow out of the competition before the seventh and final event. The Estonian native entered the day in 12th place and climbed all the way to sixth with 4,582 points after two events.

Sadeiko picked up 700 points in the long jump (18-0.50) and 699 with the fourth-best javelin throw (136-8) in the field. A sore foot prevented her from taking the track for the 800-meter run, the seventh and final event of the competition. On the cusp of likely registering an NCAA Championship qualifying mark, she will have to wait for another opportunity.

The only other Seminole in action Thursday was sophomore Sarah Chandler, who failed to advance from her preliminary heat of the 400 hurdles.

Track Freshmen Step Forward.

Moolman sets FSU javelin record; Knibb, Seddon and Watson shine.

March 29, 2013

AUSTIN, TX and STANFORD, CA - From Texas to California, Florida State's promising track & field freshmen didn't waste opportunities to leave their marks in major meet competition Friday.

Morne Moolman's collegiate debut at the 86th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will not soon be forgotten. The native South African unleashed a school record javelin throw of 73.83 meters (242-3), smashing the mark set 19 years ago - before he was born - by Lou Angelo.

Not only did Moolman blow past Angelo's record of 51.28m (233-10) with his third place toss, three of his four legal throws were better than the standard set in 1979.

"He's really talented," FSU Director of Field Events Dennis Nobles said. "For a college debut, to set a school record and throw within two meters of his PR, you can't beat that. Still, Morne didn't feel like he was as technically proficient as he would have liked, and I would agree with him."

Fellow freshmen Kellion Knibb and Zak Seddon didn't set school records Friday, but they don't have many people to climb over to get there, following their respective performances in the women's discus and men's 3000-meter steeplechase.

Knibb, Jamaica's junior national record holder, is now No. 2 all-time for the Seminoles on the strength of her second-place throw of 53.17m (174-5) at the Texas Relays. She became just the second FSU woman to eclipse 50 meters and trails only Makiba Batten on the schools' all-time top 10 list. Batten set the school mark of 55.22m (181-2) in 2003.

"She is such an athletic thrower," Nobles said. "Her potential is unlimited. It's kind of fun to watch out there because it's still kind of hit and miss. It was kind of breezy out here and on her 53-meter throw the wind just knocked it out of the sky, or it would have been really special."

Seddon delivered a special performance of his own on the West Coast when he dropped a 63.89 final lap to finish second in the steeplechase in 8:45.63 at the Stanford Invitational. Only school record holder Andrew Lemoncello (8:23.74) and Luke Gunn (8:28.40) have run faster for the Seminoles. Coincidentally, all three hail from Great Britain.

Two other Seminoles, senior co-captain Breandan O Neill and junior Josh Gracia, were schedule to run late-night 10,000-meter races.

Florida State's field event performer didn't solely own the show in Texas. Freshman Sage Watson, who qualified for the ninth and last spot in the 400-meter hurdle finals on Thursday, took full advantage of the opportunity. Despite running out of lane 1, Watson powered her way to the finish line for a fifth-place finish in 58.66.

"She handled herself very maturely," Nobles said, after Watson completed just her second 400-meter hurdle race at the collegiate level. "For a freshman to go out there and run the race she did, out of lane 1, says a lot. She was well within herself; ran a very smooth race and had a little bit left over when she came home. She does not like to be behind and it showed."

Strong performances weren't solely restricted to FSU freshmen. Junior co-captain Chelsea Whalen began a long day of competition early Friday morning with a fifth-place finish in the javelin (45.97m/150-10). She helped close the competition in the evening with a new outdoor personal-best in the shot put (15.68m/51-5.50), which was good for seventh place.

"This is just the beginning of our season," Nobles said. "It's very encouraging. I can't say anything bad about the effort they have put in out her. It was a very competitive effort."

Track 'Noles Pile Up Wins.

Field events, distance runners lead on opening night of Seminole Invitational.

April 12, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Florida State graduate student Jeff Pelage unleashed the No. 4 discus throw in school history Friday night, providing one of the highlights on the first day of competition at the Seminole Invitational.

Pelage posted a massive six-meter personal-best with a throw of 56.19 meters (184-4). The former Boston University basketball standout settled for second place behind former Seminole All-American Michael Putman, who won with a final throw of 56.36 (184-11).

The Seminole men and women earned their share of victories, and posted several solid marks in the final tune-up before next week's Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Raleigh, N.C.

FSU's field event performers were once again at the center of success.

James Harris matched his season-best by leaping 2.24m (7-4.25) to claim the high jump. Chelsea Whalen continued her strong spring performance with a victory in the javelin (44.31m/145-4), while freshman Der'Renae Freeman claimed the women's long jump with a season-best leap of 6.04m (19-9.75).

On the track, Kayleigh Tyerman ran elbow-to-elbow with 2012 FSU All-American Hannah Brooks and prevailed in the 3000-meter run (9:25.02). Senior Michael Fout rolled to an easy win in the 5000-meter run with a big push from mid-race on to finish in 14:45.25. The `Noles also received a win from Marc Akbar (8:57.50) in the 3000-meter run.

Beyond the winners, sophomore long jumper Stefan Brits placed second with a season-best mark of 7.59m (24-11). Former Seminole star and 2011 Bowerman Award winner Ngoni Makusha also made his competitive return in the long jump following Achilles surgery with fine short-approach mark of 7.50m.

Graduate student Stacey Alvarez made her Seminole debut with a third-place finish in the javelin (40.79m/133-10).

"The field events were pretty nice," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "The formerly injured Stefan Brits jumped at least a regional mark. Jeff [Pelage], every day I see him with his hand wrapped up in ice, comes out and throws a bomb. James Harris' knee had been bothering him and jumps 2.24. Mike Fout came back with a nice negative split.

"It was a pretty successful day. Those are potential national [scorers]. I'm looking forward to some things tomorrow."

Braman is expected hot competition in both the men's and women's 1500-meter run, the pole vault and the triple jump. Florida State will also eye NCAA East qualifying marks in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays for the men and women.

Fine-Tuning Complete!

FSU track teams sharp on final day of Seminole Invitational.

April 13, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, FL - A school record and a dozen personal-best performances on the final day of the Seminole Invitational provided the Florida State men's and women's track & field teams with momentum heading into next week's ACC Championship meet.

"The thing that we look for the week before the conference meet is that the athletes are locked-in, zoned-in, competing hard and ready to get to that meet," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "They're ready. I think our mental focus was really good."

Junior Chelsea Whalen's quest for the school record in the shot put ended with a breakthrough mark Saturday at Mike Long Track, when she uncorked a throw of 16.23 meters (53-3). The winning throw pushed her past Allyn Laughlin's four-year-old school standard (16.17m/53-0.75) and came one week after she moved into a tie for second place on FSU's all-time list with a throw of 16.15 at the Florida Relays.

The Seminoles accomplished quite a few of their goals over the two-day meet. The men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams put together performances worthy of getting into the fast heats at next week's ACC Championship meet in Raleigh, N.C., winning in 40.14 and 3:08.24, respectively.

As an added bonus, the FSU women's 4x400 team capped the day with what the coaching staff believes is the fastest time by a Seminole quartet in four seasons, winning in 3:38.42.

Individually, there was no shortage of highlights. Freshman Georgia Peel and sophomore Colleen Quigley rolled to a 1-2 finish in the 1500-meter run in 4:14.40 and 4:15.65. Those marks not only rank seventh and eighth in school history, but currently rank second and third, nationally. Sophomore Linden Hall was fifth in a lifetime-best 4:21.68., which should stand as an NCAA East Preliminary qualifying mark.

Saturday opened with sophomore Markindey Sineus registering the best hammer throw of his career - 59.07 meters (193-9) - which moved him into fifth on FSU's all-time list and gave the Seminoles the first of 10 wins on the day.

Junior Marecia Pemberton continued her comeback season with a season-best winning time of 11.64 in the 100-meter dash.

Tallahassee native and FSU junior Elizabeth Ichite led a 1-2 finish by the Seminoles in the 400-meter dash, winning in a career-best time of 53.14. FSU freshman Sage Watson chased her across the finish line with a season-best time of 53.54. Ichite and Watson also teamed with Sarah Chandler and anchor Marsha Ariol on the winning 4x400 relay.

On the men's side, freshman Zak Seddon pulled away on the final lap to capture the 1500-meter run in a solid time of 3:48.03. The men's makeshift 4x100 relay team of David Ambler, Dentarius Locke, Andrew Lahaye and James Harris secured the `Noles a spot in the fast heat of the ACC Championship meet with a winning time of 40.14. It marked the first time in three attempts this season that FSU was able to get the stick around the track this season.

Locke and Harris were joined by Alonzo Russell and Darrin Gibson on the winning 4x400 relay team.

A pair of Seminoles competing as unattached athletes - Josh Mance and Jake Burton - added to the victory total. Mance was the runaway winning in the 400-meter dash in a season-best 45.43, while Burton claimed the 800 in a lifetime-best mark of 1:50.07.

Beyond the wins, the `Noles also received season-best marks from a pair of freshman women. Hannah Acton was the runner-up in the pole vault (3.90m/12-9.50), while Kellion Knibb placed third in the shot put with a lifetime-best (15.10m/49-6.50).

"Whalen was big. Georgia Peel had the No. 3 or No. 4 performance in the country," Braman said. "That was big-time for Markindey. I want to give him a shout-out. The 4x400 ran 3:08 low and the 4x100 got in the fast heat at the ACC meet. The women's 4x400 ran 3:38. And Elizabeth (Ichite) was big-time. She almost cracked into 52s. ...

"Yesterday the field events were big. Today, the running events - that middle distance group from 400-800-1500 - was on fire. It was a good day. This Monday looks a lot brighter than last Monday."

Track 'Noles Come Out Throwing.

Knibb and Pelage win discus, O Neill defends ACC 10k title.

April 18, 2013

RALEIGH, NC- The Florida State track & field teams are off to a fast start at the 2013 ACC Outdoor Championships, thanks to a heaping pile of points from the field events and a strong close on the track.

Freshman Kellion Knibb and graduate student Jeff Pelage provided the Seminoles a sweep of the discus events on the opening day of competition Thursday at the Paul H. Derr Track.

Dominating the competition from the start, Knibb delivered the Seminoles their first women's discus title in 21 years of ACC championship competition. Four of Knibb's six throws eclipsed her previous career best, including the winning toss of 54.59 meters (179-1).

Unlike Knibb, who was the favorite entering the meet, Pelage stepped up as the underdog and delivered the FSU men their second ACC discus title in three years and just their third all time. The former Boston University basketball standout took the lead on his third of six throws, which measured 55.31 meters (181-5), and never let it go.

Senior Breandan O Neill pulled the curtain on the opening day of competition by successfully defending his 10,000-meter title (29:59.28). O Neill bided his time in a large pack throughout the first half of the 25-lap affair, then rocketed to the front with just over 1600 meters to go and was never threatened.

"Pelage is going to retire from the ACC in the discus undefeated and Brendo is going to retire in the 10k undefeated," FSU coach Bob Braman said. "And it was great to have the whole team there doing the Warchant. You leave the meet on a high note."

With wins in the only two finals contested on the men's side Friday, Florida State leads with 20 points, followed by Duke (19), North Carolina (15) and Virginia (10).

FSU's women will head into Friday's competition in second place with 27 points, just one behind NC State. Virginia (22) and three-time defending champion Clemson (19) are close behind.

"I thought we competed really well," Braman said. "Point-wise, did you really expect any more? No. We didn't lose any points and Virginia Tech's men lost a few.

"We kept our composure. ... It's going to be a really tight race if nobody blinks. It's going to come down to and digging down to the bottom of our guts to pull a point."

In addition to Knibb, the Seminoles received plenty of production from the field events as junior Chelsea Whalen earned All-ACC honors with a third-place finish in the javelin (45.70m/149-11) with Stacey Alvarez (40.59/133-2) contributing a sixth-place finish to the total. Freshman Hannah Acton placed seventh in the pole vault (3.90m/12-9.50).

Kayleigh Tyerman closed out the first day scoring for the Seminole women with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters. The junior ran at the front throughout the 25-lap event and finished in 34:17.53, good for six points.

"Kellion - a freshman winner - that's real impressive," Braman added. "She's going to have a chance to win four of those things. She's not going to throw it shorter, she's only going to throw it further.

"Kayleigh Tyerman is a veteran and a 10k beast. She's in there running Catherine White, one of the top seeds in the country and an All-American in cross country, and she's on her like, `How do I win?' ... Chelsea Whalen has three good throws in the finals to move up and Stacey scores in first ACC meet."

Beyond the contested finals, the Seminoles also showed well in preliminary qualifying competition.

Junior Dentarius Locke, the top seed in the 200, advanced by winning his heat in a conservatively run time of 21.08. Freshman Zak Seddon, who will also compete in Saturday's steeplechase final, qualified for the 1500 finale by finishing second in his heat in 3:48.48.

Freshman Sage Watson led a trio of Seminole women who will move on to the finals of the 400-meter hurdles. Watson won her heat in 58.37 - the second-fastest time - while Marsha Ariol (1:01.57) and Sarah Chandler (1:01.88) advanced on time.

Sophomore Linden Hall rounded out the qualifiers with a wisely-run 1500 preliminary run of 4:24.81 out of the first and fastest heat.

"If you had given me these points and said I could skip today, I'd take it for sure," Braman said. "[The meet] is setting up pretty good. We have to keep knocking it out and, knock on wood, keep people healthy. It's a big, big, big day tomorrow."

Track 'Noles On Warpath.

FSU wins four of seven events Friday at ACC Championship meet.

April 19, 2013

RALEIGH, NC - With his teammates cheering wildly from the railing at the Paul H. Derr Track, Florida State freshman Zak Seddon put the exclamation point on a dynamic second-day performance by the Seminoles at the ACC Outdoor Championships meet on Friday.

Seddon sped past Clemson's Ty McCormack down the backstretch on the final lap and raced to victory in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Spurred on by his teammates, the Great Britain native won in 8:47.40, a full three seconds in front of McCormack, who led all but the final 250 meters.

The victory pulled the FSU men within two points of the team lead entering Saturday's finals. North Carolina leads with 59 points, followed by the `Noles (57), with defending champion Virginia Tech and Duke tied for third with 33.

Colleen Quigley had a decidedly different approach to her victory in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The sophomore led from the starting gun and ran away from the field in a career-best time of 10:01.95 to deliver the `Noles 10 more points and the team lead entering the final day of the meet.

The FSU women have 59 points, four more than second place NC State. North Carolina and Duke are tied for third with 36, while three-time defending champion Clemson is fifth with 29 points.

"We achieved everything that we wanted and the bonus was the PR's, the collegiate-bests, and the national and regional qualifying things that we did," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "It's exciting, both in what's happening at the championship, but even the residual benefit of what's happening down the road.

"Friday is moving day and you've got to get yourself in position [to win] or you just set yourself up in too tough a position for tomorrow. We didn't do that. We did a great job of qualifying."

Of the seven finals contested Friday - four for the men and three for the women - Florida State athletes scored four victories, including the two steeplechase wins. More impressively, the Seminoles piled up the points in style, setting one meet record and getting collegiate best marks from seven athletes in all.

There was a palpable momentum permeating both the men's and women's teams.

"I really felt that it is catching on from men to women and event to event," Braman said. "That's exciting."

Sophomore Stefan Brits endured four fouls in six long jump attempts, but his fifth leap of the day produced a mammoth winning mark of 8.05 meters (26-5), which broke a 16-year old ACC Championship meet mark. It also moved Brits into a share of the No. 2 spot on FSU's all-time list.

Junior Chelsea Whalen continued her amazing outdoor season in the shot put, claiming the ACC title with an opening throw of 16.33 meters (53-7), which improved her own school record set just last week at home. Whalen received plenty help from her teammates as sophomore Lakitta Johnson used a career-best throw of 14.99m (49-2.25) to claim sixth. Freshman Kellion Knibb was seventh as the trio combined for 15 points.

There were impressive performance s by Seminoles in events they didn't win. Junior transfer Stargell Williams unleashed a lifetime best shot put throw of 17.90m (58-8.75) to claim a second-place finish and the No. 9 mark in FSU history. Freshman Morne Moolman was the runner-up in the javelin (70.61m/231-8) and redshirt freshman Garrett Singletary claimed an eighth-place finish to provide the FSU men with nine points in the event.

On the women's side, freshmen Der'Renae Freeman (6.17m/20-3) and Maryke Brits (6.13/20-1.50), placed fifth and sixth, respectively, to contribute seven points to the title chase cause. Neither were seeded to score in the meet.

Freeman's leap also moved her into the No. 9 spot on the FSU career list.

"The impressive thing is that the first-timers have just had extraordinary performances," Braman said. "They haven't just handled the pressure, they've excelled under it, which is rare."

Beyond Friday's contested finals, the `Noles also held up well through the qualifying rounds, setting the stage for a potentially big final day.

Dentarius Locke posted the fastest time in the 100-meter qualifying, racing across the finish in a lifetime-best time of 10.08 seconds, which ranks No. 6 in FSU's illustrious sprint history. Senior David Ambler also advanced to the finals in a season-best mark of 10.52.

Junior Marecia Pemberton and first-year transfer Anne Zagre will compete in the women's 100 finals after racing home with season-best marks of 10.51 and 10.52 - the third and fourth-fastest of the day - from the same preliminary heat. Earlier in the day, Zagre advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best time of 13.12. She will be joined by Brits, who qualified on time in a career-best mark of 14.04.

Junior transfers James Harris (46.33) and Alonzo Russell (47.41) will represent the Seminoles in the finals of the 400-meter dash, as will Elizabeth Ichite (53.94) on the women's side. Harris and Ichite automatically qualified by winning their heats.

Senior Darrin Gibson recorded the fastest 800-meter qualifying time of the day, recording a season-best mark of 1:49.82. Tremaine Grant rode a season-best time of 14.14 into the finals of the 110-meter hurdles.

With momentum on their side, the FSU men and women will try and pull of their first ACC Championships team sweep on Sunday. That's no small feat considering the scoring potential back at home in Tallahassee.

"The assignment on both sides was large," Braman said. "We've tried to play it down, but we've got six All-Americans at home with injuries and things like that on the men's side, and a few prominent women as well. For us to come out and compete like it's Florida State, not Florida State minus six All-Americans. ... I really like what we've done, how we're doing it and how the kids are pulling for each other."

FSU Claims ACC Outdoor Title!

'Noles roll behind MVP Locke and supporting cast; women a close second.

April 20, 2013

RALEIGH, NC- The Florida State men's track & field team is returning to Tallahassee with the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championship trophy for the 10th time in 12 years.

Winning championships never gets old, but Seminoles' coach Bob Braman and staff may not have celebrated a sweeter conference title triumph than the one that played out Saturday at NC State's Paul H. Derr Track.

This one the Seminoles earned without the help of six All-American athletes back at home for a variety of reasons by dispatching defending champion Virginia Tech 149-138.

"That's what is most gratifying," Braman said. "They competed like they expected to win, and probably on paper coming in we should have been second. They got it done. We did feed off the momentum of the first two days. ... I really felt like we did as good as we possibly could have done. We had some big performances, which makes it gratifying because we would have not won this meet without a bunch of huge step-ups."

The only thing that could have made the sun-splashed day better was a matching trophy for the Florida State women. Thanks to a 1-2-3 sweep of the 5000-meter run, the Seminoles were deadlocked with three-time defending champion Clemson entering the final event. A fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay prevented the `Noles from duplicating their 2009 sweep, as they came up by a 151-146 count to the Tigers.

The outcome did not diminish the program's measurable progress. A year ago the Seminoles finished third, 110 points behind the Tigers. When Saturday's dust settled, FSU had made up 105 of those points with a squad that will return virtually everyone in 2014.

"For the women to rally and get that many points was just fantastic," Braman said. "We got beat by a ton last year. To come back and tie it up and have a chance to win in the 4x400...Can you imagine what was in the mind of the Clemson coaches?"

There was no shortage of highlights and major contributions from either team.

James Harris won the 400-meter dash in the nation's second-fastest time (45.25) and anchored the Seminoles' winning 4x100 relay. ACC Championship Track MVP Dentarius Locke won the 100 (10.12), finished second in the 200 (20.73) and also contributed to the winning 4x100 relay.

Those three victories were complemented by Darrin Gibson's momentum-swinging, runner-up finish in the 800 meters (1:49.11) and bronze medal performances from Andrew Lahaye (pole vault), Owen Cain (triple jump), Markindey Sineus (hammer) and Alonzo Russell (400).

In all, the Seminole men claimed seven titles and 15 All-ACC honors to lead all teams in both categories, which doesn't account for some pretty significant scoring performances on Saturday from the likes of: Zak Seddon (fourth, 1500), David Ambler (sixth, 100), Tremaine Grant (fourth, 110 hurdles), Harris and Cristobal Hurtado (fifth and seventh, high jump).

Fittingly, senior Mike Fout's sixth-place finish in the 5000 meters, on a cranky foot which had limited his training, secured the Seminoles' championship and allowed associate head coach Ken Harnden, who spent the day tabulating the team's title pursuit, to pull his 4x400 relay from the track.

"It's exciting to win and, dare I say, more exciting going forward," Braman said, after watching the men pile up a dozen or more NCAA East Preliminary marks over the three-day meet.

The Florida States women managed only one victory on the final day, but Amanda Winslow's 5000-meter triumph in 15:54.66 - and the silver and bronze performances of Colleen Quigley (15:58.90) and Kayleigh Tyerman (16:00.64) - spoke volumes about the team's resolve to win a title.

"The girls going 1-2-3 in the 5000 - because our women have been so dominant and so good - people took that a little bit for granted," Braman said. "It might have looked easy to the people in crowd when they pulled away with three laps to go, but that's 16 [minutes] flat for three athletes. That's a monster effort with two of them doubling back."

Quigley won the 3000-meter steeplechase on Friday, while Tyerman was third in Thursday's 10,000-meter final.

There was no shortage of podium performances from the Seminole women. Junior Elizabeth Ichite turned in a lifetime best run of 53.07 to place second in the 400, while freshman Sage Watson grabbed the silver in the 400-meter hurdles (58.50). Anne Zagre was third in the 100-meter hurdles (13.33) and Marecia Pemberton was third in the 100-meter dash (11.72). Der'Renae Freeman joined Pemberton, Zagre and Ichite on FSU's second-place 4x100 relay team (45.60).

The `Noles also picked up points key points from Linden Hall, who was fourth in the 1500 meters (4:23.41) and just .01 from the bronze medal. Zagre was fifth in the 100, while Sarah Chandler and Marsha Ariol finished fifth and sixth in the 400 hurdles. Briana Cherry-Bronson placed seventh in the hammer.

That collective effort, cheered on wildly by their raucous teammates, forced Clemson to stack its 4x400 relay team - which came into the meet with the nation's ninth-fastest time - to secure the title.

"That's amazing to make up that much ground [on Clemson] in one year, and look at all the young kids that are coming back," Braman said. "It's exciting where we're going to be in a year and hopefully they can become a national team.

"Next year we want it the other way around. We want to pull the women's team off the track in the 4x4."

Distance 'Noles Roll At Stanford.

Five new personal-best marks set at Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitaitonal.

PALO ALTO, CA - The Florida State men's and women's distance runners made the most of their weekend trip west with a host of personal-best marks Sunday night at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on the Stanford campus.

Of the eight Seminoles who lined up at Cobb Track & Angell Field, five recorded new personal best standards at what is annually one of the nation's finest meets for collegiate and professional distance runners.

"It was a great night," said Florida State women's distance coach Karen Harvey, who saw four of her five athletes post significant breakthroughs. "We came to Stanford with a lot of big goals. Every girl had a big goal. You're a little concerned coming off ACC's, with their energy and emotion, and finals coming up. Nothing fazed these girls."

Sophomore Colleen Quigley got the night going for the Seminoles. Competing in the fast section of the 3000-meter steeplechase, Quigley dropped a nine-second personal-best to place fourth in 9:52.19, earning a USA Championship standard in the process. Her breakthrough performance came just one week after she won the ACC Outdoor Championship steeplechase title in a then-best mark of 10:01.95 and followed up with a second-place finish in the 5000 in a lifetime-best 15:58.90.

"This is the most competitive, high-level race she has ever been in," Harvey said. It was tough for her and to come out with a huge PR and experience that will help her at the NCAA is really big...She really hasn't hit her stride yet. I think there are some pretty big things that are going to happen. This is just the beginning. Timing will be everything."

Not to be outdone, freshman Zak Seddon lowered his lifetime best in the 3000-meter steeplechase to 8:34.42. As one of only three collegiate runners in the fast heat, Seddon ran comfortably just off the lead pack throughout the race and came home in 11th place overall. One week after winning his first ACC title in the steeplechase, the Great Britain native whacked four seconds off his previous career best of 8:38.07 to post the second-fastest time in Division I this season.

"It was a fantastic race for the freshman," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "He handled himself well against the pros. Zak has a bright future."

Senior Amanda Winslow made the most of her first 1500-meter run of the season, lopping nearly three seconds off her all-time best en route to a seventh-place finish in 4:10.79. One of just five collegiate athletes in a stout field, Winslow ran with the front pack most of the way and came away with the third-fastest NCAA Division I time in the country this season.

Harvey was especially pleased with Winslow's performance, considering the NCAA Indoor Championships runner-up in the mile has yet to delve into serious speed work.

"She really did that off of strength and that's truly exciting," Harvey said. "She went out there and pounded all the way to the end. We talked about it being fast and it not going too soon. She ran smart and she ran 5k-tough. I'm really happy that she came through it healthy."

Freshman Georgia Peel placed 11th in 4:19.62, well off her season-best mark. Former Seminole Violah Lagat, who completed her collegiate eligibility in the fall, placed third with a career-best time of 4:09.17.

Sophomore Linden Hall, competing in section 2 of the 1500, posted her second PR of the season with a finish in 4:19.47.

"Linden didn't feel very good," Harvey said. "She just fought very hard. She didn't have a whole lot to fight for but she kept driving to the line and the reward was a PR."

Junior Kayleigh Tyerman, who finished third in both the 10,000 and 5000 last week at the ACC Championship meet, enjoyed arguably her finest track performance in two seasons with the Seminoles. Cheered on by her family, the Oregon native crashed the 16-minute barrier for the first time in the 5000, placing third in 15:49.07. The mark vaulted her from fourth to second on FSU's all-time list for the distance; just seven seconds off the 10-year-old school record set by Vicky Gill.

"Oh, my gosh," Harvey said. "Talk about nine days of awesomeness. I was the most worried about Kayleigh [coming back from ACC]. `How do you do that?' I'm so happy for her."

Senior Breandan O Neill wasn't quite as fortunate. After successfully defending his ACC 10,000-meter title last week, the standout from Ireland couldn't muster a late surge in section 2 of the 5000, yet still managed a 13:58.99. That should safely secure O Neill a spot in the NCAA East Preliminary meet, should he choose to go that route.

Senior Mike Fout, who has his sights set on a third consecutive NCAA Championship appearance at 10,000 meters, made his debut at that distance in the final race of the night for the Seminoles. With the goal simply to post a time strong enough to secure one of 48 spots in the NCAA East Preliminary field, Fout more than handled his business.

Fout's time of 28:52.77 was good enough to place fifth overall - first among collegians - but more importantly, moved him to No. 1 in the NCAA East rankings.

Twilight Highlights.

Whalen sets two PR's; Knibb, Locke climb into top 10 nationally.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Combining for nine victories, four career-best marks and a handful of season-best standards, the Florida State men's and women's track & field teams made the most of Friday's Seminole Twilight Invitational at Mike Long Track.

"In less than ideal conditions we competed hard and made some progress," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "Everybody's excited. Both teams will be competing next weekend to put a stamp on their national rankings in the last-chance qualifying weekend."

Between intermittent showers and breezy conditions, the Seminoles had plenty to be happy about after the third and final home meet of the season.

Junior Chelsea Whalen came away as the top performer of the meet, registering a pair of new career-best standards. Whalen got things going in the javelin, bettering her 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championship finalist mark with a throw of 48.06 meters (157-8). While the throw was only good for third place, it vaulted the Whalen to No. 14 in the NCAA East Preliminary rankings and No. 30 on the NCAA list.

Whalen wasn't through. She continued to build on her record-setting season in the shot put with another career-best, pushing her school record to 16.35m (53-7.75) on the way to victory.

Like Whalen in the javelin, freshman Kellion Knibb was unable to convert her new personal-best in the discus into a victory. Still, the Jamaican native eclipsed 180 feet for the first time in her career with a throw of 54.88m (180-1), and climbed to No. 10 on the NCAA national list.

Redshirt freshman Karly Jackson recorded the first victory of her collegiate career, capturing the pole vault with a new career-best mark of 3.81 meters (12-6). The winning vault was good for a 17-place improvement to 59th in her chase to attain one of the 48 NCAA East Preliminary meet qualifying spots.

Junior sprinter Dentarius Locke continued his impressive first season with the Seminoles. Buoyed by a strong start out of the blocks, Locke blazed his way to victory in the 200-meter dash in a season-best time of 20.63. That standard moved the Tampa native to No. 4 in the East and No. 10 in the NCAA this season.

Another junior, Anne Zagre, doubled up to win the 100-meter hurdles in 13.40 and the 200 in 24.09, which is the fastest half-lap mark by a Seminole this season. Tremaine Grant won the 110-meter hurdles (14.27) and Darrin Gibson captured the 800 (1:50.63) in the final home meet of their careers.

Freshmen Sage Watson and Stacey Drilling won the 400-meter hurdles (59.79) and high jump (1.56m/5-1.75), respectively, to round out the Seminole triumphs.

Strong second-place performances were also turned in by junior transfers Stargell Williams and Alonzo Russell. Williams was the runner-up in the shot put, narrowly missing a personal-best with a throw of 17.89m (58-8.50), while Russell finished second in the 400 (46.88). Elizabeth Ichite was also a runner-up in the 200 (24.48), which was just off her season-best.

"It was the ideal weekend to be at home because we had final exams and it's the last week of the season where you can really train for the end of the season and not the end of the week," Braman said. "It was definitely a good weekend not to travel."

Knibb Sets School Record.

Track 'Noles close regular season with a host of highlights.

ATLANTA, GA and CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Kellion Knibb set a new Florida State school record in the discus Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational, highlighting a string of solid performances by the Seminoles.

The final day for establishing postseason qualifying marks proved quite productive for the Seminoles, who competed at both the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Virginia Challenge.

"Now we're into postseason and are excited to see what our squad looks like going to Greensboro," said FSU head coach Bob Braman, who will learn early next week exactly how many Seminoles will advance to the NCAA East Preliminary meet.

Knibb got things going early on, unleashing a career-best throw of 55.68 meters (182-8) on her fourth attempt of the competition in Atlanta. The freshman from Jamaica broke the 10-year school standard, set by Makiba Batten (55.22m/181-2) in 2003 and was nearly 25-feet clear of her nearest competitor with her winning throw.

Knibb will head into the East Preliminary at North Carolina A&T ranked No. 3 after posting the nation's sixth-best throw of the season.

The Seminoles turned in several other season-best marks at the George C. Griffin Track complex. Senior Darrin Gibson secured his place at the NCAA East Preliminary meet with a season-best run of 1:49.03 in the 800, which was good for fourth place.

Freshman Hannah Actonhelped her cause in the pole vault, placing second with a season-best clearance of 3.92 meters (12-10.25). In search for one of 48 qualifying spots in the first round of NCAA competition, Acton moved into a tie for 33rd.

One of the most encouraging performances of the weekend was turned in by the men's 4x100 relay team of David Ambler, Dentarius Locke, Stefan Brits and James Harris. Running together for just the second time this season, the quartet moved the baton around the track in a season-best time of 39.32. Not only was is good enough for the victory, it moved the `Noles from 10th to fifth overall in NCAA Division I this season.

Locke and Harris also produced individual victories on Saturday, in the 100 (10.20) and high jump (2.14m/7-0.25), respectively. Jeff Pelage got back on track in the discus with a second-place finish in 54.50m (178-10).

The women's 4x400 relay team of Sage Watson, Elizabeth Ichite, Sarah Chandler and Marsha Ariolfinished second with their second-fastest time of the season (3:39.46).

"The group didn't come here to try and qualify," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "We came here continuing to work. I thought we had a pretty good day."

In Charlottesville, the Seminole men and women's distance runners took a similar approach in the face of stout competition. FSU runners came away with four new career-best performances and some solid work with the postseason serving as a point of emphasis.

Senior Amanda Winslow finished fourth in both the 800 (2:08.61) and 1500 (4:14.26). Three of her teammates - Linden Hall, Colleen Quigley and Kayleigh Tyerman - each came away with new personal-best marks.

Hall placed eighth in the 800 in 2:09.28, while Quigley was ninth in the 1500 in 4:15.05. Tyerman placed 16th in the 1500 but her 4:22.58 was also a personal-best.

On the men's side, freshman Zak Seddon checked in with a new personal-best in the 1500, finishing in 3:45.47.

Graduate student Seth Proctor led a group of five Seminoles, each chasing a qualifying mark in the 10,000-meter run, with a sixth-place finish in a season-best 29:55.87.

Senior Jennifer Dunn put a proper cap on the evening for the Seminoles, winning the women's 10,000 in 35:03.72.

"I thought the women's distance team had a really good night, particularly Linden Hall, Colleen Quigley, Kayleigh Tyerman, and of course, Amanda Winslow," Braman said. "Then in the last race of the night, senior Jennifer Dunn made a heckuva run at a qualifying mark in the 10,000. She certainly deserves to make it."

Five Seminoles secured NCAA Championship berths on opening day.

May 24, 2013

GREENSBORO, NC- The Florida State track & field teams finished strong on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary round, qualifying five athletes to the NCAA Championship meet and moving a solid group on to quarterfinal round action.

The Seminoles' distance runners came through in a big way to close the competition. Junior Kayleigh Tyerman and senior Michael Fout closed out the night with second-place finishes in the women's and men's 10,000-meter races, respectively. They will be joined in Eugene, Ore. for the June by senior Breandan O Neill, who placed 10th.

Tyerman, an Oregon native, posted the second-fastest time in Florida State history. She ran with the lead pack for the entire race and surged into the lead with two laps remaining before coming home second in 33:20.74.

Fout and O Neill found themselves in a completely different race as the race began in a downpour, which lent to a slow early pace. Fout moved toward the front early and stayed there on the way to his third consecutive NCAA Championships appearance in 29:54.22. O Neill worked his way through the pack to secure his first trip to the championship meet in 30:01.28.

Two other veterans, senior pole vaulter Andrew LaHaye and sophomore long jumper Stefan Brits, are headed back to the championship meet for a second consecutive year. LaHaye needed a third attempt to get over an early bar, but nailed his final two heights to earn a share of eighth place (5.25m/17-2.75). Brits placed sixth with a series-best effort of 7.56 meters (24-9.75).

"I'm just happy enough," Florida State coach Bob Braman said at the end of a long opening day at the Irwin Bell Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. "We had a good day. The men did a good job. The rookies, particularly on the women's side, had a rough time."

Though there were a handful of disappointments, most of the favored Seminoles moved on to the quarterfinal rounds.

Dentarius Locke eased his way through the opening round of the 100-meter dash with a third-place heat finish in 10.38. Fellow sprinters James Harris and Alonzo Russell were a bit more convincing in the 400-meter dash. Harris, the top seed, won his heat in 45.56 - the third-fastest time of the day - while Russell moved on by virtue of his third-place finish in 46.36.

Senior Darrin Gibsonadvanced on time in the 800 with his fourth-place heat finish in 1:50.14.

Not surprisingly, the Florida State women's distance group more than held its own through the first round as the trio of Amanda Winslow, Linden Hall and Georgia Peel moved on to Saturday's quarterfinal round of the 1500. Peel, a freshman, qualified with a second-place finish in a tactical first heat race in 4:24.68, while Winslow secured her spot with a third-place finish in the second heat in 4:19.41. Hall was the beneficiary of the swift second heat pace and advanced on time (4:19.70) after placing sixth.

"Coach Harvey's girls ran really well," Braman said. "It was a great job for her entire group."

Freshman Sage Watson turned also moved along from the first round in the 400 hurdles, placing second in her heat from lane one in 58.21.

The Seminoles will be quite busy when action resumes Friday. Morne Moolman (men's javelin), Hannah Acton (women's pole vault) and Stargell Williams (men's shot put) will try and punch tickets to the championship in the field events.

On the track, steeplechase standouts Colleen Quigley and Zak Seddon, will try and secure top-12 finishes and trips to the Oregon.

Among those returning to the track for quarterfinal action will be Harris and Russell (400), Locke (100), Gibson (800) and Watson (400 hurdles).

Anne Zagre and Tremaine Grant will compete in the opening round of the 100- and 110-meter hurdles, respectively.

Track 'Noles Add To NCAA Count.

Moolman, Quigley lead way for six more championship qualifiers.

May 25, 2013

GREENSBORO, NC- The Florida State men's and women's track & field teams combined for six more NCAA Championship meet qualifiers Friday, pushing its two-day total to 11 at the East Preliminary meet.

"If we can compete like this tomorrow [Saturday], we're going to fill up that plane and have a really good national championship meet," Florida State coach Bob Braman said, at the end of the day.

The Seminoles received dominant performances from freshman Morne Moolman and sophomore Colleen Quigley, who posted the top marks in the javelin and 3000-meter steeplechase, respectively, as the starting fields of 48 were pared to 12.

One throw away from failing to reach the finals, Moolman unleashed a meet-best throw of 75.17 meters (246-7) to easily outdistance the rest of the field. The South Africa native also improved on his Florida State school record mark, set initially at the Texas Relays in April, and will enter the June 5-8 championship meet at Oregon with the seventh-best throw in the country this year.

"This is kind of a strange meet because it's a qualifying round," FSU Director of Field Events Dennis Nobles said. "If you've never done it before it's kind of hard to come to a meet and try to not win; you just try to finish in the top 12. I think that messes with a few people who have never been here before.

"Being a freshmen, [Moolman] showed an awful lot of maturity. ... On his third throw, he knew he basically had to do it and he did. He came down the runway under control, put his foot down nicely and didn't even lay out. I'm really happy with the effort and the outcome. It just goes to show how much talent the young man really does have."

While Moolman's performance came in the opening event of the day at the Irwin Bell Track on the North Carolina A&T campus, Quigley helped close out the night. Running at the front from the gun, the 2012 All-American ran away from the first heat field, winning in a personal-best time of 9:49.44, which is off the school record held by 2012 Olympian Barbara Parker (9:48.42).

"I wasn't training through this," said Quigley. "I was peaking for this so I was ready for a hard effort and a PR. It felt surprisingly easy. ... It's just kind of fun to see how fast I can run by myself and I know I can go faster if I had people to push me."

Four other Seminoles secured trips to Eugene, Ore., including junior Dentarius Locke, who won his 100-meter dash heat in 10.05. It was not only the second-fastest time of the quarterfinal round - the fastest in legal wind conditions - but an all-time best that moved him to No. 5 on FSU's all-time list.

It is also the 10th-fastest time in the world in 2013 - the fifth-fastest by an American - and ranks third among collegians.

Top-seeded junior James Harris continued his impressive first season with the Seminoles by easily qualifying for the NCAA Championship meet with his first heat win in the 400-meter dash (46.15).

Beyond the most veteran Seminoles, two freshmen also made their mark on the second of three days of competition. Sage Watson nailed down her first NCAA Outdoor Championship trip by storming the homestretch to finish third and grab the last qualifying spot in her heat of the 400 hurdles in 58.40.

"I'm really, really happy for the freshman Sage Watson," Braman said. "Her effort was supreme. Her hurdling was off, so it was a gut-check for her. She was in fourth place - three were going to go [to nationals] - and she guts it out down the straight-away. A freshman going to nationals - that's pretty special."

Fellow first-year `Nole Zak Seddon pulled the curtain on Friday night's competition in the men's steeplechase, leaving Georgetown's Max Darrah behind at the water jump on the final lap to win the third and final heat in 8:43.65.

"I've had a lot of experience over barriers and that helps; also a lot of strength work coach has given me," Seddon said. "When it comes to the last 200 I know I can finish well. I'm pleased with the time because I ran my fastest ever last kilometer (2:46); I won my heat so I'm going to nationals.

"It's going to be good fun."

In addition to the NCAA-bound performance, Locke advance to the Saturday quarterfinal round in the 200-meter dash on time (20.95) and junior Anne Zagre reeled in the field to move on in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.24.

Beyond the NCAA qualifiers, freshman Hannah Acton narrowly missed joining the Eugene-bound group after posting her collegiate-best mark in the pole vault (4.00m/13-1.50); good for a share of 18th place.

"She equaled her PR and was in the competition," Nobles said of Acton. "For a freshman to come to this meet and be in the competition speaks volumes for what the future holds. I'm really excited to be moving on toward next year."

The Seminoles will close out the meet with a busy day Saturday, which will begin with the men's 4x100 relay on the track and a trio of FSU women - Amanda Winslow, Georgia Peel and Linden Hall - chasing national berths in the 1500.

School shot put record-holder Chelsea Whalen will compete in her specialty as well as the javelin, while Harris will try and add to his NCAA event count in the high jump as well.

'Noles Run Up NCAA Count.

Whalen leads final day charge as track qualifies 17 for championship meet.

May 25, 2013

GREENSBORO, NC- The Florida State track & field teams will travel 17 athletes to the NCAA Championships after strong finish to Saturday's East Preliminary meet at Irwin Bell Track on the North Carolina A&T campus.

The Seminoles qualified in five more events on the final day of competition.

Junior Chelsea Whalen led the charge, qualifying for the June 5-8 trip to Eugene, Ore. in both the javelin and the shot put in events that ran virtually one right after the other. Whalen qualified sixth overall in the javelin with a new personal-best throw of 49.40 meters (162-1). She followed up in the shot put as the No. 5 qualifier with a throw of 16.26m (53-4.25).

"It felt really good," said Whalen, who will be making her second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance after placing 12th in the javelin last year. "Going into today I felt confident in both [events]. Going into the javelin I was going to go in there to have fun and just do what I came here to do. That worked for me. Then I just had to sit back and refocus for shot put and just get my mind right and trust my technique. That's what I did."

"Chelsea was a beast," FSU head coach Bob Braman said of Whalen, who has reached the ultimate destination after a record-setting season.

"I've actually gained a lot confidence this year with my performances," Whalen added. "The deciding factor is I think I've grown more mature and more understanding. If I have a bad day I don't go cry in a corner. I take it as a lesson."

The entire day was a lesson in perseverance for the Seminoles, who overcame slow starts, injuries and keen competition with sheer determination.

"We competed really well," Braman said.

Junior Anne Zagre overcame a poor start out of the blocks in the 100-meter hurdles with a powerful finish and a season-best time of 13.09 seconds, which moved her into a tie for second on FSU's all-time list. The 2012 Olympian from Belgium secured her spot automatically with a second-place heat finish to Clemson's Kendra Harrison.

"I don't think I've ever seen a worse start in the whole time she's been at Florida State," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "She didn't panic. She handled it well and came on late. If we can just get a consistent start she is going something to deal with. I was very happy for her."

Harnden, who oversees the sprinters, hurdlers and relay teams, didn't know what to expect from a men's 4x100 relay team that was dealing with a variety of ailments and was being held together with "band-aids, duct tape and masking tape."

"How we got through I don't really know," Harnden said. "They did exactly what we asked them to. We said, `get the stick around the track and it's going to take 39-anything to go,' and they did a good job."

The quartet of David Ambler, Dentarius Locke, Stefan Brits and James Harris ran 39.58 - the third-fastest time of the day - and secured a trip by placing second in its heat.

Florida State's women's distance team did its part as well as senior Amanda Winslow and sophomore Linden Hall advanced to the championship from the 1500 meter quarterfinals, by placing fourth in their respective heats.

Winslow, who came into the meet with ranked third nationally, ran at the front most of the way and made a bold move for the lead going into the final lap in an attempt to keep the race honest.

"I knew there was a chance that even by making a move, they would be able to match it and still be right there and it would take a little bit out of me," said Winslow, who grabbed the fourth of five automatic berths by finishing in 4:16.29. "At the same time, I wanted to make it a real race - a real 1500 race, not a 50-meter race. It was better to take that chance to take the lead than sit back and have to make up ground. That hasn't worked for me in the past.

"All that matters is the end of NCAA's. ... I was really just trying to secure the top five."

One heat later, Hall completed a season-long comeback from a broken foot suffered during cross country season, with a heady approach to a tactical race that went out slow but finished with her running 2:11 over the final 800 meters.

"In my first race at USF I ran 4:41 and I didn't think I'd even get to run ACC's at that point," said Hall, who was fourth in heat two (4:19.55). "To make nationals? It hasn't really hit me yet.

"To be honest the whole race is a bit of a blur. I wanted to make sure I was in a good spot to go when it kicked down, and looking at the splits, we really kicked it down the last two laps."

"This has just been an incredible breakthrough season for her; a comeback season," Winslow said of Hall. "I'm just super proud of her. It was really inspiring because this meet can't be taken lightly. What she has accomplished is a really big thing."

The final individual qualifier Saturday was Harris, who tied for eighth with a leap of 2.14m (7-0.25).

Beyond the national qualifiers, sophomore Markindey Sineus and junior Owen Cain provided some drama in the hammer and triple jump. Sineus, who came into the meet as the No. 46 seed, unleashed a lifetime best throw of 60.47m (199-4) to reach the finals and ultimately finished one spot out from a trip to Eugene. His throw is the third-best in Seminole history.

Cain also reached the finals in the triple jump with a first flight mark of 15.23m (49-11.75); an impressive feat considering he was seeded 37th. He finished two spots away from an NCAA trip.

"We had another great day, absolutely," Braman said. "I look at things that everybody may not see, but Markindey - that was amazing. For what he's gone through this year, [to throw] a 2.50 meter lifetime best and finish 13th? Afterward I gave him hug and he wasn't in a conciliatory mood. He was mad. I love that. ... Owen Cain nearly had a lifetime best and gave himself a shot."

With two weeks to prepare, Braman has every reason to believe the Seminoles will put together a strong showing on the final stage.

"We didn't really lose any national scorers," he said. "I thought we had a really good meet."

Sprinters Take Charge.

Harris, Locke sizzle on opening day at NCAA Championships.

June 6, 2013

EUGENE, OR - The Florida State track & field teams enjoyed some incredible early highs off-set by a few heart-wrenching lows late on the opening day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Oregon's historic Hayward Field.

Sprinters James Harris and Dentarius Locke advanced to the finals in the 400 and 100, respectively, with career-best marks. They also teamed with Alonzo Russell and Stefan Brits to secure a spot in the 4x100 relay finals with a season-best performance.

"It was a pretty typical Florida State national meet, where we come in here really aggressive like we talked about yesterday," Florida State coach Bob Braman said. "We set the tone and did a great, great job with the 4x100, then 400 and the 100. Those two guys were really special."

The Seminoles' relay team got the day going, despite some less-than-efficient baton handling, getting around the track in a season-best 39.14. Harris played no small role as the `Noles grabbed an automatic qualifying spot for the final, moving from fourth to second on the anchor leg of the third heat.

"Get to the next race - that was the inspiration to run faster," Harris said, when what was going through his mind when he took the baton from Brits in fourth place. "Nobody expected a 400 runner and high jumper to walk down Arkansas and nearly LSU in the 4x100. ... That was the perfect prep for the 400 for me. When I heard the crowd getting loud, it was one of the best feelings ever."

The fifth-fastest time of the day among relay teams, despite a lineup change as Russell was inserted into the leadoff leg for the first time this season.

Harris didn't have much time to recover from his heroic anchor effort. The junior transfer from Mississippi State was on deck in the first heat of the 400-meter semifinals. Similar to his late surge on the relay, Harris powered off the final turn and up the homestretch to grab the second place automatic qualifying spot in a career-best 45.23. George Mason's David Verburg won the heat in 45.19.

Those were the two fastest times on a spectacular, albeit, breezy opening day.

"I got out way slower than I planned to and when I came off the curve it was make-or-break time," Harris said. "I just put it all out there on the track and came through with a PR time. Knowing I could have run faster, I'm just excited to see what happens on Friday."

Locke kept the momentum going by winning the first heat of the 100-meter semifinal in 9.97; the fastest legal time by a collegian this season and tied for the fourth-fastest time in the World in 2013. It is also tied for the eighth-fastest time in NCAA history. Bursting from the blocks, the redshirt junior ran away from the field in the acceleration phase, outdistancing runner-up Aaron Brown from USC (10.05).

It was a monumental breakthrough for the Tampa native, who was making his first NCAA Outdoor Championship appearance since 2011 when he ran at Tennessee. Locke came into the race with a career-best of 10.05 set at the NCAA East Preliminary meet, and his breakthrough moved him to No. 4 on FSU's all-time list behind NCAA record-holder Ngoni Makusha (9.89), Walter Dix (9.91) and Kemar Hyman (9.95).

"I'm blessed," said Locke, who was forced to sit out last season after transferring. "It's been a long three or four years. It's a dream come true to me. When the time came up and it was 9.97, I was like, `Oh, Lord, tell me it was legal.' It was 1.9 (wind) - barely legal - and it was a blessing. ...

"It hasn't felt this good since high school."

Harris and Locke will compete in the finals of their respective events on Friday, while the 4x100 relay will get Saturday's final day of competition started.

"They both ran great legs on the 4x100," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "We didn't have very good exchanges. James went to sleep in the first 150 meters, but made up for it and ran really good coming home. Locke absolutely executed a race today and did what he was meant to do and got the reward. It was an unbelievable day."

Several other Seminoles saw their collegiate seasons come to a close Wednesday. Senior Andrew LaHaye cleared his first two heights in the pole vault but finished tied for 15th with his last clearance (5.25m/17-2.75). Junior Chelsea Whalen finished 13th in the javelin (47.74m/156-7) but will be back in action Saturday in the shot put. Freshman Sage Watson placed 12th in the 400 hurdles (58.71).

Freshman Zak Seddon came into the meet with the nation's second-fastest time in the steeplechase this season. The Great Britain native was running at the front in a pack of three when he lost his footing and took a head-first dive into the water jump with just under 1,000 meters to go. Seddon finished in 9:14.92 to place 22nd.

Junior Kayleigh Tyerman placed 19th in the 10,000 meters (35:06.75).

Among the Seminoles set to compete Thursday are sophomore and No. 3 seed Stefan Brits in the long jump, sophomore and No. 2 seed Colleen Quigley in the steeplechase, junior Anne Zagre in the 100-meter hurdle and seniors Mike Fout and Breandan O Neill in the 10,000. They are joined by women's 1500 semifinalists Amanda Winslow, a senior with the nation's third-fastest time, and sophomore Linden Hall.

"We've got to pick back up tomorrow, make up some points if we can and compete like we've been competing," Braman said.

Fout Delivers First Points.

Seminole distance runners shine on Day 2 at NCAA Championships.

June 7, 2013

EUGENE, OR - Thursday belonged to the Florida State distance runners at the NCAA Championship, with senior Mike Fout providing the Seminoles with their first points of the meet for the men with his fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters.

Running his final race as a Seminole, Fout stayed with the lead pack throughout the 25-lap test of physical and mental endurance at Hayward Field, determined not to be denied a place on the podium. While Arizona's Lawi Lalang ran away with the win, Fout put himself in the thick of a late-race shuffle for the next four spots, which were separated by just over one full second.

"I'm proud of my team, I'm proud of the way I ran today and I'm proud to wear that Seminole singlet one last time," Fout said, afterward. "It was 25 laps and it was very hard, but this kind of defines who we are and hopefully how I've run the last five years at FSU.

Fout finished in 29:42.23 in his third consecutive NCAA Championship 10,000 appearance and scored the first points by a Seminole distance runner at the meet since 2008. He matched Herb Wills' fourth-place NCAA finish in 1980 for the best by a Seminole in school history at the distance.

"It's not my fastest time, by any means," Fout said. "It's not first, but at the end of the day, to come out here and compete - just hang tough in a very difficult race - and to do it for the Seminoles, I just wanted to run tough."

"We needed that, and the way Mike did it - competing for second place and fighting the way he did fearlessly for a giant score for our team - I was real proud," Florida State head coach Bob Braman said. "We are on the board. Maybe we can get a little momentum going for the guys."

Senior Breandan O Neill placed ninth (29:53.25), one spot out of scoring with a strong closing lap.

Fout's scoring performance was not the only highlight from the distance crew. Sophomore Linden Hall and senior Amanda Winslow advanced to the finals of the 1500-meter run and sophomore Colleen Quigley advanced from the 3000-meter steeplechase semifinals. All three will compete in Saturday's finals.

Hall provided the biggest surprise of the day, earning a spot in the finals on time in the 1500 (4:15.51) after placing sixth in the first heat. Her four-second, personal-best came despite a serious bout of nerves.

"This is the first time I've ever run in and anything this big and I was kind of terrified the whole race," said Hall, who suffered a broken foot during cross country season and did not begin track workouts until February. "I was waiting for it to go (faster) and a little edgy the whole time. ...

"It's awesome. I was stoked to be here. I was ranked 23rd. I guess whatever happens on the day. I definitely knew I could run faster than I had run. My workouts have been really good the last couple of weeks and I'm happy with where I am."

Winslow took a different approach in the second heat, moving to the front early and setting the pace. She qualified automatically with a second-place finish in 4:16.59.

"I ended up leading a lot more than the plan was," Winslow said. "It's kind of funny, we had these little cards that the girls made us from an elementary school and mine said, `Set the pace.' Maybe that was what was meant to be. I set the pace and it ended up being just slow enough for Linden to sneak in. I'm pretty happy."

FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey, who will have two women in the 1500 final for the second consecutive year, was elated with the performances of Hall and Winslow.

"She was poised," Harvey said of Hall. "She was on the inside of the track with nowhere to go but did not panic. She's on the biggest stage of her life, not in good position for at least two laps, and her wind-up - which is what we've been practicing - was exactly what got her into the final. It was that last 100 and 50-meter push."

Harvey was pleased to see how Winslow handled challenges for the lead throughout the early stages of the race, which could serve her well in Saturday's final.

"I'm really excited about her for Saturday," Harvey said. "We took a little break after regionals and I believe it's going to come in her favor. She's just got to be ready on Saturday to run the hardest 1500 of her career."

Quigley cruised to an automatic spot in the finals with a second-place finish in heat two (10:00.23), which was fourth-fastest on the day, and just behind heat winner Amber Henry (9:58.82) of Weber State.

"She had lots of composure," Harvey said. "The composure today was good to see, because the last 800 meters on Saturday, she will not have time to be composed."

Junior Anne Zagre came within .02 seconds of advancing to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, but her consolation prize was a new school record. Zagre (13.01) finished fourth in the third heat, which produced the collegiate record by Clemson's Brianna Rollins (12.47). Her performance smashed the record held by former Olympian Kim Batten (13.06) since 1991.

Stefan Brits was unable to match his sixth-place NCAA Indoor Championship finish in the long jump as he managed a best of only 7.65m (25-1.25).

The Seminoles' Friday schedule is less hectic, but no less more important.

Dentarius Locke will attempt to and back up the fastest collegiate 100-meter time in the country this season (9.97), set in the semifinal round, in the finals at 8:10 p.m. (ET). James Harris will pull a double-shift, competing in the high jump (6:20 p.m.) and the 400-meter dash finals (9:05 p.m.). Harris had the second-fastest qualifying time in Wednesday's 400 semifinal round (45.23).

"Sprints has been our bellcow and it's time for us to get in there and help out and we did that," said Braman, who heads up the men's distance runners. "I think we're going to get points in the javelin, in the high jump and then we're going to get our traditional sprint points. Maybe we can chase a podium (finish). That's what we're here for."

A Shot Of Locke & Harris.

Tandem propels Seminole men to fourth at NCAA Championships.

June 7, 2013

EUGENE, OR - Dentarius Locke and James Harris combined for 16.5 points Friday, propelling the Florida State men's track & field team into fourth place entering Saturday's finale at the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet.

Finishing second in the 100-meter finals, Locke's wind-aided 9.91 seconds was just a lean shy of TCU's Charles Silmon (9.89) in one of the swiftest full-field finals in recent years.

Harris' two-event performance was nothing less than amazing. Within minutes of finishing in a tie for fourth in the high jump (2.24m/7-4.25), the junior summoned up a fifth-place finish in the 400-meter finals in 45.56.

With 21.5 points, the Seminole men enter the final day trailing co-leaders USC and Texas (32 points) and Arkansas (30.5), with Texas A&M (21), UCLA and Oregon (18) and LSU (17) in close pursuit.

FSU's goal of claiming an eighth podium finish in nine years - placing among the top four teams - will rest on the scoring production of the men's 4x100 relay and freshman javelin thrower Morne Moolman at historic Hayward Field.

"We've got a chance at a trophy and that's always the goal coming here," Florida State coach Bob Braman. "I'm not sure I would have put odds on us do that coming in here."

Braman's Florida State women's team has yet to register a point, but that should change Saturday.

Senior Amanda Winslow and sophomore Linden Hall will try and extend the Seminoles' streak of seven consecutive years with a scorer in the 1500-meter final. Sophomore Colleen Quigley enters the steeplechase final with the nation's second-fastest time this year, while junior Chelsea Whalen will try and put an exclamation point on her record-setting season in the shot put.

"The entire women's team score comes from our four athletes," Braman said. "They are going to write their own script in about a two-hour period and hopefully deliver a top 20 or top 15 finish.

"We've got a lot of work to do."

As work days go, Friday was quite productive.

With Harris already competing in the early stages of the high jump, Locke climbed into the blocks for his first 100-meter final. After posting the fastest legal time by a collegian in Wednesday's semifinal (9.97), Locke was ready to measure himself against Silmon, who ran a wind-aided 9.92.

"I felt pretty good," Locke said, recounting the race. "Everything went as planned. I got out like I was supposed to. I stayed patient throughout my drive phase. When I came up he [Silmon] was in striking distance. I believe I actually pulled even with him. Getting to the tape, he leaned just a little bit before me and that gave him the win."

"That was fantastic," Braman said. "In the first 100-meter final of his career, with the collegiate best legal time, he had a big bulls-eye on him and ran an incredible race under a lot of pressure.

"I'm sure Locke running that well will inspire us tomorrow and obviously it inspired James Harris."

Watching from the high jump pad, where he had already put himself in scoring position, Harris saluted Locke then proceeded to clear 2.24 meters on his third and final attempt. He bowed out after three solid attempts at 2.28 meters (7-5.75).

Still, his work was far from over, with the 400 final looming.

"It was tough but I believe that's what made me do so good in both events," Harris said. "The whole time I was high jumping I was thinking about the 400. When I got over the 7-4 bar I was like, `I'm here for a reason so I might as well keep hacking it out in the high jump.' When I got to the 400, I said, `I might as well just leave it all on the track.' I gave it all I had. It's my first time finding myself in the finals, so I was happy."

With little in reserve after the high jump, Harris fought through the final curve, picking off one runner to place fifth.

"That's one of the most incredible things I've seen in collegiate track and field," Braman said of Harris' double. "The 400 is already a brutal event at this level in this country. Then he gets three good looks at 7-6 after three hours out there in 80 degree sun and walks over to the 400 and turns in an incredibly respectable time."

Harris, a transfer from Mississippi State, was hardly disappointed.

"Last year I didn't make nationals in any of my individual events," he said. "Now I find myself a two-time All-American in individual events in a matter of 30 minutes. It feels real good."

Friday's scoring combo of Locke and Harris aren't through. They will kick things off Saturday at Hayward Field as members of FSU's fifth-seeded 4x100 relay.

"We're going to drop the chop in the 4x1 tomorrow."

Quigley Provides Defining Moment.

Sophomore's steeple silver highlight final day at NCAA Championships.

June 8, 2013

EUGENE, OR - With a blistering final 500 meters, sophomore Colleen Quigley provided the Florida State track & field program with a signature moment, grabbing the silver medal in the steeplechase on the final day of the NCAA Championship meet at Oregon's historic Hayward Field.

On a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon, Quigley broke away from Weber State's Amber Henry on the penultimate lap of the 3000-meter race, sailing to the eighth-fastest time (9:38.23) in NCAA history. Despite finishing three seconds behind two-time champion and 2012 Olympian Emma Coburn of Colorado, Quigley used an 11-second personal best to earn an IAAF World Championship A-standard.

"There was no doubt about Colleen Quigley," Florida State coach Bob Braman said, rattling off a list of great Seminole performers she compared favorably with. "That's special."

Executing her race plan, Quigley stalked Henry for most of the race before pulling away with a 71-second final lap. In the process, she smashed the Florida State record held by Barbara Parker, another 2012 Olympian, by 10 seconds.

Only former Colorado star Jenny Barringer ran faster as a collegiate sophomore than Quigley, who turned in the No. 22 time in the world; No. 4 in the United States.

"I didn't expect it to be easy and it was not easy," Quigley said. "I was hurting. I was just trying to stick on Amber and not let her gap me too much. ... I could tell she was hurting too. I was having some definite self-doubt. With 500 to go, that was my spot. I decided with coach [Karen Harvey] that's where I needed to make my move.

"By the time I got to the barrier after the finish line (with one lap remaining), I went around her and felt like, `I've got her now. I feel terrible, but she feels worse.' I had another gear in me."

Quigley's performance was far and away the highlight on a day marred by Stefan Brits' hamstring injury during the 4x100 relay, forcing the Seminole men to settle for eighth place and their lone point of the day.

The Seminole men finished ninth with 23.5 points, while the women tied for 29th with nine points.

Senior Amanda Winslow provided the Seminole women with their only other All-American performance, placing eighth in the 1500-meter final. Winslow led until the final 200 meters, fading against a furious pack of kickers who were stalking her throughout.

"When I found myself in the lead I didn't want back off," said Winslow, who finished in 4:16.00. "I wanted to push myself, push the pack and see what happened.

"It was very similar to last year. A lot of races at this level are just like that. No one wants to lead. No one wants to do the work. That's what I like to do. I'm stubborn. I like to push it and I just didn't push it hard enough."

Winslow was followed across the finish line by sophomore Linden Hall (4:16.42) in ninth place; just one spot off the podium in her NCAA Championship finals debut.

"When it was this windy and you're in a field this good and you're going to try and run with that much courage, you better have a perfect day," FSU women's distance coach Karen Harvey said. "She didn't have a perfect day. At the same time she's an All-American and she went for it."

Harvey went on to praise Winslow for the body of her work over a four-year career that now includes seven All-American honors between cross country and track.

Amanda Winslow has been incredible for our program," Harvey said. "I'm really going to miss her. She leads in the classroom, she leads with character and leads on the track."

"One year ago when I was here and found myself in the lead, I couldn't believe it was happening," said Winslow, who was seventh last season. "This year I went into the race thinking it's OK if it happens. Even though the outcome was pretty much the same thing - I got caught in the end - I feel like I've still gained so much experience and had so many accomplishments I'm so proud of."

Winslow never let on that she was less than full speed entering the finals, despite a tender hamstring and a stomach the laid up her much of Friday at the team hotel.

"I'm thankful I made it here; made it to the finals," Winslow said. "A week ago I was thinking my season might be over. I'm really blessed to finish on a somewhat high note. You can't be upset at being an All-American."

The men's 4x100 relay team also claimed All-American honors Saturday, but it wasn't the finish they had hoped for. Leadoff man Alonzo Russell and Dentarius Locke executed a perfect exchange and the `Noles were sailing along in first. The flawless baton exchange from Locke to Brits heightened expectations, before the sophomore from South Africa grabbed his hamstring after three strides with the stick.

"We had the lead, had a good handoff and we might have won that relay if not for a hamstring that let go," Braman said. "That was one of those bad luck things. We competed our butts off."

They day did not get off to a promising start as freshman Morne Moolman failed to reach the finals in the javelin, placing seventh in the first flight with a top throw of 69.48 meters (227-11). Likewise, junior Chelsea Whalen did not advance from the first flight of the shot put, managing only a top mark of 16.32 meters (53-6.50) which was also seventh.

Moolman and Whalen finished 11th and 13th, respectively, while making their NCAA Championship debuts in their Saturday events. As underclassmen, they will have an opportunity to build on the experience after setting school records this season.

Of the nine Florida State men who competed at the four-day meet, six will return in 2014, including Locke, Harris, Russell, Brits, Zak Seddon and Moolman, four of whom leave Hayward Field with All-American honors.

On the women's side, six of seven NCAA Championship qualifiers will return. Winslow leaves a significant void as a graduating senior, but Quigley - a rising junior - will be the Seminoles top returning NCAA finisher for a second consecutive year.

"The things that didn't go well today, some of them were marginal," Braman said. "Chelsea threw well and didn't quite make it in. Morne threw pretty well and was 11th...I feel good about the future. We had a real gut-check point about the middle of April, the week before the conference meet. We could have gone two ways. We nearly pulled a [ACC Championship] double. The message right away was, "These are good people. We're still in it."

Sprinters Sizzle From Start.

Locke, Harris advance to semifinal round at USA Track Championships.

June 20, 2013

DES MOINES, IA - As first steps go, Florida State sprinters Dentarius Locke and James Harris are heading in the right direction. On the opening day of the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Locke and Harris more than held their own against star-studded fields, advancing to Friday's semifinals in the 100 and 400, respectively.

Locke, the NCAA Championship runner-up in the 100 two weeks ago, further validated his breakthrough junior season by posting the fastest time from the four qualifying heats. With a big late-race push, Locke clipped former Florida star Jeff Demps at the line to win into a headwind at 10.19 in the fastest heat of the day at Drake Stadium.

To provide some perspective, Locke was faster than former Olympic medalists Tyson Gary (10.28), former Seminole Walter Dix (10.30), Michael Rodgers (10.35) and Justin Gatlin (10.37), all of whom advanced to the semifinals.

"He executed the race, he didn't just run it," FSU associate head coach Ken Hardnen said of Locke's performance. "He was a little star-struck to begin with. He said, `I don't know whether to ask for autographs or what.'

"Not that he knows he belongs, we can go to work tomorrow."

Locke's next step in pursuit of spot on the USA team at the World Championships in August will come in Friday's semifinal round, which will be followed by the finals in the evening.

Harris also earned an automatic qualifying spot into the semifinal round of the 400, placing second in heat 3 in a solid 45.63. Harris' time was fifth-fastest overall from the preliminary round and just off the heat-winning mark of 45.55 by Josh Mance. Mance was enrolled at FSU in the spring but ineligible to compete after transferring from USC.

"James slipped coming out of the blocks a little bit, but he ran really well coming home and looked good and strong," said Harnden. "I'm excited on him to just being able to focus on running. I feel like he's got a legitimate shot at least making the relay pool and going to Europe and running with the big boys. The same thing for Locke."

Harris will try and make his way out of Friday evening's semifinal round and snare a place in the eight-man final, which is set for Saturday evening.

While Locke and Harris stole the spotlight, they weren't the only ones with FSU ties competing. Former NCAA champion and 2008 Olympian Rafeeq Curry placed sixth in the triple jump (16.77 meters/55-0.25).

Amanda Winslow, racing in her Florida State uniform for the final time, ran 4:17.70 to place seventh in the first of two 1500-meter heats, but was unable to advance on time. The seven-time Seminole All-American finished 16th overall from a field of 30.

Thursday's nightcap - the men's 10,000-meter final - also marked the last hurrah for another Seminole All-American. Michael Fout was running with world class company well past the midway mark of the race, climbing as high as fifth-place alongside the likes of eventual champion Galen Rupp, Dathan Ritzenheim and Chris Derrick on a hot and steamy night.

That trio separated from Fout and the rest of the pack over the final 2000 meters.

"Mike did a really nice job," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "He just couldn't cover a 64 (second lap). It was really hot; hotter than Tallahassee. In his final time in a FSU singlet, he finished 15th and did us and himself proud."

Fout, who was fourth at the NCAA Championship meet two weeks ago, finished third among Division I collegians in the field in 29:54.25.

Harris, Locke Reach Finals.

Junior sprinters shine at USA's; Whalen takes Canadian silver in shot.

June 21, 2013

DES MOINES, IA - Florida State junior sprinters Dentarius Locke and James Harris added trips to the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships finals to their magical seasons Friday night at Drake University.

On the heels of Thursday's fastest preliminary round time in the 100-meter dash (10.10), Locke advanced from the first heat of the semifinals with a third-place time of 9.97, as he trailed NCAA champion Charles Silmon (9.85) and Rakiem Salaam (9.86) across the finish line. Former Seminole star and 2008 Olympic double-bronze winner Walter Dix pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring issue in the first heat and eased home in eight.

Locke, the lone collegiate athlete in the eight-man final, entered as the No. 7 seed based on semifinal times and managed to improve one spot, posting a 10.05 to finish sixth in a star-studded field. Tyson Gay won in a world-leading 9.75 and was followed by fellow 2012 Olympian Justin Gatlin (9.89).

Harris claimed the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot from the second of two semifinal heats of the 400-meter dash. The ACC champion needed a big push in the homestretch - into a head-wind - to lock down his spot in Saturday's final with a time of 45.47.

"When you think about where these two guys started the year, I'm real happy with where they are," FSU associate head coach Ken Harnden said. "At the end of the day, making the final is what matters and they got it done."

Neither Locke nor Harris executed with the kind of precision Harnden had come to expect from his All-American duo. That wasn't altogether unexpected, considering both made their USA Track & Field Championship sprint debuts at the meet.

By reaching the finals at the USA Championships, Locke and Harris join Maurice Mitchell (2011) and Dix (2005) as the third and fourth Seminole sprinters to advance the finals with eligibility remaining.

Harris will have an opportunity to secure an outright spot on Team USA by placing in the top three in Saturday's final. A top-six finish would also land the Mississippi State transfer a position on the 4x400 relay pool as the team prepares for the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia later this summer.

Harnden said that Locke has already been extended an invitation to join Team USA in Monte Carlo as a member of the 4x100 relay pool.

Otniel Teixeira, who will enroll in the fall at FSU after transferring from USF, advanced to the 1500-meter final at Drake in Junior Championship competition. The former Lake Brantley High School star grabbed the final qualifying spot with a time of 3:56.58.

Elsewhere, FSU junior thrower Chelsea Whalen, competing at the Canadian National Championship meet, placed second in the shot put Friday. Whalen, who will represent Canada at the World University Games in Russia later this summer, will compete in the javelin finals Saturday in Moncton, New Brunswick.

At the Jamaican National Championships in Kingston, former Seminole NCAA champion Ricardo Chambers advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter dash. Chambers ran 46.22 to qualify 16th.

Junior Alonzo Russell secured a spot in the 400-meter finals at the Bahamas Open Nationals Friday with the No. 3 time overall. Russell ran 46.28 in his preliminary heat, trailing 2012 Olympians Chris Brown and Ramon Miller, with his second-fastest time of the season. Trevor Mackey, a member of FSU's 2013 signing class, advanced to the finals of the 100-meter dash as the No. 5 qualifier in 10.39.

Harris fifth in 400 at USA; Whalen grabs second Canadian silver.

June 22, 2013

DES MOINES, IA - Florida State junior James Harris matched his personal-best time in the finals of the 400-meter dash at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday, placing fifth in 45.23.

Harris, who came into the finals as the No. 7 seed, was just .01 seconds out of fourth place at the finish. Josh Mance, who was enrolled at FSU in the spring and trained in Tallahassee, was fourth (45.22).

LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 Olympic champion, won in 44.21 and was followed by Tony McQuay (44.74) and Arman Hall (45.01). Harris will have an opportunity to compete for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, Russia later this summer as the member of the 4x400 relay pool.

His fifth-place finish comes one day after Seminole teammate Dentarius Locke placed sixth in the 100-meter finals to earn a spot on the Team USA 4x100 relay pool at the World Championships.

Three former Seminoles also competed Saturday in the preliminary rounds of the 200-meter dash at Drake University. Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell and Charles Clark all advanced to Sunday's semifinal round.

Byram, a multi-time All-American for the Seminoles who completed his eligibility in 2011, got things going by winning heat 3 in 20.21, which was the fourth-fastest qualifying time in the preliminary rounds. Mitchell and Clark, who combined for three consecutive NCAA 200-meter titles while representing the Seminoles, also moved on.

Clark was the first to grab an automatic spot in the semis, finishing second to 100-meter champion Tyson Gay in the first heat of the preliminary round. Clark checked in with a time of 20.57. Mitchell followed with a runner-up finish to his former collegiate rival Ameer Webb in heat two, posting a time of 20.38.

The top four finishers in Sunday's two semifinal heats, set for 3:05 p.m. (ET). will advance to the finals later in the day.

Also on Saturday, incoming transfer Otniel Teixeira notched a personal-best time of 3:56.55 to place 10th in the finals of the Junior Championships 1500-meter run. Teixeira will enroll at FSU in the fall as a transfer from USF.

In addition to the 200 semifinals, two other Seminoles will compete Sunday as the USA Championships draw to a close. Lacy Harper (Janson), a 2012 Olympian, is vying for her third trip to the IAAF World Outdoor Championships as a member of Team USA.

Harris will also get another crack at earning a medal Sunday in the high jump competition, where he enters as the No. 5 seed.

Whalen claims second Canadian Nationals silver medal.

Florida State junior Chelsea Whalen grabbed her second silver medal in as many days of competition at the Canadian National Championships Saturday, setting a new personal-best in the javelin with a throw of 51.15 meters (167-9). That marked moved Whalen to No. 2 on FSU's all-time list, behind school record holder Kari Keith (53.30m, 1990).

Whalen eclipsed her previous personal-best mark on three of her six throws in the competition at Moncton, New Brunswick, including an opening throw of 50.11 meters. That marked the first time she had eclipsed the 50-meter mark in her career.

The Liverpool, Nova Scotia native now holds the Province record in both the shot put and javelin.

"My main goal going in was to hopefully PR," said Whalen, who was seeded fifth entering the javelin competition. "I had shot put out the way, so my attitude was just do the best you can. ... There was more in there, but it didn't come out there in the end."

Whalen claimed her first silver medal in the shot put on Friday with a mark of 16.20 meters (53-1.75). This marked just her second appearance at Canada's Senior National Championships.

"It definitely is [a highlight] and it's great that it's so close, so my friends and family could come up and watch," said Whalen, whose home is just four hours away from the championship site.

Whalen will represent Canada at the World University Games in Russia next month.

Signee Mackey wins Bahamas 200 title.

Trevorano Mackey, who will enroll at FSU in the fall, will bring a national title to Tallahassee with him after capturing the 200-meter dash gold medal at the Bahamas Open Nationals Saturday. Mackey backed up his No. 1 qualifying time of 20.60 on Friday with a winning time of 20.71.

It was the second medal of the meet for the NJCAA All-American from South Plains (Tex.) Community College. Mackey finished third in the 100 on Friday (10.25).

Junior Alonzo Russell will compete in the 400-meter dash finals Sunday at the Bahamas Open Nationals after qualifying with the third-fastest time.

FSU freshman and school record-holder Kellion Knibb placed fourth in the discus at the Jamaican National Championships on Saturday in Kingston.

Former Seminole star Kimberly Williams will compete in the triple jump in Kingston on Sunday, while FSU signee Chad DaCosta will compete in the shot put.
